Remarks by the President Honoring the 2013 NCAA Champion UConn Huskies

By The White House

East Room

2:25 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Everybody have a seat. Everybody have a seat. Welcome to the White House, everybody. Congratulations to the NCAA Champion UConn Huskies. (Applause.) Congratulations to Coach Auriemma on your record-tying eighth national championship. (Applause.) I see this guy too much. (Laughter.) Keep in mind, a lot of Presidents don’t even get eight years in the White House. (Laughter.) He’s spent more time than some Presidents in the White House. (Laughter.) And he’s not term-limited, so he can just keep on going.

We’ve got UConn President, Susan Herbst is here. (Applause.) Where did she go? There she is up here. I wasn’t sure where she was sitting. We’ve got some outstanding Huskies fans in the house, including several proud members of your congressional delegation. So give them a big round of applause. (Applause.)

Probably the most important person here is not Coach Geno, but Coach Geno’s mom, who is here. So please give her a big round of applause — (applause) — who is so proud. And she’s gorgeous. And that’s where you got a good head of hair. (Laughter.) So I have to say to the Huskies, I’ve missed you guys. It’s been, what, a couple years? Seniors Heather Buck, Caroline Doty made the trip to the White House in 2009. So this is an old hat for them. Kelly Faris joined them in 2010. Back then, they were in the middle of a 90-game winning streak.

I reminded Geno at the time, when I called him, that over the first 23 months I was in office he didn’t lose once. He just pointed out to me that when they won the championship, I went on to win reelection. So he thinks we’ve got a good thing going here. (Laughter.)

Now, most years, I think for most teams, being a champion isn’t about dominating the way that you did back then. It’s about being at your best when the stakes are highest. And that’s what made this team so special.

To get to that national title, they had to go through a team that, let’s face it, had had your number during some previous games: Notre Dame. Heading into this season’s tournament you had played them three times, you had lost three — that heartbreaker in the Big East finals.

After that game, some teams might have lowered their sights. But rather than get discouraged, Geno gathered you together in the locker room, I understand, and said, “I’m going to show you how to win a championship.” And as Kelly pointed out, Geno is pretty good at his job. He knows how to win championships.

So it looked tough at the time, but these folks didn’t stop believing in themselves. I have to confess that …read more

A “Fairy” Is A Mythical Creature, “Gay” Means Happy, And A “Fag” Is A Cigarette

By Fred Weinberg

Sigh.

Once a sportswriter, always a sportswriter, I guess.

I just saw that Rutgers University fired its head basketball coach after three seasons, ostensibly because of some practice videos, aired on ESPN, that showed him pushing some of his players and calling them homosexuals. Perhaps in stronger language than that. (There were subtitles.)

Now, far be it for me to condone a basketball coach cussing out players in a practice at a Big East school, where just about every player is selected for his ability to maybe play in the NBA. But if every coach in major college sports were selected on his skills as a diplomat, the final four would be very dull indeed.  Ask one Robert Knight.

A more telling reason for Mike Rice’s firing may well be his last three years’ record of 44-51.

Some years ago, Oral Roberts University had just come to national basketball prominence.  It was 1973, and two guys who have provided me over the years with endless hours of both friendship and entertainment could not have been happier.  Both Oral Roberts and former head coach Ken Trickey are no longer with us; but back then, President Roberts told Trick publicly how much he loved him.

Trick answered with a question:

Would you still love me if I was eight and 20?

“We’d love you,” said the man the University is named for.  “But we’d miss you.”

In the case of Rutgers, they don’t even have to love Rice. Insult the gay community, and you’re fired.  Even if the real reason is probably 44-51.

Explain that to me.  I hate to go all Bill O’Reilly on us, but we can have the Federal Government use our money to pay for putting a crucifix in urine and call it art.  The ACLU can file and win endless lawsuits telling Christians they can’t post a cross on public land. But let a basketball coach call someone a fairy, and even Chris Christie gets into the act as the Governor of New Jersey.  Who knew fatso was so sensitive.

I’ll bet that if Coach Rice called a player a “bible thumper” or a “mackerel snapper,” nobody would have said a word.

Let me be clear here.  I’m all for civility in basketball coaches.  But no basketball player was hurt in the making of those videos.  They were all there voluntarily, and they all stayed there.  You know, getting a quality college education while auditioning for the NBA. That’s why they are called student-athletes.

I’d be willing to give pretty good odds that if Rice were 85-10 over the last three years, he’d still be there, too.  If they had even played their way into an invitation to the big dance this year, he’d still be head coach.

There are two things at work here.

First is institutional hypocrisy at Rutgers. And second is the willingness of people who should know better to cower in the face of political correctness.

When I was growing up,

Louisville, Michigan To Face Off For National Title: 2013 NCAA Tournament Final Matchup Set

By The Huffington Post News Editors

ATLANTA (AP) — Start studying, Louisville.

Michigan spoiled what would have been one heck of a going-away party for the Big East on Saturday night, beating Syracuse 61-56 to earn a spot in Monday night’s championship game against top-seeded Louisville. Now the Cardinals have less than 48 hours to get ready for a team they haven’t played since 1978.

“We don’t have to prepare too much if we play Syracuse,” Pitino, trying to become the first coach to win national titles at two different schools, said after Louisville rallied for a 72-68 victory over ninth-seeded Wichita State. “We’ve got a lot of preparation if we play Michigan.”

Syracuse Final Four Berth Secured With 55-39 Win Over Marquette In Elite Eight (PHOTOS)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

WASHINGTON (AP) — Using its trapping, shot-challenging 2-3 zone defense to perfect effect, No. 4-seeded Syracuse shut down No. 3 Marquette 55-39 in the East Regional final Saturday, reaching the Final Four for the first time in a decade.

Coach Jim Boeheim and the Orange (30-9) haven’t been to the national semifinals since a freshman named Carmelo Anthony led them to the 2003 championship.

Fittingly, a matchup between schools from the soon-to-break-apart, rough-and-tumble Big East became quite a struggle to score. Syracuse was led by senior forward James Southerland‘s 16 points.

Elite Eight Teams: Louisville, Michigan Among Teams In 2013 NCAA Tournament Regional Finals

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The field of 68 teams in the 2013 NCAA Tournament has been winnowed down to the Elite Eight. Sixty of the best college basketball teams in the nation, including the team that entered the tournament atop the AP poll, have been sent home. The eight teams remaining will play in four regional finals on Saturday and Sunday, with the winners advancing to the Final Four in Atlanta.

With wins on Thursday night, Marquette and Syracuse ensured that at least one Big East team would reach the Georgia Dome. Buzz Williams’ Golden Eagles will attempt to solve the 2-3 zone defense of the Orange in the opening Elite Eight game on Saturday. The conference rivals tip off at 4:30 p.m. EST in Washington, DC in the East Region.

Another Big East team (for now), Louisville, is the only No. 1 seed to reach the regional finals. Rick Pitino’s Cardinals held off the No. 12 Oregon Ducks on Friday night in the Sweet 16. The Cards will face Duke in Indianapolis on Sunday.

NCAA Tournament 2013: From A-10 To The Zags, Everything You Need To Know About The Round Of 64

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Between the First Four and the two first full days of wall-to-wall NCAA Tournament action, 36 games have been played. Thirty-six teams have been sent home. Thirty-two teams have advanced. Although no game has been won on a buzzer beater (although Vander Blue came closest), several were won by teams that no one expected to succeed. From A-Z, here is a rundown of everything you need to know about the madness of March (so far):

Atlantic 10: President Obama believed that the Big Ten was the strongest conference during the year. The selection committee granted the most bids to the Big East. Once the ball was thrown up, however, it was the A-10 that stole the show. Highlighted by No. 13 La Salle‘s upset win over No. 4 Kansas State (coming after a First Four win), the Atlantic 10 has gone 6-0. VCU and Saint Louis dominated. Temple and Butler are moving on. As Mike Lopresti of USA Today Sports calculated, the round of 32 will be 15.6% A-10 teams.

Bracket: Through April 8th, everything will be a bracket. Food is a bracket. Curse words are a bracket. Hate is a bracket. Most importantly, the NCAA Tournament is a bracket. Did you fill yours out? Did you have Harvard and Florida Gulf Coast advancing? Do you need to print a new one after early upsets forced you to shred it. If so, then click here.

Louisville NCAA Tournament Seed: Cardinals Earn Top Overall Spot In March Madness

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The Louisville Cardinals have shown that they are comfortable being front-runners in their season-long quest to go farther than last year’s Final Four appearance.

Now, they enter the NCAA tournament as the overall No 1 seed. A familiar position for this squad, which was ranked No. 2 to start the season and was the preseason favorite to win the Big East.

Last year Louisville got hot during a surprising run in the Big East tournament and continued rolling to the Final Four.
