Don Young Apology: Alaska GOP Congressman Says He ‘Meant No Disrespect’ With ‘Wetbacks’ Slur

By The Huffington Post News Editors

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alaskan Rep. Don Young, one of the most senior Republicans in the House, has apologized for using the racial slur “wetbacks” in referring to Hispanic migrant workers.

Young, now in his 21st term in the House, said in an interview with Alaska’s KRBD radio that when he was young, his father “used 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes” on their California farm.

Don Young Uses ‘Wetbacks’ To Describe Latinos (AUDIO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) turned heads on Thursday, using a racial slur to describe Latinos.

Addressing the United States‘ jobs situation in a radio interview with KRBD-FM, Young admitted that technology has impacted the market. In the process, he chose the term “wetbacks” to describe the workers his father employed.

“My father had a ranch; we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes,” Young said. “It takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It’s all done by machine.”

Lifestyles of the Young and Wealthy

By Andrew Marder, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

When I was 17 years old, I had a government class where we occasionally had to summarize news events. I think I got a B in the class, which I thought wasn’t too shabby. Little did I know that if I had simply done the same thing in digital form, I could have sold the idea to Yahoo! for $30 million. That’s what Summly founder and developer Nick D’Aloisio did earlier this week, and as soon as he’s done with school, he’s going to be working for Yahoo!.

The acquisition was huge for D’Aloisio, and it drove home Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer’s focus on partnering for mobile devices. Mayer has said, “Given that we do not have mobile hardware, a mobile OS, a browser, or a social network, how are we going to compete? I think that the big piece here is that it really allows us to partner.” Summly is a step in that direction, as the product is focused on making news easier to consume on mobile devices. Well done, Nick.

D’Aloisio isn’t the first kid to make it big online. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the face of youthful success, addressing investors while wearing his hoodie, and smiling like a kid on picture day in every company photo. In addition to being worth as much as a small nation, Zuckerberg, Mayer, and other CEOs have made a hobby of turning smart kids into rich, smart kids. Here are some other youthful millionaires, and the companies that they’ve helped.

The Instagram man
Last year, Facebook bought Instagram for a cool $1 billion. That set CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom up pretty well. Systrom spent time at Google and the company that would become Twitter before forming Instagram. His payout last year was reported to be close to $400 million. But so far, the value that Facebook has achieve from the purchase is cloudy, at best.

Last month, Facebook’s CFO David Ebersman said, “One of the services that is, I think, a quite formidable competitor is Instagram.” That’s an odd role for a product to play, and it’s unclear on how that competition is going to drive more income for Facebook. While investors may have to wait for a while to see the final answer, Systrom has already reaped the benefits of the acquisition.

Selling the ability to sell
Nat Turner was just two years out of college when Google purchased his Invite Media online purchase platform for $70 million in 2010. The company focused on selling advertising through third-party ad exchanges. Google has upgraded the software since purchasing it, and recently started moving customers away from the Invite Media branding and over to the new brand — DoubleClick by Google.

Apparently, Turner was happy to sell the company and move on. He’s now working on his next big thing, Flatiron Health. The new company is an oncology focused data tool, which is supposed to help cancer care providers …read more

Miss. sheriff: 3 found dead, each shot once

Authorities say the teenage girl and two adults found dead at a house in north Mississippi on Tuesday had each been shot once in the head.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson says 55-year-old Wiley Young, 46-year-old Danica McCord and 13-year-old Destiny McCord appear to have died from the gunshot wounds, but autopsies are pending.

Johnson stopped short of saying that one of the three killed the other two and then committed suicide. However, he says authorities don’t think “there is someone on the loose that is causing harm to people.”

The sheriff said a .45 caliber pistol was found at the scene.

Johnson says Young and Danica McCord were dating and possibly engaged. Destiny was her daughter.

Authorities say the bodies were discovered by Young‘s son.

Young women do not want to run for office

Despite some very high-profile female candidates and elected officials, and what looks like a changing landscape of U.S. politics, a new study conducted by American University professor and director of its Women and Politics Institute Jennifer L. Lawless and Richard L. Fox (Loyola Marymount University) reveals that young women are less likely than young men ever to have considered running for office, to express interest in a candidacy at some point in the future, or to consider elective office a desirable profession. …read more

HyperSolar to Build Renewable Hydrogen Generator for Commercial Use

HyperSolar to Build Renewable Hydrogen Generator for Commercial Use

The company’s commercial scale renewable hydrogen generator is expected to cost substantially less than other renewable hydrogen systems that rely on expensive, energy intensive electrolyzers

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– HyperSolar, Inc. (OTC:HYSR), the developer of a breakthrough technology to produce renewable hydrogen using sunlight and any source of water, today announced its plan to build renewable hydrogen generators for commercial use. Named the H2Generator, the company’s first commercial product is expected to sell at a substantially lower price than other renewable hydrogen systems that rely on expensive and energy intensive electrolyzers to split water.

“We believe that we can offer a cost competitive renewable hydrogen alternative for those who need power 24/7,” said Tim Young, CEO of HyperSolar. “We believe that our intensive R&D efforts will finally pay off in the form of a go to market commercial product. One key discovery was an efficient and low cost polymer protective coating that will allow us to protect solar devices against photocorrosion. Using this coating to treat traditional silicon solar cells, we are able to eliminate the expensive electrolyzer by integrating the electrolysis function directly into a solar cell immersed in water.

“We have given our tech team the green light to complete the product design required to build the first demonstration system,” Young continued. “With a demonstration system in hand, we can then move to the manufacturing phase of the business.”

The HyperSolar H2Generator will be designed to be a linearly scalable and self-contained renewable hydrogen production system. As a result, it is intended to be installed almost anywhere to produce hydrogen fuel for local use. This distributed model of hydrogen production will address one of the greatest challenges of using clean hydrogen fuel on a large scale – the need to transport hydrogen in large quantities.

Each stage of the HyperSolar H2Generator can be scaled independently according to the hydrogen demands and length of storage required for a specific application. A small scale system can be used to produce continuous renewable electricity for a small house, or a large scale system can be used to produce hydrogen to power a community.

Rig worker: Training saved lives after BP blowout

A Transocean employee who served as chief mate on the Deepwater Horizon testified Monday that he believes the rig crew’s emergency training saved lives following the 2010 explosion that killed 11 workers and triggered the nation’s worst offshore oil spill.

David Young, who was second-in-command to the rig’s captain, said he believes 115 workers managed to escape the burning rig that BP had leased from Transocean because they followed their training.

“What would you say the top priority of the Deepwater Horizon crew was?” Transocean attorney Luis Li asked at the start of the fifth week of a federal trial over the disaster.

“For everybody to be able to go home safely back to their families,” said Young, a witness called by his employer, a Swiss-based drilling company.

Young, now the captain on a different Transocean-owned rig in the Gulf, said he believes the rig’s crew had an excellent safety culture.

But plaintiffs’ attorneys have accused BP and its contractors of sacrificing safety and cutting corners in a rush to complete a project that was behind schedule and millions of dollars over budget at the time of the April 20, 2010, blowout. Marine safety expert Geoff Webster, a witness for the plaintiffs, testified earlier this month that he believes Transocean failed to properly maintain the Deepwater Horizon or adequately train its crew members.

Young defended the Deepwater Horizon‘s maintenance record before the explosion.

“Did anyone at BP tell you the rig was unsafe?” Li asked.

“No,” Young said.

Young described a harrowing scene as workers scrambled to help injured colleagues get to life rafts and abandon the burning rig. He recalled seeing the lifeless body of crane operator Dale Burkeen on the deck.

“The fire was over our head where we were. There was debris flying around,” he said.

Unable to move Burkeen, Young ran over to get help from another worker, Mike Mayfield. Young said Mayfield restrained him from trying to run back through the flames to reach Burkeen, one of the 11 workers who died.

President Obama Designates Five New National Monuments

By The White House

National Monuments Will Generate Tourism and Economic Benefits for Local Economies, Honor African-American History, Mark Delaware’s first National Park Site

WASHINGTON, DC – President Obama today signed proclamations establishing five new national monuments, using his authority under the Antiquities Act, which celebrate our nation’s rich history and natural heritage. The monuments, located in Delaware, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio and Washington, help tell the story of significant people and extraordinary events in American history, as well as protect unique natural resources for the benefit of all Americans. The designations were made with bi-partisan support from congressional, state and local officials, local businesses and other stakeholders and are expected to promote economic growth in the local communities through tourism and outdoor recreation.

“These sites honor the pioneering heroes, spectacular landscapes and rich history that have shaped our extraordinary country,” said President Obama. “By designating these national monuments today, we will ensure they will continue to inspire and be enjoyed by generations of Americans to come.”

“From the treasured landscapes of northern New Mexico and Washington, to the historic sites in Delaware, to the sites that show our nation’s path from Civil War to civil rights, these monuments help tell the rich and complex story of our nation’s history and natural beauty,” Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said. “There’s no doubt that these monuments will serve as economic engines for the local communities through tourism and outdoor recreation – supporting economic growth and creating jobs.”

According to the National Parks and Conservation Association study in 2006 each federal dollar invested in national parks generates at least four dollars of economic value to the public. National parks are responsible for $13.3 billion dollars of local, private-sector economic activity nationwide, supporting 267,000 private-sector jobs. Outdoor recreation alone generates $646 billion in consumer spending and 6.1 million direct jobs in the United States each year, according to the Outdoor Industry Association.

The monuments are:

Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument in Ohio. The monument will preserve the home of Col. Charles Young (1864–1922), a distinguished officer in the United States Army who was the third African American to graduate from West Point and the first to achieve the rank of Colonel. Young also served as one of the early Army superintendents of Sequoia and General Grant National Parks, before the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916. The national headquarters of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, of which Col. Young was a member, made the property available for acquisition by the federal government for the purpose of establishing the national monument commemorating Young’s life and accomplishments. The monument, located in Wilberforce, Ohio, will be managed by the Department of the Interior’s National Park Service.

After 70 years, sword given to soldier during WWII goes to Hungarian Embassy

By hnn

…On Friday, Young and several of his relatives gathered at David and Patricia Young’s residence, set to fulfill Guiffre’s request by giving the sword to Hungarian officials in a ceremony at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington. An event after the ceremony honored the 165th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight in 1848-49.

Andras Szorenyi, political and public affairs officer with the Embassy of Hungary, said in an email the saber is a ceremonial sword that dates back to the 19th century, and is therefore an important part of Hungarian history.

“The experts need to do further research to link it to a specific event or period of time but we appreciate the symbolic value of receiving it from Mr. Young,” Szorenyi wrote. “It is a good example of the excellent people-to-people relations between our countries. … We will do our best to find the most fitting venue for the sword to be displayed and contribute to telling Hungarian history.”…

Lily Tomlin: ‘Girls’ Is ‘Too Sexually Focused,’ Needs ‘More Range’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Lily Tomlin doesn’t have a “profound judgement” about “Girls,” but she does have an issue with how sexual the Lena Dunham series is.

“I think it’s too sexually focused. I think it should have a little more range,” Tomlin told Vanity Fair. “But the sexuality is what is going to bring the big audience, and a lot of young girls, I suppose, puzzling over what to do and what not to do or how to do it. Life is very different from the time when I was 20 and the time Lena is …”

Tomlin, who calls herself a feminist, said one of the fallouts of feminism is girls have become more accessible. “Maybe not wisely accessible. A lot of young girls — they’re expected to give blow jobs now. Young, young girls, as far as I can perceive. Maybe 12 or 13 years old. I mean, that’s a rite of passage, I suppose,” Tomlin said. “As a feminist, I don’t want those girls to be used. Maybe they love giving blow jobs, I don’t know. Maybe they do? But I don’t think you really love giving boys in general blow jobs without any feeling to someone you’re not close to. I don’t try to speak for people that young. I’m not that young anymore. But my own sense of self — I wouldn’t give myself away that easily.”
