Restorer John Willhoit's Porsche 911 gets the Petrolicious video treatment - screencap

Filed under:

You’ll often hear Porsche 911 owners say the same thing about how they ended up buying one: They could never forget the feeling they experienced during their first ride. Top-flight Porsche restorer John Willhoit will comment on how the rear-engine layout gives the 911 its unique handling and plenty of room in the interior, but he’ll also tell you that, after his first ride in one, he was hooked.

Willhoit’s 1971 Pastel Blue 911T wasn’t his first Porsche; it was a one-owner basketcase parked outside his sister’s neighbor’s garage when he found it 20 years ago. Rain water had been draining onto and into it for years, so it was clear to him when he saw it in person that it would be a labor of love to bring it back to life. Of all the things we would expect in a restoration done to this level, it would be a paint job, but, amazingly, the paint is original! Everything else, however, isn’t.

Scroll below to watch this new video from Petrolicious, where you’ll find out what Willhoit did to restore his personal 911 hotrod and stuff 300 horsepower into it. Just don’t think he’ll do the same for your Porsche – unless you don’t mind waiting a year to get your car into his shop and have a cool $300,000 to spend on the restoration. Enjoy!

Official: Porsche celebrates 50 years of 911 with some excellent pics

The Porsche 911 is one of the most iconic sports cars of all time, and to celebrate the car’s first 50 years, Porsche has released a stunning set of photos showing how far the 911 has come from the original back in 1963 to its current 991 generation. Unlike the recent 60-year photo spread that Chevrolet put together for the Corvette, though, Porsche’s gallery only shows the original 911 and the current car.

Each time the 911 is redesigned, the car’s front fenders, roofline and the shape of the side windows are key focal points. Even some of the interior cues have remained the same over the years, including the positioning of the ignition key on the left of the steering column and the five-gauge instrument cluster layout.

Scroll down for Porsche’s press release breaking down the seven generations of the 911, and be sure to check out our gallery with plenty of high-res pics for you to download as a desktop wallpaper. In fact, we’re providing these at 1920-pixels-wide instead of our usual 1280 wide. Enjoy!

Fire Emblem Awakening: Recruiting Roy

Last Thursday another new piece of Fire Emblem Awakening DLC was released (check out my full review of Awakening to find out why you should care). Called Champions of Yore 2, this new pack allows players to recruit Roy, yet another legendary hero from FE‘s illustrious past. Gamers outside Japan probably best know Roy as one of the playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee, so this is a great opportunity for those who aren’t into importing Japanese titles to see the teen in his natural state – on a grid-based field of battle!

Take a look at the new DLC below, then check it out for yourself by visitng Outrealm Gate (this opens up after you’ve reached Chapter 5). Enjoy!

Early Design Sketches for Zelda: The Wind Waker

Japan often gets cool things that never make it overseas – and the Zelda Box is one of them. The Japan-only collector’s set for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker came with the game, a promo book, a soundtrack, Link and Moblin figures and more. Enviable swag aside, one of the coolest things about this set was the plethora of Wind Waker art buried in the pages of the included guidebook. Nintendo would have it so that those outside Japan never get to see these historic sketches. It seems apparent the company would rather let you go cold and hungry in the Wind Waker concept art department, all lost and lonely.

Thank goodness for the Internet, amirite?

By way of some epic fan translations and scans, care of GlitterBerri and posted on History of Hyrule (not to be confused with Hyrule Historia), we can all now enjoy this rare insight into the making of the game. Here’s a selection of what’s been posted. Enjoy!
