Israel meets ambassadors over EU settlements ban

Israel met the ambassadors of Britain and France, and Germany’s deputy envoy over plans by the EU to ban its 28 members from having any dealings with Jewish settlements, an official said on Friday.

The Jewish state warned the envoys of a serious crisis between it and the European Union over the move, the high-ranking foreign ministry official told AFP.

“The British and French ambassadors and German number two were invited yesterday to the ministry… for discussions on the EU guidelines,” he said.

“We asked the ambassadors to tell their capitals that no Israeli government would accept these conditions, and they could provoke a serious crisis with Israel,” he warned.

The guidelines, published in the EU’s Official Journal Friday morning, forbid EU member states from funding or dealing with entities in territories occupied by the Jewish state in 1967.

Germany and France confirmed the Thursday meetings but the British embassy did not immediately comment.

Christophe Bigot, France’s ambassador in Tel Aviv, said the Israeli foreign ministry’s director, Rafi Barak, had called the meetings.

“The Israelis informed us of their concerns” over the EU plan, he said. “I reminded them that the new guidelines were a continuation of European policy on settlements.”

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton also said in a Friday statement that the guidelines simply “reiterates the long-held position that bilateral agreements with Israel do not cover the territory that came under Israel’s administration in June 1967.”

The preamble to the guidelines says that “the EU does not recognise Israel’s sovereignty over… the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including east Jerusalem… and does not consider them to be part of Israel’s territory, irrespective of their legal status under domestic law”.

The guidelines apply to “grants, prizes and financial instruments,” it adds.

“Only Israeli entities having their place of establishment within Israel’s pre-1967 borders will be considered eligible as final recipients” of this kind of funding.

Of particular concern to officials was a scientific cooperation deal with the EU, “Horizon 2020”, which would generate investments worth hundreds of millions of euros (dollars) in Israeli technology companies, Haaretz newspaper quoted a foreign ministry official as saying.

More than 80 percent of Israelis are opposed to the new EU guidelines, according to a survey published Friday by pro-government newspaper Israel Hayom.

Settlement building in the territories occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War is considered illegal under international law.

Hagel: US committed to Israel's military edge

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is assuring Israel that the Obama administration is committed to preserving and improving the Jewish state’s military edge in the Middle East.

Hagel made the pledge at a news conference Monday at Israel‘s ministry of defense in Tel Aviv.

Hagel says the U.S. will permit Israel to buy various new weapons, including U.S. missiles and advanced radars for its strike aircraft.

Hagel also reiterates that the United States will leave it to Israel to decide whether and when it needs to attack Iran to stop it from building a nuclear bomb.

Hagel: Israel, US see 'exactly same' Iran threat

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is using his first visit to Israel as Pentagon chief to underscore his view that Israel must decide for itself whether and when to use military force against Iran.

Hagel arrived in Tel Aviv on Sunday. It is the first stop on a five-country Mideast tour.

Hagel told reporters on his flight from Washington that Israel has every right to defend itself, and that Israel and the U.S. share the objective of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

He also acknowledged some differences of view with the Israelis on the question of when and if Iran will decide to go ahead with building a bomb.

Leading Israeli architect Ram Karmi dies

Ram Karmi, a leading Israeli architect whose work is both celebrated and controversial, has died. He was 82.

Karmi won the Israel Prize, the country’s highest honor, in 2002 for his architecture.

Together with sister Ada Karmi-Melamed, he designed Israel’s Supreme Court and with a New York firm, he co-designed the newest terminal at the Ben Gurion International Airport.

Both buildings were lauded but Karmi’s other designs provoked criticism, including his Tel Aviv central bus station, a concrete labyrinth of staircases and escalators.

Karmi dismissed the criticism in a 2010 TV interview, saying: “I know what I did was something big. And I don’t care what people say.”

Karmi, who died Thursday, is survived by his wife and six children. The funeral is due on Friday near Tel Aviv.

Noble Begins Taking Care of Israel's Energy Needs

By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Oil and gas driller Noble Energy says its Tamar natural gas field off the coast of Israel is finally pumping gas, producing about 300 million cubic feet a day. Noble says its gross resource estimate of Tamar is now 10 trillion cubic feet, up from its previous estimate of 9 tcf.

In a way, the news has to make you feel sorry for Zion Oil & Gas, a small, ne’er-do-well exploration company seeking oil and gas in Israel based on interpretations found in the Bible. It holds three onshore licenses that have the clock running down on them — the first one is set to expire next week, though it can be renewed through October 2014 — and thus far its searches have come up empty.

Yet when you think about it, there should be oil there. It’s been found on all sides of Israel. Total  found oil north of the Sinai Peninsula in the 1980s, but the wells subsequently went dry; Isramco  found oil off the coast of Tel Aviv, but never enough to make it profitable; and Noble found a large gas deposit in the Tamar field of the Levant basin. Several Israeli companies have also found oil and gas, but Zion keeps striking out.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the Levant basin is huge, with an estimated 1.7 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 122 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas. It’s not going to put Israel on par with Saudi Arabia, but it will be enough to provide a lot of the country’s energy needs and even turn Israel into an energy exporter. It’s expect to provide anywhere from 50% to 80% of the country’s natural gas needs for the next decade.

Source: U.S. Geological Survey.

Noble has a 36% working interest in Tamar, with Isramco owning almost 29% and Delek, Avner Oil, and Dor Gas owning the rest. Noble expects to deliver up to 1 billion cubic feet of gas per day by the third quarter. Analysts look for it to add around $1 to its share price, which actually caused one firm to raise its target price from $147 to $148 per share.

Last month, Noble said the larger Leviathan field is estimated to hold 18 trillion cubic feet of gas. Together they could supply Israel‘s gas needs for 20 years. At less than 14 times earnings estimates, investors might want to take a second look at Noble Energy, even if it’s sitting just under its 52-week high.

There are many different ways to play the energy sector, and The Motley Fool’s analysts have uncovered an under-the-radar company that’s dominating its industry. This company is a leading provider of equipment and components used in drilling and production operations and is poised to profit in a big way from it. Stone Age Phallus Figurine Unearthed In Israeli Ruins

By The Huffington Post News Editors

israel excavation

Some remarkable traces of Stone Age life were unearthed recently in northern Israel, including a pit of burned bean seeds and a carving of a penis that’s more than 6,000 years old, the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) reported.

Archaeologists are excavating at Ahihud Junction ahead of the construction of a new Israeli railroad line to the city of Karmiel. They found evidence of ancient settlements from two eras: the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period and the Early Chalcolithic period (seventh millennium B.C. to fifth millennium B.C.).

“For the first time in the country, entire buildings and extensive habitation levels were exposed from these early periods, in which the rich material culture of the local residents was discovered,” IAA excavation directors, Yitzhak Paz and Ya’akov Vardi, said in a statement this month.

“We found a large number of flint and obsidian arrowheads, polished miniature stone axes, blades and other flint and stone tools,” the archaeologists added. “The large amount of tools made of obsidian, a material that is not indigenous to Israel, is indicative of the trade relations that already existed with Turkey, Georgia and other regions during this period.”

This image shows the excavation site at Ahihud Junction.

The team said they also found thousands of charred broad bean seeds inside of a pit —  providing an early example of legume cultivation in the Middle East — and the remains of early Chalcolithic rectangular buildings, replete with pottery, as well as flint and stone tools. Other artifacts were slightly more enigmatic, such as the phallic figurine and a palette bearing a schematic etching of female genitals. The IAA called these objects “cultic sexual symbols” that might have represented the fertility of the earth. [Religious Worship: The 10 Craziest Cults]

Israel‘s rich ancient history means that artifacts are often uncovered when the ground is broken for construction projects. Animal and human figurines, some more than 9,000 years old, have been found at Tel Motza, an archaeological site being excavated ahead of the expansion of Highway 1, the main road connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

And the phallus is not the first such find from the ancient world. A Stone Age carving that scientists said looked like an “ancient dildo” was unearthed in Sweden a few years ago. However, that item may have had a more innocent purpose as a flint-carving tool, researchers speculated.

Ben Zygier, ‘Mossad Spy’, Spilled Secrets To Hezbollah, Report Says

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A man identified by media as an Australian-Israeli Mossad agent and found hanged in a Tel Aviv jail had passed secrets to Hezbollah before his death, an influential German magazine reported Sunday.

News weekly Der Spiegel said Ben Zygier, a man known as “Prisoner X” who died in 2010 in an allegedly suicide-proof cell, had handed tips to the Lebanese militant group that led to the arrest of at least two people spying for Israel.

After conducting its own “internal investigations”, the report found that Zygier had started working for Mossad in 2003, investigating European companies doing business with Iran and Syria.

It said Zygier — who was raised in Melbourne but moved to Israel about a decade before his death — was ordered back to Israel in 2007 because his bosses were unhappy with his work.

In 2008 he took a leave of absence, Spiegel said, and returned to Melbourne to finish his studies after trying to recruit new agents for Israel in a bid to restore his standing with his bosses.

In the process he came in contact with Hezbollah supporters, Spiegel said, and while trying to convince them to work for Mossad, disastrously spilled highly sensitive information.

This included the names of Lebanese nationals Ziad al-Homsi and Mustafa Ali Awadeh, who were arrested in May 2009 on charges of spying for Israel and later sentenced to several years of hard labour.

The report said Israeli security authorities had told Zygier after his arrest that they wanted to make an example of him and demanded a prison sentence of at least 10 years.

Zygier was found dead in his cell in December 2010 at the age of 34.

For Israeli Gays, It’s Not About The Ring

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A refugee lawyer, a transgender specialist, and six other people sit in a circle in an empty classroom on the second floor of Tel Aviv’s Gay Center. They are here for the inauguration of Israel’s first-ever LGBT legal clinic. The evening’s keynote speaker is Frederick Hertz, an American legal expert who specializes in gay marriage. He describes a recent case he handled, in which a gay couple, one of them transgender, got married in Las Vegas as a man and a woman. Then they moved to California and wanted their respective healthcare benefits. “So the question,” Hertz says, “was how to register that same-sex couple when they had been married as an opposite-sex couple.”

The crowd stares blankly, some playing with their telephones. One attendee, wearing skinny jeans and Converse sneakers, breaks the collective yawn by quoting a New Yorker cartoon, republished in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, to convey how Israelis feel about the American debate over gay marriage: “Gays and lesbians getting married — haven’t they suffered enough?”
