Ben Zygier, ‘Mossad Spy’, Spilled Secrets To Hezbollah, Report Says

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A man identified by media as an Australian-Israeli Mossad agent and found hanged in a Tel Aviv jail had passed secrets to Hezbollah before his death, an influential German magazine reported Sunday.

News weekly Der Spiegel said Ben Zygier, a man known as “Prisoner X” who died in 2010 in an allegedly suicide-proof cell, had handed tips to the Lebanese militant group that led to the arrest of at least two people spying for Israel.

After conducting its own “internal investigations”, the report found that Zygier had started working for Mossad in 2003, investigating European companies doing business with Iran and Syria.

It said Zygier — who was raised in Melbourne but moved to Israel about a decade before his death — was ordered back to Israel in 2007 because his bosses were unhappy with his work.

In 2008 he took a leave of absence, Spiegel said, and returned to Melbourne to finish his studies after trying to recruit new agents for Israel in a bid to restore his standing with his bosses.

In the process he came in contact with Hezbollah supporters, Spiegel said, and while trying to convince them to work for Mossad, disastrously spilled highly sensitive information.

This included the names of Lebanese nationals Ziad al-Homsi and Mustafa Ali Awadeh, who were arrested in May 2009 on charges of spying for Israel and later sentenced to several years of hard labour.

The report said Israeli security authorities had told Zygier after his arrest that they wanted to make an example of him and demanded a prison sentence of at least 10 years.

Zygier was found dead in his cell in December 2010 at the age of 34.

'Prisoner X' worked for Israeli government, Australia foreign minister confirms

Australia‘s foreign minister on Wednesday confirmed for the first time that a dual Australian-Israeli citizen who died in a maximum-security Israeli prison had been working for Israel‘s government, and he raised the possibility of a diplomatic spat if the man’s Australian passport was used for espionage.

Ben Zygier died in an apparent suicide in his prison cell in December 2010, and reports have said he had worked for the Mossad spy agency. Israel‘s government has refused to release details about the case even after a gag order was partially lifted that barred local media from reporting on it at all. Australia‘s government has said only that Zygier, an Australian who immigrated to Israel, had been charged with unspecified security offenses.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr said that Zygier was working for Israel‘s government, though he would not confirm or deny reports he had worked for Mossad. But Carr warned that the case raises serious questions about the use of Australian passports by dual nationals working for foreign governments, saying that if it’s confirmed Israel used Zygier’s passport for intelligence-gathering purposes, Australia would register “the strongest protest.”

“Certainly if Australian passports were misused here, that’s something we are forced to take very seriously,” Carr told reporters. “No country can allow the integrity of its passport system to be compromised. We can’t say whether it happened with Mr. Zygier’s several passports. I hope the inquiry that takes place … in Israel can clarify this position.”

The mysterious case has strained relations between Australia and its close ally Israel, which suppressed all details of Zygier’s imprisonment and death until Australia‘s national broadcaster broke the story last month. The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported that Zygier, who had previously only been known as “Prisoner X,” was a Mossad agent who hanged himself in what was supposed to be a suicide-proof solitary confinement cell.

The issue of misused passports is particularly sensitive for Australia. In 2010, an Australian investigation concluded that Israel had counterfeited four Australian passports used by a suspected hit squad that murdered a Hamas official in Dubai. Australia retaliated by expelling an Israeli diplomat.

Carr said there was no evidence Zygier was involved in the Dubai killing.

Carr ordered a review into how his foreign affairs department handled the case and released a report on Wednesday criticizing a lack of communication between Australian officials. The review also found that Zygier was granted regular access to a lawyer and was visited by family members more than 50 times during his imprisonment.

Carr said Australia has asked Israel to provide it with information on the charges Zygier was facing, but Israel has refused because of a gag order.

Israeli investigation: Prisoner X hung himself

Israel has partially lifted a gag order over the investigation into the death of an Australian-Israeli man in an Israeli prison two years ago. The probe rules that the man known as “Prisoner X” hung himself.

The story has dominated headlines in Israel for the past week. According to Australian media, the man, identified as Ben Zygier, worked for Israel‘s Mossad spy agency and was mysteriously imprisoned by Israel in 2010 for unspecified security offenses.

Israel kept the case under wraps for more than two years, acknowledging it last week only 24 hours after Australian ABC broke the story.

According to the new information released Tuesday, Israel concluded the prisoner killed himself on Dec. 15, 2010, by hanging himself with a bed sheet from the bathroom window in his cell.

Australia asks Israel to explain prison death

Australia has asked Israel to explain the mysterious death of an Australian-Israeli citizen and alleged Israeli spy in an Israeli prison two years ago.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr said on Sunday he had asked Israel to contribute to his department’s investigation into the case of the man who died in an Israeli prison in December 2010.

Carr had initially said last week his department had been unaware that the prisoner — who was known as Ben Zygier, Ben Allen and Ben Alon — had been in custody until his Australian family asked for his body to be repatriated.

But Carr corrected the record and ordered the departmental investigation on Wednesday after discovering that Australian intelligence officers had alerted some department officials to the arrest 10 months before his death.

Lawyer: Australian-Israeli denied allegations

The lawyer of an Australian-Israeli citizen who died in prison after an apparent career in Israel‘s spy agency says he met with his client the day before he committed suicide and that the man denied the allegations against him.

Avigdor Feldman told Israeli Channel 2 on Thursday that his client, Ben Zygier, was “rational” and that the two discussed legal options, including a plea bargain.

Feldman says Zygier denied the “serious crimes” he was suspected of.

The comments came a day after Israel acknowledged for the first time holding the Australia-born Israeli under a false name for security reasons and that he died in prison in 2010.

An ABC Australia report says Zygier was working for Mossad when he was put in a maximum-security prison for an unspecified crime.

Australia to review case of dead Israeli prisoner

Australian legislators demanded answers Wednesday about the suspicious death of an Australian-Israeli man in an Israeli prison and the government ordered a review of the case, while little more information about the death was revealed in Israel.

The review followed an Australian Broadcasting Corp. report on Tuesday that sought to lift the veil of secrecy from a case that Israel has long kept under wraps and revealed that the man, identified as Ben Zygier, was suspected of links to Israel‘s Mossad espionage agency.

Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr said a review would be conducted of his department’s handling of the prisoner, who was found hanged in an Israeli prison cell in 2010. He is named Ben Allen in his Australian passport. He was also known as Ben Alon and was born Ben Zygier, and it is not certain that the passport name is genuine. A spokesman for Carr said the review was not meant “to suggest anything untoward has happened, but given that there’s an interest in the case, let’s have the review.”

Carr also revealed that some Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade officials knew in 2010 that Allen was detained, contradicting an earlier statement that the department only became aware after he died.

Among the lawmakers demanding clarifications was shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop, who told ABC she wanted to know why details about the case were being censored in Israel.

“That’s a matter that I’ll raise directly with the Israeli Embassy to get an understanding of the basis for it,” she said. Israeli media reports said she met the ambassador and explained her concerns.

The leader of the Australian Greens, Christine Milne, said Carr should press Israel about the circumstances of the case.

The affair emerged in June 2010, when the Israeli news site Ynet briefly reported on the existence of a prisoner — identified only as Prisoner X — whose crimes were unknown, but that report was removed from the site shortly after it was posted.

Ynet then reported on Dec. 27, 2010, that a prisoner had committed suicide while in solitary confinement two weeks earlier. That report, which said jailers took him down from his noose and unsuccessfully tried to revive him, was also quickly removed.
