2013 Mazda Mazda3

The 2013 Mazda3 manages to pack more eagerness, and a little sports-car verve, into a practical, affordable compact-sedan or hatchback. And thanks to the SkyActiv powertrains introduced last year, the Mazda3 doesn’t disappoint at the pump, either–with numbers that range up to 40 mpg without a CVT. Both the eco-conscious and driving…

After its launch splash, Windows 8 faces business skepticism

Among the raft of recent and upcoming Microsoft upgrades, Windows 8 towers in importance but its chances for success remain cloudy among enterprise customers.

While Windows 8 is getting automatically pushed onto new PCs and tablets to consumers, its acceptance in the enterprise is expected to be a tougher sell. Most enterprises have either recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 or are in the process of doing so, and thus unlikely to embark again so soon on another OS refresh, according to various surveys.

It was on the strength of its dominant OS position on desktops and laptops that Microsoft built its successful product portfolio for enterprises, including client-side applications like Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint and server-side software like SQL Server, SharePoint and Exchange.

As the company worked furiously throughout most of 2012 to put the finishing touches on Windows 8, the sense of urgency among its executives was evident, given the anemic share of Windows 7 on tablets, devices which have become tremendously popular not only among consumers but also in workplaces. With Windows 8, which sports a radically different interface optimized for touchscreens, CEO Steve Ballmer and his generals expect Microsoft to significantly improve its share of tablet OSes. In the past two years or so, droves of people have brought to work their personal iOS and Android smartphones and tablets and Windows has a minuscule share of those markets. As with Windows 8 in tablets, Microsoft has high hopes for Windows Phone 8 to improve its smartphone OS sales.

2013 Lincoln MKS AWD EcoBoost Review & Test Drive

By Harvey Schwartz

‘READY TO JOIN A SELECT GROUP’

With an all-new sleeker front and rear fascias, a completely new interior, an all- new adaptive suspension system and the latest in luxury, convenience and infotainment features, the new, updated 2013 Lincoln MKS AWD luxury sport sedan is now very close to joining a very selective group of world-class luxury sedans.  I tested the fully-loaded MKS AWD and was very impressed with the updated model that now will be a competent competitor to the M-B S550, BMW 750i, Audi A8, Jaguar XJ, and Lexus LS460 luxury sport sedans.

New Lincoln MKS AWD highlights include Lincoln Drive Control that is an automatic system that delivers an ideal balance of a smooth ride with confident handling as it intuitively responds to your driving commands and the road itself.  Lincoln Drive Control helps make the 2013 model the most refined and engaging MKS ever.  Additionally, the Lincoln Drive Control enables you to purposefully change the on-road personality of the MKS.  Moving the gear selector from Drive to Sport automatically shifts handling performance, ride firmness, throttle response, shift feel, steering response and traction control/electronic stability control parameters.

The 3.5 liter gasoline twin-turbo direct-injected ‘Eco-Boost’ DOHC all-aluminum V6 engine now pumps out a healthy 365 hp at 5,700 rpm, 10 more hp than last year, and an expansive torque curve that plateaus at 350 lb.ft. of torque from 1,500 to 5,250 rpm.  Fuel economy of the Eco-Boost AWD model is 17mpg/city and 25mpg/highway.  It is the most powerful V6 engine in its segment.  It is designed to deliver performance feel that is smooth, effortless and confident.  I felt the power every time I put my foot down on the throttle.

Also new this year is significantly larger brake components that increase braking power and fade resistance while improving pedal feel.  Improved quietness inside is made possible with additional noise barriers and absorbers that are placed in the front wheel wells, around the shock towers, under the hood and in the trunk.  Redesigned exterior rearview mirrors further reduce wind noise.

An expanded SYNC functionality includes standard Operator Assist and local Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities for laptops and tablets.  New collision warning, new Lane Keeping Alert and new Lane Keeping Aid technologies help warn drivers of potentially dangerous situations and can help avoid common accidents.

Exterior styling updates include a new grille, hood, front fenders, HID headlamps, front fascia, 20 in. aluminum wheels, decklid rear fascia, LED taillights and dual exhaust tips.  On the inside newly crafted features include an all-new instrument panel completely cover in leather, chrome and Burl wood and MyLincoln Touch.

A closer look at these new enhancements, styling and technologies is in order.  Throughout 13 decades of the automobile’s development, suspension engineers have worked tirelessly to find an ideal balance between smooth ride and satisfying, confident handling.  Traditionally, smooth-riding cars have not handled well and sharp-handling cars have ridden harshly.  Standard CCD delivers a more confident drive experience that introduces a key new Lincoln DNA-the balance of ride comfort and impressive handling.  Regardless of road conditions, you will enjoy a markedly smoother, more controlled ride because CCD is always tuning and refining the ride quality.  The result of some 4,000 hours of development time, CCD delivers its on-road benefit by significantly extending the chassis’ capabilities compared to a chassis with non-adjustable struts and shock absorbers known as ‘dampers’ by chassis engineers.

Compared with the fixed-rate dampers fitted to the 2012 MKS AWD, the new CCD dampers for the 2013 MKS offer dramatically expanded control range.  CCD utilizes an array of 46 inputs to feed data to a sophisticated control unit that continuously monitors more than 23,000 packets of information per second.  Algorithms react to the data by calculating the optimal damping force every 2-milliseconds or 500 times per second.  The system commands damping force changes 20 times per second (20Hz).  On average, large damper force adjustments (such as firm to soft) occur in just 11 milliseconds.  For engineers, mechanical actions that occur in less than 13 milliseconds are considered real-time actions.  The independent front suspension features these continuously controlled dampers using MacPherson struts, rear-facing L-shaped lower controls arms with an isolated subframe and a 26mm stabilizer bar.  The rear independent multi-link setup includes the continuously controlled dampers over coil springs, stamped steel lower control arms and cast upper control arms.

The system’s powerful processing speed and fast-acting mechanicals enable CCD to constantly read the road surface and continuously adjust damping rates in real time across the three selectable ranges-Sport, Normal and Comfort.  CCD operates so quickly that it can act pre-emptively.

CCD recognizes, for example, when the car is encountering a pothole and can instantly tighten damper control to prevent the wheel and tire from experiencing the full depth of the pothole.  Typically, the damping rate increases by more than 150% versus the system’s softest setting, helping to smooth out an otherwise harsh and jarring event.  The system is so quick that inputs received at the front wheels are then used to prepare the rear wheels to deliver a more refined driving experience.  CCD is always active and it underpins the expanded dynamic capabilities of the new MKS.  It also prevents body roll by up to 20%.  Understeer on the MKS has been reduced by approximately 25%, so the car feels more eager and ready to response.  Further enhancing the refined suspension system is a strut tower brace over the engine to add to the rigidity up front to quicken reaction to your steering inputs.

Lincoln Drive Control is where the magic happens because it pulls all of the car’s adjustable elements-suspension, steering, engine, and gearbox-into one harmonized system.  With Lincoln Drive Control, the new MKS AWD feels sporty, nimble and connected, yet the smooth and quiet Lincoln ride is still there.

Lincoln Drive Control is always at work refining the vehicle’s driving dynamics.  Enabled by features including CCD and electric power-assisted rack & pinion steering, the system continuously integrates handling performance, ride firmness, throttle response, shift feel, steering response and traction control/electronic stability control parameters.  Additionally, Lincoln Drive Control allows you to purposely change the on-road personality of the MKS AWD-Drive Mode-When the gear selector is in Drive, Lincoln Drive Control automatically delivers the ideal Lincoln ride, balancing comfort with confident control and handling.  Many drivers will find this setting perfect for everyday driving as it provides a comfortable drive experience and a direct connection to the road without sacrificing the composure and smooth expected from a luxury sedan.  Sport Mode-When the gear selector is in Sport, Lincoln Drive Control transforms the vehicle’s personality to deliver a more performance-oriented driving experience.  The following systems change settings in Sport Mode-The CCD suspension switches from operating in its comfort range to its firmest sport range, emphasizing handling; the electric power-assisted steering recalibrates to provide more road feel and great steering effort; the engine responds more directly to your inputs; the transmission upshifts at higher rpms. Downshifts become more aggressive and the transmission holds gears longer and during cornering.  Additionally, sixth gear is locked out.  The standard paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel come into play as you can change or hold the gears without taking your hands off the wheel.

Handling the 365 hp and 350 lb.ft. of torque generated by the 3.5 liter twin-turbo direct injected V6 engine is the heavy-duty 6F-55 six-speed automatic sequential transmission which benefits from high-energy friction materials, a larger ring gear and a specific torque converter to handle the high torque output of the twin-turbo.  All-wheel drive is standard with the twin-turbo 3.5 liter V6.  In good weather, over smooth roads at modest speeds and when AWD is not needed, the system intelligently routes power only to the front wheels for improved fuel efficiency.  When driver input or road conditions indicate that slip might occur, the system sends power to the rear wheels to help prevent tire slip, for example on rain-soaked or snow-covered roads.  Beyond providing more traction, AWD also improves handling by helping to reduce understeer, the tendency of the vehicle to ‘push’ in a corner at high speeds.  A myriad of inputs enables the computer-controlled system immediately to identify and react in as little as 16 milliseconds to changing road conditions and drive demands.  The amount of torque sent to the rear axle varies depending on road conditions and dynamic needs.

The MKS AWD steering system receives a thorough makeover for 2013.  The gear ratio is quicker (15:1 vs. 17:1) making the steering more immediately responsive at all speeds.  Additionally, steering boost is now electric rather than hydraulic.  The new electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) complements CCD in contributing to the driver-tunable Lincoln Drive Control experience.

Other enhancements contribute to the system’s overall improved performance.  The steering gear is now solid mounted to the chassis’ front subframe.  Additionally, a brace has been added under the vehicle (across the transmission tunnel) to strengthen the subframe’s mounting points to the chassis.  These details help significantly improve your feeling of being connected to the road through the steering wheel.  Overall steering response for the new 2013 MKS is improved by up to 25%.  EPAS offers additional benefits.  At lower speed, when parking, EPAS provides additional boost for effortless maneuverability.  At higher speeds, EPAS increases steering effort and feedback, giving you a more precise steering feel.  It really works and at high speeds the feel is great and linear.  Also, by replacing the traditional hydraulic assist-steering pump with an electric motor, the EPAS operates only when assistance is needed and it is much lighter.  Furthermore, software-based technologies, undetectable by you, boost the capability of EPAS.  Pull-drift compensation detects road conditions such as a crowned surface or crosswinds and adjusts EPAS to compensate.  Active nibble control automatically cancels some unwanted steering wheel vibrations at interstate speeds.  These actions are designed to give you reassurance and maximum control under all driving conditions.

Drivers are most likely to notice Lincoln’s new Torque Vectoring Control (TVC) system when Lincoln Drive Control is set to Sport Mode.  TVC helps the MKS drive through corners with greater balance and poise.  TVC individually influences the speed of the front wheels to enhance cornering agility by mitigating against a dynamic condition engineers refer to as understeer.  When accelerating through corners and the system detects a drop in traction, TVC precisely applies brake force to the inside front wheel (that has less grip) causing a transfer of engine torque to the outside wheel (that has more grip).  This helps keep the MKS tracking on the driver’s intended line through the corner.  You can now slice through curves with the greatest of ease.

EPAS is also the primary technology behind the optional active parking assist (APA) system.  Once engaged via a switch on the center console, ultrasonic sensors precisely measure open spaces to find a suitable parallel parking spot.  With a few actions (gear shifting, acceleration and braking) the MKS steers itself into the open space.  The driver retains full control of throttle, brakes and shifting the entire time the APA is engaged.

To match the engine’s extra power and the suspension’s additional handling prowess, Lincoln has significantly upgraded the MKS braking system giving you more confidence and control.  New vented front discs measure 13.86 in. more than an inch larger than last year’s model.  They are clamped with dual-piston calipers in aluminum housing.  To enhance brake cooling, the ‘hat’ portion of the front brake disc is also vented, a unique design developed by Ford.  The diameter of the rear discs are 13.58 in. 0.58 in. larger than last year’s model, and they are also vented.  The rear brakes are clamped with single-piston calipers in aluminum housing.  When braking the feel is more direct and linear.  An excellent improvement in confidence building when driving at high speeds!

Another improvement that is privy to Ford is the next generation of the award-winning SYNC system that continues to become easier to use and more robust in its operation.  New, simpler screen designs improve the user interface.  Larger and bolder fonts make screens easier to read.  SYNC’s voice recognition experience, powered by Nuance, also is improved.  Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Auto software platform continues to be the operating platform that will deliver faster response times.  SYNC has evolved from a stand-alone module for communication and entertainment to become a fully integrated operating system for Lincoln vehicles with MyLincoln Touch.  As a further enhancement to the SYNC experience, the standard system in the 2013 MKS provides Operator Assist as a standard SYNC Services feature, allowing users to connect with a live persona free of charge.  SYNC also enables the interior of the MKS to become a Wi-Fi hot spot when linked to a data-enabled cellular device.  With active Wi-Fi, passengers can link to the Web on their tablets or laptops.

More safety technologies include a Lane Keeping System that complements the Lane Keeping Alert with the Lane Keeping Aid that sounds an audio alert then a friendly suggestion of a cup of coffee graphic will appear on the left-hand 4/2 in. instrument cluster.  Collision Warning helps prevent common traffic accidents as forward-looking, long distance radar identifies potential obstacles.  Collision warning is paired with adaptive cruise control because both features use the forward-looking radar system.  Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert can detect vehicles in blind sports during normal driving as well as traffic approaching from the sides when you are reversing out of a parking spot.  Lastly is MYKEY which allows parents or other concerned owners to restrict certain Lincoln MKS features when in the hands of a MyKey driver.  Owners can simply program the vehicle key through the message center to incorporate features such as a limited top speed of 80 mph, prevent deactivation of the Traction Control system that limits tire spin; audio system volume limited to 44% of maximum volume; a speed alert chime at 45,55, or 65 mph.

The dedicated Lincoln design studio has developed a contemporary new look for the 2013 MKS.  Every exterior surface from the A-pillar forward is new, including the grille, HID headlamps, front fascia, hood and front fenders.  Continuing the new look are new 20 in. aluminum wheels.  At the rear, MKS get a new fascia, LED taillights, exhaust tips and anew decklid design that improves access to the trunk.  The styling of the new MKS adds both refinement and elegance to the car while visually lowering and widening the front end.  The continuous bright surround linking the grille and headlights is particularly rich and adds something significant to what is already an expressive balanced design.  The new MKS looks sporty and luxurious from any angle.

Moving over to the interior is a true enjoyment for both body and mind.  It is much more inviting and engaging, with new capactive controls and MyLincoln Touch.  The previous MKS was very linear and horizontal, now MKS is dominated by lines that sweep up from the center stack and flow out to the sides.  Subtle ambient lighting throughout adds to the interior’s luxurious, high-tech environment.  The integration of MyLincoln Touch to the new MKS complements Lincoln’s most advanced instrumentation and controls to date.  The main instrument cluster features a center speedometer flanked by two full-color reconfigurable LCD screens.  Content for the 4.2 in. LCDs is controlled by two five-way buttons on the steering wheel (much easier to use than a central dial on the center console since you do not have to take your eyes off the road to make changes).  An 8 in. multi-function LCD touch screen dominates the center stack and provides the visual and control interface for the entertainment system, phone, navigation and climate controls.

The new MKS offers two audio systems, both controlled through MyLincoln Touch.  The standard system includes AM-FM-CD-MP3-Satilliate sources playing through a 210-watt system driving 10-speakers.  The optional, world-class system is the THX II Certified Audio System with AM-FM-CD-DVD-MP3-HD radio capability and 16-speakers, including a 10 in. subwoofer.  Sirius XM Traffic and Sirius XM Travel link with voice-activated navigation controls also are optional.  MyLincoln Touch and SYNC enable voice-activated navigation control.  In addition to an easily updatable navigation database, additional Sirius XM Travel link features include coast-to-coast weather date, forecasts, fuel prices, sports scores, movie listing and more.

Lincoln style is supported by equipment that enhances occupant comfort.  Standard heated and cooled 12-way adjustable front seats are so comfortable and supportive, adjustable pedals and a power tilt/telescoping/leather and wood wrapped steering feels perfect in your hands and allows a wide range of drivers to feel immediately at home behind the wheel.  Class-leading available equipment also includes a retractable rear sun shade and new multi-contour adjustable front seats and a heated steering wheel.  The optional multi-contour seats incorporate seven computer-controlled air bladders to provide front occupants with maximum adjustment.  Four sections in the seat bottom and three in the seat back can be adjusted.  Both driver and passenger seats feature individual static settings as well as dynamic massage settings.  The seat surfaces are provided by world-renowned leather maker Bridge of Weir leather company.  Sourced from Scotland, Bride of Weir leather also can be found in luxury jets, yachts and furniture.  Connoisseurs of fine materials appreciate these leathers for their nature beauty and the company uses a unique organic tanning method which produces a material free of chromium making it one of the most environmentally friendly, and fully recyclable.  New woods (Prussian Burl and Brown Swirl Walnut and leather colors (Hazelnut and Light Dune) complete the extensive list of interior changes of the new MKS.

Standard equipment not mentioned above includes foglamps, heated power mirrors with memory, easy-exit seats/steering column, dual-zone climate control, rear vents and pull-down center armrest in the rear, remote start, all express power windows/door locks, 19X8 in. aluminum wheels/tires, power reverse sensing system, center console with leather-wrapped shift knob, dual cupholders, storage bin with leather armrest, rear reading lamps, dual map lamps, grab handles above all passenger door, thick cut-pile carpeting/floor mats front/rear, and remote trunk release.  Options not mentioned above include rearview camera, active front/rear parking assist, navigation system, heated rear seats, dual panel sunroof.

Standard safety systems include front and side airbags upfront, side curtain airbags, AdvanceTrak with Electronic Stability Control, SOS post-crash system anti-theft system, 3-point airbags with front pretensioners/load limiters, front/rear crumple zones, steel beams in each door, engine immobilizer, LATCH system for child seats and child-proof rear door locks.

The newly updated Lincoln MKS AWD EcoBoost full-size luxury sport sedan is ready to attain what it has been seeking for many years, to be on par with the world’s great full-size luxury sport sedans from M-B, BMW, Audi, Lexus LS and Infiniti M.  With 365 hp the MKS needs just a little more horsepower that can fix that deficiency and become a great choice for luxury buyers throughout the world.  It has everything, and more, that the competition has.

2013 Porsche Cayenne

Though it’s been in Porsche’s range for nearly a decade, the Cayenne remains a controversial subject for brand loyalists who see the sports car as the true heart of the marque. Nevertheless, the Cayenne’s success for Porsche can’t be denied, and with the addition of a new diesel model for the 2013 model year, it looks as though its…

Infiniti Unexpectedly Changing All Model Names to Q, QX for 2014, Confirms New Range-Topping Sedan

By Justin Berkowitz

In a several-decade race to the bottom that has seen automakers throw out perfectly comprehensible model names and replace them with dyslexia-inducing jumbles of letters and numbers, Infiniti may have just touched the floor. The company announced tonight that henceforth, each of its cars will be called Q followed by a two-digit number, while the SUVs will be QX backed by a two-digit number. Those numbers correspond just to the vehicle’s position in the Infiniti hierarchy, not to engine displacement (what Infiniti used to do), nor to hypothetical engine displacement (what BMW does now), nor to number of cylinders (what Audi once did).

What this means is that the next-generation G37 sedan—which launches at the Detroit auto show in a few weeks—and G37 coupe will be rechristened as the Q50 and Q60, respectively. The 2013 M37 and M56 sedans will be replaced with the 2014 Q70, a vehicle that’s different only in terms of the badge glued on the back. Infiniti’s SUVs, too, follow suit. The EX37, JX35, FX37/56, and QX56 are being redubbed QX50, QX60, QX70, and QX80.

Heaven only knows what they’ll call the upcoming halo sports car—the QR? the QE2?—nor the upcoming range-topping sedan, which the company announced today, that will sit above the Q70-née-M56.

Dissected: Lotus-Based Infiniti Emerg-E Sports-Car Concept - Feature

This is Fatuous at Best, Disastrous At Worst

The renaming is Johan de Nysschen’s first big, visible move since taking the CEO spot at Infiniti in July. Lured from Audi, de Nysschen’s charge is to reposition Infiniti from Acura-level purveyor of leathery Nissans to a global luxury brand that can rake in money from beyond the borders of NAFTA. One needn’t squint to see the parallels between Audi’s model names and what de Nysschen just announced for Infiniti. Was it impossible to resist the temptation to say Infiniti has a car that’s ten times as good as Audi’s Q7?

Even in the many countries where Nissan is launching the Infiniti brand from a completely blank slate, this is a questionable plan for all but the most obsessive-compulsive among us. But with cars, branding, marketing, and mental association already established in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, Infiniti is giving itself—fine, we’ll say it—an infinite uphill battle.

A product lineup with extremely similar names, differentiated only by common, round, evenly spaced numbers is virtually impossible to remember. This problem isn’t unique to Infiniti’s new scheme—how many times have you heard someone say “the Lexus SUV” rather than RX350—but these are especially poorly chosen model names. The industry’s proclivity for groupthink has also given us a situation in which Infiniti will sell a QX60 crossover against Volvo’s XC60, the BMW X6, and the upcoming Audi Q6.

The generally car-aware public, potential customers, current owners (who are de facto brand ambassadors), and sales staff will have a difficult time retaining any lasting impression about Infiniti’s products. Any name recognition and equity that Infiniti has built for the G and FX in particular during the past few years is now vapor. Speaking tonight, de Nysschen said “We will have to explain to customers why they will no longer be able to buy a G or an FX,” even though essentially the same products still exist.

When Lincoln Marked Itself to Death

This way of thinking is pervasive in the industry. Ford’s Lincoln brand—which, unlike Infiniti, hasn’t had a truly exciting product since the LS—has never recovered from Elena Ford’s push to emulate the successful Mark-number line by calling every Lincoln an MK-something. That switchover, too, included an on-the-fly name change for a car, meaning dealers were selling Zephyrs one model year and face-lifted MKZs the next.

In another heritage play, Volkswagen tried rebranding the fifth-gen Golf as the Rabbit in the U.S. The word “Rabbit” never appeared on the cars, with chrome rabbit symbols on the tailgate the only indication that VW, too, thought confusing customers was a route to sales. It wasn’t, and VW returned to calling its hatchback the Golf when the sixth-gen car arrived a few years later. Make no mistake, if this toxically ineffective thinking had spread to Silicon Valley, Apple would be selling IIE-10 and IIE-20 phones and tablets—and probably not in big numbers.

As part of today’s announcement, Infiniti highlighted the nobility of “Q” models in its lineage, right back to the Q45. Whether the Q45 was an exceptional sports sedan in its day or has been elevated to legend in posthumous mythmaking, it doesn’t matter now: The Q45′s reputation is sterling. In that car was proof that Infiniti could compete with BMW’s finest sports sedans. Now, in an era when BMW sells a Z4 sDrive35is, isn’t it appropriate that Infiniti respond with its own abstruse naming scheme?

Video: Jaguar lets first outsiders drive new F-Type

By Jonathon Ramsey

What do you do when you’re an automaker with an all-new and brand-defining sports car, one of them with a supercharged V8 cranking out 495 horsepower? You let proven race drivers test them out on track and on the road.

And what do you do if you’re Jaguar and you’re in that situation? Why, naturally, you make a video of it. That’s how we get footage of racers Martin Brundle, Justin Bell and Christian Danner being choppered into the UK‘s Snetterton track to test the V6-equipped Jaguar F-Type S prototype. Then when they’re finished with kerb-lined apexes, they take the V8 S prototype out onto the roads to run it through hedge-lined apexes.

According to one of them, “very fast, very nimble, great engine” is what will soon be headed our way. Check it out in the video below.

Pa. prosecutor: Steroids found in Reid's room

An investigation into the fatal heroin overdose of Garrett Reid, the oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, revealed there were steroids in his room the day he died, a Pennsylvania prosecutor said Monday.

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said that anabolic steroids were found in the room where Garrett Reid was staying when he overdosed on heroin Aug. 5 during Eagles training camp. Reid was helping the team’s strength and conditioning coach at the time of his death.

Morganelli said there was no evidence that Reid was giving the steroids to any Eagles players, and that investigators could not determine if the drugs were for Reid’s own use or for distribution.

He showed little appetite for a deeper probe.

“The issue of steroids, it’s an illegal substance in Pennsylvania law. It has probably more significance in the sports world. But since it did not appear to be related to his death, we’re not pursuing that any further,” Morganelli said.

Eagles Chairman Jeffrey Lurie called the news of the steroids disappointing, and noted that neither the organization nor the players were aware or involved with anything related to steroids.

“It’s clear the conduct in which he apparently engaged runs counter to the values and principles mandated for everyone associated with our organization. We have spoken with the league office and have pledged our full cooperation with their requests should there be any,” Lurie said.

“While we remained saddened by the tragic end of a young man’s life and know how hard this must be for the entire Reid family, we are extremely confident that Garrett’s actions were unknown to those around him and did not involve our football team.”

Reid’s body was found in his dorm room at Lehigh University in Bethlehem. A coroner said the 29-year-old died of an accidental heroin overdose.

Lehigh University police were called to the dorm room around 7:20 a.m. on Aug. 5, arriving after Eagles team physician Dr. Omar Elkhamra had tried to revive him with a defibrillator.

Investigators searching his room found a used syringe and spoon, along with a gym bag filled with dozens of syringes and needles, many of them unopened, as well as 19 vials of an unknown liquid.

Testing revealed the vials contained four types of anabolic steroids, Morganelli said.

But said he did not have any evidence that Reid was distributing steroids to players.

Asked how aggressively his office and Lehigh University‘s police department pursued the question, Morganelli said: “Lots of interviews were conducted by the police. And I can’t go into all of them, but all I can say is that we could not provide any evidence or substantiate that anybody in the Eagles organization was involved in this, or whether or not this was for his personal use. It was just undetermined.”

He acknowledged the quantity found could have been intended for distribution, “but what I’m saying is I have no evidence of that, that there was any distribution by Mr. Reid, either here or anywhere else.”

The prosecutor said he had not been in touch either with the NFL or the Eagles organization.

In a statement, Andy Reid said he was “confident that my son’s decisions did not affect our football team in any way.”

“I cannot apologize enough for any adverse appearances that my son’s actions may have for an organization and a community that has been nothing but supportive of our family,” the Eagles coach said.

It wasn’t clear if Reid had steroids in his system at the time of his death. Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek did not immediately return a phone call

Once the corner determined that Reid had succumbed to heroin, investigators focused on learning who had supplied him with it, combing through Reid’s phone records to see who he was calling and texting before his death. But Morganelli said that probe ran into a dead end.

“It cannot be determined whether Mr. Reid obtained heroin here in the Lehigh Valley or brought it with him to training camp from elsewhere,” Morganelli said, adding that Lehigh University police has closed the investigation.

Reid seemed to have rebounded from a long struggle with drug abuse.

He was sentenced to nearly two years in prison for a 2007 high-speed car crash that injured another driver. Police said Reid was high on heroin, and they found the drug and more than 200 pills in his car.

More recently, exercise and training had become his passion and he aspired to make it a career. At the time of his death, he had been helping strength and conditioning coach Barry Rubin. But an autopsy revealed his body showed signs of chronic drug use.

Reid’s younger brother, Britt, has also struggled with drug use and was arrested on the same day as Garrett in 2007 after a road-rage incident. Police discovered weapons and drugs in Britt Reid‘s vehicle. He now works as a graduate assistant coach at Temple.

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette peeks its nose out from an unlikely corner

Corvette Drawing

What looks to be an official General Motors service bulletin for the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette has leaked out onto the internet. The page clearly shows what we assume is the nose of the next-generation sports car as part of the front brake cooling deflector kit installation information. From the line drawing, it appears as if the 2014 Corvette will feature a familiar front profile with tall fenders that slope inward to the hood. Speaking of the hood, aggressive air inlets dominate the bodywork toward the front. The car’s trademark gills look to have grown in size as well, with a dramatic inset tucked just behind the front wheel well.

From what we can see, the 2014 Corvette will abandon its low and wide headlamp arrays for more vertical pieces that extend well into the lower fascia. The face looks good, even in black and white. And while there seems to be more than a little Ferrari influence in the design, you certainly won’t hear us complain.

Latest C7 Corvette Teaser Shows Chevy (Finally) Rethinking The Interior: Video

By Kurt Ernst

By nearly anyone’s standards, the current C6 Corvette is a remarkable sports car. Even in base form, the Corvette is capable of truly impressive on-track performance, yet it doesn’t punish those who prefer to use it as a daily driver. We’d go so far as to call the Corvette an easy car to drive fast, since its electro-nannies forgive a lot of sins made by inexperienced drivers. On the track, with the stability control programming turned off, however, the Corvette still overlooks a lot more ham-fistedness than a first-generation Viper or even a Mustang GT.

One area where the Corvette has always turned up lacking is its interior, specifically its seats. Even in higher-end models, the seats are best described as an afterthought (and we’re being generous here). Perhaps they’re light in weight, but they’re also flimsy and uncomfortably for anything resembling long-distance driving.

Chevrolet has heard this complaint before, yet it’s been idle as others have stepped up their game. The new Viper, for example, uses seats from Sabelt, the same company that supplies Ferrari. Even the Ford Mustang now has superb Recaro seats listed as an option, one we would gladly pay more money for.

As the latest Corvette teaser video shows, Chevrolet looks to be treating the new Corvette’s interior to a serious redesign. We hope that’s the case, sine the inside of the last Corvette was one of the few areas that needed improvement. In less than one month, we’ll finally learn all the details.

Corvette Interior Teaser - video screencap

Critics have long taken delight in bashing the Chevrolet Corvette for the sports car’s sub-par cabin execution, but the latest teaser for the C7 seems to indicate the next generation machine will bow with much nicer materials. The quick teaser video below shows workers whipping around massive swaths of leather, stitching hides together with contrasting thread and plenty of carbon fiber trim. This is all excellent news. The latest teaser joins a spate of videos showing snippets of the upcoming halo car from General Motors.

We’ve already seen what it took to bring the car from concept to reality and what the vehicle’s gauges will look like, but we’ll have to wait a bit longer to get our eyes on the finished product. The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette is set to receive its world debut on January 13 at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Stay tuned. In the interim, check out the latest teaser video below below.

Review: 2013 BMW 750Li

Bavarian Hustler Gets Solid Update Including Stunning New iDrive

2013 BMW 750Li

For a while now, the absolute and rather uncontested king of big luxury executive sedan sales worldwide has been the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Among the obvious competition, there has been an almost unspoken agreement that this is so, and that it shall remain so for our lifetimes. Clearly, this is regardless of the fact that the motoring press – i.e. we the so-called “experts” – have generally preferred this generation of Audi A8/S8, or the sporting BMW 7 Series in its various trims. But hey, what do we know?

Deliveries of this midlife-update BMW 750Li to US dealers began back at the end of September, and we waited deliberately until now to delve deeply into it. Visually, aside from some small aesthetic changes, there is little difference on the surface between this 2013 model and the 2012 model it replaces, the main change being that it gets the latest edition of BMW‘s iDrive system, which in software terms is version 4.2.

We’ll get to that, but there have actually been upgrades to the twin-turbocharged V8 (“N63B44” to those in the know) that renders this big Bimmer more of a sports car in its class, even in the long-wheelbase form tested here. Output is up by over eleven percent to 443 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, torque now stands at 479 pound-feet for a more modest gain of just under seven percent between 2,000 and 4,500 revs. Acceleration to 60 miles per hour is claimed at 4.7 seconds using the eight-speed Steptronic automatic, a time that seems almost freakishly quick for a 4,660-pounder that stretches 17.1 feet from bumper to bumper.

The best photo printers you can buy today

Photo printers have their place, even when you can post images online in a pinch, or send them to a third-party printing service. A good photo printer (along with a good photo-editing software package) gives you customization and quality control that you’ll never get through other means. It also spares you the hassle of waiting for shipping or dealing with in-store pickup. During the holidays and at other special times, photo printers come in handy for slipping a few choice memories into a greeting card, a gift, or Grandma’s purse.

Mainstream printers with impressive photo quality

Just about any mainstream inkjet printer or multifunction model can produce a nice photo, but the following models boast especially good image quality. Pay attention to media: Plain paper intended for inkjet printing, or special photo papers, will create better results than a general-purpose paper stock.

The HP Photosmart 7520 is a home-oriented multifunction printer with a big touchscreen control panel and input trays for both plain and photo paper. This MFP also sports a few office-friendly extras, including an automatic document feeder for the scanner.

The Epson Expression Premium XP-800 Small-in-One Printer does the HP unit a few better, offering faster print times and adding CD/DVD printing (to specially coated media) to its long list of features. Its midnight-blue case coloring is a refreshing departure from the basic-black color scheme that’s currently trendy.

Yoga programs in public schools face backlash

Public school yoga instructor Katie Campbell proudly looks out at 23 first graders as they contain their squirming in a kid-friendly version of the lotus position.

In a voice barely above a whisper, she says into her microphone: “Why look at everyone showing me they’re ready for yoga. A-plus, plus, plus!”

Then the lesson begins with deep breathing and stretches common to many yoga classes. But there is no chanting of “om,” no words spoken in the Indian language of Sanskrit nor talk of “mindfulness” or clasping hands in the prayer position.

Campbell avoids those potential pitfalls for the Encinitas Union School District, which is facing the threat of a lawsuit as it launches what is believed to be the country’s most comprehensive yoga program for a public school system.

Parents opposed to the program say the classes will indoctrinate their children in Eastern religion and are not just for exercise.

It’s a debate public schools across the country are increasingly facing with the rising popularity of the practice and the recent dispute over school prayer.

Yoga is now taught at public schools from the rural mountains of West Virginia to the bustling streets of Brooklyn as a way to ease stress in today’s pressure-packed world where even kindergartners say they feel tense about keeping up with their busy schedules. But most classes are part of an after-school program, or are offered only at a few schools or by some teachers in a district.

Encinitas is believed to be the only public school system that will have yoga instructors teach full-time at its nine schools as part of an overall wellness curriculum that includes nutrition and a school garden program, among other things.

“This is 21st century P.E. (physical education) for our schools,” said Encinitas Superintendent Timothy B. Baird. “It’s physical. It’s strength-building. It increases flexibility but it also deals with stress reduction and focusing, which kickball doesn’t do.”

The program is expected to teach a 30-minute yoga lesson to roughly 5,000 students twice a week at the district’s schools, which run kindergarten through sixth grade. It is funded with a $533,000 grant from the Jois Foundation, a nonprofit whose board of directors includes the son of the late Indian instructor Krishna Pattabhi Jois, whose teachings are said to have popularized Ashtanga yoga in the Western world and were followed by Madonna and Sting.

The Jois Foundation‘s program director Russell Case said Encinitas is building a national yoga model for public schools.

“Kids are under a lot of stress. There are a lot of mandates on them to perform. We think it would be extremely helpful to have 10 to 15 minutes possible to sit and be reflective instead of go, go, go,” he said.

Researchers at the University of Virginia and University of San Diego will study the program, including analyzing data on students’ resting heart rates.

They want to know if public schools can impact not only children’s learning, but instill in them good eating habits and skills to help their well-being.

The program started in several schools in September but will go district-wide in January after months of protests by a group of parents.

Mary Eady pulled her first-grade son out of the classes.

Eady said she observed a kindergarten class in which the children did the motions referred to in yoga practices as a sun salutation. The folded over children, stood upright, sweeping up their arms toward the sky.

She said while the teacher called it an “opening sequence” the connotation was the same in her mind: Students were learning to worship the sun, which went against her Christian beliefs that only God should be worshipped.

“It will change the way you think,” she said. “What they are teaching is inherently spiritual, it’s just inappropriate therefore in our public schools.”

Their attorney, Dean Broyles, says they are considering suing to halt the program.

Despite the long debate over prayer in school, constitutional law experts say the courts still have not clearly defined what constitutes religion.

“You might get litigation on a program like this because it’s not totally settled what the boundaries of religion are,” said New York University law professor Adam Samaha.

He points to the 1979 ruling by a federal court that blocked transcendental meditation classes from being taught in New Jersey public schools, deeming those particular lessons to be religious.

But the court did not go so far as to rule that meditation in general is and Samaha thinks courts would not deem yoga a religious practice. If they did, it would open the door to scrutinizing a host of activities.

“It’s practiced by enough people, who probably don’t believe they are engaging in a religious practice,” he said.

Still, Encinitas Assistant Superintendent David Miyashiro said administrators are not taking any risks.

“In light of all the attention, it’s not enough to remove things with cultural references but also anything that can be perceived by onlookers as a concern,” he said. “We think it’s important to keep this program in our schools and we’re going to do what we can to protect it.”

At Flora Vista Elementary School, those precautions were apparent.

“Spread out, we’re getting ready for some airplane,” Campbell said as the children laid on their mats face down and spread their arms, arching their back and then flopping back down. Later she said: “now push back to downward dog.”

At the end, the children sprawled on their backs to relax like a “pancake” as the lights went off. There were soft giggles. Some wiggled in the dark or fiddled with their socks.

“We’re like melting cheese,” Campbell reminded the students.

Principal Stephanie Casperson said fewer children now come to her office for acting out.

“I have teachers who say before a test now students do yoga to calm themselves so they’re transferring it into the classroom, into their lives,” she said.

During a recent fire drill, 6-year-old Sylvia Lawrence said she folded over into a yoga position under her desk.

“It made the fire drill more fun,” she said.

Maria Walsh, 11, said she was never into other sports.

“It’s just a fun way for me to exercise,” said the freckled, blond-haired girl with a big smile.

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

Nissan 370Z

Though it’s only four years old, the Nissan 370Z draws on a history of more than four decades, tracing its roots to the original Datsun 240Z first released in late 1969. Though many changes have happened over the years, the two-door sports car layout has remained unchanged. The original Z cars used in-line six-cylinder engines, but by the third…
