Report: Mercedes-Benz SLC to arrive mid-2015

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Although we’re still not entirely sure what Mercedes is planning to call its new sub-SLS coupe, more potential information about the car is starting to come to light. After Mercedes released official “spy shots” (shown above) back in June, Auto Express is saying that we might have to wait until 2015 to see this production version on the road.

Potential names for the car include SLC and the return of the SLR name, but regardless of what it will be called, this car is aimed squarely at the Porsche 911. Previously, we heard the new Mercedes could start under $100,000, but this report says that the new coupe will carry a base price of around $122,000, while a Black Series model could go for around $180,000 (both prices converted from British pounds). In any case, seems it’ll be a few more years before we actually know for sure.

Video: Test drive the Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive with Chris Harris

By Michael Harley

Filed under:

It’s hard to not like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT. The all-aluminum coupe is fitted with a wonderful naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Not only does the burly combustion engine launch the two-seater to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds, but it does so with one of the world’s greatest exhaust soundtracks as it roars, burbles and cackles down the road.

But what happens when Mercedes-Benz takes away the V8 and its accompanying fire-burning song? Stripped of one of its most appealing assets, does the SLS lose its soul?

Chris Harris recently had the opportunity to take the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive for a track spin in Europe. Sans gasoline, but with four electric motors providing a combined 740 horsepower (737 pound-feet of torque), all-electric all-wheel drive coupe uses sophisticated torque vectoring and a multi-mode operating system to put oversteer – drifting! – back into the equation. Fun? You bet. See for yourself, below.

2014 Mercedes-Benz First Drive: A $500,000 Track-Ready Eco Toy

By Eric Tingwall

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive boasts a 120-mile range and 738 horsepower, but don’t believe for a minute that you can enjoy both at the same time. When pushed to its full potential, the electric SLS won’t make it two laps around the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife. This great conundrum—manage the battery range or exercise the car’s muscle—makes the great power of the SLS ED sort of, well, a limp proposition. READ MORE ››

Report: Mercedes rules out hybrid supercar, promises SLS successor

By John Neff

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT - red - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

The recent Geneva Motor Show was a festival of hypercars, with the presence of not one, but three over-the-top debuts: the Lamborghini Veneno, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LeFerrari. The latter two have hitched their carbon fiber bumpers to the electrification bandwagon by using hybrid-electric powertrains not entirely unlike the propulsion systems we’ve come to know in cars like the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. Does that mean the flow of electrons up the four-wheeled food chain will eventually consume our hallowed supercars? Not if AMG has anything to say about it.

AMG Director of Vehicle Development Tobias Moers recently confirmed that not only will there be a successor to the Mercedes-Benz performance division’s SLS AMG, he notes that its internal combustion engine will most definitely not be sharing living quarters with an electric drivetrain. Instead, AMG plans to focus on further pushing the power and efficiency envelope of the internal combustion engine and advancing the use of lightweight materials to achieve their goals. The first example of this effort can be seen in the new SLS AMG Black Series that incorporates many weight-saving techniques to shed some 154 pounds from the SLS AMG GT (above), which itself is lighter than the standard SLS AMG.

Furthermore, Moers remarks that his company is happy to leave the hypercar segment to companies like Ferrari and McLaren. He admits that, “Ferrari in the hyper-car segment is still a different brand than AMG. We have to be honest…” So rather than taking the SLS further upmarket to do battle with bulls and stallions, Moers hinted that the next-generation SLS may be joined by another performance model that fits neatly between itself and the C63 AMG.

Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept: No Need for the ED Badges, This Boat Screams It

By Andrew Wendler

AMG Electric Drive powerboat

Just days after the revealing a G63-inspired powerboat, Mercedes-Benz AMG and Cigarette Racing are at it again, this time creating a speedboat that shares more than just a customer demographic. Officially named the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive concept, the vessel is not only inspired by the SLS AMG Electric Drive, but shares a fair bit of hardware with the car as well.

Pop the engine cover on the boat, and buried within are 12 liquid-cooled, permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors very similar to those found under the hood of the electrified SLS. The electric motors are arranged in two banks of six, and power is channeled through a pair of transmissions and outdrives. While all performance data is regarded as preliminary, AMG and Cigarette are quoting figures of 2220 horsepower and 2212 lb-ft of torque, with a top speed of more than 100 mph. The horsepower and torque figures check out considering the boat features three-times as many motors as the car, and the SLS Electric Drive produces 740 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque—roughly a third of the boat’s output. AMG and Cigarette are claiming their creation to be the “world’s fastest electrically driven motorboat,” a claim we’ll buy purely on the basis that the number of attempts to build a 2200-plus-hp electric-powered offshore race boat surely is miniscule.

As where the SLS AMG Electric Drive uses a single 60-kWh battery comprised of 12 modules, the boat uses four of those batteries (a 240-kWh capacity) consisting of 48 modules. Two 22-kW on-board chargers lifted from the car require approximately seven hours to recharge; to reduce the charging time to “less than three hours,” Cigarette offers two additional on-board quick chargers as an option. Cigarette and AMG have yet to reveal the weight of the four battery packs on board, but if we use the comparable—if not identical—battery pack from the SLS, which weighs 1208 pounds, we estimate the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive concept is toting roughly 4800-pounds worth of batteries. For reference the G63-inspired powerboat the pair debuted earlier this week has a fuel tank capable of carrying 500 gallons, or just about 3000 pounds. Of course, while the batteries never will become lighter as their energy storage is depleted, they are located low down in the boat to “ensure sublime handling characteristics during more dynamic changes of direction.”

The exclusive matte chromatic AMG Electricbeam Magno finish is lifted directly from the SLS AMG E-Cell prototype we drove nearly three years ago, as is, according to Mercedes, the instrument display. Fitted dials featuring AMG logos over the same extroverted paint color sit behind the wheel, providing information about current motor output, speed, battery voltage, and of course, the battery’s state of charge.

The big question is range; what good is a 100-mph offshore powerboat if it can’t make the …read more

Official: Mercedes AMG and Cigarette Racing debut 2,220-HP electric motor boat

By Sebastian Blanco

Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept

Filed under:

Take the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell, stretch it and take off the wheels then make it float and you’ve basically got the just-unveiled Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept. Powered by an all-electric powertrain that offers 2,200 horsepower and 2,213 pound-feet of torque (and uses “numerous components” taken from the not-quite-as-yellow SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive), the sleek concept is being called the “world’s most powerful electric drive powerboat.” What that means is a top speed of over 100 miles per hour from four 60-kWh lithium-ion batteries and two banks of six liquid-cooled, permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors. And the 240 kWh of total energy should provide plenty of juice out on the water.

Launched (but not literally) at the Miami International Boat Show today, the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept is the result of a partnership between Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing. The boat is 38 feet long (much longer than the 15-foot SLS) and is plastered with AMG branding on the sides and top of the bow above the matte chrome yellow paint (officially called AMG Electricbeam mango). Two 220-kW chargers can refill the batteries, dockside, in about seven hours.

The idea of a powerful electric boat is nothing new (Henrik Fisker talked about a plug-in hybrid watercraft late last year), but this is the first time we’ve seen Mercedes put its EV technology on the water. Anyone who’s afraid of driving an EV in the rain should take note. Check out the complete press release below.

Mercedes-Benz AMG and Cigarette Racing Reveal G63-Inspired Speedboat

By Alexander Stoklosa

Mercedes-AMG Cigarette Racing 42 Huntress

Mercedes-Benz AMG and the Cigarette Racing Team have announced a new special-edition offshore speedboat created in the likeness of Benz’s over-the-top G63 AMG. The new boat is making its debut at the big Miami international boat show this week. To state the obvious, the connection between the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG and this Cigarette Racing Huntress speedboat the Benz SUV supposedly inspired is tenuous at best.

The only rock crawling the boat is likely to undertake involves one of its well-heeled owners dipping into the Cristal and making an unintended beach landing; the closest the G63 will get to a sea voyage is wading through a deep puddle at the local boutique parking lot. But the G63 is cool, and Cigarette boats are cool—at least to those who grew up idolizing 1980s-era Miami—so mixing the former’s mojo with the latter should be supercool, right? Right?

Mercedes-AMG Cigarette Racing 42 Huntress

Regardless, this isn’t the first collaboration between Cigarette and AMG; the two brands previously cooked up an SLS-inspired speedboat, which featured neat AMG lettering and a stripey paint job. And though there are few apparent similarities between the G63 and the Huntress, they’re really not terribly different in concept. Both vehicles have a strong Not-of-This-Era vibe, gulp fuel, are sort of ridiculous, and we wouldn’t be shocked to see either being frantically piloted by someone wearing a dusting of white powder on their upper lip whist running from a gaggle of ATF agents.

Furthermore, the Huntress measures 42 feet from bow to stern, holds 500 gallons of fuel, weighs nearly 19,000 pounds, and has a top speed of 78 mph. Those specs more or less—emphasis on the more and the less parts—mirror those of the huge-gantic-feeling G63, save for the top speed, which in the Benz is a higher but altogether more frightening 130 mph. Oh, and the Huntress is powered by five Mercury outboard motors, thoroughly spanking the single-engined (but twin-turbocharged!) G63 in the manhood-measurement department.

But any head-to-head technical comparisons between the G-wagen and the Huntress are as pointless as pitting Free Willy against an elephant. Instead, we imagine the two vehicles are more likely to augment one another—as well as a small Cessna airplane—in a well-to-do cartel leader’s transportation trifecta. Or so we imagine through our Miami Vice–tinted BluBlockers.

Report: New details emerge on forthcoming Mercedes-Benz SLC

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Last we heard, the Mercedes-Benz SLC had been put on indefinite hold, but now Car Magazine is reporting that the Porsche 911-fighting “Baby SLS” coupe could be on sale by 2015. Riding on a modified SLS AMG chassis, the smaller and lighter SLC could be priced in the sub-$100,000 price bracket.

We’d already heard that the new car would feature conventional doors (instead of SLS-like gullwing doors), but this report focuses on some of the possible powertrains Mercedes-Benz is likely to use. At launch, the SLC could offer a pair of V8-powered models – a 485-horsepower SLC and a 585-hp SLC S – both being powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. About a year after launch, a new V6 model could emerge giving the SLC an estimated 333 horsepower and its lowest price point.

It also sounds like the car’s name hasn’t been completely finalized as some people within Mercedes are favoring a return of the SLR name.

Mercedes-Benz SLC AMG to Receive V-6 Power, Sources Say

By Jens Meiners

2015 Mercedes-Benz AMG SLC Rendering

A little more than three years ago, Mercedes-Benz revealed its SLS AMG, and already, Benz’s performance division is in high gear working on a smaller and more nimble sports car designed to complement its high-performance supercar. It will most likely be called SLC, even though that model designation previously served to denote the oversized, slightly lethargic four-seater version of the 1970s SL roadster, which was built until 1981.

The SLC, which we previewed a year ago, will use a shortened version of the aluminum frame and structure of the SLS, which remains in production. The SLC will be a two-seater and feature traditional doors—none of the SLS’s gullwings or the SLR McLaren‘s scissor doors here. While we originally anticipated that the company would make use of the M159 6.2-liter V-8, or its detuned M156 variation, British publication Car reports that the SLC actually will receive an entry-level 3.0-liter V-6, which would make around 330 horsepower and bring the price right down into base-model Porsche 911 territory.

There also will be two V-8–powered versions, writes Car, motivated by two variations of a new 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8: the first is known internally as M177 and will produce nearly 500 horsepower, and the second, M178, will make close to 600 horsepower. Another engine that would fit the package well is the M157 naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V-8 that currently powers the SLK55 AMG. No all-wheel drive will be offered, and an automatic transmission will be standard. Down the road, AMG could offer a roadster version of the SLC. All of this seems to be squarely aimed at the Porsche 911 and its various derivatives, and Mercedes clearly wants to get as much out of the architecture as possible.

All of a sudden, there is a lot of activity in the segment. With the new Corvette, the Jaguar F-type, and now the SLC, times might suddenly become tough for the Porsche 911.

Quick Spin: 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Coupe

By Michael Harley

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT

Mercedes-Benz upgraded its SLS flagship Coupe and Roadster for the 2013 model year, and the changes are marked with them new “GT” nomenclature. Both SLS models arrive with a retuned naturally aspired 6.2-liter V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque (the horses are up from 563, but the torque remains the same) mated to a revised seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch gearbox. Rounding out the mechanical upgrades is a redeveloped AMG two-mode adaptive suspension. Physically, the revised models are differentiated by their new “GT” badging, darkened headlight/taillight buckets, red brake calipers, unique wheel colors and high gloss finish on the front grille, exterior mirrors and hood/fender fins. Inside the cabin are new red seatbelts, Alcantara upholstery and contrasting red stitching.

As it is nearly impossible to experience the aluminum gullwing beast on public roads, Mercedes invited out to Southern California’s Willow Springs to wring out the 2013 SLS GT Coupe on a racing circuit.

Driving Notes

  • It was impossible to feel the horsepower bump from the driver’s seat (the track’s 2,000-foot elevation negated the increase anyway), but the free-breathing V8 sounds even more spectacular each time I meet it. Gobs of low-end torque, a responsive throttle and a willingness to race to redline (7,200 rpm) make it a near-perfect driver’s companion. The automaker quotes a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds – traction at launch is a problem – with a top speed of 197 miles per hour. The SLS attacked the Streets of Willow with voraciousness. I’ve driven hundreds of laps on the circuit, but never in a vehicle so powerful that I needed to brake hard to make Turn One after rocketing down the straight (running clockwise).
  • After finding myself bumping off the limiter repeatedly while using the wheel-mounted paddles in manual mode (an LED shift light blinks red at the top of the cluster), I put the gearbox in Sport Plus and let computers do the thinking. Overall, I was pleased with its intuitiveness and I really enjoyed the throttle blips on the downshifts.
  • A near complete lack of body roll and very firm AMG Sport suspension (I chose the damper’s softest setting to combat the surface’s broken pavement) meant the rear end would break loose mid-corner if the power was applied abruptly. Smoothness and consistent throttle applications were imperative to keeping the rear end planted and exiting the corner with the nose pointed down the track. Overall balance was impressively neutral and weight distribution, fore and aft, was easily controlled with the accelerator pedal.
  • The 15.4-inch perforated front steel rotors could take plenty of abuse, but I preferred the optional carbon-ceramic brake setup as they felt unaffected by the heat generated on the tight track. As an added benefit, they weigh less and look even better through the forged spokes on the wheels.
  • Driven back-to-back on the track, the updated Coupe and Roadster were nearly identical dynamically (they both weigh 3,573 pounds). From a driver’s perspective, the exhaust note is more pronounced in the Roadster and there was more wiggle room for my helmeted head beneath its soft convertible top. Still, I wouldn’t want to give up those signature gullwing doors.
