Calif. man describes night wife cut off penis

The estranged husband of a woman charged with severing his penis said it was as though his life ended the evening of the attack.

The man cried as he testified Wednesday at the trial of Catherine Kieu (KYOO), saying the 2011 attack caused him excruciating pain.

Orange County prosecutor John Christl (CRYSTAL) said Kieu was in a jealous rage so she laced his food with sleeping pills, tied him to a bed, severed his penis and then put it in the garbage disposal.

City News Service reports that the penis couldn’t be reattached.

Kieu’s attorneys said a traumatic childhood and an abusive marriage put Kieu in a mental state where she can’t be held responsible.

Teen hiker lost for days in California wilderness says he thought he would die

One of two Southern California teens lost for several days in a rugged mountain wilderness was released Sunday from a hospital after being treated for dehydration and minor injuries, and recounted his struggles with fear and hallucinations before his eventual rescue.

Nicolas Cendoya told reporters at a brief news conference outside Orange County‘s Mission Hospital that he knew from the first night he and classmate Kyndall Jack got lost during what was supposed to be a short Easter day hike that death was a strong possibility.

As the night grew dark in the Cleveland National Forest on March 31 and the pair called 911 on a dying cell phone, Cendoya said he told Jack “If we don’t get out of here, we’re going to die.”

But Cendoya said he never gave up hope that he would be rescued, and as he wandered in chest-high brush reflected on what he considered recent selfish behaviors, like focusing too much on himself and not enough on his family.

“I didn’t cry. I didn’t fear it. I just embraced everything. I said `This is what I deserve,”‘ Cendoya said. “I just knew I would get through it. I knew this wasn’t my time to die. I knew that I needed this, to become the person that I’m supposed to be.”

As the days passed without food or water, Cendoya grew so weak he said he began having “lucid dreams, lucid hallucinations, every single day.”

He said he felt the presence of God and of his best friend who died last year. He began struggling to tell the difference between sleep and waking, and eventually between life and death.

“I honestly felt that I was in the afterlife,” Cendoya said.

He was airlifted to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

Jack was discovered Thursday clinging to a rocky outcropping no bigger than a yoga mat on a near-vertical slope. She was being treated at University of California, Irvine Medical Center for dehydration and hypothermia.

The two got lost after wandering off Holy Jim Trail, a popular path in the Cleveland National Forest, where the dangers of 720 square miles of rugged mountain wilderness run up against the planned communities and shopping malls of suburban southeast Orange County.

Church members pray for pastor after son's suicide

Members of Rick Warren‘s Southern California church began Sunday services with a prayer for the popular evangelical pastor, as he and his family coped with the apparent suicide of his 27-year-old son.

Tom Holladay, teaching pastor at Saddleback Church in Orange County, opened the 9 a.m. worship service by saying the congregation would face the tragedy together, “as a church family.”

Holladay led a prayer for Warren and his wife, Kay, and their two other children.

The lead pastor was not in attendance Sunday, the day after the church announced that Matthew Warren took his own life at his Mission Viejo home.

The church said the younger Warren struggled with mental illness, deep depression and suicidal thoughts throughout his life.

He was the youngest Rick Warren‘s three children.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP‘s earlier story is below.

Popular evangelical Pastor Rick Warren asked members of his Southern California church for prayers as he and his family coped with the apparent suicide of his 27-year-old son.

The church said on Saturday that Matthew Warren took his own life at his Mission Viejo home.

Matthew Warren struggled with mental illness, deep depression and suicidal thoughts throughout his life, Saddleback Valley Community Church said in a statement, after his body was found Friday night.

“Despite the best health care available, this was an illness that was never fully controlled and the emotional pain resulted in his decision to take his life,” the church said.

Allison O’Neal, a supervising deputy coroner for Orange County, declined to release the cause and manner of death pending an autopsy of the young man.

Rick Warren, the author of the multimillion-selling book “The Purpose Driven Life,” said in an email to church staff that he and his wife had enjoyed a fun Friday evening with their son. But their son then returned home to take his life in “a momentary wave of despair.”

Over the years, Matthew Warren had been treated …read more

Warrant had been issued for teen in Nevada crash

Records show an arrest warrant was issued a week after a teen escaped from a juvenile facility — a disclosure that sheds some light on concerns that he might have slipped through the cracks before his arrest in a Nevada drunken driving crash that killed five family members.

The warrant for Jean Ervin Soriano, 18, was issued on March 8 by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/Z6B2My ) reported Friday, citing department records.

Before his escape, Soriano was being held at the Youth Guidance Center in Santa Ana, Calif., an 80-bed, unguarded facility for low-level offenders operated by the Orange County Probation Department.

It was unclear whether authorities had been searching for Soriano before the Saturday collision on a freeway outside of Las Vegas, and why it took a week to have the warrant issued.

Gail Krause, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman, said Thursday the agency hadn’t been asked to help look for Soriano. A phone message left for her Friday by The Associated Press was not immediately returned.

Todd Spitzer, a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, has sent a list of questions to probation officials to find out how Soriano’s case was handled. He wants to know what attempts were made to find him after the escape and the protocol when such situations occur.

Ed Harrison, a spokesman for the Probation Department, declined to comment about why Soriano was at the Orange County juvenile facility or how he escaped.

Authorities say Soriano was arrested after the SUV he was driving rear-ended the van. Soriano told the arresting trooper he had “too many” beers before the crash, according to an arrest report.

Several beer bottles were found in the SUV, authorities said. Results of a blood-alcohol test were pending.

The van was carrying family members who had been visiting a sick relative in Denver. They were headed home to Southern California to prepare for an Easter celebration.

Three brothers, one of their wives and a girl were killed. Two other people were injured and hospitalized.

Soriano, who had only scrapes and bruises, was being held on $3.5 million bail and …read more

Doctor to plead guilty in Calif. prescription case

A Southern California doctor has agreed to plead guilty to charges of illegally prescribing drugs to his patients at nightly meetings in Starbucks stores.

Court documents show 44-year-old Alvin Mingczech Yee entered into a plea agreement earlier this week. He is expected to plead guilty to seven counts at an April 17 hearing.

Prosecutors say Yee saw up to a dozen patients nightly at Starbucks coffee stores across suburban Orange County at meetings that cost up to $600. Prosecutors say Yee barely examined them but prescribed drugs including OxyContin and Vicodin.

Yee was arrested in October 2011 at his Irvine office and has been free on bond.

The agreement recommends a prison sentence between eight and 10 years.

The Pan American Bank Path to Citizenship Program is comprised of a Citizenship Application Microloan, free checking or savings account, and financial literacy education.

“For a great number of legal permanent residents the only obstacle between them and United States citizenship is the application fee. Across the country there are over eight million legal permanent residents that are currently eligible for citizenship,” said Pan American Bank CEO Jesse Torres. “Citizenship provides legal permanent residents with many benefits, including the ability to vote, run for office, and apply for certain jobs. In addition, citizenship deepens these individuals’ commitment to our country and their community, increasing the level of community service and improving the country’s overall standard of living.”

Pan American Bank offers a $1,000 Citizenship Application Microloan. Search crews recount dramatic Calif. hiker rescue

At first, the rescuers couldn’t believe their ears: After four days of grueling searching, they suddenly heard a faint female voice calling for help.

Over the next 90 agonizing minutes, the cries for help — and first faint, and then louder — led the search and rescue crew across a canyon, into a drainage and up several waterfalls to a near-vertical slope where lost hiker Kyndall Jack was clinging to rocky outcropping no bigger than a yoga mat.

The 18-year-old, who had been missing in Southern California‘s Cleveland National Forest since Sunday, had no shoes, was having trouble breathing and was severely disoriented from dehydration when she was found Thursday. The first thing she asked was what year it was, said Los Angeles County Reserve Deputy Fred Wenzel, who reached her first. Then, she asked for her mother.

“She was filthy from head to toe, her lips were black with dirt, her eyes were barely open and she had on no shoes,” said sheriff’s Deputy Jim Moss, a paramedic who was dropped to her by helicopter and airlifted her to safety in a harness. “She was just kind of clinging to the ledge on the cliff side, going in and out of consciousness.”

Her rescuers were afraid to give her water, despite her extreme dehydration, because she had so much dirt in her mouth she could choke, Wenzel said.

“She was limp and almost lifeless. I was just holding her as the crew chief brought us up and just holding onto her, bringing her in,” Moss said of the airlift.

“She wouldn’t have made it much longer. She’s really lucky.”

Jack’s dramatic rescue brings a happy end to a saga that gripped Southern California since Easter, when Jack and her friend, 19-year-old Nicolas Cendoya, called 911 to report that they were lost and out of water after wandering off the trail during what they expected would be an easy day hike on the Holy Jim Trail.

The popular trail is in the Cleveland National Forest, where the dangers of 720 miles of rugged mountain wilderness run smack up against the planned communities and shopping malls of suburban southeast Orange County. Jack and Cendoya, who was rescued late Wednesday after being spotted by hikers, parked their car off a dirt road just a few miles from an upscale neighborhood where on Thursday children bounced …read more

Teen in Nevada crash that killed 5 was fugitive

An 18-year-old man facing drunken driving charges in a Nevada interstate crash that killed five members of a Southern California family was a fugitive from a California juvenile facility at the time of the accident.

Todd Spitzer, an Orange County supervisor, wants an investigation to determine whether any efforts were made to locate Jean Ervin Soriano after he escaped from the county facility. Spitzer says the Board of Supervisors only learned about Soriano’s fugitive status this week, though the escape occurred March 1.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department says it isn’t aware if it assisted in searching for Soriano. The county probation department, which oversees the facility, declines to comment.

Soriano was arrested Saturday after the SUV he was driving rear-ended a van on a freeway outside Las Vegas.
