Health Net Working to Reduce High Rates of Diabetes among Hispanics

April Is National Minority Health Month

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)– April is National Minority Health Month, and Health Net, Inc. (NYS: HNT) is working to reduce the increasing incidence of diabetes among Hispanics.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Minority Health – which sponsors National Minority Health Month – in the United States, Hispanics are almost twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to be diagnosed with diabetes. It also reports that in the United States, Hispanics have higher rates of end-stage renal disease caused by diabetes, and are 50 percent more likely to die from diabetes than non-Hispanic whites.

In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that in the United States, Hispanic women and men both have greater risks of developing diabetes in their lifetimes, compared to non-Hispanic whites. The CDC also notes that Hispanic Americans are at particularly high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and that diabetes is the fifth-leading cause of death among that group.

“Clearly, there is a health disparity in relation to Hispanics and diabetes, and Health Net is committed to narrowing this gap,” says Jonathan Scheff, M.D., chief medical officer for Health Net, Inc. “We’ve created several programs designed to help our Hispanic members – as well as the Hispanic community in general – reduce their risks of developing diabetes.”

For example, Health Net uses its Promotores Health Network, consisting of more than 100 Spanish-speaking community members who distribute health-education information, to educate the public about diabetes prevention. Additionally:

  • Health Net holds “Know Your Numbers” events, which help increase awareness of chronic-disease prevention;
  • Health Net developed a “Diabetes and Latino Cultures” pocket guide for health-care providers;
  • Health Net hosts monthly diabetes-education classes at its Community Solutions Centers;
  • Health Net distributes a cookbook providing healthier versions of traditional Latino dishes; and
  • Health Net offers the Fit Families for Life program, promoting healthier lifestyles through better nutrition and more physical activity.

The Insurance Industry Shows Obamacare Who's Boss

By Sean Williams, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known loosely as Obamacare, was passed in 2010 to completely reform our current health-care system. The majority of those reforms were targeted at minimizing the rising costs of health care, requiring insurance companies to accept patients with pre-existing conditions, and protecting our hospitals and citizens by giving them access to broader forms of health coverage.

Part of those reforms — as we found out in February through a statement released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS — included what was expected to a mid-single-digit drop in reimbursements for insurers who provided Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Advantage plans are more expensive than traditional Medicare plans, but they offer significantly better coverage — including vision care — and often allow for lower out-of-pocket costs, making them the perfect solution for more than 13 million seniors around the country.

There was serious concern from the get-go for insurers like Humana , Universal American , UnitedHealth Group and Health Net  — which generate 63.5%, 75%, 25%, and 25%, respectively, of their revenue from Medicare Advantage plans. These insurers made it clear that if these rates were to continue into 2014 they would simply reduce the amount of benefits offered and shrink the overall scope of the provider network.

The idea of higher premiums and fewer benefits didn’t sit too well with Congressional lawmakers, insurers, or insurance advocacy groups, which took to aggressive lobbying since the decision was announced in February. Last night, that lobbying turned out to be wholly worthwhile.

As a warning shot aimed directly across the bow of Obamacare, the insurers operating in the Medicare Advantage industry were informed by the CMS on Monday that it had decided to reverse its original recommendation of a 2.3% reimbursement cut in 2013 in favor of a 3.3% increase in the rate of reimbursement!

The reversal decision came about after the assumption was made that Congress would keep payment rates to doctors from falling next year, which is in contrast to the reduction in pay rate that had been factored into the February assessment. It also acts against the premise of the PPACA, which is to wean private insurers from relying on government aid for certain health care plans, including Medicare Advantage.

The bigger story here appears to be the kick in the shin that Obamacare just took at the hands of the insurance industry. By exerting its lobbying power — hinting at the possibility of reducing benefits for 13 million-plus seniors in 2014 — and getting some 160 lawmakers to write letters to persuade the CMS to change its opinion, the insurance industry effectively dictated itself a raise.

From an investment standpoint, insurers like Humana and Universal American — which have significantly more revenue and profit exposure to Medicare Advantage than anything else in the product portfolio — should benefit the most. UnitedHealth Group and Health Net should benefit as well, although their …read more

Health Net Statement on State and Federal Agencies Signing Memorandum of Understanding for California’s Duals Demonstration Program

From Jay Gellert, president and CEO of Health Net, Inc.

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) moved one step closer to implementing the duals demonstration portion of California’s Coordinated Care Initiative, known as Cal MediConnect, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that establishes the framework of the program. The three-year health care coverage program, which is available to beneficiaries who are fully eligible for both the Medicare and Medi-Cal programs (dual eligibles), is scheduled to begin no earlier than October 2013, based on the DHCS‘ current timetable. These federal and state government agencies designed the demonstration to help improve care coordination and health outcomes for the state’s dual eligibles.

The following statement is from Jay Gellert, president and chief executive officer of Health Net, Inc. (NYS: HNT) :

Health Net commends CMS and DHCS for taking a step forward to help provide more integrated care for those who are fully eligible for both the Medicare and Medi-Cal programs and have historically been challenged by what can be a fragmented and confusing care system.

Health Net has long served both Medicare and Medi-Cal beneficiaries in California, and we are pleased to have been selected to participate in the duals demonstration in Los Angeles and San Diego counties.

“We look forward to working to provide dual eligibles with a patient-centered, readily accessible, coordinated and culturally sensitive system that helps improve the quality of their health care.

“In the coming weeks, Health Net will be working with CMS and DHCS to demonstrate our readiness to commence the program.”

Why These 3 Dow Stocks Are Winning Today

By Dan Dzombak, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down after Cyprus secured a bailout over the weekend by agreeing downsize the country’s financial sector and penalize depositors with more than 100,000 euros in their accounts. As of 1:20 p.m. EDT, the Dow is down 108 points, or 0.74%, to 14,404. The S&P 500 is down 0.6% to 1,548.

There were no U.S. economic releases today. Early this morning Cyprus agreed to a deal with the European Central Bank, the European Commission, and the International Monetary Fund wherein the three institutions would would give Cyprus a $10 billion euro bailout. In return, Cyprus agreed to restructure the country’s two largest banks and downsize the financial sector to a level in line with the EU average. The banks’ equity holders, bondholders, and bank accounts holding more than $100,000 euros will all take large hits. Deposits in Cypriot banks are insured to 100,000 euros, so bank accounts with less than 100,000 euros will not be hit.

Now investors are worrying about a spread of fear across the EU banking markets as people with large accounts in weak banks realize they could lose a significant amount of money if their banks ever went bankrupt. For more on the situation in Cyprus, Fool contributor John Maxfield took a look at “Why Cyprus Matters.”

Today’s Dow leaders
Today’s Dow leader is UnitedHealth , up 0.7%. This morning Arizona’s Medicaid system announced that it would award acute-care contracts to UnitedHealth and Health Net. The big loser in this was Vanguard Health Systems, whose stock is down 7% on the news. The Arizona contract accounted for 13% of Vanguard Health‘s revenue. While not a massive mover for UnitedHealth, the Arizona win strengthens the company’s position in Arizona and generally shows the strength of the company’s operations and offerings.

Second on the Dow today is Cisco , up 0.6%. This morning Cisco announced it would acquire Austria-based SolveDirect, a provider of cloud-delivered services management. While the terms of the deal were not announced, Cisco is a serial acquirer, and this fits in with Cisco’s strategy of pursuing multiple small acquisitions to keep the company at the forefront of the IT world.

Once a highflying tech darling, Cisco is now on the radar of value-oriented dividend-lovers. Get the low down on the routing juggernaut in The Motley Fool’s premium report. Click here now to get started.

Health Net Urges Parents to Start Children’s Healthy Eating Habits While They’re Young

March is National Nutrition Month ®

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)– March is National Nutrition Month®, and Health Net, Inc. (NYS: HNT) is seeking to increase awareness – particularly among parents – regarding the importance of providing children with nutrient-rich foods and beverages.

“Nutrients – including protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals – are high on the list of the building blocks for proper growth,” says Jonathan Scheff, M.D., chief medical officer for Health Net, Inc. “Because children’s bodies and minds are still developing, it’s especially critical that they consistently consume high-quality nutrients. That way they’ll have less room for – and may be less tempted by – nutrient-poor choices such as candy and soda. Plus, if children start out on a healthy path early in life, they’re more likely to become nutrition-conscious adults.”

It was with this goal in mind, Scheff noted, that Health Net created its Healthy Kids program, through which parents can access tools and resources to help family members embrace healthy-eating habits and regular exercise.

Health Net members also can enroll in a Healthy Living program that includes personalized meal plans, healthy recipes and strategies to make smart choices when dining out.

Another program, Fit Families for Life, is for Health Net Medi-Cal members and offers home-based and telephonic coaching programs, a workbook, cookbook and a DVD featuring a host of nutrition tips along with low-impact exercises.

Nutrient-Smart Tips

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics – which has sponsored National Nutrition Month for 40 years – offers the following practical tips to add nutrient-rich foods and beverages to your daily diet:

  • Make creamier oatmeal by adding fat-free milk instead of water. For added nutrients, mix in raisins, dried cranberries, cherries or blueberries.
  • Prepare sandwiches on whole-grain bread, such as whole wheat or whole rye. To the lean lunch meat of your choice, add slices of avocado, tomato or cucumber.
  • Opt for whole-wheat macaroni and cheese, as this is a great way to enjoy a whole-grain food with a …read more
