System information and hardware monitor. Monitors CPU, memory, HDD, network traffic, and much more.

This Addon’s use the /etc/os-realese files to show you your Distribution.

Its works only with KDE 4, nVidia GPU’s, AM2+/AM3(+) CPU’s and was Optimized for Athlon II X2/X3/X4, Phenom II X2/X3/X4/X6 and Single Core NVidia based Grafikcards.

Tested with Asus M5A88-V EVO, Phenom II X4 960T, openSuSE 12.1, sensors version 3.3.1 with libsensors version 3.3.1 and MB Sensor atk0110

Other Versions for the Bulldozer Series will follow soon.

The “Themes” should actually be displayed the CPU Modelname.
Although the preview is on AMD Processor Model Unknown, that’s my CPU name. This is an AMD 960T drilled on X6, so “AMD Processor Model Unknown”.

Dd (raw) image of SCO 5.0.6 mount as second hdd

Hi all
I have read about mounting crashed HDD from a sco system in this forum. However this I received an image on raw format of the crashed system that was using an IDE HDD. Which method should I mount my image? IDE scsi or USB? The image is stores in an external connected through USB .

Also the tried to mount using red hat and the error told me the image file system is sysV GnU. Is this normal? I have never come across this file system type in my reading about sco.

Appreciate if you can give me tips to proceed my attempts to mount on a new sco machine. My goal is to read the data on the image of crashes sco system.

Rafał Cieślak: e4rat – decreasing bootup time on HDD drives

This time I will describe how to set up e4rat in order to speed your Ubuntu’s boot time. Let’s begin with some motivation: my netbook used to boot-up in ~40 seconds. Using e4rat, it takes ~10-15 seconds. Impressive, isn’t it? Let’s see how does this trick work, and I’ll teach you how to enable it on your machine.


Prerequisites

Note: e4rat will work only on HDD drives. If you installed your system on a SSD drive, it won’t make any chance. (I will explain this later on, but you may be already uninterested in this article). In case of SSD drives, ureadahead, which is installed with Ubuntu by default, already does it’s best to improve the boot time. Physical HDD drives however, can benefit a lot from e4rat.

Note 2: You need to have your system installed on a ext4 partition in order to use e4rat (which is default in most cases). Furthermore, a kernel not older than 2.6.31 is required. No worries – Ubuntu ships with a suitable kernel since 10.04! Also, e4rat is confirmed to work great with all Ubuntu releases since 11.04 Natty Narwhal.

How does it work?

First, let’s think why does your machine take so much time to boot up. Investigating the boot process, one can learn that if you use a physical HDD drive, most time during startup is spent waiting for your drive to access data (if you wish to investigate it on your own, bootchart is the utility that will help you). This makes a lot of sense, it needs to accelerate the plates, spin them as needed, move other mechanical parts to read information… Because there is lots of physical movement related, the time needed to read a file gets longer. And there can be thousands of files that are required on boot! Things are even worse: if the files are located throughout the whole disk space, much much more seeking for files has to be done (This also explains why the drive can be very noisy on startup!). Luckily, there is no (or almost none) file fragmentation on ext4 filesystems, so at least once the file is found, reading it requires not that much mechanisms movement. But “moving to files” is enough to make your boot take a long time.

First observation that has to be done, is that every time you bootup your system almost the same files are required. This is kind of intuitive, starting Ubuntu on the same machine should require similar stuff every time. What if we could found out what these files are, and somehow move them on the drive close to each other, so that accessing them requires less there-and-back drive movement? Yeah… so this is basically what e4rat does for you.

First, we’ll let e4rat inspect your boot-up, so that it can learn which files are needed to start your system. Then, we’ll use it’s file reallocation tool to move these files in a pattern as optimal as possible. Seagate Goes Hybrid

The long-term prospects of hard disk drive titans Seagate and Western Digital have not looked good. In a recent article, I argued the logic of being bullish on this industry if personal computers are indeed beginning to die. It stands to reason that HDD manufacturers such as Seagate should perish as well. But Seagate has other ideas.

Can hybrids improve the economics of storage?
The company has introduced its third-generation SSHD, or solid state hybrid drives: the Seagate Laptop SSHD, 7 mm-high Seagate Laptop Thin SSHD, and the Seagate Desktop SSHD. I think this is a smart move by Seagate, especially since Apple recently announced its Fusion Drive, which is said to boot much faster while offering better read/write performance.

Scott Horn, Seagate’s vice president of marketing, describes them this way:

Our new SSHDs serve up your favorite content with the lightning-fast performance you have to experience to believe. With these new drives it’s like adding a turbo-charge to your PC, without having to sacrifice capacity, at a price that’s easy on your wallet. Now consumers can create, store and consume digital content like a pro without having to spend like one.

Even though Apple has not used the term “hybrid” to describe Fusion, the word is being used by writers and analysts in their descriptions. So if Seagate and Western Digital, which began shipping its own hybrids in January, are moving into the SSHD platform to support new industry standards from (among others) Apple, then it’s good idea. But how well will this work? More specifically, can hybrids change the economics of the desktop storage business?

That’s the question investors must first answer, which was the thesis of my previous sell recommendation. While Seagate has been able to fight the increased adoption of solid state drives, or SSDs, the company now understands that it can’t fight the rise of mobile devices infinitely. Essentially, evolve or die. But these hybrids look more like a “gap-closing” solution than anything “game-changing.” And Horn’s description of “adding a turbo-charge to your PC” sounds familiar.

Yes, yes, very impressive, but…
While the features boast tons of speed and performance, there’s a part of me than thinks… so what! As groundbreaking as these new SSHD drives might be, they are still just internal components of an industry that’s in decay. But Seagate is not the first to attempt “the next big thing in PC.” It’s a good idea, but investors have to prepare for a possible thud if expectations become too unrealistic.

There’s still a bigger issue at hand. Intel has not been able to excite consumers with new/faster PC chips. Even though they have consistently improved over the years, the company has still posted year-over-year declines in chip revenue the past three quarters. Likewise, even though Microsoft‘s new Windows 8 operating system was a step in the right direction, the adoption among consumers have been far below the company’s expectations.

Seagate to halt production of 7200-rpm laptop hard drives

When it comes time to buy your next high-performance laptop, chances are good that it will feature a solid state drive (SSD). But what if you’d prefer to have a high-speed, high-capacity traditional hard drive instead? Don’t look to Seagate, one of the two 800-pound gorillas in the hard drive industry. The company recently said it will stop making 2.5-inch, 7200-rpm laptop hard drives by the end of 2013.

“High performance in the notebook segment in the future will come from solid-state hybrid drives (SSHDs) rather than drives with higher spin speeds,” a Seagate spokesperson told PCWorld. Seagate’s comment certainly implies that 7200-rpm notebook drives are on their way out, but the spokesperson stopped just short of confirmation. Both X-bit Labs and AnandTech say Seagate has confirmed it will stop producing 2.5-inch 7200-rpm HDDs. Seagate’s high-performance, notebook-sized hard drives will still be around for some time, however, as the company winds down production and works through its remaining stock.

Seagate does not currently offer a consumer SSD, but those drives are coming. The company signed an agreement with DensBits in 2012 to co-develop both consumer- and enterprise-focused solid state drives.

HDD, the long farewell

As SSD prices have dropped over the past few years, the need for 7200-rpm notebook-sized drives has lessened. When PCWorld reviewed Seagate’s second-generation Momentus XT hybrid drive nearly three years ago, an OCZ 120GB SSD was priced at $400 and the 256GB model was $750. A quick check on Amazon Monday morning shows you can get a 256GB OCZ SSD for $250, less than half what it cost in 2010.

Raphaël Hertzog: My Free Software Activities in February 2013

This is my monthly summary of my free software related activities. If you’re among the people who made a donation to support my work (78.31 €, thanks everybody!), then you can learn how I spent your money. Otherwise it’s just an interesting status update on my various projects.

Debian packaging

I wanted to update publican to the latest upstream release but I stopped after a few hours of work during which I filed two bugs that a modicum of testing should have caught before release. So I decided to wait for the next minor release.

I uploaded python-django 1.4.4 and 1.4.5, new upstream maintenance and security releases which thus went into wheezy. I also prepared a stable update of Django (1.2.3-3+squeeze5) which required me to backport the last 2 sets of security patches.

I uploaded a new revision of wordpress to fix a problem with TinyMCE (#700289) and to update/add many translation files (#697208).

Bug reporting and misc fixes

Live-build issue. I experienced some intermittent failures when building HDD live images with live-build on armel. Daniel Baumann directed me to the problematic piece of code (the “oversizing” of the image size was not enough) so I committed a small fix by increasing the oversizing factor to 6%.

Live-config issue. I also reported another issue that I diagnosed in live-config (#701788), namely that the script which setups sudo was failing when the default user is root.

git-buildpackage issue. I filed #700411 after noticing that git-import-orig imported the debian directory provided by upstream. Those directories are not used with “3.0 (quilt)” source package and their presence in the upstream branch is thus harmful: any change to the upstream debian directory will result in conflicts when you merge a new upstream release in your packaging branch.

rubygems integration. Later I had to package a bunch of ruby applications that were using Bundler and I wanted to reuse as many packaged ruby modules that I could. But for this, those modules had to provide the required rubygems meta-information. I filed #700419 to request those on rake-compiler and with the help of Cédric Boutillier (and others on #debian-ruby), we identified a bunch of ruby modules which could get those with a simple recompilation. I filed bin-nmu requests in #700605.

Misc bugs. simple-cdd offers to select profiles to install but I noticed that the associated debconf template was not translated (#700915). The startup scripts (provided by initscripts) in charge of activating the swap are supposed to handle a “noswap” kernel command line option to disable swap. In #701301, I reported that the option was not working correctly if “quiet” was present first in the command line due to spurious “break” statements.

Debian France

Administrative work. We were late for some legal procedures so I wrote the report of the last general assembly and sent it to the “Tribunal d’instance of Sarreguemines” to record the changes in the administrative board. [solved] Sun Netra X1 – Adding a Second Hard Drive

As the title suggests, I’m trying to install a second drive (really want an OS mirror) on a Sun Netra X1.

I’ve taken the spacer out, and had a go at with the drill-press so now I have a nice HDD tray. Have installed an IDE drive in the tray, plugged in the power and data cables that were dangling handily in the right spots already and powered up.

No sign I’d done a thing, one drive only still, working as before, no indication of a new drive.

Exploring the device tree at the OK> prompt shows one PCI directory, one harddrive in it. No cdrom or other indicators that it’s seeing a thing.

A boot -r changes nothing

From the OS, “disks” does nothing, “devfsadm” does nothing (also tried with -C out of superstition).
dmesg shows no errors, and no indication there’s anything plugged in.

I was careful of metal shavings, shorts, physical damage etc so I don’t think I borked anything while making my hardware modifications.

Drive jumpers are default (ie master/primary)

Have I forgotten something obvious here?

Ok, this was just a silly-me thing.
Took it all apart again, and noticed in better light that the power molex was just a little crooked, gave it a wiggle and it snapped home. Suddenly everything works :rolleyes:

For anyone else wanting to try this, it’s actually as simple as you’d hope. Just plug (properly) and go.

To do my modification on the drive slide spacer (to buy a proper one costs $$$), just drill out the four rivets holding the centre bar in place, taking care not to drill the metal frame at all. You might need to lever the frame open slightly against the bar to pop off the rivet head. I had to, but I was working with a limited range of drillbits and one size up was too big.

The holes that the rivets were in happen to line up just nicely with the mounting screw holes on modern standard 3.5″ IDE harddrives. One each side and everything sits pretty well.

Once done, a devfsadm got it to show up in format, assign partition table and enjoy.

Seagate, Virident and the Role of NVM Programming

By Tom Coughlin, Contributor This week the Storage Networking Industry Association had its Winter Symposium.  The SNIA Solid State Storage Initiative is working on workload testing and identifying what applications and use cases can most benefit from solid state storage.  In addition, a recent effort is under way to make use of the many PCIe-based interfaces that are developing as a consequence of the high speed data transfers that are possible using flash memory and future non-volatile memory devices.  The use of these interfaces is spreading in enterprise (primarily data center) applications as highlighted by the recent announcement of a $40 M investment by Seagate Technology in Virident Systems and plans to introduce Seagate labeled PCIe solid state storage devices. The SNIA SSSI has a workload logging program that it is offering to end users to download and share anonymous computer workload information with the SSSI.  Readers can join this effort by following instructions at:  www.snia.org/forums/sssi/wiocp.  At the SSSI meeting Coughlin Associates and Objective Analysis presented data from their survey and associated report on How Many IOPS do you really need.  We have discussed this ongoing survey in earlier Forbes articles.  The survey is still ongoing and readers can participate in the brief survey at:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KGKVR6X. The ongoing updated report on “How Many IOPS Do You Really Need” will include data from the workload data set as it develops. The SNIA NVM programming group was formed in the last few months of 2012 and had a special session on their work and plans during the 2013 Storage Visions Conference.  There was an all day program on their plans to develop open source programming tools and general standards to make use of the high speed, low latency and other special characteristics of current and future generations of non-volatile solid state storage.  Industry leaders presented their view, plans and dreams for this effort that was discussed in greater depth during SNIA NVM programming committee meetings on the remaining days of the SNIA Winter Symposium. Seagate Technology made a significant investment in Virident Systems in order to develop a branded presence in the PCIe storage device system market.  The company will relabel and sell Virident PCIe solid state storage devices and is using its investment and board seat with the company to leverage work to develop the next generation of PCIe and SOP storage solutions including hardware as well as software components.  Seagate Technology is a leader in HDD enterprise storage solutions and it makes a lot of sense for them to leverage their HDD and SAS SSD storage offerings with developing PCIe products. Flash memory and emerging technology non-volatile memory solutions are remaking the face of enterprise storage.  These enterprise storage solutions support the growth of cloud storage and remote applications that are an important key to success of smart mobile devices.  The development of new technology solutions, channels and open standards to support operating system and other programing that takes advantage of the use of solid state storage for traditional storage as well as non-volatile memory will change the face of our technical culture for many years to come.

Istallation Of PCLinuxOS 2009 Onto A HDD-less Machine…

I have no idea if this has been done before but I have an Acer Aspire One – NG5, 512MB RAM, netbook where the SSD failed and is now FIXED DISKLESS and unable to boot until now… ;o)
It ran PCLinuxOS 2009 as its OS until the SDD failure…

The method is a little long winded and does require a Windows Vista machine with a CD/DVD drive fitted…

It requires a CD/DVD bootable Live PCLinuxOS 2009 disk in this particular case to work…

This method could be used for other Linux based OSes where the installation will be onto a diskless machine…


How to create a fully bootable USB drive from a PCLinuxOS 2009 live system onto an SSD-less or HDD-less Acer Aspire One "ZG5" netbook...

This is a little long winded but after many attempts this was the only reliable way to do this...
You will need another machine to help, Windows Vista with an optical drive as a minimum.
Also at least a 16GB USB stick for to OS proper. This is a practical minimum...
(My Acer Aspire One "ZG5" has no SSD or HDD installed but now runs from a 16GB USB stick autorunning into E-UAE.)

Preparation:-

1) Using the Windows machine boot into WIndows Vista or 7, (I have no idea about Windows 8 whether all this will work).
2) Put one of the live CD/DVD PCLinuxOS 2009 into the relevant drive and allow it to be read.
3) Now shut and power down the Windows machine in the normal way.
4) Reboot and select the drive that the live system is connected to and start PCLinuxOS 2009 live.
5) Now put 16GB USB stick into a USB slot and partition this stick into two parts, the first 1GB part as Windows and the other as unused.
Click on PCLinux Control Center (Icon) > Local disks > Manage disk partitions. Follow the instructions...
6) Once done, safely remove this 16GB USB stick. DO NOT FORMAT!
7) Power down the Live PCLinuxOS 2009 in the normal way and remove the Live PCLinuxOS 2009 disk.
8) Reboot into Windows again.
9) Connect the 16GB USB stick and format the 1GB partition as FAT32 and give it a name of your choice. This is all that will be seen by Windows.
10) When done, safely remove this 16GB USB stick.
11) Put one of the live CD/DVD PCLinuxOS 2009 into the relevant drive and allow it to be read again.
12) Now shut and power down the Windows machine in the normal way again.
13) Reboot and select the drive that the live system is connected to and start PCLinuxOS 2009 live a second time.
14) Once everything has settled create a live 1GB USB system... Click on PC > System > Make LiveUSB.
15) Follow the instructions and once finished remove the 16GB LiveUSB safely.
16) Power down the Live PCLinuxOS 2009 in the normal way and remove the Live PCLinuxOS 2009 disk.

Installation onto a diskless AA1:-

17) Using the diskless AA1, now for the install proper.
18) Put the 16GB USB stick into the top/rear right hand USB slot.
19) Boot into a live PCLinuxOS 2009 desktop in the usual way.
20) Select the installation icon and follow the instructions.
21) Ensure that you install to the 14+GB free_space/empty_partition ONLY.
22) Once installed shut and power down the Live USB version and......
23) ......reboot. You should now have a fully bootable PCLinuxOS 2009 running from USB on a FIXED DISKLESS AA1.
24) Set up you new install in the normal way and......
25) ......good luck... ;o)

NOTE:- This particular install will only work on the particular DISKLESS machine you install it to!

Last but not least, I have no idea of the lifespan of current USB sticks, but hey, it is cheaper than an SSD and fun to do too...
