Samsung reveals high-speed 1TB SSDs for consumers, enterprise

Samsung Electronics will offer a range of faster SSD drives for consumers from next month, including a zippy new 1TB drive meant for everyday use.

The company’s “840 EVO lineup” will be two to three times faster than its existing 840 drives, depending on the capacity, it said Thursday. The 1TB version has a sequential write speed of 520MBps, over double its predecessor, while the 120GB model can reach up to 410MBps, about triple the older version.

As NAND flash prices fall and adoption of SSDs spreads in consumer computers and laptops, terabyte-sized SSDs have become the new battleground for manufacturers. Samsung announced its newest drives under the slogan “SSDs for everyone.”

Micron unveiled a 1TB drive, the Crucial M500, for consumers in January at the International CES show in Las Vegas, pricing it under US$600, or 60 cents per gigabyte, far below rivals at the time. The first 1TB SSD, from OCZ, launched in 2011, still sells for over US$2,500 online.

OCZ Picks a CFO

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

San Jose-based OCZ Technology Group is switching CFOs.

On Monday, the maker of solid-state memory drives announced that its chief financial officer of nine years, Arthur Knapp, is retiring and will be replaced by Rafael Torres.

Torres comes to OCZ from Alcatel-Lucent subsidiary Capella Photonics, where he served as CFO up through the switchmaker’s January acquisition by larger Lucent. He also has experience in that position in two other Nasdaq-listed firms, $1.2 billion market-capped Power Integrations and smaller PLX Technology. In each case, OCZ says that Torres helped to engineer turnarounds at businesses that had come upon difficult times — such as those encountered by unprofitable OCZ.

OCZ shares gained 3.9% in Monday trading, closing at $1.85 per share ahead of the news.

Seagate to halt production of 7200-rpm laptop hard drives

When it comes time to buy your next high-performance laptop, chances are good that it will feature a solid state drive (SSD). But what if you’d prefer to have a high-speed, high-capacity traditional hard drive instead? Don’t look to Seagate, one of the two 800-pound gorillas in the hard drive industry. The company recently said it will stop making 2.5-inch, 7200-rpm laptop hard drives by the end of 2013.

“High performance in the notebook segment in the future will come from solid-state hybrid drives (SSHDs) rather than drives with higher spin speeds,” a Seagate spokesperson told PCWorld. Seagate’s comment certainly implies that 7200-rpm notebook drives are on their way out, but the spokesperson stopped just short of confirmation. Both X-bit Labs and AnandTech say Seagate has confirmed it will stop producing 2.5-inch 7200-rpm HDDs. Seagate’s high-performance, notebook-sized hard drives will still be around for some time, however, as the company winds down production and works through its remaining stock.

Seagate does not currently offer a consumer SSD, but those drives are coming. The company signed an agreement with DensBits in 2012 to co-develop both consumer- and enterprise-focused solid state drives.

HDD, the long farewell

As SSD prices have dropped over the past few years, the need for 7200-rpm notebook-sized drives has lessened. When PCWorld reviewed Seagate’s second-generation Momentus XT hybrid drive nearly three years ago, an OCZ 120GB SSD was priced at $400 and the 256GB model was $750. A quick check on Amazon Monday morning shows you can get a 256GB OCZ SSD for $250, less than half what it cost in 2010.
