Atlantic City authorities eye 'more than one' person of interest in 2006 unsolved prostitute murders

While millions of tourists flock each year to the boardwalks and casinos of Atlantic City, a dark question looms over this glittery city: Who murdered four women and dumped their bodies in a drainage ditch on the outskirts of town nearly seven years ago? No arrests have ever been made, but authorities tell FoxNews.com they are quietly and aggressively working the case – contacting police in Florida, Missouri and Alaska in recent months for possible connections to killings there.

2014 Chevy Corvette C7 Stingray Order Guide Goes Public, Options Detailed

By Andrew Wendler

When the 2014 Chevrolet C7 Corvette appeared in the metal composite for the first time at the 2013 Detroit auto show, it entered the room with all the subtlety of a bikini-clad co-ed stumbling into the lunchroom of an all-male prep school. But the initial thrill was slightly tempered by the fact that we didn’t really know many critical details. We published a deep dive with those who created the C7 last month, and now we have more concrete facts and figures thanks to the official 2014 Corvette order guide. The publicly available form was first flouted by a Corvette dealer in Atlantic City, and subsequently publicized by Corvette Blogger.

Chevrolet told C/D today that the order guide for the Stingray coupe (1YY07) in both base and Z51 (1YX07) flavors was officially distributed to dealers yesterday, many of which no doubt have customers already optioning up their own personal C7s. (Fans hoping for the lowdown on the C7 convertible will have to wait.) Corvette Blogger reports that pricing, which is not included in the document, is expected to be announced before the April 25 kick-off of the National Corvette Museum’s annual “Bash” event. Chevrolet would not confirm or deny that timing, commenting only that “pricing will be released soon, but not today.”

Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting details and secrets either exposed or confirmed in the newly released order guide:

  • Trim levels: There will be three: 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT.
  • Competition Sport Bucket Seats (order code AE4): Chevrolet’s vaunted new Competition Sport bucket seats—an available option on all models—are aimed at quelling the age-old complaints regarding the Vette’s disappointing seats. Note that they are listed as late availability. How late? GM doesn’t say.
  • Color Combination Override (order code D30): This appropriately named feature allows buyers to “individualize vehicle appearance by overriding recommended restrictions to exterior, interior and convertible top (if equipped) color combinations.” Interestingly, this option is available only to “sold” orders, which is code for a paid-up-front special order. Taste, it’s been said, is subjective, and now money can buy a lot of subjectivity at Chevrolet dealers.
  • Corvette Museum Delivery (order code RC8): Available for all models, this also includes a personalized Corvette Museum logo plaque.
  • Transparent Roof Panel (order code CC3): Lets the—slightly diffused—sun shine in on either the base car or the Z51.
  • Carbon-Fiber Dual Roof Package (order code C2M): Includes a carbon roof panel and the transparent panel.
  • Dual-Mode Performance Exhaust (order code NPP): Replaces the stock exhaust for an as-yet-undetermined increase in horsepower and a more aggressive sound. Polished stainless exhaust tips grow from three inches to four.
  • Magnetic Selective Ride Control (order code FE4): An available option on Z51 models, it includes the B4Z Performance Traction Management stability-control programming, which is not available as a standalone option.
  • Transmissions: A seven-speed manual

Why Investors Are Gambling on Boyd Gaming Today

By Travis Hoium, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Although we don’t believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes — just in case they’re material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Boyd Gaming jumped 10% today after the company got an analyst upgrade.

So what: Morgan Stanley upgraded shares to overweight today, and gave the stock a $12 price target. The analyst cited the potential for online gaming as the driver of the stock, potentially bringing as much revenue to the industry as Las Vegas and Atlantic City combined.

Now what: Online gaming is slowly being legalized across the U.S., with Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware being the first to allow it. Boyd has a potentially lucrative partnership with bwin.party and MGM Resorts , which could lead to huge profit growth, as I pointed out over a year ago. I wouldn’t buy on this analyst upgrade alone, but the potential for online gaming is too big to ignore. I’ve built some estimates before (which can be seen here) and there’s huge upside for both Boyd Gaming and MGM Resorts, but only if its legalized nationally. Until then, the potential for online gaming is minimal for Boyd.

Opposition to Internet Gambling Lessening in N.J.

By The Associated Press

Mel Evans/AP New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed an online gambling bill into law on Feb. 26, although no casino has yet begun an Internet betting operation.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Opposition to gambling over the Internet is lessening in New Jersey, even though a new poll finds more people against it than for it.

The Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll released Wednesday finds 46 percent of respondents oppose the state’s recent decision to legalize Internet betting, with 41 percent favoring it. That’s down significantly from just two years ago, when 67 percent of respondents to the poll said they were against Internet gambling.

Gov. Chris Christie signed an online gambling bill into law on Feb. 26. It authorizes any game currently offered at an Atlantic City casino to be offered online, although no casino has yet gotten an Internet betting operation up and running.

The law won’t take effect until the state Division of Gaming Enforcement sets a start date, sometime between three and nine months after the law was signed. Casino executives have estimated it could take six months to a year to get the system up and running.

“It’s possible that the growth in support for the practice is a consequence of the legislation’s passage,” said Krista Jenkins, the poll’s director and a professor of political science at Fairleigh Dickinson University. “Voters may be accepting the inevitable, or have acquired new information that brought about a change of heart, given the heightened exposure any new legislation brings with it.”

Two thirds of those who support Internet gambling said additional revenue for the state is the main reason they favor it. Only 10 percent cited the convenience of being able to gamble online.

Those who oppose Internet gambling are clearly worried about potentially harmful effects it could have on society.

A third believe families and children will be hurt by caregivers who engage in compulsive gambling, and half are about evenly divided between those who say online gambling will make it too easy to gamble (26 percent) and those who are opposed to gambling in all forms (24 percent).

Among all respondents to the poll, nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of those who said they visited a casino in the last 12 months did so in Atlantic City, rather than going to Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, or Las Vegas.

The poll also found that most respondents say individual states are better equipped than the federal government to decide if they should be allowed to offer legal sports betting. New Jersey recently lost a federal court battle to overturn a federal law restricting sports betting to four states that met a 1991 deadline to approve it: Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana.

The passenger reports roaches could be seen crawling on seats, windows, side panels and even on people.

An assignment editor at WABC says people could be heard screaming and yelling about roaches in their hair and on their backs while the person was on the phone with the station.

Greyhound says the 48 passengers on board had been moved to the new bus.

The company says the bus the passengers had been riding is being examined to determine the origin of the bugs.

Pokerstar's Bid to Buy Casino Could Signal Gambling Gold Rush

By COLLEEN CURRY

A move by the online gaming giant Pokerstars to buy an Atlantic City casino could signal a gold rush for the gambling industry, according to industry watchers.

Online companies are expected to be scrambling for land and casinos in states like Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware, which recently passed laws allowing online gambling if it is affiliated with in-state casinos. Similar bills have also been introduced in Pennsylvania and Illinois.

Pokerstars, part of the online gambling corporation Rational Group, based in the U.K., struck a deal earlier this year to buy the Atlantic Club, an 800-room hotel and casino on the Atlantic City boardwalk, according to paperwork filed with the state’s division of gaming enforcement.

The move came after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed a law Feb. 26 allowing online gambling for residents as long as the games were hosted by in-state casinos located in Atlantic City.

The company, which was previously indicted by the Department of Justice for offering online gambling to U.S. residents, wants to legally operate its website and the casino, according to its owners. They reportedly paid about $30 million for the casino.

“In a nutshell, the future of gaming will require a mix of online and offline expertise,” Eric Hollreiser, spokesman for Pokerstars, told ABCNews.com in an email. “We are the world’s largest online poker company and one of the largest producers of live poker tournaments in the world, which we produce in many of the world’s best known casinos.”

Hollreiser said that the proposed business model would help drive online gamers into casinos for live tournaments, and remind casino-goers to log on and game at home until their next visit.

“We drive traffic from our online tournaments to our major casino partners around the world. This drives a poker tourism business in cities such as London, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, (and) Rio,” he said. “The traffic runs both ways as we introduce new audiences to poker in these live tournaments.”

Precedent-Setting Decision

Pokerstars is awaiting approval from the Division of Gaming Enforcement and the state’s Casino Control Commission. If it goes through, it could represent the first time a gaming website has transformed into owning and operating a hotel and casino.

The development could send waves through the gaming industry.

“The casino-going population is older. You have this huge bubble of younger people who have never gone to a casino or intend to go to one, but spend half their waking life on smartphones or computers, playing games, social networking. So how does the gaming industry respond?” said Joe Brennan, director of the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association (iMega), who has studied the effects of disruption on the gaming industry.

2 NJ troopers lose jobs over high-speed escort

A New Jersey state trooper has pleaded guilty to altering the license plate on his patrol car to cover up his role in escorting a caravan of sports cars speeding down the Garden State Parkway at more than 100 mph.

A second trooper in the same case is applying for a pretrial intervention program that would keep his record clean.

The state Attorney General’s Office announced Monday that both have forfeited their state police jobs and are barred from working in law enforcement in New Jersey.

Sgt. First Class Nadir Nassry of Phillipsburg pleaded guilty to tampering with records. The state says it’s recommending he receive probation.

Trooper Joseph Ventrella of Bloomingdale is trying to enroll in the pretrial program.

San Diego Ex-Mayor Confronts $1 Billion Gambling Problem

By Breaking News

Maureen OConnor San Diego Ex Mayor Confronts $1 Billion Gambling Problem

LOS ANGELES — A former mayor of San Diego spent the last decade wagering more than a billion dollars at casinos across the country, eventually liquidating her savings, auctioning her belongings, selling off real estate, borrowing from friends and taking more than $2 million from a charity set up by her late husband, a fast-food tycoon.

The former mayor, Maureen O’Connor, 66, blamed an addiction to gambling aggravated by a brain tumor for the gargantuan spree. Her lawyers said that while she had made well over a billion dollars in bets at casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and San Diego, her actual net losses were around $13 million.

Federal prosecutors said it was impossible to know precisely how much Ms. O’Connor had lost over those years, but she emerged with her fortune gone and her health shattered. She took out second and third mortgages on her La Jolla, Calif., home to pay for the gambling.

The former Southern California political power broker, whose husband, Robert O. Peterson, founded the Jack-in-the-Box fast-food chain, appeared in court in San Diego on Thursday to answer to charges that she had stolen money from her late husband’s foundation to fuel her addiction.

She walked unsteadily into court, leaning on a cane and appearing wobbly and distraught. She teared up as she told reporters, “Those of you who know me here would know that I never meant to hurt the city that I love.”
