2014 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Edition 507

Buyers wanting a little more power from a standard Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG now have the all-new Edition 507 to lust after. As its name suggests, this new model features a more powerful 507-horsepower AMG V8, and it also gets plenty of performance and styling upgrades as well. Unlike the Black Series, the 2014 C63 AMG Edition 507 will be offered in both sedan and coupe body styles when it goes on sale this summer; based on the images, it appears that European customers will also be able to enjoy the Edition 507 in extra-tasty wagon flavor.

Mercedes-Benz squeezed more power from the C63’s sublime 6.2-liter V8 with many of the same ideas used in the SLS AMG including forged pistons, new connecting rods and lighter crankshaft, which also help to drop more than six pounds from the engine’s overall weight. Along with the new internal components, the Edition 507 also gets a remapped engine controller helping the mill put out the 507 hp and 450 pound-feet of torque (the standard C63 AMG is rated at 451 hp and 443 lb-ft). This new model also comes standard with upgraded brakes consisting of 14.2-inch, two-piece front rotors to go with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, all painted red.

Adding to the visual aspect of the C63 AMG, the Edition 507 gets stylish five-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels (available in a high-sheen titanium gray or matte black), a vented hood carried over from the Black Series, AMG stripes on the rocker panels and gloss black accents on the grille, rear spoiler and mirrors. Inside, the exclusive package also adds a sport steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara, red accents in the gauge cluster and lots of high-gloss piano black accents throughout the cabin. An “Edition 507” badge is mounted on the passenger side of the instrument panel, and finishes off the unique interior.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Edition 507 will make its debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show, but until then, check out the gallery of images along with the official press release posted below. The price for the car has not been announced, but it will include a a voucher for the owner to attend the AMG Driving Academy.

Quick Spin: 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Coupe

By Michael Harley

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT

Mercedes-Benz upgraded its SLS flagship Coupe and Roadster for the 2013 model year, and the changes are marked with them new “GT” nomenclature. Both SLS models arrive with a retuned naturally aspired 6.2-liter V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque (the horses are up from 563, but the torque remains the same) mated to a revised seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch gearbox. Rounding out the mechanical upgrades is a redeveloped AMG two-mode adaptive suspension. Physically, the revised models are differentiated by their new “GT” badging, darkened headlight/taillight buckets, red brake calipers, unique wheel colors and high gloss finish on the front grille, exterior mirrors and hood/fender fins. Inside the cabin are new red seatbelts, Alcantara upholstery and contrasting red stitching.

As it is nearly impossible to experience the aluminum gullwing beast on public roads, Mercedes invited out to Southern California’s Willow Springs to wring out the 2013 SLS GT Coupe on a racing circuit.

Driving Notes

  • It was impossible to feel the horsepower bump from the driver’s seat (the track’s 2,000-foot elevation negated the increase anyway), but the free-breathing V8 sounds even more spectacular each time I meet it. Gobs of low-end torque, a responsive throttle and a willingness to race to redline (7,200 rpm) make it a near-perfect driver’s companion. The automaker quotes a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds – traction at launch is a problem – with a top speed of 197 miles per hour. The SLS attacked the Streets of Willow with voraciousness. I’ve driven hundreds of laps on the circuit, but never in a vehicle so powerful that I needed to brake hard to make Turn One after rocketing down the straight (running clockwise).
  • After finding myself bumping off the limiter repeatedly while using the wheel-mounted paddles in manual mode (an LED shift light blinks red at the top of the cluster), I put the gearbox in Sport Plus and let computers do the thinking. Overall, I was pleased with its intuitiveness and I really enjoyed the throttle blips on the downshifts.
  • A near complete lack of body roll and very firm AMG Sport suspension (I chose the damper’s softest setting to combat the surface’s broken pavement) meant the rear end would break loose mid-corner if the power was applied abruptly. Smoothness and consistent throttle applications were imperative to keeping the rear end planted and exiting the corner with the nose pointed down the track. Overall balance was impressively neutral and weight distribution, fore and aft, was easily controlled with the accelerator pedal.
  • The 15.4-inch perforated front steel rotors could take plenty of abuse, but I preferred the optional carbon-ceramic brake setup as they felt unaffected by the heat generated on the tight track. As an added benefit, they weigh less and look even better through the forged spokes on the wheels.
  • Driven back-to-back on the track, the updated Coupe and Roadster were nearly identical dynamically (they both weigh 3,573 pounds). From a driver’s perspective, the exhaust note is more pronounced in the Roadster and there was more wiggle room for my helmeted head beneath its soft convertible top. Still, I wouldn’t want to give up those signature gullwing doors.

The Continental: Corporate Collaborations, Designer Yachts, and the Best Off-Roader

By Jens Meiners

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Toyota and BMW collaboration

BMW and Toyota have announced the next steps in their cooperation: Following an exploratory phase, they have come to binding agreements to work on a fuel-cell system, high-energy lithium-air batteries, light-weight technology, and a mid-size sports car. The feasibility study on that sports car will be finished by the end of 2013, and it could lead to a common platform. The project is connected to the light-weight technology effort, which will contribute know-how to the sports car’s development, if it comes to fruition.

We already know about BMW’s contract to supply Toyota with 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engines. BMW can be congratulated on finding a partner that actually means business; previously announced contracts with Saab and Carbon Motors have led to nothing. Toyota is obviously as serious about becoming a maker of sporty cars as BMW is about becoming “green.” Toyota’s new strategy is a welcome change seeing as how memories of the Celica, MR2 and Supra have been buried under an onslaught of hybrids and J.D.Power–inspired family barges.

Nissan Juke NISMO

Meanwhile, Nissan is underscoring its sporty credentials with the launch of its NISMO sub-brand in Europe. The first two dedicated models will be the Juke NISMO and the 370Z NISMO. The Juke receives a body kit, red mirror caps, 225/45 rubber on 18-inch rims, and a mild power and torque boost that raise output from 188 horsepower to 197 and from 177 lb-ft of torque to 184. The cheerful car on steroids comes with either a six-speed manual and front-wheel drive, or a CVT automatic and all-wheel drive. Neither of these two combinations, I regret to say, is particularly pleasant. A more-powerful version with around 220 horsepower is in the works. No details on the 370Z Nismo are available yet.

Fiat and Mazda have finally signed the contract to produce an Alfa Romeo roadster at the Mazda plant in Hiroshima, Japan, beginning in 2015. The rear-wheel-drive two-seater will be a sister model to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and it will fill a gaping void in Alfa Romeo’s lineup. The brand last offered a Spider in 2010. The Alfa Romeo and Mazda versions will have unique engine portfolios, according to the companies’ joint statement.

Meanwhile, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne promises that the mid-engine Alfa Romeo 4C sports car will hit North American turf before the end of the year. I hear it will be an expensive car, rivaling the Porsche Cayman and Boxster, and that its styling language should not be seen as indicative of future Alfa Romeo models. The face of the 4C, like those of the MiTo and the Giulietta, is still inspired by the 8C Competizione. Other future Alfa Romeo models will be more angular and contemporary in style.

Opel Cascada convertible

Some German Cars

Opel has announced pricing for the Astra-based Cascada convertible, which begins at €21,802, before taxes, or $29,350 at current exchange rates. At this price, it comes with a 118-hp gasoline engine, fabric seats, and hubcaps. However, Opel is trying to position the droptop as an Audi A5 cabriolet and Mercedes-Benz E-class competitor, the latter of which costs twice as much as the Cascada. But the Cascada’s true competition is the Peugeot 308 CC, Renault Mégane coupe-cabriolet, and the slightly more compact Volkswagen Golf cabriolet. The Cascada is priced right and should do well in this less-expensive yet competitive field.

Volkswagen T3 kint sweater

Volkswagen shows that you don’t have to take your heritage all that seriously by displaying a T3—known in the U.S. as the Vanagon—fully clad in knitware. A couple of VW commercial vehicle employees spotted a classic bus thus treated while vacationing in Thailand and decided to replicate the application. It turns out that the employees’ female spouses were required to finish the ambitious project. About 2500 hours went into the 100-pound-plus knit sweater for the unique T3, which can be admired in the Volkswagen Museum until the end of March.

The German magazine Auto Bild reports that Audi will launch a Q6 crossover, positioned just above the Q5. Following the recipe of the rakish BMW X6, it will be distinguished by a steeply raked windshield and a low, fastback roofline. The car will be built in Mexico, according to Auto Bild.

Outremer 5X catamaran

Former Renault chief designer Patrick Le Quément, one of my personal design heroes, not only is creating a new design school, but also works as a successful designer of upper-crust yachts. Two of his designs, the Outremer 5X catamaran (pictured above) and the trawler Garcia GT54, were just named European Boats of the Year at the Düsseldorf boat show. Congratulations!

Mercedes-Benz G550

Highway Tested: Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen

Have I ever mentioned I am in love with the Mercedes-Benz G-wagen? It has been a couple of years since I last drove a one, but I recently had the pleasure of spending a week in a G550. Since then, the G received an interior makeover for 2013, which works well. I was surprised at the standard, 5.5-liter V-8′s aggressive tuning and growl—this Benz sounds like an AMG, and it takes off with a vengeance. Although the cabin is lavishly equipped, the G-Wagen does not and cannot hide its roots as a military vehicle engineered in the 1970s.

But it is relatively quiet, comfortable, effortless, and fast. It is a miracle, considering what the original G-wagen handled like (it was bad), and Mercedes has not exactly invested vast funds into updating the vehicle. There are a bunch of dashboard components from the corporate parts bin, and the exterior trim is off-the-shelf fare. But all that is part of the G’s charm. I wonder if Land Rover could pull off a similar job with the Defender, instead of reinventing it at the risk of turning it into a Toyota-FJ-Cruiser-like caricature.

Report: Mercedes-Benz GLK coupe to get 2016 intro

By Jonathon Ramsey

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK - dead-on front view

Radio chatter around the emerging small, premium crossover coupe genre has thus far been dominated by the Land Rover Evoque and the Mini Paceman. According to a report in Car, the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (shown above) has received its invitation to the party and will spend the next three years getting ready: it’s said that two-door variant of the crisply-angled CUV is coming in 2016, along with a redesign befitting its sleeker intentions.

To be based on the MRA platform – the rear-drive version of the company’s three new modular platforms, it will also support the coming 2013 S-Class and could eventually get an AMG version to help it compete with segment offerings like the forthcoming Porsche Macan. Not much else is known about it beyond its name: Car says it will be called the GLC, a friendly nomenclature we remember best as a Mazda hatchback (allegedly for “Good Little Car”). Internet oldtimers may remember the Mazda GLC as the predecessor to the 323 (which in turn came before today’s Mazda3). Either way, the GLC is not to be confused with the larger upcoming BMW X6 rival based on the ML-Class (reportedly called GLS) which is also said to still be in the works, or the front-drive based GLA, a model also edging toward production.

Stealthy Business Line Exterior Package to be Offered for Euro-Spec 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

By Jens Meiners

In America and Asia, car owners typically want to flaunt what they’ve got. It’s a bit of a different story in Europe: The public is sensitive to inequality, and it’s considered to be in poor taste to drive a vehicle that draws too much attention to itself. This explains the utter failure of traditional luxury cars on the Continent. (Sales of the BMW 7-series and the Mercedes S-class are a fraction of what they were decades ago.) It’s more acceptable to arrive in a mid-size sedan, preferably without range- or lineup-topping badging. Affluent car owners don’t just shun the luxury segment, they also prefer to keep their vehicle’s performance under wraps, too.

This mindset doesn’t do any favors for Mercedes-Benz or its new E-class. Affalterbach’s take on Benz’s new mainstream sedan, the E63 AMG, is so aggressively styled that there is no way to mask its status at the top of the automotive food chain. This 550- or 577-hp monster can easily be distinguished from its less powerful siblings thanks to massive air intakes, darkened wheels, and enormous quad exhaust outlets. It’s the antithesis of automotive modesty; in Europe, and particularly in Germany, this is precisely the sort of thing that’s frowned upon.

No doubt in an effort to protect the social fabric in Germany, AMG will provide a convenient solution to this predicament—a solution that does not involve a performance downgrade. Instead, we are told by AMG CEO Ola Källenius, the company soon will offer a Business Line option. This is a package that must be ordered through AMG’s Performance Studio, bringing the styling of the E63 AMG—a prototype of which we’ve been taken for a ride in by Mercedes—in line with the more pedestrian level of a standard E-class and doing away with the quad exhaust. The option won’t be offered in the U.S. as Källenius says the desire to tone down exterior appearances is an “almost exclusively German phenomenon.”

Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG spied in Sweden

By Jeffrey N. Ross

We’ve spotted the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA testing a couple times in recent months in getting closer to production form and shedding camouflage, but now it looks like we’re see our first look at the AMG version of this compact crossover. The low ride height might trick some into thinking that we’re just seeing the already-confirmed A45 AMG out testing, but the unique beltline, rear doors and side windows confirm this is some version of the GLA-Class.

What makes us so confident that this is the AMG model? Well, for starters, this prototype has beefier brakes with cross-drilled front and rear rotors and bigger front calipers, but it also sports dual exhaust outlets poking through the rear fascia and a suspension that has been lowered considerably. Our spy shooters said that this car’s exhaust note made it almost certainly an AMG model.

Just to be clear, the GLA AMG will not be powered by a 4.5-liter engine. The closely related A45 AMG will carry the “45” in its name to celebrate the first 45 years of AMG, and our sources seem to indicate the AMG version of the GLA will do the same. We’re expecting this sporty crossover to produce as much as 350 horsepower from its AMG-tuned four-cylinder engine, and like the all-new E63 AMG, it could very well come standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive.

With the standard GLA-Class not expected to debut until this fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the GLA45 AMG might have to wait until sometime next year to get its official introduction; although, as a note, Mercedes-Benz did reveal all of its E-Class models (including the E63 AMG) at the same this week at the Detroit Auto Show.

Detroit: 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is dressed to impress

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class - live in Detroit

The main focus of Mercedes-Benz’s presence here at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show will be the fully redesigned 2014 E-Class (and its too-hot AMG counterpart), but the German automaker did bring along another tasty little morsel for a sneak preview. Meet the new 2014 CLA-Class – a swoopy compact sedan based on the already successful new A-Class hatchback that’ll be arriving Stateside in September of this year. Mercedes-Benz introduced its new entry-level car to the world at Detroit’s Westin Book Cadillac hotel, but the CLA won’t be making an appearance under the lights of Cobo Hall. Instead, the company will be shipping its new four-door off to be officially debuted to the public at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin later this week, and its first official viewing at an auto show will be at the Geneva Motor Show.

And what a shame that is. We spent a few hours ogling the new CLA and it’s sort of sad that show-goers in Detroit this week won’t be able to do the same. It’s an impossibly pretty car from every single angle, Mercedes-Benz showing it off here in a deep red and a flat gray, the latter with optional sport appearance goodies. Part of that attractiveness is thanks to how stylishly slippery the CLA is – it boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.23, making it the most aerodynamic series production vehicle in the world. (Take that, Prius!)

It’s roughly the same size as a C-Class, and the four-door coupe language works quite well here in a smaller package.

It’s a nicely proportioned thing, too. It’s roughly the same size as a C-Class, and the four-door coupe language works quite well here in a smaller package. Mercedes designers have done a fantastic job with this sleek design on the larger CLS, and it’s arguably even better-looking here on this little guy. You really need to see the CLA in person to realize just how good it looks.

When the 2014 CLA-Class launches in the United States this fall, it will initially come only in CLA250 guise, packing a turbocharged 1.8-liter inline-four good for 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive will be standard, but Mercedes-Benz will also be offering a retuned version of its 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The company says that its AMG performance arm was heavily involved in the development of this new 4Matic architecture, and if that’s the case, there’s reason to expect good things. We’ll have to wait a little longer for the full-on AMG package, previewed by the A45 AMG hatchback in Europe.

Inside, the CLA boasts the same levels of refinement found across its current lineup, and while you might think the cabin is a bit cramped – especially in the back – that isn’t the case. No, those rear seats aren’t what we’d call capacious (our apologies to taller passengers), but they aren’t all that bad. And regardless, the interior is a comfy, cushy place.

Mercedes-Benz is hoping to attract a whole host of new buyers with the CLA-Class – people who would never have considered shopping the luxury automaker in the past. If the early accomplishments of the A-Class overseas are any indication (Mercedes-Benz says its launch of the A-Class was one of the most successful in the company’s history), then perhaps this same magic can happen in the States with the CLA. And with pricing expected to fall around $30,000, that might not be too far-fetched of a thought.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG: More power and 4MATIC Traction

By Jens Meiners

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC sedan

The logic is pretty simple. Adding more power is useless unless sufficient traction is available to get it to the ground. That’s AMG’s thinking at least, and for 2014 the North American-bound CLS63 AMG four-door “coupe” gets the same all-wheel-drive system and power enhancements as those added to the previously announced 2014 E63 AMG four-door sedan. Little surprise, as the CLS, after all, is little more than a rebodied E-class; under the surface, the cars are virtually identical. READ MORE ››

Official: Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG gains 4Matic grip, still barking mad

By Jonathon Ramsey

Ladies and gentlemen, allow us to introduce the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG 4Matic in both sedan and wagon variants. It’s best to get right to business, that being the numbers produced by the twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 located in the engine bay of one of the fastest sedans in the world. The ‘base’ model gets a boost of 32 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque for a final output of 550 hp and 531 lb-ft. A high performance S-Model – the US-market wagon will only be an S-Model – gets even more besides, putting out 577 hp and 590 lb-ft.

The standard sedan gets from 0-to-60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds, the S-Model sedan taking a tenth off.

All that power gets to the ground through the AMG Speedshift MCT dual-clutch transmission with Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Manual modes. The juice is then routed through the permanent “performance-oriented” all-wheel drive signified by the 4Matic moniker, which is biased 33/67 front-to-rear. The AWD system adds just 154 pounds to the car’s weight.

Not that you’d know it, nor mind. Put to use, the standard sedan gets from 0-to-60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds, the S-Model sedan taking a tenth off that time, the S-Model wagon matching it at 3.6 seconds. Top speed for the 550-hp sedan is an electronically-limited 155 mph, while the AMG Performance Package boosts that to an electronically-limited 186 mph. All models come with the AMG adaptive sports suspension – steel in front, air suspension in back – and electronically controlled damping and Torque Vectoring Brake system, the S-Model also gets a limited-slip rear differential.

Turning to other visceral matters, the new front face features all-LED headlights flanking the AMG twin-blade grille, those placed above the “A-wing” design element forming the lower intakes. The standard model rides on 10-spoke, 19-inch titanium gray alloys, the S-Model getting high-sheen rim flanges to set it apart. Other ways to tell the models with the extra power are their red brake calipers, high-gloss treatment on the A-wing and “S” badge on the trunk. Inside, one finds a black interior set off by contrasting gray stitching throughout, silver seat belts, flat-topped and flat-bottomed Nappa leather steering wheel with Alcantara inserts, and a 1,200-watt, 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo.

We’ll have more on it from the floor of the Detroit Auto Show. For now, amuse yourself with the detailed press release below and the high-res galleries of the E-Class AMG in its two flavors.

Report: <i>Autocar</i> reveals 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class details

By Jonathon Ramsey

The clouds around the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class are still as thick as those on a morning in Borneo, but Autocar has worked up a passel of details on the Mercedes that will no longer be an entry-level offering when it arrives. With the CLA sliding into the Mercedes starter-kit slot, the C-Class will, according to insiders, “discard the idea that the C-class is a car bought by your grandfather” and “meet the expectations of a younger generation of buyers, both visually and technically.”

That means throwing out almost everything that we’re used to with the current car. Looks-wise the 2014 sedan is expected to be “far more dramatic” and more sporty. It will also be larger; the CLA is predicted to be a couple of inches longer than the current C-Class, so the coming C-Class will grow by nearly four inches on its MRA platform, with three inches of that growth between the wheels. If accurate, the new length would make it longer than the BMW 3 Series and about the same as the Audi A4. Track and overall width likewise expand, the result being the cabin will provide more room in every direction. Still, the new architecture should make it lighter than the current car.

Standard engines will come in the familiar mix of four-cylinders and V6s in gas and diesel forms, spanning the chart from 120 to 330 horsepower to and all equipped with stop/start tech and brake energy recuperation. Top of the line will be the AMG version with the new twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V8, expected to be available in every iteration of the C-Class: sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible. They will be mounted lower and further rearward than at present, and there are rumors of a plug-in hybrid with an 18-mile all-electric range. Those powerplants will be worked through a six-speed manual or updated seven-speed automatic.

The hard-edged side is predicted to get a boost from a switch to a double-wishbone suspension in front and an “extensively redesigned” multi-link setup in back, with all models getting adaptive damping. Outside of spy shots, we don’t think we’ll see it until the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Uncovered Before Detroit Debut

By Darryl

It is rather inevitable that we get to catch a glimpse at many vehicles before their official debut at an upcoming auto show, especially in knowing the nature of the internet. With that said, the new 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG gets a reveal on one of Benz’ global press sites before the Detroit Auto Show debut. The photo also includes the full line of E-Class vehicles for the 2014 model year, including the new E-Class Sedan, Coupe, Convertible and Wagon.

Thanks to Motor Trend, we already know what to expect under the hood of the menacing E63 AMG, a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 with around 570 to 575 horsepower. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a 7-speed wet clutch automatic gearbox and 4Matic all-wheel-drive system featuring a 33/67 front-rear power split. Working together, the AMG drivetrain should push the E63 AMG to 60 mph in about 3.4 seconds.

More details will unfold next week as the official debut of the new Mercedes-Benz E Class and E63 AMG takes place.

Official: Mercedes-Benz reveals freshened 2014 E-Class Coupe and Convertible

By Jeffrey N. Ross

We’ve already had our official look at the 2014 Mercedes-E-Class sedan and wagon as well as a sneak peek at the new E63 AMG, and now we finally see what the facelifted E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet will look like. All of the refreshed E-Class models will be making their debut at the Detroit Auto Show, but we’ll have to wait until summer to see the new coupe and convertible models on the road.

The slightly reworked exterior designs take many of the cues introduced on the sedan, but the coupe and cabriolet carry over one of the previous E-Class’ wide, pontoon-like rear haunches. Fortunately, the rest of the design makes it much easier to overlook this awkward element, as the refreshed front end has an eye-catching, concept-like styling with the new single-piece headlights and the aggressive fascia. Not wanting to totally abandon the quad-headlight look that dates back to the 1990s, the new front end has unique LED running lights that visually split the headlights in two helping to create a recognizable yet distinctive face. New LED taillights and a reshaped rear fascia finish off the visual improvements on these cars.

Inside, designers made equally modest yet effective changes by tweaking the design of the steering wheel and incorporating Direct Select lever rather than using the console-mounted shift lever on the previous car. Mercedes has made this update on many of its newest models, and it’s pretty remarkable how moving the gear selector can make such a difference on an interior. For the Cabriolet, the acoustic soft top helps ensure a quiet interior with the top up, and the car also features front and rear wind deflectors that automatically deploy to keep cabin noise at a manageable level with the top down. Some of the new technology in the 2014 E-Class includes the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, Active Parking Assist and a 360-degree camera for a bird’s-eye view when parking.

While the sedan will get a four-cylinder engine, an AMG model and even a new hybrid model, the coupe and cabriolet will carry over their powertrains and model designations from 2013, which include the E350 and E550; the E350 Coupe is still available with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, too. 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG Tested: Seven Seats Bolted to a 550 hp, Twin-Turbo V-8

By Jared Gall

2013 Mercedes Benz GL63 AMG

The introduction of the 550-hp GL63 AMG last summer sparked a debate in our business about whether this vehicle is proof that AMG has lost its mind. We say no, no, 550 times no. Remember that AMG’s first race car was an S-class nicknamed the Red Sow. The firm is first and foremost a powerhouse: It transforms Mercedes vehicles into stealth sleds bristling with improper levels of horsepower. READ MORE ››

Mercedes-AMG Developing Twin-Turbo 4.0-Liter V-8 for Next-Gen C63 and SLS Replacement

By Jens Meiners

Mercedes-AMG’s M156 ad M159, the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 that powers the SLS and the C63, won’t be around for much longer.

Insiders close to Mercedes-Benz have confirmed a report by Autocar claiming that the AMG version of the next-generation C-class and the successor to the SLS will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. Car and Driver can further reveal that the engine, code-named M177, will produce between 460 and 500 hp in the next-gen C—which will come to market in 2015. For use in the SLS’s replacement, which is set for a 2016 launch, the powerplant will be referred to as M178 and will produce in the region of 590 hp.

This news spells the end for the legendary M156/M159 6.2-liter V-8, a naturally aspirated mill designed by Bernd Ramler, an engineer who was deeply involved in the conception of the 604-hp, 5.7-liter V-1o that powered the Porsche Carrera GT. The M177/M178 also could eventually replace the M157—the twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 that currently powers the entirety of AMG’s lineup outside the SLS, the C63, and the SLK55. The SLK55 AMG’s naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V-8—code-named M152—also is set to be replaced, and the new 4.0-liter turbo would be the likeliest of successors.

What happens to the nomenclature of the new models isn’t known yet. We believe that the misleading “63″ moniker applied to all V-8–powered AMG models—with the exception of the SLK55—will remain. It’s also possible AMG could adopt “60″ as the new handle for its V-8s. A displacement-appropriate name of “40″ is out of the question with the introduction of the A45 and upcoming CLA45, both of which will be powered by a high-output 2.0-liter turbo four.

With the new engine, AMG will offer a displacement identical to Audi’s twin-turbo V-8, which powers several S and RS versions and the Bentley Continental GT V-8. Although Mercedes will have cut 2200 cubic centimeters from its C63, that car’s direct competition in BMW’s next-gen M3 and M4 as well as Cadillac’s upcoming ATS-V will be powered by turbocharged six-cylinders—further proof that the more-horses-from-fewer-cubes war rages on.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-class Photos Posted Early

By Jens Meiners

Mercedes-Benz has high hopes for its upcoming compact CLA sedan. Based on the brand’s new front-wheel-drive platform, it is a close relative of the third-generation A-class. The CLA’s looks aren’t a huge surprise, as it was previewed by the Concept Style Coupé, our spy photographers snapped a few shots of an undisguised CLA earlier in the year, and AMG posted pictures on its Facebook page of a camouflaged CLA45 AMG earlier this month. But here is the real thing after these photos hit AutoMonthly—and judging from the style of the photographs, we believe these are not press shots but photos from a sales brochure for the upcoming model.

Mercedes is taking a gamble with the expressive design of the CLA. To get some perspective, we got on the phone with Gernot Bracht, who teaches transportation design in Pforzheim, Germany. His opinion of the compact four-door is that it represents a design language in Germany that’s become somewhat ambiguous.

“The CLA is clearly informed by Asian tastes, and it symbolizes yet another departure from the traditionally purist German approach to design,” he says. “But this is becoming a trend, and in a way the CLA reminds me of Opel’s approach with the new Adam.” Bracht does not buy into Benz’s insinuations that the CLA is a “small CLS,” saying: “The upper character line drops down too early. It does not quite come together with the big trunk, which seems like an add-on. Altogether, the car is too short to carry all of these lines and graphics with grace.” His conclusion: “Definitely not a typical Mercedes-Benz.”

But perhaps that’s exactly what Mercedes has tried to achieve, considering the CLA marks an aggressive move downmarket. In the U.S., the model targets a younger crowd than does the current lineup. As to what’s below the skin, we’ll have to wait for official information until mid-January. We already know that the CLA will be offered with 1.6- and 2.0-liter gasoline engines, as well as 1.8-liter and 2.1-liter diesel engines, all of them turbocharged and covering a wide power and performance range; we’re not likely to see anything but the 2.0-liter and possibly the 2.1-liter diesel in the U.S. There could be an entry-level model using a Renault-sourced 1.5-liter turbo-diesel, and then there is the CLA45 AMG with around 350 hp. All-wheel drive will be standard on the AMG version and optional on select other models.

More information on Benz’s CLA should become available in the coming weeks as the car’s as-yet-unannounced debut date looms.

Video: <i>Car and Driver</i> gets a deeper look at the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

By Jonathon Ramsey

It’s still under a suit of camouflage, but Mercedes-Benz brought an E63 AMG to Southern California and invited Car and Driver columnist and former Editor-in-Chief Csaba Csere to ride shotgun. Before clicking in, Csere does a walkaround and notes the changes, most of which we’ve seen on the refreshed standard E-Class. He then takes a ride with the head of AMG, Olla Källenius, and asks questions that Källenius spends much of his time not exactly answering.

Things get more informative when Csere hops in the car with Tobias Moers, AMG‘s head of vehicle development, to find out exactly what separates the AMG E-Class from its less-heated brother. Csere especially wanted to know if the addition of 4MATIC killed the sporting intentions of the AMG sedan, and was pleased to find out that that wasn’t – well, not exactly – the case.

Car and Driver also puts numbers to the coming sedan, pegging the 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8 at 550 horsepower and 531 foot-pounds of torque, for 32 more horses and 15 more torques than the outgoing model. In Csere’s written piece for the magazine, he predicts a sub-3.5-second time for the 0-to-60 mile-per-hour sprint (in the video it’s predicted to be 3.3 seconds), with the run to 100 mph needing another 4.3 seconds. The quarter-mile is estimated to take 11.7 seconds, and gas mileage is expected to remain the same: 16 miles per gallon in the city, 24 mpg on the highway. For context, Car and Driver‘s split for the 2012 E63 AMG was 3.8 seconds for the sprint from naught to 60 mph, and a 12-second quarter mile.

The super-sedan will go on sale next summer, with more official specs being revealed at the Detroit Auto Show. In the meantime, there’s the video below.
