CNN ‘Crossfire’ Alumni Hope Political Debate Show Returns

By The Huffington Post News Editors

NEW YORK -– As news broke Friday afternoon that CNN executives were considering bringing back “Crossfire”, the conversation on Twitter quickly turned to “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart.

Stewart was never a regular on “Crossfire,” the right-vs.-left political debate show that aired on CNN for 22 years. But his heated October 2004 spat with then co-host Tucker Carlson, and his on-air critique that the show was “hurting America,” has become linked with its demise. “I agree wholeheartedly with Jon Stewart‘s overall premise,” former CNN president Jon Klein said upon pulling the plug on “Crossfire” in January 2005.

But in interviews with The Huffington Post, several former “Crossfire” co-hosts said they believed Stewart’s criticism was over the top. They expressed hope for the long-running show’s return, emphasizing the decades of important political and policy debates hashed out on set.

Jon Stewart Interview With George Carlin From 1997 Is Amazing (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

This old video of Jon Stewart interviewing George Carlin is making waves on Reddit and we just had to share.

The interview is from 1997, years before Stewart got the Daily Show gig. The late comic legend shares some of his thoughts on show business, success and more. Stewart shows that he’s always been a terrific interviewer and that he has great taste in leather jackets.

But perhaps the best moment comes around 9:45 as segment is ending. Carlin tells Stewart, “You are going to show us a lot, and I looked forward to it.”

Cory Booker Engages In ‘Star Trek’ Trivia Contest During Radio Call-In

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D) put talk of his likely U.S. Senate campaign and love of Twitter aside Tuesday night to engage in a “Star Trek” trivia contest while calling into a New Jersey radio station’s pledge drive.

Booker competed with comedian and “Daily Show” correspondent John Hodgman in the contest on WFMU, a Jersey City-based radio station, around 11 p.m. Tuesday. The Star-Ledger first reported Booker’s late night geek-a-thon Wednesday evening, posting audio of the 15-minute interview.

“John and I know the difference between a Vulcan mind meld and a Jedi mind trick,” Booker told host Tom Scharpling when he was challenged to battle Hodgman in the trivia contest.

Video: Daily Show takes a long, hard look at the Detroit-Canada bridge fiasco

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

Detroit Ambassador Bridge

You mean to tell me that one man owns the busiest international border crossing in the entire United States? One that carries about 25 percent of all trade between the US and Canada? Ha! With apologies to George C. Parker, if you believe that, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Wait. This is for real, as in, a real bridge? Apparently so. The Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan with Windsor, Ontario, Canada is in fact owned by a billionaire Grosse Pointe, Michigan resident named Manuel “Matty” Moroun. Moroun is none too pleased with the prospect of a new bridge, proposed years ago and backed by the US and Canadian governments, competing with his own. The billionaire went so far as to fund a multi-million-dollar campaign seeking to create a constitutional amendment that would require a statewide vote to fund such a project. The proposition was voted down, meaning the bridge project could proceed.

We haven’t yet explained the best part: Canada plans to pay for the entire bridge. That’s right. The Canadian government has agreed to pay for the construction of the bridge, the land in Michigan that would need to be acquired and the construction of necessary on-ramps to Detroit’s I-75 highway. Which would leave Michigan and its residents with, well, absolutely zero financial obligation.

Here’s where we point out that a huge amount of automotive trade is carried over the Ambassador bridge. In fact, according to the New International Trade Crossing website, Chrysler has estimated that “delays at the Detroit-Windsor crossing adds more than $600 to the average car manufactured in the Michigan-Ontario region.”

Leave it up to The Daily Show to turn such an oddly controversial topic into a hilarious video segment. We suggest you check it out below, and pay special attention to the parody of Chrysler’s well-known “Born in Detroit” marketing campaign.

The Appeal Of RINO Hypocrites At Party Headquarters—irresistible!

By Suzanne Eovaldi

Republican Elephant 2 SC The appeal of RINO hypocrites at Party headquarters—irresistible!

The hypocrites in the Republican Party of Florida are rolling out the snail mail appeals again “to get everyone back on board.” I sat for a week at the Congressman Allen West debacle in November to watch disappointed Bill Paterson, Chairman of the Republican Executive Committee in St. Lucie County, keep checking his phone calls and Emails. Are they coming? Are they on the way yet? As he said “no” over and over throughout the long sad week, I saw him shrinking from lack of support from the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) and the attorneys supposedly on their way from Tallahassee (Tally) to oversee the West recount. Nothing! Not one show of support for our brave Colonel West, the only unabashedly vocal spokesman of conservative values in the US House!

I stood in the audience at newly elected Governor Rick Scott’s inaugural celebration when he told conservatives: “If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be standing up here now.” “Thank you so much!” I saw NO members of the RPOF or Republican state lawmakers. Someone said there was “one around”; but if so, he was certainly not on stage with the Governor.

Scott is drawing $1.00 in annual salary. He paid for his own campaign. NO help from the Republican Party. Now get this: “To help the Governor and other Republican candidates defend themselves from the Democrat attack machine, we can’t wait until next January to begin,” says Lenny Curry, State Chairman, RPOF. Through Curry, the Party hopes to take credit for all Governor Scott is doing, mainly by himself and CERTAINLY without their help! Curry says, “Thanks to Governor Scott, our Republican State Cabinet, and our Republican legislature, Florida’s success in creating new jobs and enticing businesses to relocate here has made our state the envy of the nation.” Noteworthy here is the fact that I have seen NO action from the RPOF in St. Lucie County to counter those attacks on the Governor by the liberal-progressives from the Treasure Coast. In fact, when a typically left-leaning Scripps editorialist called Governor Scott a “LOUT,” I stood alone in calling the man and blasting him. Where was the RPOF?

One eminently qualified, retired, conservative Army colonel from Stuart made a run at RINO Congressman Gayle Harrell’s seat in a primary battle. The RPOF told the Colonel they would have to deny him funding as they only support incumbents in primaries. Apparently, this is to reassure the RINO, insider voting base that it needn’t worry; that is, that new blood will be locked out and conservative voices remain unheard! The Colonel lost his primary bid and didn’t run again.

This is just what the insider cabal in Tallahassee want– same old, same old. Republican Representative Scott Plakon, then head of the House Energy committee, ignored appeals from those of us trying to block the roll out of Obama’s smart meters in Florida. The congressman had time to appear on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show and to beg me for donations, but he couldn’t respond to even one of my many letters or to the questions I posed in a 50 page report—a report which HE asked me to DO!

No thanks, Lenny Curry. Your vapid “We need you now more than ever before” appeal has fallen on deaf ears. I did however retrieve your last unopened request for campaign contributions from my garbage can. You will find my response just as powerful as the odor.

And that’s where the rest of your stuff is going. When the spirit moves me, I’ll donate directly to each candidate’s campaign, right at their campaign headquarters from now on. Tally doesn’t rally for me.
