Homer's Odyssey Goes to Space

Sing to me of the adaptation, Muse, the Warner Bros. plan to make a film version of The Odyssey set in outer space.

How sparkling-eyed Athena drove the studio to hire James DiLapo to put pen to parchment; to re-imagine Homer’s epic poem about hard-suffering Odysseus and his long journey home from the Trojan War, only with a sci-fi twist.

Oh Zeus! Golden-haired Brad Pitt was once attached to star, for the gods know he played Achilles in Warners’ Troy, though he has since left the project. But still, the studio does see franchise potential for The Odyssey. Maybe they can call it A Space Odyssey.

True, the people might well wonder who James DiLapo is; graduated from NYU just last summer, the great DiLapo’s first script, Devils at Play, made the divine 2012 Black List. The daughter of Zeus, whose shield is storm and thunder, indeed watches over him.

Rejecting 'Argo,' Iran to produce film version of 1979 hostage crisis

The Iranian government doesn’t want director Ben Affleck‘s latest movie, “Argo,” to be the last word on the 1979 hostage crisis. A state-affiliated arts bureau is planning to produce its own film to offer Iran‘s version of the story, according to a report in the Guardian.

Iran‘s semi-offical Mehr news agency says “The General Staff” will be directed by Tehran-based filmmaker Ataollah Salmanian.

“The film, which will be a big production, should be an appropriate response to the ahistoric film ‘Argo,'” Salmanian explained.

The Oscar-nominated “Argo” reveals the back story of the CIA-backed mission to rescue six American diplomats stranded in the Canadian ambassador’s home following Iran‘s Islamic revolution. The film was well-reviewed, has been a blockbuster for Warner Bros. and was nominated this week for a best picture Oscar, but critics complained of several historical inaccuracies.

This Iranian tale is expected to portray cowardly U.S. diplomats who are treated well by their captors and eventually safely returned by their Iranian hosts.

“Argo” is banned in Iran and viewed as “anti-Iranian.” Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hosseini described it as “an offensive act” motivated by “evil intentions, ” the Guardian reports.

Filmgoers in the country will instead get the Iranian perspective of the 1979 events, which may ignore the U.S. rescue mission and use a different hostage plotline. Salmanian is already working on the script.

“The movie… is about the 20 American hostages who were delivered to the United States by the revolutionaries,” the director told Mehr.

Salmanian may be referring to the group of American diplomats who were freed as a humanitarian gesture shortly after the 444-day crisis began.

Warners Scores Another Superman Copyright Win

In its never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way, Warner Bros. has scored another legal win today against the heirs of Superman’s co-creators.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal has ruled that the heirs of co-creator Jerry Siegel made a binding agreement in 2001 which gave Warners the full rights to the character. This follows last fall’s ruling in favor of the studio over the estate of co-creator Joe Shuster.

In effect, this means that Man of Steel, Justice League, and many, many sequels can now be released by Warner Bros… though surely that was never in doubt anyway.

Godzilla Reboot Will Feature Multiple Monsters

How well does Frank Darabont know his Mothra? Can he wax poetic about Rodan? Does Mechagodzilla haunt his dreams?

Superman Could Star in Godzilla

The question must be raised, because Chud is reporting that Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla remake — which Darabont is now scripting — will feature more than one monster. That includes two new creatures that will be on the move in the film in addition to Godzilla, though it doesn’t seem to rule out the chances of any old-school Toho faves making an appearance too.

Here's Your First Look at Superman: Unbound

It looks like Matthew Bomer is getting that Superman treatment after all. The White Collar star has landed the title role in the upcoming animated feature Superman: Unbound.

TV Guide has our first look (below) at the flick, which features an impressive cast including Fringe’s John Noble as Braniac, and Castle costars Stana Katic and Molly Quinn as Lois Lane and Supergirl, respectively.

Based on a 2008 Action Comics storyline by Geoff Johns, Unbound “pits the Man of Steel against Brainiac, an alien who attacks planets, shrinks one city small enough to fit in a bottle, then destroys the rest of the planet.” This is the latest installment in a series of movie adaptations from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment.

Del Toro Talks DC Supernatural Heroes Film

I caught up with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro earlier today to talk to him about his latest producing effort, the ghost movie Mama, but during the course of our chat we of course veered into other geeky topics as well. We’ll be running the full interview with del Toro soon, but for now I wanted to share with you this update on his DC Comics movie — a team-up of many of the supernatural characters from DC.

There appears to be increasing interest in the project at Warner Bros. GDT confirmed that he’s working on the outline for the film — which has a working title of Dark Universe — and he’s also found the “perfect” writer to pen the screenplay (though he won’t say who that is yet). While del Toro cautions that this is far from a done deal, he’s pretty excited about the prospect of it happening as it will bring together many of his favorite characters from childhood — everyone from Swamp Thing to The Spectre to Zatanna. Man, I’m excited too…

Warner Bros. Creates Animation Think Tank

Warner Bros. is now diving in head first into the world of animation, assembling an animation think tank to create what the studio calls high-end animated motion pictures.

Coming aboard the initiative are John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, who directed Crazy, Stupid, Love for Warners, as well as Phil Lord and Chris Miller, known for their work on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the studio’s upcoming LEGO: Piece of Resistance. Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets) and Jared Stern (Mr. Popper’s Penguins) are also joining the initiative.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. hopes that once the process takes off, they’ll be able to release one animated feature per year. However, the studio will not be creating a new animation division, so the films will still be released under the Warner Bros. Pictures banner. Development will take place at the studio’s Burbank HQ, with the actual animation produced at an established animation house.

Warner Bros. Among Potential THQ Buyers

Five “strategic buyers” are reportedly performing “active due diligence” on THQ. According to Distressed Debt Investing, who attended a hearing today at a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, five buyers are interested, including Warner Bros.

On its Twitter account, Distressed Debt Investing reports that Sam Greene of Centerview Partners (THQ’s banker) testified that five “strategic buyers” are “in active due diligence in THQ.” DDI adds that the five buyers “are interested in individual titles” rather than buying THQ outright, but that Clearlake Capital (the financial firm that is awaiting approval to buy THQ) has said that isn’t allowed.

Middle-earth Theme Park Attraction in the Works?

Not to be outdone by Disney’s recent Marvel theme park concept, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. have reportedly approached the Tolkien estate about developing a new theme park attraction based on Middle-earth.

The story comes from Mice Chat, which says the studios are currently in talks to bring The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to Universal theme parks. Coming off the success of their Wizarding World of Harry Potter, it is likely that the studios would take a similar approach for this. Likewise, Hypable suggests that the Tolkiens have even spoken to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling about how pleased she was with her property’s theme park interpretation.

New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced via his site that companies including NCSoft, THQ and Funcom have agreed to purge the accounts of registered sex offenders from their games. First Look at Tom Hardy's Mad Max

Bryan Singer's Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone could be returning to TV again. EW reports that CBS Productions is in the very early stages of development on a new version of the classic anthology series, with Bryan Singer (X-Men) executive producing. There is no writer attached yet, or a network – CBS Productions is the studio side of the company, so the project wouldn’t necessarily be for the CBS network.

The original Twilight Zone ran on CBS from 1959-1964 and there have been two previous revivals, one running on CBS from 1985-1989 and the most recent on UPN, which only ran for a single season from 2002-2003.

What isn’t clear yet is how, if at all, this impact development of the new Twilight Zone movie Leonardo DiCaprio is producing at Warner Bros.

Zombieland Director Talks Spy Hunter Movie

If Zombieland and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer can’t have 007 then he’ll settle for Spy Hunter, the long-gestating adaptation of the classic video game that’s now set to be produced by Lin Pictures for Warner Bros. Fleischer became attached to the project in September.

In an exclusive chat with ComingSoon, Fleischer said, “If I can make any movie, it would be a James Bond movie. I’ve always loved the genre but I don’t think they’ll hire an American to direct a James Bond movie, I’ve been told, so for me, Spy Hunter is an opportunity to create a new spy franchise. It sounds silly but that was my favorite video game when I was a kid and it had a great title and a great theme song, but there’s no real other associations that people have with it other than a cool car, so I feel like there’s a lot of room for us to invent a new character and a new series. I think just the Spy Hunter that is the most bad-ass spy who hunts down rogue spies is a really cool launch pad for an idea and I hope that we can bring it to life.”

Redbox Instant to take on Netflix, but won't include TV shows

Although Redbox Instant has been billed as a rival to Netflix, it’ll be a much different kind of streaming video service, according to new details.

Redbox Instant by Verizon, as it’s officially called, will be “targeted squarely at movie lovers,” Shawn Strickland, the chief executive of the service, told the Associated Press. It’ll have about 5,500 streaming movies at launch, but no TV shows.

That’s a big difference compared to Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Videos, which both rely heavily on TV shows to fill out their catalogs. For TV junkies who use those services to binge on serial dramas like “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad,” Redbox Instant‘s focus on movies may be a deal-breaker.

Verizon and Redbox parent company Coinstar hope to make up for it by offering more popular movies, with content coming from Warner Bros., Epix, MGM and Lionsgate. For instance, Redbox Instant will offer “The Hunger Games,” a film that hit theaters last March, for instant streaming.

Warners Prevails in Hobbit Mockbuster Lawsuit

It looks like only one Hobbit will be making its debut this weekend. Earlier today, Warner Bros, New Line Cinema, MGM and producer Saul Zaentz were granted a temporary restraining order against Global Asylum‘s “mockbuster” Age of the Hobbits, which had been scheduled for release the same week as Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
“This victory underscores the importance of protecting the unique work of our industry’s creative community from companies like Asylum, whose cynical business model is designed to profit from the work of others,” Warner Bros. told Deadline in a statement. “Their intent to create confusion in the marketplace on the eve of release of The Hobbit, one of the most anticipated films of the year, has met with defeat.”
