2014 Audi RS7

Filed under:

Audi has officially priced the svelte 2014 RS7 from $104,900 (*not including $825 for destination), undercutting its sole competitor, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe, by $8100. Even when we’re talking about six-figure super sedans, that’s not a small amount of money. And soon, this class of sleek stormers will be joined by the updated Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG 4Matic.

With its combination of a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter, 560-horsepower V8 engine and Audi’s excellent Quattro all-wheel drive, the RS7 is expected to hit 60 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than the manufacturer estimate for the M6 Gran Coupe.

We’ve already given the RS7 a thorough shakedown in Europe, and we came away quite impressed with just how stunning this Audi is, both to drive and to look at. Now that we’ve got a price to go along with the performance and style, this Audi is even more appealing – in our high-dollar dreams, anyway. Take a look at a short video from Audi, as well as the official press blast, below.

Read This: Lack of 35mm film, replacement parts putting hurt on America's drive-ins [w/poll]

By Damon Lowney

Drive-in movie theaters turn 80 years old this summer, and, soon, they might die of old age. There are only 360 drive-in theaters left in the US – down from 4,000 at their peak in 1958 – and the 35-millimeter film projectors that they use to screen movies are quickly losing support from studios, which have switched to digital methods of capturing pictures.

Remember the four-foot poles with speakers built in? You’d pull your car up to it, park, and open your windows to listen to the movie. Well, there’s only one company left that makes parts for those speakers, and they don’t support surround sound. And the cost to upgrade the projectors to digital systems is prohibitively expensive. James Kopp, manager at the Family Drive-In Theatre in Stephens City, Virginia, says he was quoted nearly $140,000 to make the switch to digital, The Washington Post reports.

Pennsauken, New Jersey, was the first US city to build a drive-in, yet there are no more of them in the state. As gloomy as it looks, there are drive-ins trying to make the switch to digital projection systems, and there are ones that already have. But as drive-ins fall further from our minds, the question is, do people care?

Read The Washington Post article, and tell us what you think in the poll below.

Mini-nuclear plants the next frontier of US power supply — or the next Solyndra?

A boon to the economy? Or a boondoggle? That’s the debate raging over a new nuclear technology that — depending on your perspective — is either a game-changer in electrical generation, or a failure-in-the-making that will fleece taxpayers for a half- billion dollars.

Report: Next Chevy Spark coming in 2015, Sonic delayed

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

As the best-selling Chevrolet product in Europe and a surprising new hit here in the US, the Spark is proving to be quite an important global vehicle for General Motors. Even though the Spark just went on sale in the US last year, it has been on sale globally since 2009, and Automotive News Europe is reporting that the next-generation Spark is expected to debut during the first half of 2015. There is no information about the new Spark except for reports that it will continue to be built in South Korea.

This report also says that the redesign of the Sonic/Aveo has been delayed until after 2015. Again, there was no information as to the cause of the delay, but this means the third-gen Sonic and Aveo will likely debut sometime in 2016 – five years after the debut of the current model. This follows the recent report saying that the redesign of the Cruze has been delayed by almost a year, until the end of 2015, due to engineering changes.

70 Straight Days: Treasury Says Debt Stuck At Exactly $16,699,396,000,000.00

By Breaking News

Treasury Seal SC 70 Straight Days: Treasury Says Debt Stuck at Exactly $16,699,396,000,000.00

According to the Daily Treasury Statement for July 26, which the Treasury released this afternoon, the federal debt has been stuck at exactly $16,699,396,000,000.00 for 70 straight days.

That is approximately $25 million below the legal limit of $16,699,421,095,673.60 that Congress has imposed on the debt.

The portion of the federal debt subject to the legal limit set by Congress first hit $16,699,396,000,000.00 at the close of business on May 17. At the close of every business day since then, it has also been $16,699,396,000,000.00, according to the official accounting published by the Treasury Department.

If the debt had increased by even $30 million at any time during those 70 days, it would have exceeded the statutory limit. But, according to the Treasury, the debt did not do that. Instead, it remained precisely $16,699,396,000,000.00.

Even though the government’s official accounting of the debt has not budged for 70 days, the Treasury has continued to sell bills, notes and bonds at a value that exceeds the value of the bills, notes and bonds it was redeeming.

Samsung said to be in talks to acquire German Novaled

Samsung is reportedly in talks to acquire German organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology developer Novaled.

A Novaled representative declined to comment on reports that Samsung is offering more than US$200 million for the company, but she did say it may have an announcement to make in a few days.

A Samsung spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter and referred to Samsung affiliate Cheil Industries, also known as Samsung Chemical, which would acquire Novaled, according to the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. Cheil Technologies did not respond to a request for comment.

Novaled develops technologies and materials that enhance the performance of OLEDs and other organic electronics and sells them to manufacturers of display products.

Official: Ford shows off V8-powered Ranger headed to Dakar Rally

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Avert your eyes now if you’re jealous that the global version of the Ford Ranger is not offered in the US. Ford’s midsize pickup is being tuned up to take on the 2014 Dakar Rally, and the result is a truck that is probably even cooler than any F-150 SVT Raptor we’ve ever seen in the States. Ford is actually building two versions of the truck for Dakar, which will run from January 5 through January 18, covering more than 5,000 miles from Argentina to Chile.

Starting with a fully composite body and a 5.0-liter V8 plucked from a Mustang, nearly every aspect of the trucks have been purpose built to take on the grueling race. This includes things like the six-speed sequential gearbox, liquid-cooled rear brakes and the 132-gallon fuel tank. As proof that Dakar is more about endurance than speed, the engines used in these race trucks will be limited to around 350 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, and will max out at a top speed of just 105 miles per hour. Scroll down for Ford’s official press release offering more information about the trucks and teams being prepped for Dakar.

US Has Been Building Afghan Dam Since 1950s

How Does This Work, Obama To Cut Business Taxes By Increasing Business Tax Revenues

By Tim Worstall, Contributor President Obama is giving a speech today in which he’ll propose a grand bargain to get America  working again. Sounds like a good idea so what’s the meat of it? Amazingly, it seems that the President is going to propose lowering business taxation while at the same time raising the amount of revenue coming from business taxation. Now if this was with reference to the Laffer Curve or one of the other theories about the undesirability of corporate and capital taxation in general (such as those of the Nobel Laureate Sir John Mirrlees) then it might not only be a plan but a good one. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be what is on offer. Obama long has called for a cut in corporate tax rates, but previously insisted such business tax reform be coupled with an individual tax overhaul. He’s dropping that demand and says instead that he’s open to the corporate tax cut that that businesses crave. OK, cutting the corporate tax rate, that’s a good idea. The statutory rate in the US is well above world and OECD average and can, depending upon how you want to look at it, be described as the world’s highest. But he wants it to be coupled with a significant investment on some sort of job creation program, such as manufacturing, infrastructure or community colleges. That will of course require some new amount of revenue. And even those various theories that say that a low or lower corporate tax rate will indeed grow the economy faster, thus in time producing higher tax revenue, those theories do say that this will take some time. So, in the short term, where are those extra revenues going to come from? The officials said money to pay for the jobs creation would come from a one-time revenue boost from measures such as changing depreciation rules or having a one-time fee on earnings held overseas. Either or both of those mean business paying more in tax than they do currently. And the extra “one-time boost” to revenues will necessarily be the extra amount that businesses will be paying in the future under this new proposal. …read more

Official: Chrysler banks $507 million in Q2, trims 2013 earnings forecast

By Brandon Turkus

Chrysler Technical Center, Auburn Hills, Michigan

Filed under:

Chrysler has some good news and some bad news. First, profits were up 16 percent over the second quarter of 2012, bringing the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based manufacturer $507 million on the back of strong demand for trucks and SUVs (a recurring theme this quarter, particularly in the US). Q2 revenue was up as well, from $16.8 billion in 2012 to $18 billion in 2013. The bad news is that the Pentastar’s overall earnings forecast for net income in 2013 has been trimmed from $2.2 billion to between $1.7 and $2.2 billion, according to Automotive News.

In addition to the adjusted net income forecast, Chrysler tweaked its operating profit from $3.8 billion to between $3.3 and $3.8 billion. This has gone largely unexplained by Chrysler, perhaps hoping the news of a three-percent increase in its transaction prices for Q2 will allow it to sweep this adjustment under the rug.

The star of the show for Chrysler has been its US sales, which saw a 10-percent jump, both bettering the industry average of eight percent and improving over the same stretch of 2012. As with the increase in transaction prices, Chrysler has the new Ram pickup and Jeep Grand Cherokee to thank. Perhaps most worrying from this report, though, is that every brand in the automaker’s stable saw an increase in sales… except for the Chrysler brand itself.

Chrysler’s minor woes aside, the second quarter has largely been a good one for American brands, with Chrysler joining Ford and GM in seeing healthy profits on the backs of strong new product. Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne also released a letter to the company’s employees about all of this, which you can read over at The Detroit News.

Everything We Know About Soccer Is Wrong

By Zach Slaton, Contributor

It has been nearly two months since The Numbers Game: Why Everything You Know About Soccer Is Wrong was published in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, meaning that soccer quants in North America have had to pay for international shipping if they wanted to get their hands on the book.  The need for such expensive shipping ends on July 30th, 2013 when the book is published in both the United States and Canada.  While the authors of the book, Chris Anderson and David Sally, have been very pleased with the book’s reception in Europe they are looking forward to what they hope is a slightly different reaction in North America.  David Sally explained, “I think we are really glad with the reaction in the UK and The Netherlands where the book launched a few weeks ago.  I think we’re hoping the reaction is going to be even stronger in the US because there is more of an appetite for statistics in sports.  It’s a more natural audience.  I think there is also the coolness and hipness factor to soccer.  A lot of people are trying to understand the game more deeply, and we hope the books serves as a way to get even deeper into the game.” Chris Anderson believes North Americans’ appetite for numbers combined with soccer being a less popular sport than it is in Europe makes the book perfect learning material about a game that is rising in popularity. “[Dave and I] are Americans, and we love American soccer.  We’d love to see the game grow in the US, so in whatever small way the book can tell them something about soccer they didn’t know but they wanted to know and will help them understand and make sense of what’s going on on the field when they’re watching or their kids are playing.  If we can contribute to helping grow soccer in the US in whatever small way I’d personally be really excited about that.” The way Anderson and Sally approach learning about the game is by asking repeated, intelligent questions, answering them with the best available data, and then asking the next logical question that comes from the answer to the previous question.  In laymen’s terms, they end up pealing back the layers of the soccer onion.  The duo divides their examination of the game into three parts: Before the Match, which examines the larger patterns within the game that seem largely immutable: luck accounts for 50% of the outcome of a match, frequency of scorelines are relatively consistent between top leagues, and the rarity of goal scoring makes the game somewhat unpredictable and the value of goal scorers dependent upon when they score their goals versus the scoreline of the match. On the Pitch, which explains how the game is a balance of strategies.  Preventing a goal is more important to earning points than scoring one, the game is about managing turnovers, and the game can be controlled by both tiki taka as well …read more
