2014 Audi RS7

Filed under:

Audi has officially priced the svelte 2014 RS7 from $104,900 (*not including $825 for destination), undercutting its sole competitor, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe, by $8100. Even when we’re talking about six-figure super sedans, that’s not a small amount of money. And soon, this class of sleek stormers will be joined by the updated Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG 4Matic.

With its combination of a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter, 560-horsepower V8 engine and Audi’s excellent Quattro all-wheel drive, the RS7 is expected to hit 60 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than the manufacturer estimate for the M6 Gran Coupe.

We’ve already given the RS7 a thorough shakedown in Europe, and we came away quite impressed with just how stunning this Audi is, both to drive and to look at. Now that we’ve got a price to go along with the performance and style, this Audi is even more appealing – in our high-dollar dreams, anyway. Take a look at a short video from Audi, as well as the official press blast, below.

Light Bars Make Everything Better: BMW Adds M6 Gran Coupe to Roster of MotoGP Safety Cars

By Alexander Stoklosa

As BMW enters its 15th season as the official car of MotoGP, it’s gifting the series’ safety-car fleet a brand-spanking-new M6 Gran Coupe. As the latest M car to hit consumers, the M6 Gran Coupe is a natural fit for safety-car duty. Besides, the burliest Gran Coupe looks unbelievably cool even before BMW adds a light bar, so there’s that.

The M6 Gran Coupe safety car gets the typical complement of doo-dads relevant to making it both highly visible and, er, safer. There’s a unique front fascia adapted to accomodate a pair of LED driving light arrays, black wheels, black grilles and fender vents, an Akrapovic exhaust system, Recaro racing seats, and of course, a roof-mounted light bar. The mostly white M6 Gran Coupe gets further amped up with an M-signature blue, purple, and red stripe job. Serving alongside the Gran Coupe is an M6 coupe introduced for last season and an M5; there’s also an M3 coupe for the safety officer, two M550d xDrive Touring (wagon!) medical cars, and two S1000RR HP4 safety bikes.

The M6 Gran Coupe safety car made its debut at last weekend’s MotoGP season opener in Qatar. But if you’re determined to see this particular fleet of M-badged safety vehicles in the metal, the next stop on this season’s MotoGP calendar is the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, later this month.

BMW’s 2014 6-series Lineup Receives a Few Performance Upgrades and a Special Edition

By John Lamm

BMW's 6 Series for 2014: can we hear a cheer for all-wheel drive, carbon ceramic brakes and a 6-speed manual?

There was already much to like about BMW’s latest-generation 6-series, and for 2014, the Bavarians have added a special-edition 6er and more of the equipment we love. While the car’s primary objective has been cruising the likes of Newport Beach, South Beach, and Greenwich in style, BMW has added another M-branded 6-series to the lineup for 2014 in the M6 Gran Coupe. But the new-for-2014 performance goodies don’t end there. The brand now offers all three M6s—Gran Coupe, coupe, and convertible—with a homegrown six-speed manual and carbon-ceramic brakes.A no-cost option over the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, the manual will provide automatic rev matching on downshifts so long as the car’s drive-mode selector is set to Efficient or Sport. Select Sport Plus and you’ll be left to match revs yourself. In addition to their well-documented stopping power, the carbon-ceramic brakes knock off 42.8 pounds of unsprung weight and, to impress the neighbors, have gold-painted calipers.

But if exclusivity, rather than outright performance, is what will impress the neighbors, you might consider the Frozen Brilliant White edition 650i convertible. Just 100 of these special editions will be made. The name would refer, of course, to the matte exterior finish, while the side-mirror caps, the grille, and the 20-inch aluminum-wheel accents are done in matte Frozen Black, while the ragtop is just black. The Nappa leather interior also is finished in black, and accented by Gray Poplar wood trim. The Frozen Brilliant White edition will be the first BMW stateside to arrive with the brand’s Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster, which sees instrumentation alter “personalities” based on which drive mode is selected. There’s the choice of sDrive rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, with xDrive adding the Cold Weather package, which includes heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel. Included in all 100 editions are the Executive and M Sport packages, the latter not making this a full M6, but adding items like an aero kit and an M steering wheel. Exclusivity, as is said, comes at a price, and the price for this one-of-100 650i convertible is $106,695, or $110,095 for xDrive models.

Report: BMW says yes to 1 Series M successor, no to M6 Gran Coupe with xDrive

By Steven J. Ewing

BMW 1 Series M Coupe

Filed under:

If you’re anything like us, the first half of that headline made you smile. The BMW 1 Series M Coupe was, without a doubt, one of our favorite cars from the past few years, and according to a BMW Blog interview, Dr. Friedrich Nitschke, head of the company’s M division, has confirmed that a successor is in the works.

“We haven’t made a decision yet, but the 1M coupe was so successful, that in my opinion, I am absolutely sure we will build a successor,” Nitschke told BMW Blog. Currently, BMW only offers the M135i version of the new 1 Series hatch in Europe, which Nitschke says is “not a pure M car.”

Moving elsewhere in the M range, BMW Blog asked about the M6 Gran Coupe that recently debuted at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. The obvious competitors for this car will be higher-power versions of the Porsche Panamera and Audi RS7, but while both of those offer all-wheel drive, the M6 only sends power to its rear wheels.

“We will not bring an all-wheel drive, only a rear-wheel drive,” Nitschke said in the interview. The main reason is that adding AWD means additional weight has to be tacked on, and even so, the BMW executives said that the car was developed to have specific handling and steering characteristics common to a rear-wheel-drive car. “I think it’s perfect the way it is,” Nitschke stated.

Pre-Show Tour Of BMW’s Detroit Auto Show Booth: Video

By Kurt Ernst

One of the best perks of writing about cars is getting into auto shows before the general public. If you’ve even been to a big auto show in a major city to actually research a specific car, you know what a hassle it is to wait behind a gaggle of 8 year-olds, who are gleefully tearing apart the interior of the car you’re actually shopping for, as dad documents the carnage with a camera for the relatives to laugh at. It’s funny, because it isn’t HIS car the kids are wrecking.

In this short video, Horatiu Boeriu of BMW Blog takes us behind the scenes at BMW’s Detroit Auto Show booth. Key highlights include a restyled Z4 (which looks hot in Valencia Orange with a black roof), the M6 Gran Coupe and the new 4 Series coupe. If you’re wondering exactly what the 4 Series is, it’s just a new naming convention from BMW. Moving forward, the 3 Series name will be used on sedans and station wagons, while the 4 Series name will be used on coupes and convertibles. The 4 Series coupe, then, is just the new 3 Series coupe with a more descriptive name.

While BMW stops short of saying the 4 Series will come in an xDrive version, it’s logical and safe to assume such a car will follow the rear-drive version to market. The same applies to the use of in-line six-cylinder engines instead of just turbocharged fours; by pointing out that the hood length allows for the use of the larger engine, BMW is telling us to expect it. As for design, expect the production 4 Series models to closely match the styling of the concept seen here.
