Washington Redskins’ name discussed by Congress

By Rosenthal, Gregg

The Washington Redskins’ team name has been the subject of a continuing debate this offseason. On Wednesday it even became a Congressional matter.

Discussion about the appropriateness of the Washington Redskins‘ team name continues to simmer this offseason. It reached the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday.

Eni F.H. Faleomavaega, American Samoa’s non-voting delegate to the House, made a speech decrying the name.

“Mr. Speaker, it’s time the National Football League and the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, face the reality that the continued use of the word ‘Redskin’ is unacceptable. It is a racist, derogatory term, and patently offensive to Native Americans.” Faleomavega said, via The Washington Post. “The Native American community has spent millions of dollars over the past two decades trying earnestly to fight the racism that is perpetuated by this slur.

“The fact that the NFL and Commissioner Goodell continue to deny this is a shameful treatment of the mistreatment of Native Americans for so many years. It is quite obvious that once the American public understands why ‘Redskins‘ is so offensive, it will know that the word should never be used again.”

The entire speech can be seen here. Faleomavaega was one of 10 members of Congress to send a letter to Goodell and Redskins owner Dan Snyder asking for change. Goodell responded with a letter that defended the use of the name.

Snyder said this offseason that he would “never” change the team’s name, although the Redskins have indicated some willingness to hear what their fans think.

According to Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Bog, the Redskins this week sent out an online survey that touched on a number of topics, including the team’s name. It asked fans if the Redskins should change their name and followed up with a few more questions on the topic.

It’s still hard to imagine the Redskins changing their name anytime soon, but the questions from the team show a degree of open thinking on the topic. It’s a topic that hasn’t gone away this year, even if the team would prefer it did.

Offensiveness, Obscenity & the Washington Redskins

By Adam Thierer, Contributor

It is only a matter of time before the Washington Redskins change their team name. Public pressure is growing on the popular professional football franchise to drop a nickname many regard as a derogatory racial slur against Native Americans. Eventually that pressure will grow intense enough that team owner Daniel Snyder will be forced to cave and make a switch. A group of former Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officials and other regulatory advocates is trying to expedite that process by pressuring Snyder with the threat that the federal regulatory agency could take action if he doesn’t change the team’s name voluntarily. Despite the best of intentions, the suggestion that the FCC should treat racially sensitive terms or team names as criminal speech is misguided both as a matter of law and in terms of its implications for freedom of speech more generally. …read more

Weekly Wrap Up: “This is Your Victory”

By Christopher Sponn

Watch the West Wing Week here.

Violence Against Women Act: On Thursday, President Obama signed the Violence against Women Act of 2013, which provides resources for thousands of victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. The renewed version of the law extends to protect LGBT victims, immigrants, Native Americans and victims of sex-trafficking. The act will ensure victims and survivors will have the resources they need. With survivors and advocates standing behind him President Obama recognized the significance of the day:

But everybody on this stage worked extraordinarily hard. Most of all, though, this is your day. This is the day of the advocates; the day of the survivors. This is your victory.

First Cabinet Meeting: On Monday, President Obama opened the 17th Cabinet meeting of his presidency and the first of the new term. The President welcomed to the table his newest cabinet members, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. In his remarks, President Obama shared his deep concerns of the harmful and automatic budget cuts known as the sequester and advocated for bipartisan solutions so Americans can be poised for progress:

So one of the things that I’ve instructed not just my White House but every agency is to make sure that, regardless of some of the challenges that they may face because of sequestration, we’re not going to stop working on behalf of the American people to make sure that we’re doing everything we can to continue to grow this economy and improve people’s prospects.

Falklands Wolf DNA Helps Explain How Extinct Predator Reached Remote Islands

By The Huffington Post News Editors

By: Charles Choi, LiveScience Contributor
Published: 03/05/2013 11:40 AM EST on LiveScience

The mystery surrounding the origin of a wolflike predator that once lived near Antarctica — a puzzle that stumped even Charles Darwin — has now been solved, researchers say.

The extinct carnivore apparently made its way to islands hundreds of miles from the nearest continent by crossing the frozen sea thousands of years ago, scientists explained.

The reddish coyote-sized Falkland Islands wolf was the only mammal native to the Falkland Islands far off the east coast of Argentina. The foxlike predator lived on seals, penguins and sea birds until hunters exterminated it in 1876.

The existence of the Falklands wolf perplexed Darwin when he first encountered it in 1834. “How did this great big carnivore arrive to a set of islands 460 kilometers (285 miles) from the nearest mainland when no other terrestrial mammal did?” asked researcher Alan Cooper, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia. “If it came by a land bridge, then the islands should’ve been covered with rodents as well, since South America is rodent central.”

“It was incredibly tame — it swam out to meet sailors, wagging its tail,” Cooper told LiveScience. “That led to suggestions that it was a semi-domesticated dog that Native Americans took out while hunting, explaining how it got to the Falklands when there were no other mammals there.” [Gallery: Photos Reveal Amazing Wolves]

However, past analysis of DNA from museum specimens of the Falklands wolf, including one that Darwin collected, revealed it was not a dog after all. Instead, its nearest living ancestor was the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) from the South American savannas, an odd predator resembling a red fox with almost stiltlike legs.

To help solve the mystery of how the Falklands wolf colonized the islands, Cooper and his colleagues compared its DNA with remains of what seemed like its closest extinct mainland relative, Dusicyon avus. This carnivore is similar to the Falklands wolf, save for smaller teeth and jaws.

The analysis suggested the Falklands wolf did not become isolated from its mainland cousins until about 16,000 years ago, before scientists think humans arrived this far south in South America. This time coincided with the last height of the ice age, when glaciers covered large portions of the planet.

“The sea levels around the world were really low then, since all the water was frozen onto icecaps — in fact, they were about 130 meters (425 feet) lower than currently,” Cooper said.

The researchers then sleuthed through past research and found references to now-underwater terraces of rock off the coast of Argentina that would have created a narrow, shallow marine strait back when sea levels were lower. “This strait would’ve been only 20 to 30 kilometers (12 to 18 miles) wide, but when it was frozen over during really cold periods, the Falklands wolf could’ve effectively walked across …read more

Shards of south Louisiana's ancient history found

By BronxKnight

An archaeological project arising out of Hurricane Katrina‘s floods has turned up bits of pottery fired about 1,300 years before the first French colonists slogged into south Louisiana swamps.

The project also has turned up artifacts from later Native Americans, Spanish and American fortifications, as well as a hotel and amusement park near the mouth of Bayou St. John, once an important route from Lake Pontchartrain to New Orleans….

Immigration: So What Exactly Is It Again That We Are Trying To Fix? (Part 1)

By Larry Craig

Illigal Aliens SC Immigration: So what exactly is it again that we are trying to fix? (Part 1)

If you want to fix something, you first have to know what it is supposed to look like when it’s not broken. That goes for immigration as well.

But I wouldn’t call what is going on now fixing anything. They are trying to clean up a mess years in the making through neglect, political expediency, and willful disregard of the laws of the land. That same moral rebellion that was energized when the courts found religious and moral instruction and prayer and talk about God not proper in public schools and then later in public life at all found it hard to keep a lot of laws. It turned a blind eye to illegal immigration, probably because it was easy to exploit people with secrets to hide; and besides, if we threw off all those restraining personal rules, why should we strictly enforce rules on others, especially if no one is being hurt?

The real problem with immigration is that a rule (the 14th Amendment) made after the Civil War to give freed black slaves citizenship was transformed into free citizenship for anyone who could be born within our borders by any means. Now our politicians know, or should know, that this isn’t really the case because the children born here of foreign diplomats aren’t given citizenship. And even the Native Americans didn’t receive citizenship until the next century with an act of Congress.

So to say that children born here to illegal immigrants automatically become citizens is an abuse of our Constitution, wishful thinking, and an act of pandering to Hispanic voters. This is like telling people it is wrong to rob banks; but if you do, you can keep the money. Just pay taxes on it, of course.

We are providing a strong incentive for people to come here by whatever means because it is worth the risks they take to give their children the privileges of citizenship. That’s why people rob banks. They weigh the risks against the potential benefits and find it worth it.

And why do I get the impression that the major impetus behind immigration ‘reform’ today is that the Democrats feel they will have a lock on the votes from all these new voters? And why would that be? I would venture to say that the mere matter of not being citizens is not a stumbling block to Democrats for getting immigrants to vote. This is certainly the main reason they oppose voter ID laws.

What is being touted as immigration reform is really nothing of the sort. The children of illegals, brought here through no fault of their own, are given legal status. But then who will have the heart, or the gall, to send their parents back to their country of origin? So the parents get a pass as well.

This ‘reform’ will only try to clean up the mess of years of intentional indifference, only to let the problem reoccur down the road. I don’t believe them if or when they say this will be different. …read more

Northwestern to probe founder Evans and Sand Creek Massacre

By hnn

Responding to pressure from a student alliance, Northwestern University has established a committee to investigate the history of John Evans, a university founder connected to one of the worst massacres of Native Americans in the country’s history.

The committee will consist of four Northwestern faculty members and three additional professors hailing from Yale University, the University of Illinois and the University of Arkansas.

John Evans — the namesake of the city of Evanston — was territorial governor of Colorado in 1864 when a militia of about 700 men attacked a temporary village of Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho people at Sand Creek. According to the National Park Service, the soldiers killed 165 to 200 Native Americans, about two-thirds of them women, children and elderly….

HUFFPOST HILL – Chuck Grassley’s Trail Of Fears

By The Huffington Post News Editors

With the sequester imminent and no substantial progress made, conservatives took a break from stockpiling guns and switched to stockpiling canned goods. Asked about running for reelection, Harry Reid replied, “Sure, why not?” which is an OK answer if someone offers you half a Twix. And a House member is inviting his colleagues to “Grab free donuts and coffee before Obama grabs your gun!” Attention FBI: All the members of Congress who come to work ARMED will be gathered in the same room soon. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday, February 21st, 2013:

OPPOSITION POLS SPEAK TO ONE ANOTHER, WASHINGTON OVERJOYED – “With just more than a week before automatic spending cuts hit, President Barack Obama called Speaker John A. Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday morning in what Republicans say were his first substantive conversations with the GOP leaders this year. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney and Republican aides declined to comment on the substance of the conversations — usually a good sign in Washington — even as they continued to trade talking points over who is to blame for the sequester and who is holding the military and other government programs hostage for political advantage.” [Roll Call]

CHUCK GRASSLEY AFRAID OF NATIVE AMERICAN COURTS – Chuck Grassley, who is already the closest thing Congress has to a crotchety 1860s homesteader, does not trust America’s indigenous population. Jen Bendery: “Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) didn’t vote for the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization bill when it passed the Senate last week. And on Wednesday, he gave a blunt reason why: he doesn’t think tribal courts are capable of giving a fair trial to non-Native Americans. Grassley was holding a town hall meeting in Indianola, Iowa, when a constituent asked him about his VAWA vote. Think Progress reported on the meeting and posted a video of Grassley’s response, during which he argued that, since reservations are made up of Native Americans, those jurists wouldn’t be fair to a non-Native American. ‘If you have a jury, the jury is supposed to be a reflection of society,’ Grassley said. ‘Under the laws of our land, you’ve got to have a jury that is a reflection of society as a whole, and on an Indian reservation, it’s going to be made up of Indians, right? So the non-Indian doesn’t get a fair trial.’” [HuffPost]

Is 'Washington Redskins' An Offensive Name? Here Are Some Potential Replacements

By Monte Burke, Forbes Staff

So maybe you’ve heard there has recently been an uproar about the name of the NFL’s Washington Redskins. DC mayor, Vincent Gray, said in January that he’d like for the team to move back to the district, but that the name was “a lightning rod.” (He’s recently backpedaled a bit.) This controversy seems to pop up every once in a while, mainly because the term “redskin” is unequivocally derogatory to Native Americans. The team decided to respond recently to the hubbub this time in a roundabout way, pointing out the number of high schools that also use the name, in articles posted on its website. …read more

Landowner trying to sell portion of Wounded Knee

By Jonathan_So

One of the country’s poorest Native American tribes wants to buy a historically significant piece of land where 300 of their ancestors were killed, but tribal leaders say the nearly $4 million price tag for a property appraised at less than $7,000 is just too much.

James Czywczynski is trying to sell a 40-acre fraction of the Wounded Knee National Historic Landmark on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The land sits adjacent to a gravesite where about 150 of the 300 Lakota men, women and children killed by the 7th Cavalry in 1890 are buried.

Czywczynski, whose family has owned the property since 1968, recently gave the tribe an ultimatum: purchase the land for $3.9 million or he will open up bidding to non-Native Americans. He said he has been trying to sell the land to the tribe for years…

Smithsonian American Indian museum tackles racist stereotypes, mascots in American sports

By hnn

WASHINGTON — The Washington Redskins’ team name has been the subject of legal battles, political debate and now will be part of a scholarly discussion at the Smithsonian about the use of Native American mascots and nicknames in American sports.

The National Museum of the American Indian will host a daylong symposium Thursday entitled “Racist Stereotypes and Cultural Appropriation in American Sports.” Scholars, sports writers and Native Americans will gather for the public discussion.

The Redskins’ name, perhaps the most visible, has been the subject of ongoing debate. As recently as Tuesday night, Washington Mayor Vincent Gray specifically avoided saying the name of Washington’s NFL franchise in his State of the District speech and instead referred to “our Washington football team.”…

Native American connection to 40,000 year old human in northwest China

By hnn

Detailed examination of samples of ancient DNA has revealed the genetic makeup of humans living circa 40,000 years ago in an area near what is now Beijing in China.

An international team of researchers including Svante Pääbo and Qiaomei Fu of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, have sequenced nuclear and mitochondrial DNA extracted from the leg of an early modern human from Tianyuan Cave near Beijing.

Analyses of DNA recovered from the leg bones showed that the Tianyuan human shared a common origin with present-day Asians and Native Americans. In addition, the researchers found the proportion of Neanderthal and Denisovan-DNA in this early modern human is no higher than in current populations living in this region today….

Filmmaker Labels Damon Film “Classic Propaganda”

By B. Christopher Agee

Matt Damon SC Filmmaker labels Damon film Classic propaganda

Judging by his ignorant and radical leftist rants on subjects such as public education, it’s probably no surprise Matt Damon opposes hydraulic fracturing, the highly effective process of extracting natural gas that some critics say is environmentally unfriendly.

Damon’s latest politically-charged movie, though, has prompted one of his peers to call him “a liar” for claiming it isn’t an outlet for his own ideological views.

Promised Land,” co-written by Damon, is “political from the beginning to the very end” and perpetuates the left’s misinformation about the process commonly known as “fracking,” said director Phelim McAleer. The filmmaker called the move “classic propaganda.”

McAleer’s own movie “FrackNation” presents the positive side of fracking, and he is vocal in his criticism of Damon’s portrayal of the drilling method.

Dispelling the leftist claim that fracking leads to contaminated water supplies, McAleer points to historical data that far predates any such drilling.

“In America hundreds of years ago, Native Americans named three different locations ‘Burning Springs,’” he said. “Quite simply, this is because of the naturally occurring gases – like methane – that are found beneath the earth’s surface with water.”

He went on to say that “there is no evidence that suggests that fracking has led to an increase in this phenomenon.”

A billboard campaign McAleer began in New York addresses the actor/activist directly, stating, “Matt Damon: the water has been on fire since 1669.”

When news broke that the United Arab Emirates, an influential member of OPECpartially funded the film, Damon’s already shaky credibility took yet another serious blow.

Our Bill Of Rights And The New Witch Hunt

By AK Fielding

bill of rights 4827 Our Bill of Rights And the New Witch Hunt

On a cold night of March 1692, all was quiet except the chilling moans escaping from a house belonging to the village minister, Samuel Parris, of Salem Village in Massachusetts.  In a back room of the house, a nine-year-old girl clutched her throat and began spinning around as if in a trance.  Elizabeth Parris then flung her frail body on the hard wood floor in a fit of passion.  Another young girl, Elizabeth’s eleven-year-old cousin Abigail Williams, followed suit; and soon, both girls were screaming hysterically.  They fought and clawed the air as if fighting against a supernatural beast.  The floorboards beneath their small bodies creaked, and the noise echoed throughout the small house.  Elizabeth’s father called for the village physician immediately.  After much deliberation, the doctor pronounced that the girls were suffering from “bewitchment.”  Soon, the two girls accused other villagers of witchcraft; and for the next several months, the small New England community was in an uproar.

From June through September of 1692, the Salem Witch Trials condemned hundreds of people as witches.  The accused were men, women, and children and included people from surrounding neighborhoods.  Once the fervor against the “witches” began, there was no end to the accusations.  People from all levels of society were accused and tried as witches, including the Governor’s wife.  At least nineteen condemned men and women died from hanging.  Other witches either died in jail or lived the duration of their lives as social outcasts-always afraid of the authorities.

No one explanation provides the answer to why the Salem Witch Trials reached such a great height.  Indeed, the Salem Witch Trials remain curious even today because of the magnitude of people who were accused, convicted, and executed for it.  Historians have stated economic, social, and frontier troubles with Native Americans and petty jealousies as a few of the reasons why so many accusations arose.  Whatever the cause(s), one thing is certain: many innocent people lost their lives because of the hysterics prompted at the behest of a few.

As with those hunting for witches in 1692, today, the liberals are also looking for “witches.”  The unfortunate and inhumane killing of innocent children in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012 has renewed the liberals’ taste for vengeance.  Unfortunately, criminals are not the focus of their wrath, but it is the Bill of Rights.  Liberals feel that the law needs to be “reformed.”  Indeed, they would like to do away with the Bill of Rights completely if at all possible.  They are not interested in finding true solutions that work to keep such tragedies from recurring; instead, their ultimate goal is the destruction of our liberties as American citizens.  To achieve this goal, they have shamelessly used the tragedy of the Newtown shooting to promote their own political agenda:  banishing the Second Amendment altogether.  Their argument is that by banning guns, there will never be another tragedy in America.

Indeed, their argument would serve well if only it made any sense.  In most states, law-abiding citizens who own guns must first pass a thorough background investigation and fingerprinting/ identification process before they can acquire any weapons.  Some states require firearms safety training before they issue permits.  Suffice it to say, those people who own guns legally must meet state standards (which differ widely by individual states) to own guns.  For someone to go through the stringent process of becoming a gun owner only for the sake of going on a shooting spree seems illogical to say the least.  Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule; but most law-abiding citizens are aware of the risk they take if they use their guns to hurt innocent people.

Typically, people who own guns legally do so for protection, recreation, or mere nostalgia.  If anything, many of these law-abiding citizens have used their weapons to defend themselves and even protect others.  A 2012 study performed by Clayton E. Cramer and David Burnett for the Cato Institute in Washington D.C. shows several true examples of law-abiding citizens who used their guns for self-defense purposes.

The “right to bear arms” is a fundamental right given to every American citizen.  George Washington once said:  “The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference – they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.”  Yet, liberals have long forsaken Washington and are now working diligently to eradicate the Bill of Rights, too.  Criminals will continue to find ways to get guns as they do even now with the current laws in place.  If anything, by banning guns, the government will only further assist criminals in attacking innocent people who will have no way to protect themselves from the criminals’  dastardly deeds.  Consider what a difference it would have made on September 11, 2001 if any American citizen on Flights American 11, United 175, American 77, and United 93 had carried legally-obtained guns.  What liberals don’t seem to understand is that those who want to commit a crime by definition are not law-abiding individuals to begin with.  As such, to expect such people to honor “reformed” laws that ban guns altogether is foolhardy.  The only thing these “reforms” will bring about is the further destruction of American society.

As with the Salem Witch Trials and September 11, 2001, the Newtown shooting has become an infamous part of American history.  All of us will remember it forever.  It is a disgrace for the liberals to suggest that only they feel the pain for the loss of those innocent lives.  It is equally shameful for them to use the tragedy of the Newtown shooting as a way to punish law-abiding American citizens by eradicating our constitutional rights.  Laws need to be “reformed”, but not to hurt those who abide by them.  September 11, 2001 united all Americans regardless of their personal beliefs; should not the Newtown tragedy do the same?
