Dennis Rodman planning to 'have some fun' with North Korea's Kim Jong Un in August

North Korea‘s increasing hostility toward the rest of the world doesn’t seem to faze dictator Kim Jong Un‘s newest best friend Dennis Rodman, who reiterated his plans to return to the communist nation in August.

The former U.S. basketball star said at a charity event in Miami Beach over the weekend that he’s keeping plans to visit North Korea again in late summer to have “fun” with the country’s dictator, the website “Gossip Extra” reported.

“I’m going back August 1,” he told the website. “We have no plans really, as far as what we’re going to do over there, but we’ll just hang and have some fun!”

Rodman raised eyebrows when he became the first American to meet the reclusive young leader in a visit to Pyongyang in February.

Weeks after the controversial visit, Rodman, 51, described Kim as a friend.

“I don’t condone what he does, but he’s my friend,” Rodman said in a March interview with North Dakota’s KXJB. Rodman continued to say he will be “vacationing” with Kim in August.

Rodman’s remarks come amid rising tensions between North Korea and the United States, after the Asian nation threatened to launch a preemptive nuclear attack on the U.S. that would engulf Washington in a “sea of fire.”

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry last week wrapped up a tour to coordinate Washington’s response with Beijing, North Korea‘s most important ally, as well as with Seoul and Tokyo.

In Seoul, South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin told a parliamentary committee Monday that North Korea still appeared poised to launch a missile from its east coast, though he declined to disclose the source of his information.

Kerry warned North Korea not to conduct a missile test, saying it would be provocation that “will raise people’s temperatures” and further isolate the country and its impoverished people. He said Sunday that the U.S. was “prepared to reach out,” but that Pyongyang must first bring down tensions and honor previous agreements.

KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. Announces Positive Interim Results from Open-Label Study of ATX-101 in the Reduction of Unwanted Submental Fat (SMF) or “Double Chin”

Results presented at 2013 American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Late Breaking Research Symposium

MIAMI BEACH, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. (NAS: KYTH) today announced positive interim results from a Phase IIIb, multi-center, open-label study (ATX-101-11-26) to evaluate the safety and efficacy of ATX-101, an investigational injectable drug for the reduction of unwanted submental fat (SMF), commonly known as double chin. The results, presented at the Late Breaking Research Symposium at the 71st American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, Fla., found that ATX-101 is well-tolerated and may be effective in reducing SMF by both clinician and patient reported outcome measures. The ATX-101 global clinical development program has enrolled more than 2,500 total patients, of which more than 1,500 have been treated with ATX-101.

“In my practice, patients often request a non-surgical way to treat their submental fat, or undesirable double chin,” said investigator Susan Weinkle, MD, FAAD, a board certified dermatologist and affiliate clinical professor at the University of South Florida. “For these patients, double chin is often resistant to diet and exercise. The results of this study suggest that microinjections of ATX-101 can reduce submental fat without worsening skin laxity.”

ATX-101 is a proprietary, synthetically-derived formulation of deoxycholic acid (DCA), a naturally-occurring molecule found in the body that aids in fat metabolism. In this open-label Phase IIIb study, interim results three months after the last ATX-101 treatment found:

  • Reduction of submental fat
    • 87 percent of patients achieved at least a one-grade improvement from baseline on the Clinician-Reported Submental Fat Rating Scale (CR-SMFRS)
    • Similarly, 83 percent of patients achieved at least a one-grade improvement on the Patient-Reported Submental Fat Rating Scale (PR-SMFRS)
  • 96 percent of patients had unchanged or improved skin laxity based on the clinician rated Submental Skin Laxity Grading Scale (SMSLG)
  • 95 percent of patients were satisfied with treatment based on the Global Post Treatment Satisfaction Scale
  • Adverse events were of mild to moderate intensity, transient and primarily associated with the treatment area

Woman, 22, sought in Vegas Strip shooting, crash

A 22-year-old Miami woman with a history of prostitution arrests was identified Tuesday as a person of interest in a Las Vegas Strip shooting that triggered a spectacular fiery crash and left three people dead.

Police said Tineesha Lashun Howard was in a black SUV with Ammar Harris last week when he fired shots into a Maserati sports car at a self-promoted rapper who investigators say argued with Harris minutes earlier in the valet area of a glassy Strip resort.

Maserati driver Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr., 27, was mortally wounded before the sports car accelerated and slammed into a taxi that burst into flames — killing the cab driver and his passenger, a businesswoman from Washington state.

Colleagues of the taxi driver posted a $35,000 reward Tuesday for information leading to the arrest of Harris, a 26-year-old felon whom police last year accused of being a panderer.

“We lost one of our own in cab driver Michael Boldon,” said Brent Bell, president of Whittlesea Bell Corp. and the trustee of a trust fund established to pay the reward.

Bell called the death of Sandra Sutton-Wasmund of Maple Valley, Wash., “no less tragic,” and said taxi drivers’ hearts also went out to Cherry’s family in Oakland, Calif.

Investigators have said there were several people in the black Range Rover SUV when the shots rang out. They have only identified Harris and Howard.

Police released several photos of the two together and said Howard also uses the name Yenesis Alfonzo.

A police statement said Howard has been arrested multiple times on charges including prostitution, trespassing, possession of a stolen vehicle and grand larceny. It wasn’t immediately known if those arrests led to convictions.

Police said Howard was considered missing and possibly in danger.

Harris, who was convicted in South Carolina in 2004 of felony possession with intent to sell a stolen pistol and convicted in Atlanta of a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge, is sought in Las Vegas on three murder charges.

Police have said they won’t rest until he is in custody.

“We are confident we know what happened and how,” Las Vegas police homicide Lt. Ray Steiber said Tuesday of the shooting and six-vehicle crash. “All this is about now is locating him and arresting him.”

Police previously released a photo of Harris taken after his arrest last year in Las Vegas in a 2010 prostitution case using the name Ammar Asim Faruq Harris. He was charged with robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping and coercion with a weapon, and police sought charges of pandering by force and felon in possession of concealed weapon charges. Court records show that case was dismissed last June.

Ads with Harris’ photo also were posted Monday on billboards along major southern Nevada freeways.

The image shows Harris with tattoos on his right cheek and words on his neck above an image that appeared to depict an owl with blackened eyes. Police said Harris should be considered armed and dangerous.

Public records show Harris previously lived in South Carolina and Georgia, and told police when he was arrested in Miami Beach last December that …read more

Las Vegas police identify suspect, issue arrest warrant in Strip shooting

Police said Monday they have a warrant for a 26-year-old ex-convict identified as the prime suspect in a shooting and fiery crash that killed three people last week on the Las Vegas Strip.

“We can say with certainty that Ammar Harris is the suspect who fired the fatal shots,” Las Vegas police Capt. Chris Jones told reporters at an afternoon update about a manhunt that he said would be advertised on southern Nevada billboards.

Police previously released a photo of Harris taken after his arrest last year in Las Vegas in a 2010 prostitution case. It showed Harris with tattoos on his right cheek and words on his neck above an image that appeared to depict an owl with blackened eyes. Jones said Harris should be considered armed and dangerous.

Jones said investigators were looking everywhere Harris had lived in the past. He wasn’t specific.

Police also warned anyone aware of his location or who may be assisting Harris ‘in any way’ that he will be prosecuted.

“If Mr. Harris is listening, I urge him to surrender and make himself available to the criminal justice system where he will be afforded all the rights that anybody would be afforded,” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, said, according to Fox5Vegas.com.

Public records show that Harris previously lived in South Carolina and Georgia, and told a police officer when he was arrested in Miami Beach last December that he had lived in Florida for about a year.

Harris was convicted in 2004 in Orangeburg, S.C., of felony possession with intent to sell a stolen pistol, Jones said. The conviction was not in California, as police said earlier.

Harris used the name Ammar Asim Faruq Harris when he was arrested last May in Las Vegas in the June 2010 case. He was charged with robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping and coercion with a weapon.

Las Vegas police also sought pandering by force and ex-felon in possession of concealed weapon charges stemming from allegations that Harris was a pimp and attacked a woman.

Court records show the case was dismissed last June. The prosecutor and a public defender who handled the case didn’t immediately respond to messages Monday.

In Miami Beach, Harris was arrested Dec. 7 after he was accused of driving a silver 2006 Hummer H3 the wrong way on a congested street at 2 a.m. The arresting officer said Harris produced a Florida state identification card and provided a Miami address. The status of the case in Miami-Dade courts was unclear Monday.

In Atlanta, Harris was arrested in June 2004 on a felony marijuana possession with intent to distribute charge. According to court records, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge and was sentenced to three months in jail.

Fulton County jail records show Harris spent about two weeks in jail in February 2008 after a misdemeanor battery arrest. The outcome of that case was not immediately clear Monday.

In Las Vegas, investigators say Harris was driving a black Range Rover SUV when he fired shots into a Maserati before dawn Thursday, killing an aspiring …read more

Woman Dies After Miami Beach Dive Trip Goes Wrong (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A woman died Sunday while diving with a Miami Beach scuba company, the same that reportedly left two divers stranded in open water in October 2011.

The tourist was Chinese, didn’t speak English, and appeared nervous before the dive, NBC 6 reports. Although everyone was paired up with a diving buddy, those aboard said the woman must have dived alone and panicked.

When they found her after a two-hour search, her lifeless body was wearing the weight belt but no other scuba equipment.

Russian lawmaker quits parliament in property row

A senior lawmaker from the pro-Kremlin party has resigned his seat in parliament after an anti-corruption campaigner alleged that he owns properties in Florida worth more than $2 million.

Vladimir Pekhtin, chairman of the State Duma‘s ethics committee, announced his resignation at a parliament session on Wednesday, saying that he does so in order to protect his party from the scandal.

Copies of deeds and other legal documents revealed by Russian anti-corruption crusader Alexei Navalny indicated that Pekhtin together with his son own two condos in Miami Beach and a villa in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Pekhtin has denied owning the property although he admitted that his signatures on the deeds were genuine. Last week he told Izvestia daily that he “owns practically no property abroad.”

3 charged in smuggling endangered rhino horns

Three people have been charged with participating in an international smuggling ring that traffics in the horns of endangered black rhinos.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Justice Department have launched “Operation Crash” using undercover agents and electronic surveillance in an effort to stop the black market trade in rhino horns, which has led to poaching and has reduced the world’s rhino population by more than 90 percent since 1970. The operation is named after the term for a rhino herd.

This week, federal grand juries in Newark, N.J., and Miami indicted Zhifei Li, a 28-year-old Chinese national, for alleged smuggling. He allegedly conspired to smuggle more than 20 raw rhinoceros horns from the U.S. to Hong Kong in 2011 and 2012. Shusen Wei was charged with offering to bribe a federal agent in the Li case. In New York, a third man, Qing Wang, was charged Wednesday for allegedly smuggling libation cups carved from rhinoceros horns from New York to Li via Hong Kong.

According to documents unsealed Wednesday, Wang was one of several who purchased items in the United States for Li. In China, there is a centuries-old traditional belief that drinking from the intricately carved rhinoceros horn cups brings good health. Such carvings are prized by collectors. Wang also is alleged to have smuggled ivory carvings to Li in Hong Kong.

According to an indictment in Newark on Monday, Li wired hundreds of thousands of dollars over at least a year to a co-conspirator in the United States to buy rhinoceros horns. Li’s co-conspirator smuggled the rhino horns in porcelain vases and mailed them to Hong Kong and China to a person other than Li to evade detection by U.S. officials. Li was arrested in January on charges previously filed in New Jersey.

Li also was indicted Tuesday in Miami on wildlife trafficking and smuggling charges. According to court records and government statements in court, shortly after arriving in Florida in January 2013 for the Original Miami Beach Antique Show, Li purchased two endangered black rhinoceros horns from an undercover U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service agent in a Miami Beach hotel room for $59,000. Li asked if the undercover officer could procure additional horns and mail them to his company in Hong Kong.

Also arrested on a related criminal complaint in Miami was Shusen Wei, a Chinese business executive, who also attended the antique show and shared a hotel room with Li. According to court documents in Miami, Wei admitted to agents after Li’s arrest that he knew about Li’s smuggling and had purchased rhinoceros carvings from Li that apparently had been smuggled from the United States.

After being served with a grand jury subpoena to appear in New Jersey, Wei left Miami for New York en route to China. Prior to leaving Miami, Wei allegedly asked an undercover informant to invite a Fish and Wildlife Service agent to dinner in Miami and offer her as much as $10,000 to assist Li, according to court documents. After a series of recorded phone calls …read more

Report: Rick Ross crashes Rolls-Royce in drive-by attempt [w/video]

By Seyth Miersma

Rap star and exotic-car enthusiast, Rick Ross, had a double-close call on Monday morning, escaping harm in what appears to be an attempted drive-by shooting.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police, Ross was driving his 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost (pictured) with his girlfriend, Shateria Moragne-el, as a passenger at 5:00 AM on Monday. An unnamed gunman in another vehicle opened fire on Ross’ car, causing the rapper to turn a corner, lose control of the vehicle and eventually crash into the wall of an apartment complex. Neither Ross nor Moragne-el was injured, despite reports that “dozens” of ammo casings were found at the crime scene.

Ross had been out celebrating his birthday on Sunday night; at nearby restaurant Floridian and a club called LIV in Miami Beach. Reports indicate that the restaurant was also the target of gunfire – some 15 shots that “sounded like they came from a high-powered rifle.”
