HomeAway Forges Strong Relationship with Timeshare Industry through Three New Distribution Partnerships

AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)– HomeAway, Inc. (NAS: AWAY) , the world’s leading online marketplace of vacation rentals, today announces a distribution partnership with three leading timeshare entities: Island One Resorts®, Welk Resorts and ResorTime.com®.

Timeshare units in the two resort companies and those listed on ResorTime.com, an online reservation service, will be advertised on HomeAway.com® to help rent vacant and unsold timeshare inventory as vacation rentals. The partnerships mark a strong synergy between HomeAway® and the timeshare industry to provide the most extensive offering of lodging options for travelers seeking vacation accommodations.

With timeshares booked about 79% of the year according to the American Resort Development Association‘s 2012 State of the Vacation Timeshare Industry research, HomeAway.comoffers the opportunity for resorts to close the gap on vacant and unused inventory.

The partnerships include the following companies:

  • Island One Resorts offers over 1,100 timeshare units at its eight Florida resorts: Barefoot’n Resort, Bryan’s Spanish Cove, Liki Tiki Village, Orbit One Vacation Villas and Parkway International Resort in Orlando, The Cove on Ormond Beach, Charter Club Resort of Naples Bay; and Crescent Resort on South Beach.
  • Welk Resorts was founded by entertainment industry legend Lawrence Welk, is operated by his grandson, President Jon Fredricks, and operates more than 1,100 timeshare units in resorts located in Escondido and Palm Springs, Calif., Branson, Mo. and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
  • ResorTime.com is the timeshare industry’s leading nightly rental reservation site. At The South Beach Wine & Food Festival, Gluttony For The Greater Good

By Erin Carlyle, Forbes Staff

It’s a warm February evening in South Beach and Wayne Chaplin–his dark hair tight to his head, his mouth creased into a smile–can finally relax, at least a bit. It’s the second evening of the raucous, three-day moveable feast known as the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, for the last 12 years the pet project of Chaplin and his family’s Southern Wine & Spirits of America, the country’s largest alcohol distributor. He’s sitting at a dinner in the tony Loews Hotel honoring the famed chef, Nobu Matsuhisha, joined by the likes of Martha Stewart and Christophe Navarre, the CEO of Moët Hennessy, and 577 other guests who each paid $500 a plate. This is the crowning event of the festival, which was attended by 60,000 people who mingled with all manner of famous chefs, from Food Network stars Guy Fieri and Paula Deen to highbrow pan-rattlers Alice Waters and Alain Ducasse. …read more

BMW’s 2014 6-series Lineup Receives a Few Performance Upgrades and a Special Edition

By John Lamm

BMW's 6 Series for 2014: can we hear a cheer for all-wheel drive, carbon ceramic brakes and a 6-speed manual?

There was already much to like about BMW’s latest-generation 6-series, and for 2014, the Bavarians have added a special-edition 6er and more of the equipment we love. While the car’s primary objective has been cruising the likes of Newport Beach, South Beach, and Greenwich in style, BMW has added another M-branded 6-series to the lineup for 2014 in the M6 Gran Coupe. But the new-for-2014 performance goodies don’t end there. The brand now offers all three M6s—Gran Coupe, coupe, and convertible—with a homegrown six-speed manual and carbon-ceramic brakes.A no-cost option over the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, the manual will provide automatic rev matching on downshifts so long as the car’s drive-mode selector is set to Efficient or Sport. Select Sport Plus and you’ll be left to match revs yourself. In addition to their well-documented stopping power, the carbon-ceramic brakes knock off 42.8 pounds of unsprung weight and, to impress the neighbors, have gold-painted calipers.

BMW's 6 Series for 2014: can we hear a cheer for all-wheel drive, carbon ceramic brakes and a 6-speed manual?

But if exclusivity, rather than outright performance, is what will impress the neighbors, you might consider the Frozen Brilliant White edition 650i convertible. Just 100 of these special editions will be made. The name would refer, of course, to the matte exterior finish, while the side-mirror caps, the grille, and the 20-inch aluminum-wheel accents are done in matte Frozen Black, while the ragtop is just black. The Nappa leather interior also is finished in black, and accented by Gray Poplar wood trim. The Frozen Brilliant White edition will be the first BMW stateside to arrive with the brand’s Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster, which sees instrumentation alter “personalities” based on which drive mode is selected. There’s the choice of sDrive rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, with xDrive adding the Cold Weather package, which includes heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel. Included in all 100 editions are the Executive and M Sport packages, the latter not making this a full M6, but adding items like an aero kit and an M steering wheel. Exclusivity, as is said, comes at a price, and the price for this one-of-100 650i convertible is $106,695, or $110,095 for xDrive models.

The Angler's Boutique Resort: What Makes It Trip Advisor's #1 Hotel In South Beach?

By Katie Kelly Bell, Contributor The Angler’s Boutique Resort is a charming, intimate destination just off of South Beach’s famed Ocean drive. It’s also ranked as the #1 hotel in South Beach by Trip Advisor, whose rankings are the result of guests reviews. Many consider their rankings the most authentic. But given the  luxury competition along Ocean Drive, it seems surprising that a small, boutique hotel would command the Number One Spot. Until you ask around. I queried some locals and visitors about which property they thought was South Beach‘s Number One hotel.

South Beach 'B-Girl' scammer gets 3 yrs prison

The ringleader of a Russian-mob connected Florida scam involving so-called “B-Girls” and wealthy male tourists has been sentenced to three years in federal prison.

A Miami judge on Friday agreed that 46-year-old Alec Simchuk deserved credit for voluntarily returning from Russia, pleading guilty and testifying against others. The term “B-Girls” is short for “Bar Girls.”

The scam involved attractive Russian and Eastern European women who trolled legitimate South Beach clubs looking for rich men. They brought the men to after-hours clubs, got them drunk and then charged huge amounts on their credit cards. Total losses were in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Most of the 19 people charged in the scam have been convicted.

A Fight Over Historic Preservation Brews in Art Deco Country

By hnn

MIAMI BEACH — When South Beach was little more than a forlorn chunk of beachfront property, preservationists clung to the idea that the faded, often derelict pastel buildings lining the streets were too precious to knock down.

Their campaign to preserve the area’s fanciful Art Deco buildings ushered in one of the country’s most successful urban revivals. Years later, South Beach is still a juggernaut.

Preservationists are now pushing hard to bolster historic preservation laws, a move that has ruffled wealthy property owners (and potential buyers) and stepped up pressure on local commissioners who are reluctant to wade into the politically precarious battle….
