Report: Kia Soul to get AWD?

By Brandon Turkus

2014 Kia Soul

Filed under:

The funky Kia Soul is one of the three affordable, efficient and style-first boxes on sale today (along with the Scion xB and Nissan Cube). Like its competition, it sits atop a front-drive platform with a longitudinally mounted four-cylinder engine.

It’s a dandy car in this setup, but it sounds like Kia may be looking to differentiate the Soul from the herd by offering an optional all-wheel-drive system in the future. According to the report filed by Kia World, the popularity of the small, stylish crossover segment is expected to expand considerably over the coming years, especially overseas.

Citing the optional all-wheel drive on the Renault Captur, Ford Ecosport and Opel Mokka (Buick Encore in the US), along with the eventual arrival of a sub-Tiguan Volkswagen, called the Taigun, an all-wheel-drive Soul seems to make a lot of sense for these foreign markets. In the American market, meanwhile, AWD would open the Soul up to a new segment of buyers that like its looks but want all-wheel ability. Kia World is claiming the Soul AWD could hit markets in 2016 wearing a ruggedized version of the sheetmetal shown on the 2014 Soul that debuted in earlier this year in New York. Expect a bit of extra ground clearance to accompany the new drivetrain. Finally, all-wheel drive would likely only be available on the mid-range Soul + and top-spec Soul !.

VAN NUYS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– ITT Exelis (NYS: XLS) has been awarded a contract valued at more than $102 million to provide the Electronic Support Measures (ESM) suite for Australia‘s ANZAC frigates and the Canberra class LHD ships, enhancing the country’s national defense capabilities throughout the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. With this contract, Exelis continues to extend its leading edge electronic warfare capabilities to international customers.

The Exelis ES-3701 ESM system will significantly improve the Royal Australian Navy‘s capability to detect radars from other surface ships and aircraft. It provides situational awareness, targeting, self-protection and surveillance, and utilizes a Windows-based interface for robust, easy-to-use graphical displays. The selection of the ES-3701 also provides commonality with other large warships in Australia‘s fleet, as the system is also being deployed on the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD).

“This award positions Exelis as the premier supplier of ESM systems in the Asia Pacific region and is a critical milestone in the region’s enhancement of its defenses,” said Rich Sorelle, Exelis corporate vice president and president of the Electronic Systems division.

This is the second major contract in recent years to provide electronic warfare systems to the Royal Australian Navy; Exelis was previously awarded the contract for the ESM suite for the AWD program. The work for these key contracts will be performed by the Exelis Electronic Systems, radar, reconnaissance and undersea systems business area from its Morgan Hill, Calif. location.

“Our ES-3701 system provides effective mission operations in all weather conditions and against all essential threats,” added Dave Prater, Exelis vice president and general manager of radar, reconnaissance and undersea systems. “It is ideally suited to achieve the operational mission requirements in a dynamic and challenging electronic warfare environment.”

2015 Audi A3 And S3 Models Debut In New York

By Kurt Ernst

2015 Audi S3 - image: Audi

2015 Audi S3 – image: Audi

Promising a “new level of Craftsmanship in the A segment,” Audi has revealed its latest sedan offerings ahead of the New York Auto Show. Serving up understated (but familiar) good looks and a variety of powertrains, the new A3 models will be available in a variety of powertrains, including the long-awaited S3 variant. Even the A3 Sportback returns, but it sounds like Audi will only offer its five-door wagon as a plug-in hybrid in the U.S. market.

The 2015 Audi A3 will come with a choice of three engines, not including the high-performance S3 variant. Base models get a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder, rated at 170 horsepower, but buyers can also opt for a 2.0-liter turbo four that should produce in the neighborhood of 210 horsepower (final figures are still pending). If you prefer diesels, the A3 is available with Audi’s 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel, which makes 150 horsepower and copious amounts of torque. The S3 gets its own, stronger 2.0-liter turbo four, which (sadly) has not yet been rated for output yet.

All engines come mated to Audi’s six-speed S tronic gearbox, which means that row-it-yourself shifting won’t be available when the models are released. Audi’s Drive Select will be available on A3 models, too, allowing the driver to fine tune shift points, throttle settings and steering response to road conditions. Front-wheel drive will be standard, but it sounds as if A3 models will be available with quattro AWD, too. As always with Audi’s S models, the S3 will come only with quattro AWD.

Audi’s interiors are among the best in the business, and it doesn’t look like th A3 or S3 will disappoint here, either. The cabin is highlighted by a unique wraparound dash, and Audi will give buyers the option to add things like LED ambient lighting, a Bang & Olufsen Audio System and the upgraded Audi connect infotainment system. Official: Restyled 2014 Buick Regal adds AWD, Regal GS loses power

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Although the current Buick Regal hasn’t even been on the market for very long, General Motors is using the New York Auto Show to unveil an updated version of the sedan in a similar fashion to what we saw yesterday with the 2014 LaCrosse. Like the LaCrosse, all 2014 Regal models will be getting a new look both for the exterior and interior design, but the big news takes place under the sedan’s skin.

Except for the base Regal eAssist, the Regal Turbo and Regal GS will both be adding the benefit of all-wheel drive, but there is no word as to how much weight this system will add to each car’s curb weight. The Regal Turbo‘s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder has received a decent bump in output from 220 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque to 259 hp and 295 lb-ft; unfortunately, these same figures are carried over to the Regal GS, which means that car drops from 270 hp. Both turbocharged models (Regal Turbo and Regal GS) will now be offered with all-wheel drive and the ability of sending more than 90 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels.

In terms of styling, the 2014 Regal gets similar styling changes found on the updated Enclave and LaCrosse, including reworked fascias, scalloped headlights and a full-width chrome strip spanning between the new LED taillights. Inside, key changes were made to the Regal’s cabin technology, such as the instrument gauge cluster and infotainment system. On the Regal and Regal Turbo, a new 4.2-inch color display is available for drivers to see information for the vehicle, navigation and audio systems, but the Regal GS’ cabin is slightly different with an eight-inch configurable gauge display. One of the best changes may be the overall reduction in buttons on the center stack, creating a cleaner-looking and easier-to-use cabin.

Like the 2014 LaCrosse, the 2014 Regal will also get updated safety and infotainment technology. The next-generation IntelliLink system improves connectivity with better voice recognition and higher levels of customization that include a customizable, five-button top menu and a lower menu that can store up to 60 favorites for the audio, phone and even navigation systems. As for safety, the Regal gets two new optional packages that add forward collision alert, land change alert, rear cross traffic alert and an adaptive cruise control system.

The new 2014 Buick Regal goes on sale this fall, and the official press release is posted below.

Report: BMW says yes to 1 Series M successor, no to M6 Gran Coupe with xDrive

By Steven J. Ewing

BMW 1 Series M Coupe

Filed under:

If you’re anything like us, the first half of that headline made you smile. The BMW 1 Series M Coupe was, without a doubt, one of our favorite cars from the past few years, and according to a BMW Blog interview, Dr. Friedrich Nitschke, head of the company’s M division, has confirmed that a successor is in the works.

“We haven’t made a decision yet, but the 1M coupe was so successful, that in my opinion, I am absolutely sure we will build a successor,” Nitschke told BMW Blog. Currently, BMW only offers the M135i version of the new 1 Series hatch in Europe, which Nitschke says is “not a pure M car.”

Moving elsewhere in the M range, BMW Blog asked about the M6 Gran Coupe that recently debuted at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. The obvious competitors for this car will be higher-power versions of the Porsche Panamera and Audi RS7, but while both of those offer all-wheel drive, the M6 only sends power to its rear wheels.

“We will not bring an all-wheel drive, only a rear-wheel drive,” Nitschke said in the interview. The main reason is that adding AWD means additional weight has to be tacked on, and even so, the BMW executives said that the car was developed to have specific handling and steering characteristics common to a rear-wheel-drive car. “I think it’s perfect the way it is,” Nitschke stated.

2013 Lexus LS 600h L AWD Review & Test Drive

By Harvey Schwartz

2013 Lexus LS600h LWB Beauty Right Wide Done Small

‘A BOLDER ULTIMATE LUXURY HYBRID SEDAN’

There are many luxury sedans on today’s market but none combines bold, sleek, sexy, yet elegant styling, with power, performance, luxury, comfort, safety and hybrid technology like the new 2013 Lexus 600h all-wheel drive, long wheelbase, hybrid sedan.  This year the LS gets refreshed with the bold new face of Lexus.  The aggressive spindle grille gives the new LS a more aggressive look while engineering a significant improvement in driving dynamics, responsiveness and handling.  Also up front is a wide bottom lower grille to channel more air into the engine plus another intake for directing air to cool down the front disc brakes. Signifying that it is a hybrid there are blue accents in the front headlamps, front and rear ‘L’ badges, Hybrid side badging on the chrome strip below the doors, taillamps, ‘600h’ rear badge and engine cover.  The front lamps are LED daylight running lights, LED turn signals, foglamps, LED low and high beam headlights and Smart beam along with the power-remote/heated side mirrors with integrated turn signal repeater lights.  Numerous stabilizing fins, a front spoiler, a rear diffuser and a low 58.3 inch ride height help the new Lexus 600h LWB cut through the air with a very low 0.26 co-efficient of drag.  This also increases high speed stability, cuts down on road noise coming into the cabin and enhancing the already high, for a full-size long wheelbase luxury sedan, EPA fuel mileage specs of 19mpg/city and 23mpg/highway.

2013 Lexus LS600h LWB Beauty Side Done Small

I have tested many of the world’s best super-luxury sedans but this new Lexus LS 600h LWB hybrid is the best combination of cutting-edge styling, high performance, high-technology, luxurious comfort, convenience, infotainment and safety.  It has it all with a base price of $119,910.00.  My test LS 600h was custom painted in Lapis Lazuli for an even more outstanding street presence.

The new LS 600h L has new laser screw welding, body adhesives and other structural reinforcements that increases rigidity enhancing stability, steering feel and handling.  This car is fun-to-drive in any of the new five drive modes-EV, ECO, Normal, Comfort, Sport and Sport+.  The 600h L came with the Air Suspension and the Variable Gear Ratio rack & pinion steering that automatically adjusts the damping force for optimal comfort and performance.  Any way you want the car to respond to your inputs, it does it with aplomb.  Both the front and rear suspensions feature multi-links with the double-jointed air-suspension.  The standard AWD system features a central, permanently engaged, Torsen Limited Slip center Differential to further enhance grip, traction and cornering stability.

2013 Lexus LS600h LWB Engine Done Small

Power is generated from a 5.0 liter DOHC, all-aluminum V8 with Dual VVT with intelligence and an electronically controlled intake.  The hybrid side features Motor Generator 1-Function-a primary generator, engine starter, Type-Permanent Magnet Motor-Cooling System-water cooled; Motor Generator …read more

2013 Jaguar “Roar Responsibly” Commercial: To Get It, Don’t Pay Attention [The Ad Section]

By Don Klein

2013 Jaguar Roar Responsibly

Award-winning ad man-cum-auto journalist Don Klein knows a good (or bad) car commercial when he sees one; the Ad Section is his space to tell you what he thinks of the latest spots. The ad’s rating is depicted via the shift pattern at the bottom, but everyone has an opinion when it comes to advertising, so hit Backfires below and tell us what you think, too.

Pop quiz: Based on this commercial, how many miles per gallon can you get with the 2013 Jaguar XF and XJ?

Are you sure? Sometimes, commercials are a bit like magic tricks: You swear you saw something happen right before your eyes (“They sawed that lady in half!”), but you really didn’t. Ad creators, like magicians, know how they want to direct your attention, so sometimes they keep their hands and patter zipping right along, even though what they’re saying doesn’t necessarily match what they’re showing. It’s not easy to do, but good magicians (and good ad men) can pull it off.

When I look at this commercial, here’s what I see: First, there’s a red XF being driven through a city. It looks nice. The announcer comes on and tells us “It’s got performance with efficiency,” so, naturally, I’m thinking he’s talking about the XF, because that’s what’s on the screen. He continues to say “It’s got all you want, in a car as alive as you are,” but now we’re seeing a different model, a gold XJ, so the “it” must refer to the entire Jaguar sedan line. To keep me thinking that way, the XF reappears as if to emphasize what he just said about the XJ. So he means both statements apply to both sedans, right?

Then we see a montage of Jaguar-related images before cutting back and forth between the two cars as the announcer says, “Introducing the supercharged V-6 and turbocharged four-cylinder engine that gets 30 miles per gallon highway, from Jaguar. So now you can roar responsibly.” Which is the main message of the commercial.

Ah, so the reason they keep switching from car to car and intermingling their attributes is because you can get these new engines in both the XF and XJ, right? Wrong. The six is available in both cars, but only the XF offers the turbo four, and that’s the engine that returns an EPA-rated 30 mpg. And even though that’s the highway-only figure, when the announcer says “highway,” they show a city driving shot. To add to the confusion, the car depicted at that point is the XJ, not the XF. So while no one explicitly says that the XJ gives you 30 mpg, you’d be forgiven for thinking so, especially since they never tell you the XJ’s mileage.

For the record, the SWB rear-drive XJ 3.0 is rated for 27 mpg highway, while the rear-drive LWB and AWD 3.0 XJs get 24 highway. You’ll notice that none of those numbers equal 30. At 23 mpg, the turbo-four XF’s combined fuel-economy number—which the ad doesn’t …read more

2013 Jaguar XF / XJ 3.0 AWD First Drives: A Couple of Arctic Cats

By Aaron Robinson

2013 Jaguar XJ 3.0 AWD and XF 3.0 AWD

If you live in Southern California or south Florida, Jaguar’s two best markets, an all-wheel-drive Jag is as useless as a chocolate teapot. But if you live in the Northeast, another hot zone for luxury nameplates, almost all of which make good money on AWD, it’s a different matter. Jaguar needs this all-weather option, and the price-leading XF and the flagship XJ get it for an extra $3000 and $3500, respectively. It comes in both cars, teamed exclusively with the new supercharged and direct-injected 3.0-liter V-6 that pulls 340 horsepower. READ MORE ››

Subaru Prices 2013 WRX and WRX STI Special Editions, We Suddenly Want Pumpkin Pie

By Andrew Wendler

Subaru has released MSRPs for the quite-orange WRX and WRX STI special editions it announced last November. The WRX sedan is set at $29,565, the STI sedan at $35,565. Both represent an increase of $500 over the standard-issue rally weapons.

Unveiled at the automotive sideshow known as SEMA, this pair of harvest-hued Subies will be limited to a total production run of 300 units. The split: 200 WRXs, 100 STIs. The mods are purely cosmetic, with both cars powered by the same 2.5-liter flat-four as their less-pumpkinish brethren, which means 265 horsepower and 244 lb-ft of torque in the WRX and 305 horsepower and 290 lb-ft in STI tune.

The WRX channels its might through a five-speed manual and on to all four wheels; the STI version employs a six-speed manual and adds a driver-controlled center diff to the AWD setup and a track performance-optimized mode for the stability control.

We’re guessing a large chunk of these were already spoken for even before pricing was announced, so you’ll want to get on the horn to your local dealer right now if you’re interested. You’ll likely have to beat Linus van Pelt to the punch, after all.

2013 Lexus GS350 – Higher Levels of Styling, Performance and Luxury

By Harvey Schwartz

2013 Lexus GS350 Sedan Beauty Side HA Done Small

‘NEW HIGHER LEVELS OF STYLING, PERFORMANCE AND LUXURY’

I just finished testing the all-new 2013 Lexus GS 350 and have to say that it is a giant leap forward for the model with its redesigned chassis, wider and stronger stance, a more spacious interior that is richly endowed with world-class features and premium details.  The new advanced performance enhancing technology makes it more than just a luxury car.  The all-new GS 350 is available in RWD, AWD and can be equipped with the available premium, luxury or F Sport packages for greater personalization.  I tested the GS 350 with the luxury package.

The new GS 3.5 liter engine has been enhanced to provide better fuel economy and more responsive performance.  The four-cam, four-valves per cylinder, all-alloy V6 engine also comes with dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence.  At 306 hp, it is one of the most powerful base engines in the segment, as well as the only one with both port and direct injection.  It propels the GS 350 from 0-60 mph in just 5.7 sec. and at the same time, boosts it fuel economy to EPA-estimated 19mpg/city and 28mpg/highway.  Acceleration from 30-50- mph can take just 3 sec. and improved intake and exhaust sound characteristics via an intake sound generator and optimized muffler chamber complement the bolder, more energetic dynamics of the new GS 350.  The RWD six-speed sequential shift automatic transmission comes with paddle shifters and sport driving functions for enhanced driving pleasure.  The transmission incorporates many features adopted from the Lexus IS F high-performance sedan-including faster shifts, earlier torque converter lockup and downshift blips-to support four driving modes that can be operated by toggling the new Lexus Drive Mode selector located on the center console.  In addition to Normal mode, the following settings let you customized your driving experience: ECO mod-revises throttle mapping, seat heating, and climate control settings for better fuel economy.  In ECO mode, meter lighting changes to blue; SPORT S model-revises throttle mapping and transmission shifting priorities to fully exploit the capabilities of the powertrain.  In SPORT S mode, meter lighting changes to red; SPORT S+-is available with the F-SPORT package and Luxury Package-engages handling enhancements via a sport setting of the adaptive variable suspension, steering system, and Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM) together with the powertrain enhancements of SPORT S mode.  I really felt the changing dynamics of the suspension when I pushed the Sport S and Sport S+ modes.  Damping forces were increased and the steering became even more responsive to my inputs.  You can now change the setting to suit how you want the GS 350 to drive when you are in a spirited mind or conventional easy going mind set.

Designing the new GS to be both strong and agile was a key focus of the engineering team.  They looked to the Lexus LFA supercar for design and dynamic inspiration.  The new platform is more rigid.  Engineers conducted extensive testing, ultimately increasing the number …read more

Quick Spin: 2013 Dodge Charger AWD Sport

By Steven J. Ewing

We won’t beat around the bush: The all-wheel-drive Dodge Charger is not a brand new car. This generation launched in 2011, AWD models and all. But for 2013, Chrysler has added an optional sport package to the AWD model, available with both the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 or the sweet, sweet 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The upgrades for this new sport pack are mainly cosmetic; a gloss black grille, new 19-inch alloy wheels and body-colored rear spoiler make up the list of exterior changes. Inside, there are new sport seats and paddle shifters, and the eight-speed automatic transmission has been reflashed for better performance.

But because vehicles like the Dodge Charger mainly stick out in our minds as being rear-drive bruisers, Chrysler wanted to give us the opportunity to test out the LX platform’s foul-weather prowess. And perhaps no place more appropriate to test such a system was way up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the dead of winter.

Driving Notes

  • It’s not a new formula by any means, but we still adore the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 under the hood of the Charger. 370 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque are more than enough motivation to get this hefty (4,450-pound) sedan up and moving with a quickness, even with all-wheel drive.
  • The new eight-speed automatic ‘box is really slick here in the Charger, and unlike other eight-cog units, you won’t find the transmission frequently jumping back and forth between gears.
  • Even with eight gears to keep the engine revving for efficiency, fuel economy isn’t anything stellar. Combined with all-wheel drive, the Charger R/T AWD Sport achieves 15 miles per gallon in the city or 23 mpg on the highway. Still, that’s about par for the class – a two-wheel-drive Hyundai Genesis with the 5.0-liter V8 achieves 16/25 mpg.
  • On our drive through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, we mostly encountered long stretches of two-lane backroads that, while throwing the occasional curve our way, were mostly straight and flat. This is ideal Charger territory, as the big sedan is perfectly poised to be a solid, comfortable highway cruiser above all.
  • We had the chance to pilot the Charger AWD Sport around a few handling courses in the snow, and there, the car offered safe amounts of fun. The Charger uses a rear-biased AWD system that only sends power to the front wheels when moments of slip or poor traction are encountered, but this means enthusiasts who like a bit of tail-wagging hooliganism in the snow will be very happy.
  • Even with that rear bias, the big Dodge never failed to snap itself back into line when we intentionally tried to break its butt loose. And since we were able to drive the Charger on a number of snowy, icy test courses, it was easy to see that this AWD system works well in all types of road conditions.
  • After so many years of lackluster cabins, it’s nice to be able to praise Chrysler interiors. Here in the Charger, we found both the sport cloth and leather seats to be immensely comfortable, and the overall fit and finish to the interior is quite nice. We especially like the carbon fiber-look trim pieces added to the Sport model for 2013.
  • Perhaps the best thing about the Charger’s interior is the Chrysler UConnect system – there’s a reason why it’s an award-winning piece of technology. The 8.4-inch screen is super easy to navigate, but this system’s biggest win is just how responsive it is to touch commands. Other automakers really should take note.
  • What’s great about this whole package is that the fullsize, loaded sedan tops out under the $40,000 mark. That’s comparable to fully optioned midsize sedans these days (like a Ford Fusion Titanium, for instance). Yes, those smaller cars are no doubt better on fuel economy, but for bang-for-the-buck performance, the Charger is really something special.

Official: Chrysler 300 Glacier edition ready to chill with AWD

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2013 Chrysler 300 Glacier Edition in front of frozen waterfalls

It seems that word is finally out on the redone Chrysler 300, as evidenced by the fact that the model’s sales almost doubled last year compared to 2011 (when the distinctive sedan was a little slow out of the gates). One thing that’s likely helping the car is a growing number of unique models like the 300S, 300 SRT8 and the new 300C John Varvatos Luxury Edition, and now one more trim has joined the lineup. Initially announced back in September, the 300 Glacier is on sale now with a starting price of $36,845 (*not including a $995 destination charge).

Designed with cold-weather climates in mind, the 300 Glacier is only available with all-wheel drive. Chrysler says the Glacier will run an additional $1,500 over the 300S AWD off which this car is based, but that extra money gets unique 19-inch aluminum wheels, an exclusive Glacier Blue Pearl Coat paint job and special interior treatments including piano black accents and fancier leather seats and stitching. Like the 300S, power from the Pentastar V6 has been bumped up to an even 300 horsepower (up from 292 hp) with the aid of a cold-air induction and freer-breathing exhaust. Naturally, the 363-hp Hemi V8 is still available, too.

For more information, scroll down to check out Chrysler’s official press release.

Updated Acura NSX Concept Graces Detroit Adding to Extended Anticipations

By Darryl

The Acura NSX Concept is undoubtedly a highly anticipated vehicle to inject a bit of true sports and exotic aptitude into the Acura and Honda brand. Being that the Acura NSX is still years off until it drops at your local dealership, engineers and designers have plenty of time make changes improvements to it. With that said, Acura brings the latest iteration of the NSX Concept to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit today.

What we get to see for the first time in the Acura NSX Concept is an interior. Aside from the surprising interior, a few minor changes have been made including the wheels selection. The Acura NSX Concept still carries its sexy looks and only adds to our eager anticipation. I am not sure if we can all wait two or so more years before this baby is officially released.

Hit up the updated press release from Acura on their latest NSX ‘Hybrid’ Concept and be sure to view the new interior shots.

Acura Unveils Next Evolution of NSX Concept at 2013 North American International Auto Show
Acura provides first look at possible NSX interior design concept

01/15/2013 – DETROIT, Mich

Acura today unveiled a new NSX Concept that showcases the evolution of the next-generation supercar’s styling and design, including a first-ever look at one possible direction for the next-generation NSX interior design.

“This further evolution of the Acura NSX Concept design is remarkably true to the original concept styling,” said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations. “We’re making great progress in delivering on the expectations we created a year ago, with advanced technology that will bring new levels of performance and a unique, dynamic experience to the exotic sports car market.”

The new Acura NSX Concept is based on the expected underpinnings of the vehicle Acura will bring to market. Still, the new NSX Concept maintains its low and wide stance with the dynamic and alluring proportions that debuted in the original NSX Concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show — highlighted by clean, modern and simple surfacing, and edgy details that communicate supercar attitude and a high-tech feel.

The new NSX Concept also features a first-ever look at one potential direction for the next-generation Acura NSX interior design. The design concept is founded on a “Human Support Cockpit” theme, a strong expression of Acura’s product direction focused on “the synergy between man and machine.” The interior package boasts outstanding visibility, an exotic driving position, and an intuitive “Simple Sports Interface” that minimizes interior clutter, allowing the driver to focus on the driving experience.

“Consistent with the spirit of the original NSX, our intention is to support the psychological and emotional aspects of driving a super car at the limit, because we are insistent about delivering on the synergy between man and machine,” said Jon Ikeda, chief designer, Acura Design Studio. “Importantly, this will be true of all Acura vehicles moving forward.”

With the aim of delivering a new sports car experience that combines next-generation supercar dynamic capabilities with advanced environmental performance, Acura announced a year ago that the Acura NSX will be powered by a mid-mounted, direct-injected V-6 engine mated to Acura’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system.

Acura Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is an all-new, three-motor high-performance hybrid system that combines torque vectoring all-wheel drive with advanced hybrid efficiency through the use of three electric motors – one motor integrated with the V-6 engine and two motors driving the front wheels – along with an all-new dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The system enables instant delivery of negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering to achieve a new level of driving performance unparalleled by current AWD systems.

As previously announced, the new NSX is being developed by a global R&D team led by designers and engineers at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. located in Los Angeles, California, and Raymond, Ohio. The new NSX will also be manufactured at a new production facility in central Ohio.

Detroit: 2014 Quattroporte kicks off 50th anniversary for Maserati with new V6, AWD

By Jeffrey N. Ross

It’s not that often that we get to talk about a new Maserati model, but that’s all about to change. The Italian automaker is using the 2014 Quattroporte to begin a lineup expansion that will soon grow to no fewer than five models. Entering its sixth generation, the Quattroporte has been completely redesigned, and is also adding a new V6 engine and all-wheel drive.

Pictures of the car were released last year and we’ve even had the chance to drive the car in France already, but we finally got to see both the 410-horsepower V6 and 530-hp V8 versions of the car at its debut at the Detroit Auto Show. The new Quattroporte is 100-percent Maserati with its svelte-ye-aggressive styling, but it adds more of a mainstream look to better compete with the growing number of high-end luxury sedans. Not all of the Autoblog staff consider it an improvement, but it doesn’t stray too far from the Italian styling of the last model.

The interior has also been brought up to date with modern infotainment technology and improved luxury courtesy of a longer wheelbase bringing more space to rear-seat occupants. While the V8 we drove had a bench rear seat and oddly retro-modern wheels, the car on display had more conventional wheels and the two-passenger rear seat bucket seat layout.

Both engines used in the new Quattroporte are proprietary to Maserati and produced by Ferrari in Maranello. A new all-wheel-drive V6 model, called the Q4, will now be offered, and it will allow a 50:50 torque split between the front and rear axles. Scroll down for the official press release for the new Quattroporte.

Official: Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG gets same AWD, power boost as new E63 models

By Steven J. Ewing

Mercedes-Benz recently took the wraps off its updated 2014 E-Class, including the absolutely bonkers E63 AMG sedan (and wagon!). Aside from the obvious styling tweaks, the key changes for the AMG E-Class include a more powerful S-Model trim and the addition of 4Matic all-wheel drive to the historically rear-drive-only platform.

We’ve now learned that those changes will be making their way over to the swoopy CLS63 AMG sedan, as well as the not-for-America Shooting Brake model. In its base form, the rear-drive CLS63 cranks out 557 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque from its 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8, sent to the ground via the automaker’s AMG Speedshift seven-speed transmission. 4Matic all-wheel drive is optional on the CLS63.

Just like the E63, the crazier S-Model package includes a power bump that raises those engine output numbers to 585 hp and 590 lb-ft. All S-Model cars come standard with 4Matic, as well as other features including a locking rear differential, optional carbon ceramic brakes and a host of exterior design upgrades.

The upgraded CLS goes on sale in Germany in April, with the 4Matic and S-Model cars arriving in June. We’ve asked Mercedes-Benz for confirmation about US market availability, but have not heard back as of this writing. Scroll down for the official release.

Official: Dodge announces Sport package for AWD Charger

2013 Dodge Charger AWD Sport - dashing through the snow

We normally think of the Dodge Charger (and its Chrysler 300 brethren) as being rear-wheel-drive muscle sedans, but we mustn’t forget about the fact that all-wheel drive is available as well. And in an effort to give the AWD models a bit more presence, the all-season Dodge sedan will be getting a new sport package for the 2013 model year.

The AWD Sport pack – available on SXT, SXT Plus, R/T and R/T Plus trims – gets you a raft of visual upgrades including a gloss black grille, unique 19-inch wheels and a body-color rear spoiler. Inside, the package adds paddle shifters and sport seats in either cloth or leather, depending on trim.

This Sport pack retails for $1,395 on SXT models with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, and $1,195 on R/T cars with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine. As part of the new package, the eight-speed automatic transmission also receives a more aggressive sport setting.

Interested customers can order their cars now, with production spanning from December until February. See the new Sport model for yourself in the gallery above (and yes, we’ve asked Chrysler to pass along some photos that have the whole car in the frame), and scroll down to read the full press blast.
