Electrical parameter measuring work bench
By Amrit Jain
I have an SMPS with me with a connected load(LED light)
I have only two terminals of input AC supply, which are open. I need to design a workbench which can check I/P voltage, Current, PF, THD, Wattage all in one. there will be 5 separate meters to measure each individuals. I just need to know how these meters will be connected in series or parallel.
What are the precautions which need to be taken while making this test bench.
i have a auto transformer with me, so i also want to have a voltage range feature in this.
like at 85V, what is the all other parameters, at 150V, what are all other parameters etc.
Please suggest some good electrical connection diagram with all necessary precautions mentioning each.
Philly Skyscraper Hosts … Giant Game of Pong
By John Johnson If anyone in downtown Philadelphia last night was wondering about that strangely familiar pattern of lights on the Cira Center, the AP has the answer: They were epic games of the classic Atari game Pong. The games played out via LED lights on the facade of the 29-story skyscraper, with…

Shanghai: Ford Escort returns… as a concept
Filed under:
Ford is kickin’ it old school at the Shanghai Motor Show for 2013 with a new Escort Concept – “a name that stirs up thoughts of basic, affordable transportation rather than great driving dynamics or bold design” as we said in our initial preview of the small C-segment sedan. Or, as Ford puts it, “Customers in China described seeking a vehicle that is stylish – but not one that is arrogant or pretentious.” Potato, potahto…
It’s an interesting amalgam of design notes with Ford’s recent and stylish hexagonal grille up front, flanked by some pretty busy LED light clusters and chrome-trimmed air intakes at the lower extremities of the fascia, but the Escort Concept is not altogether unattractive. Besides its external appearance, we really don’t have much information to report – Ford has not yet hinted at what may be powering this little machine, but we’d expect something with four cylinders and less that 2.0 liters of displacement sending a modest number of horses to the front tires.
It probably goes without saying, but we don’t expect to see this Escort make its way to the United States, since we already have the Focus and the Fiesta battling it out in the econobox segment. That said, it’s very likely to spawn a production model that will roll out here in China and in other developing market where multiple C-segment entries are becoming increasingly common. Check out our high-res image gallery of live images above, and let us know what you think of the car’s styling, then scroll down below for the official press release.

Official: Ford Escort Concept goes back to basics
Filed under:
Here’s the thing about China: The folks buying cars there have a very different set of standards than shoppers in many other markets around the globe. While we all drool over hot metal with bold designs, and while we appreciate automakers going an extra step to inject even their cheapest offerings with aggressive and interesting cues, that sort of sheetmetal sex appeal doesn’t always sell in the People’s Republic. Case in point is Jaguar, which may be designing a more traditional-looking version of its XJ for the Chinese market, or more to the point of this story, Ford currently sells the less-exciting, last-generation Focus compact in China right alongside the new one.
So consider this new Shanghai-bound C-segment concept a preview of what’s to come for that more traditional, budget-minded, less-sexy market. More proof of this pudding: Ford’s even calling this concept the Escort – a nod to the Blue Oval‘s compact car days of yore, and a name that stirs up thoughts of basic, affordable transportation rather than great driving dynamics or bold design. “Customers in China described seeking a vehicle that is stylish – but not one that is arrogant or pretentious,” Ford states. And this new Escort concept previews a possibility of providing exactly that for this rapidly expanding automotive market.
What you’re looking at, then, is one of the most simple Ford designs we’ve seen of late, though it still incorporates all of the automaker’s latest DNA. The signature hexagonal grille is front and center, flanked by attractive LED headlamps and chrome-rimmed foglamp housings. The entire car’s design focuses on clean, smooth surfaces, with one strong character line flowing from front to back just below the beltline. We will say that the car looks decidedly more premium from the rear view, where narrow, horizontal taillamps with an LED accent give the car added visual width. Bland as it may be, it’s a handsome little concept, though fear what would likely happen if all of the conceptual details get dumbed down for a production model.
We aren’t able to see inside the concept, and no details have been released about what might lie under the hood. Ford is mostly using the Escort as a way to show Chinese customers what could be in store for a future product offering, especially since the automaker is committed to bringing 15 new products to China by the year 2015. Ford even plans to build five new plants in China by 2016 as part of a larger plan to open seven facilities throughout Asia-Pacific, with enough capacity to produce roughly 2.7 million vehicles annually in the region.
In addition to the Escort Concept, Ford will use the Shanghai Motor Show to debut the Chinese-market Mondeo, complete with its new 1.5-liter EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine, as well as the new Fiesta ST. Scroll down for the full press blast.

Pong Game To Be Played On 437-Foot Philadelphia Skyscraper On Friday
By The Huffington Post News Editors
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A skyscraper-sized game of pong is ready to go in Philadelphia, hopefully under stars and not rainclouds.
Frank Lee, a Drexel University game-design professor, said Friday’s classic Atari video game is on schedule to be played on the facade of a mirrored, 29-story skyscraper, even if it rains. Hundreds of built-in LED lights embedded in the north face of the Cira Centre will replicate the familiar paddles and ball with gamers controlling giant, table-mounted joysticks across the Schuylkill River from the building.
The event starts at 8 p.m.

Teased: Toyota teases 2014 4Runner, will debut on April 27
Filed under:
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner appears to be getting a styling refresh that is as out of the ordinary for Toyota as the venue at which it will be debuting. Launching on April 27 at the 2013 Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, CA, the 2014 4Runner looks to be getting more of an in-your-face design. Toyota says this marks the first time it has ever revealed a new product at a music festival.
While we only see two images of the updated 2014 4Runner, the new headlights break from the rectangular shape present on the current model for an edgy, scalloped shape. Below the headlights are vertical air inlets – looking quite similar to the 2014 Subaru Forester XT – but it isn’t clear if all models will get these or just special trim levels. The other image Toyota released was of the smoked, LED taillight.
As the presenting sponsor of the music festival, Toyota will have legendary off-road driver Ivan “Ironman” Stewart at the show as well as an off-road driving course for people to drive the automaker’s trucks and SUVs. Scroll down for a press release giving some additional information about both the 2014 4Runner and the Stagecoach Music Festival.

Review: Dell’s UltraSharp U3014 delivers the big picture
A 30-inch desktop giant, the Dell UltraSharp U3014 offers resolution of 2460 by 1600 pixels on a matte IPS screen with environmentally friendly LED backlighting. The U3014 boasts several nice-to-have features and a long list of on-board controls for tuning your image on screen.
You might need to enlist some help in attaching the heavy monitor to its stand. But once you’ve done that, you can connect it to your computer using your choice of DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, or Mini DisplayPort.
The U3014 supports DisplayPort 1.2, including multistreaming, so you can daisy-chain two or more monitors and display independent images on each one (provided your video card also supports DisplayPort 1.2).
The U3014 also supports picture-in-picture mode, but only with certain combinations of connections. DVI and HDMI can’t be used together, nor can the two types of DisplayPort connections (DisplayPort In is used only in daisy-chain scenarios). I was also surprised to discover that the monitor doesn’t scan all of its inputs on power-up, so I had to manually select the input I was using the first time. There is an input-scan button, but you must engage it by pushing a button.

These Star Wars Guitars Rock
Why strum on just any old guitar when you can rock out on these Star Wars-inspired six-stringers?
For over a decade, 64-year-old Tom Bingham has been creating one-of-a-kind instruments based on things like chessboards, vinyl records, cricket bats — and more recently, the artisan has been crafting Star Wars electric guitars, including one based on the Millennium Falcon.
“I originally started making cigar box guitars but I got bored. Now I just make them out of anything,” Bingham told The Sun in a recent interview. “I saw a picture of a Millennium Falcon on the internet years ago and did my own version… I use a replica and attach a neck to it. With the Falcon I even put flashing LED lights in the back.”

Air Handler Blower Motor
By astrobevo
The problem right now is the air handler inside is not moving air. The outside unit kicks on and runs when my thermostat switches to cool. Also, I can hear the refrigerant being moved and the casing of the air handler near my filter gets cold. I don’t think the problem is there. I pulled the breakers to inspect the PC board, relay and capacitor and I don’t see any damage to them. There is a red LED that blinks on for 2 seconds and then off for 2seconds when there is power, which I think means the PC board is functioning correctly. I have a multimeter, but would appreciate some instructions on how to test each of those components for failures.
The one problem that seems to be obvious is the blower motor looks to have some damaged coils. I removed the leads to the motor to see if there was power being supplied to the motor, and my multimeter red about 240 volts with thermostat turned on. Odd thing though, when I turned thermostat off, I still read 240 volts. I had 4 wires hooked up to my motor, yellow from board (I think) to H port (M and L had no connection), brown was soldered on motor and connected to CAP and so was purple. Another purple wire came from board to CAP. Green wire grounded motor to blower casing. The multimeter readings above came when I attached leads to the yellow wire that went to motor and purple wire that went to CAP.
An I right to think I can keep this same configuration and just replace the motor, or am I setting myself up to blow another motor? Sorry for the length…
Philips Lights Up LEDs
By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool
Normally, you don’t think of your lighting choices as an investment, but when the government is handing out $10 million in prizes so companies can develop $60 light bulbs, you better crack open your piggy bank (and break into Fort Knox) if you want to light up your house.
But last year’s L prize winner, Koninklijke Philips Electronics , says it also has the next advance in LED lighting that will be more efficient and slightly more affordable than its oft-ridiculed predecessor. The lighting specialist says it has developed an LED bulb that can produce 200 lumens of light per watt, a threshold that puts it at about double what a typical fluorescent bulb generates. While it will cost slightly more than its fluorescent rival, the total cost of ownership of the bulb will be much less.
Source: Philips.
That’s also not a term you typically associate with your lighting needs, but until recently it was one you had to consider when deciding whether to change over to LEDs. Your initial up-front costs were substantial, but the savings over time greatly outweighed the cost. Even Philips’ $60 bulb would eventually save you money since it’s estimated they’d last for $20 years.
LEDing the way to profits
LED lighting leader Cree would likely take exception to Philips touting its work in this field since it previously developed an LED bulb that would reach 200 lumens per watt, though it occurs only under some circumstances. It’s also gone the route of producing a bulb that looks more like a traditional light bulb.
Both Philips and Cree have LEDs on the market that retail for around $10 to $15 despite taking different approaches to achieve that relatively affordable price level. Suffice to say that both realize if LEDs are going to gain broad public adoption, their cost will have to come down more while the bulbs themselves need to do more.
A bright future
Even so, the market researchers at IHS estimate the LED lighting market will advance 40% this year. The time is quickly approaching when the compact fluorescent bulb, which was always seen as something of a transitional technology between traditional incandescent bulbs and highly efficient LEDs, will completely disappear.
The greatest uptake in the technology is coming first in commercial and industrial settings, where businesses with heavy lighting usage will realize the greatest savings in the shortest amount of time. Individual consumers with far more modest lighting needs will see more limited savings that will be stretched over extended periods of time.
Blinded by the light
Philips will be introducing its new 200 lumen bulb in 2015 and expects that within 10 years half the world’s fluorescents will be displaced. More importantly, their cost will fall rapidly with their increased efficiency, making them cheaper to own within a year, as opposed to the current three years. Acuity Brands thinks Philips may still be in the dark about that, believing LEDs will surpass fluorescents in as

2014 Audi R8 Starts at $119,150; Spyder Starts at $132,650
By Kirk Seaman
Audi’s refreshed-for-2014 mid-engined supercar, the R8, goes on sale today and official pricing has been announced. Starting at $119,150, the R8 coupe comes with a 430-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 with a six-speed manual. Audi will offer the V-8–powered R8 in a spyder as well, while a 525-hp, 5.2-liter V-10 will be available in both the coupe and spyder. For the ultimate R8, there is a new V-10 Plus model that can be had only in coupe form, and it will be good for 550 horsepower with carbon-ceramic brakes standard. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard on all models as well.
Pricing for the base R8 (if there can be considered such a thing) represents a modest $700 increase over the previous V-8 model; changes for all 2014 R8s include new “wave”-rotor brakes, new LED headlights and taillights, large dual exhaust outlets that replace the previous quad outlets, and new interior trim bits. A gated six-speed manual is standard on all R8s, while a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional across the board. Pricing is as follows:
• V-8 coupe: $119,150; $128,250, automatic
• V-8 spyder: $132,650; $141,750, automatic
• V-10 coupe: $155,450; $164,550, automatic
• V-10 spyder: $168,950; $178,050, automatic
• V-10 Plus coupe: 174,795; $183,895, automatic
Any flavor of R8 sets our enthusiast hearts aflutter, but the new V-10 Plus model puts it in full triathlon-pounding mode. Consider not only that the 550-hp V-10 makes 398 lb-ft of torque (25 horsepower and 7 lb-ft more than the standard V-10), but that Audi estimates the Plus model weighs 130 pounds less than the regular V-10 due to weight-reducing features such as the use of carbon fiber for the side blades, front splitter, rear diffuser and spoiler; a smaller fuel tank; manual seats; and reduced sound insulation in the engine bay. Audi estimates that the V-10 Plus equipped with the automatic can launch from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. Top speed is pegged at 196 mph.
- Comparison Test: V12 Vantage vs. R8 V10, 458 Italia, SLS AMG, 911 Turbo S
- Feature: Camp Le Mans—A Night with Audi’s New R8 GT
- First Drive: 2011 Lamborghini Gallardo Bicolore and 2012 Spyder Performante
While we’ll wait to strap our test equipment on the R8 to get you the real numbers, there can be little doubt that Audi is not backing down in the supercar cage fight. We look forward to putting it up against the Porsche 911 and the Nissan GT-R to see which one comes out on top.
Until then, check out this preview video of the new R8 as featured in the upcoming Iron Man 3 movie:

IXYS Introduces a Portable High Efficiency Solar Charger and LED Light Bar Best in Class for Mobile Application – The Solar Pad
MILPITAS, Calif. & SUWON, South Korea & BIEL, Switzerland–(BUSINESS WIRE)– IXYS Corporation (NAS: IXYS) , a manufacturer of power semiconductors and integrated circuits (ICs) for energy efficiency, power management, and motor control applications, today announced the release of The Solar Pad – a high-efficiency Li-Polymer solar charger ideal for charging smart phones, tablets, and multi-media players via standard USB connection.
Measuring 120mm in length, 76mm in width, and 18mm in height and weighing 300g, the IXYS solar charger is highly portable – it is about the size of a smart phone. Equipped with 2 USB ports, one micro-USB port, and 4 white LED lights, it produces 5.2V of power at 1.5A, which is about 8 watts of solar power.
The Solar Pad is constructed with a 1W solar cell and is the most efficient portable in its class; it achieves a high efficiency of 22 percent. Its high capacity Li-Polymer battery, however, can also be quickly charged through a USB input at the rate of 1.2A at 5V. It is able to deliver power to other devices while it itself is being charged. Moreover a smart charging feature implemented with an MCU protects the device from being over- charged or discharged.
Additionally it is more than a mobile battery charger; its LEDs function as a highly bright flashlight (1W), which can be configured as either “blinking” or “continuous”. The flashlight is usable during both charging and discharging modes.
Due to its compact size, high capacity Li-Polymer battery, and highly portable nature, it comes in handy during camping trips, emergency situations, or power outages. The solar charger provides extra power to such portable electronic devices as all phones, smart phones, tablets, E-Books, PDAs, GPS devices, portable media players, and other portable tools and gadgets.
“We at IXYS took this initiative, initially as reference designs, to demonstrate the capabilities of our proprietary Solar Bits™, that enable our customers to add solar power charging to their products. Our reference designs were converted by our team to real products, for consumers worldwide who lack easy access to electricity, to be able to have chargeable flashlight and chargers for their mobile phones,” commented Dr. Nathan Zommer, founder and CEO of IXYS.
“These products demonstrate the contribution of the semiconductor products, from MCUs, analog ICs, power discretes

Philips targets office market with new LED light
Royal Philips NV is set to unveil a new light it says will replace the fluorescent tube lamps that are common in many offices around the world.
In an interview with The Associated Press ahead of the unveiling of the new lamp Thursday, Rene van Schooten, a top executive at the company, says the lamp will save energy and money as well as cut pollution.
The new lamp is an LED light interchangeable with the best fluorescents currently on the market — but taking only half the energy.
As the largest maker of lights by sales globally, Philip’s claims command attention.
Experts outside the Dutch company have long expected LEDs to eclipse fluorescents. However, if Philips’ bulbs make it to market as advertised, that would be somewhat ahead of expectations.

Lennox Whisperheat intermittent
By thewitt
I have a furnace that works, then doesn’t. I’ve replaced the thermostat and reset the furnace (by tripping and resetting the breaker). When resetting, I hear the damper door close / move if open.
I also removed the thermostat and tied the W & R together. Sometimes this forces the furnace on, sometimes not. With these tied, I’ve reset the furnace. I can hear the ignitor (click click click click) then it fires up (sometimes). Other times, it does nothing (damper door still moves).
On the furnace itself is box with an LED – marked 63K2401 and G776RGD-11. I see there are 3 modes on/flashing/off. To help track down this problem, can someone let me know if the LED should be ON all the time, or only when the furnace is running?
Any other thoughts, please chime in.

If it’s true that misery loves company, then acrophobes and claustrophobes will enjoy this next item.
On Tuesday, airplane interiors outfitter B/E Aerospace announced that one of its customers has just hired it to retrofit its fleet of Boeing 737 airplanes with new, smaller lavatories. Henceforth, fearers of flying can add claustrophobia to their worry-list.
According to B/E, the customer — whom B/E declined to identify — will soon be installing new lavatories featuring B/E “Aircraft Ecosystems” vacuum toilets, new LED lighting systems, antimicrobial coatings, and “Spacewall” technology on its planes. B/E says that when combined with other remodeling, including changes to the pitch of seats, converting to the new facilities will free up enough extra space onboard the planes to squeeze in “up to six incremental passenger seats per aircraft.” Henceforth, B/E says its new lavatories “will become standard equipment for [Boeing’s] new 737’s.”
B/E spokesman Greg Powell its new lavatories offer “more useable space, and [are] more comfortable for passengers.”The Wall Street Journal reports that Delta Airlines likes the new loos.
Delta spokesman Anthony Black says there’s no noticeable difference in space within the lavatory and confirmed by telephone that the 100 Boeing 737-900s that Delta has on order will feature the new loo layout, permitting the installation of four more passenger seats than normal. But Delta has no plans to retrofit its existing 737s with B/E’s new configuration.
So Delta is not the airline retrofitting its planes with smaller lavatories. As for anyone who is, they might want to heed a warning from Seth Meyers, who quipped on Saturday’s edition of “SNL Weekend Update” that “the top two complaints about air travel are the bathrooms are too big and there aren’t enough people on my flight.”
