Blizzard Invests in eSports, Takes the Reins of IPL from IGN

By Paul Tassi, Contributor

Many of us eSports fans were quite saddened when a casualty of Ziff Davis‘s recent acquisition of IGN turned out to be IPL, the eSports pro league which had put on some of the best events out there, despite competition with deeper pockets. IPL 6 in Vegas was cancelled at the last minute, and it seemed that a major force in eSports had been dissolved for good. …read more

Official: Infiniti hires Sebastian Vettel as Director of Performance

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Remember when, during the Grand Prix of the Americas weekend last November, we told you that Sebastian Vettel had worked with Infiniti on the new G Coupe and that there’d be more of that kind of involvement on the way? It’s been made official with the three-time Formula One World Champion being named Infiniti’s Director of Performance.

Although the announcement is fresh, Vettel’s time on the job isn’t, Infiniti saying that Vettel went to Japan, the Nürburgring and the Circuit de Catalunya to assist in the development of the Q50 sedan.

When we spoke to Andreas Sigl, the man in charge of Infiniti’s F1 collaboration with Red Bull, about the tie-up he had also said, “Like Mercedes has AMG and BMW has M – whether it’s called IPL or not – we want to have something in that space.” If the brand is still serious about that, Vettel’s chops could help them deliver the kind of performance they’d need as upstarts to challenge the ringleaders of that particular hi-po circus.

We might find out soon enough if Vettel’s s better at taking team orders from Infiniti than Red Bull. There’s a press release below with the officially sanctioned paragraphs outlining his new role.

Sebastian Vettel Named Infiniti’s Director of Performance, Director of Teamwork Position Still Open [2013 New York Auto Show]

By Kirk Seaman

Vettel Named Director of Performance

Today at the New York auto show, Infiniti president Johan de Nysschen named Sebastian Vettel as Director of Performance for the Infiniti brand. Vettel, lead driver for Infiniti Red Bull Racing and three-time Formula 1 champ, already has been helping Infiniti imbue its models with more performance (starting with the Infiniti FX Vettel Edition and more recently with the new 2014 Q50 sedan).

Vettel’s input on the development of the Q50 was said to be significant, as he spent time with engineers in Japan to develop the sedan’s chassis dynamics, performance, and handling. Infiniti is seeking any and all ways to maximize its $250-million deal with Red Bull Racing, and Vettel is the most obvious way to do so. We speculated just a month ago that Infiniti might put a Red Bull Racing badge on an IPL or other Infiniti car, and naming Vettel as head of performance is possibly a step in that direction.

“I am really happy to extend my extend my relationship with Infiniti and become its Director of Performance” said Vettel. “Helping to develop the Infiniti Q50 was a very different type of driving duty for me but I approached it in exactly the same way as I do my Formula 1 car. I am looking forward to working closely with Infiniti in developing more of its road cars in the future.”

Clearly this move was well underway before the events of this past weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix, although you have to wonder if Seb will be a more cooperative Director of Performance than he is a Formula 1 teammate.

B&W Awarded Environmental Equipment Contract for Iowa Power Plant

B&W Awarded Environmental Equipment Contract for Iowa Power Plant

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYS: BWC) announced today that its subsidiary Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. (B&W PGG) has been awarded a contract to deliver, erect and commission a dry flue gas desulfurization system for Interstate Power and Light Company’s (IPL) 270 megawatt coal-fired Lansing Generating Station in Lansing, Iowa. IPL is a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation (NYS: LNT) .

Under contract to Burns & McDonnell, B&W will deliver and erect a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) with a lime and byproduct solids handling system for the reduction of emissions, including sulfur dioxide (SO2). B&W will also supply new bags for the plant’s existing pulse jet fabric filter. Babcock & Wilcox Construction Co., Inc. will erect the environmental equipment.

CDS technology – also known as Circulating Fluid Bed Flue Gas Desulfurization (CFB-FGD) – is applicable to a wide range of unit sizes and fuel sulfur content, but is ideally suited for smaller units that fire medium to high sulfur coals. In conjunction with the pulse jet fabric filter, the CDS reduces an array of emissions with low capital and operating costs, and no waste water production.

“We’ve enjoyed an outstanding professional relationship with Interstate Power and Light Company and Burns & McDonnell on past projects, and we appreciate this opportunity to work with these two outstanding companies again,” B&W PGG President and Chief Operating Officer J. Randall Data said. “A CDS system supplied by B&W is an ideal solution for many customers who are looking to reduce a plant’s SO2 emissions while minimizing capital cost.”

Construction on the Lansing project is scheduled to begin in 2014 and to be completed in 2015. Commissioning and startup will also occur in 2015.

About B&W

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., The Babcock & Wilcox Company is a leader in clean energy technology and services, primarily for the nuclear, fossil and renewable power markets, as well as a premier advanced technology and mission critical defense contractor. B&W has locations worldwide and employs approximately 14,000 people, in addition to approximately 10,400 joint venture employees. Learn more at www.babcock.com .

Future Infiniti IPL Performance Models to See Big Input from Red Bull Racing F1 Team

By Justin Berkowitz

The outgoing Infiniti G37 IPL was never meant to be a direct challenger to heavy hitters like the BMW M3, just a warmer G, and it showed. (In fact, a source at Nissan once told us there was a relatively big “uh-oh” moment when the BMW 335is was announced.) With Infiniti now taking, well, everything seriously, that has to change. For help in making the next Infiniti Performance Line models competitive, the brand is turning to its new corporate partner—Red Bull Racing. Yes, that’s right—engineers and test drivers from the reigning world-champion F1 team.

Infiniti’s sponsorship of Red Bull Racing, then, is the $250-million gift that keeps on giving. Although plans for some engineering exchanges have been on the table since their relationship commenced in 2011, we’ve not heard much since then. Now that an initial period of awkward, “Do you like pizza? I like pizza” getting to know one another, has ended, senior execs on both sides say, the two organizations are really getting down to business. We’ll see the first, juiciest fruits of this collaboration on the upcoming Q50 IPL. We’re still not expecting a full-blown M3, but the result should be an extremely capable sports sedan.

To get a sense of what Red Bull can offer, one need only look at the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel edition. Far from a cynical marketing ploy to slap a driver’s name on a road car, Vettel himself took to track in a prototype version of the FX that was to bear his name. Speaking to the development team after his high-speed drive, Vettel was encouraged to be candid. Apparently, he was—and gave the folks from Infiniti a laundry list of improvements to be made. He returned months later and found that his suggestions had been incorporated.

There may even come a time when we see some indication of Red Bull Racing as a badge on an IPL or other Infiniti road car, we’ve heard. But the people running both organizations are very clear that they’d rather see genuine engineering collaboration on the road cars than logo stickers. We agree, especially since most Americans just know Red Bull as caffeinated sugar water. Unfortunately, IPL has even less recognition than that. But with a crew of Formula 1 specialists now getting deeply involved, IPL could become a household name—in households that subscribe to Car and Driver, at least—very soon.

Quick Spin: 2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible

By Michael Harley

2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible - front three-quarter, white

Infiniti rolled out the IPL version of its G37 Convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show more than a year ago. The Infiniti Performance Line treatment logically mirrors that of the IPL G Coupe, meaning it receives both cosmetic and mechanical tweaks designed to raise the pulse of driving enthusiasts. Aside from the overstated aerodynamic styling components and huge exhaust tips, the cabin features special leather upholstery, aluminum trim and IPL badging to distinguish it from lesser siblings. Under the hood, the 3.7-liter V6 (VQ37VHR) has been recalibrated to deliver 343 horsepower – 18 more than the standard coupe – and 273 pound-feet of torque. The suspension has been upgraded with firmer spring and stabilizer bar rates, multi-piston sport brakes are fitted and 19-inch graphite-finish wheels wrapped with summer rubber are bolted on. There are only two exterior color choices (Moonlight White and Malbec Black) and two upholstery choices (Stone and IPL-exclusive Monaco Red). Everything sounds marvelous until someone reveals its as-tested $62,415 window sticker.

  • The three-section steel roof raises and lowers in a leisurely manner – give it about 30 seconds each way. While it is marvel to watch, the operation seems clunky, not fluid. Buttoned up, with all four windows closed, the cabin is comfortable. Wind noise is minimal and the front buckets coddle passengers in all the right places. While tight, those of smaller stature will find the two rear seats tolerable for short journeys (my kids never complained). Outward visibility is also very good for a convertible – no impeding B-pillar.
  • Top down driving is pleasant, with wind buffeting minimal even without the optional rear wind deflector (on the window sticker, but missing from my tester). I rolled up the windows, turned the climate-controlled front seats on high, cranked the heater and blasted the impressive 13-speaker Bose audio system. Roofless driving in low 50-degree temperatures was bearable. (Note: When the convertible top is stowed away, the already small trunk is basically nonexistent)
  • Infiniti’s IPL-tweaked V6 looks great on paper, but it struggles to move the droptop with real authority. Blame a curb weight of 4,189 pounds – a whopping 400 pounds more than the IPL G Coupe – and a very uncooperative seven-speed automatic transmission. Peak horsepower and torque come late in the power band, yet the slushbox wants to shift early. While things are slightly better in Sport mode, or with the manual magnesium column-mounted paddle shifters, it doesn’t feel nearly as quick in real-world driving as its published acceleration times would indicate. My overall average fuel economy was also a less-than-impressive 16.8 mpg.
  • Those goofy cannon-size exhaust tips (each is 4.75-inches across) deliver a drone that becomes downright annoying at some speeds. Even more frustrating, there is noticeable body flex – this is not a very stiff convertible – and minor squeaks and groans became evident when the road got rough.
  • The upgraded suspension provides a harsh ride, but little else. The Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires are capable, but when pushed, their narrow front contact patches – only 225/60YR19 – quickly scrubbed in protest of the two-plus tons of mass abusing them. The brakes calipers are beefy, but the street-compound pads don’t instill confidence.
  • A high sticker price, middling performance and other small annoyances really work against the Infiniti IPL G Convertible, especially when you consider that the same money will put a base BMW 335is Convertible, Audi S5 Cabriolet or even a Shelby GT500 Convertible in the driveway.
