TORONTO, March 29 (UPI) — U.S. singer-actress Selena Gomez says she is proud of her new R-rated thriller “Spring Breakers,” but hopes her young fans don’t go to see it.
DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods enjoyed a healthy debut this weekend, topping the box office with $44.7 million, just slightly ahead of what DWA’s How to Train Your Dragon opened with (but with far less glowing reviews than that 2010 release).
The “Die Hard in the White House” action thriller Olympus Has Fallen was good news for its struggling star Gerard Butler, debuting in second place with a rugged $30.5 million.
The Tina Fey-Paul Rudd dramedy Admission had a soft bow in fifth place, while Spring Breakers expanded in limited release up to sixth place.

Selena Gomez asked her youngest followers not to watch her newest movie. How is it possible that the little Disney Princess does not want her fans to see her in her latest film role?
The explanation is very simple, Selena Gomez evolved from a Disney girl next door to a wild sex bomb in the new R-rated independent film, “Spring Breakers.” In the movie, she plays a sexy, heavily-armed college student on a sexy and violent Florida coast vacation, financed by a diner robbery, three friends and some illegal drugs.
She said, at the film’s Hollywood premiere, that she felt she’s getting old enough (she’s 20) to push herself to get into a little bit more of an indie film world and that it’s been “a little awkward, but great.”

Bon Jovi made a lackluster return this week with their 12th studio album “What About Now.” Though the album sticks close to a familiar sound for the group, it lacked the focus and energy of their previous projects. Eric Clapton’s “Old Sock” was praised for its soothing tracks, but the jump in genres was a bit jarring for some reviewers. Rachel Zeffira’s “The Deserters” was marked as a little boring at times and Hurts’ “Exile” debuted to fairly mixed reviews with it’s greatest praise coming from the slick production of the album’s tracks.
In movies, “The Call” fell victim to a ridiculous, unbelievable plot that derailed the film early on and most critics agreed “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” was a silly and painfully unfunny waste of time. “Spring Breakers” received some of the strongest movie reviews this week but some critics felt the film was just a mashup of the same material. Finally, the narrative of “Upside Down” failed to match its beautifully shot scenes resulting in a gorgeous film that lacked substance.

We scouted this week’s premiere party circuit for potential wardrobe malfunctions, and came up with some pretty risky results. (You’re welcome). On the “Spring Breakers” red carpet, Selena Gomez and Ashley Benson debuted in fashion far from Disney territory.
Naturally, a Victoria’s Secret swimwear launch saw comparable amounts of skin, most notably on recently-haloed Angel Karlie Kloss, and Toni Braxton appeared hot and bothered at a premiere of her own.

— Harmony Korine seems to want it both ways, all day, with “Spring Breakers,” his super-stylized descent into a sunbaked hell where bikini-clad, gun-toting college babes serve as our guides.
As writer and director, Korine wants us to be appalled and aroused, hypnotized and titillated. He wants to satirize the debauchery of girls gone wild while simultaneously reveling in it. And damned if he doesn’t pull it off.

From the mischievous mind of Harmony Korine – screenwriter of Kids and director of Mr Lonely and Trash Humpers – comes Spring Breakers, a flashy attack on consumerism and the American dream that plays like an arthouse episode of Girls Gone Wild.
And while it’s hardly mainstream material, the film will doubtless find an audience and generate plenty of column inches thanks to the presence of Tween heroines Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez, both of whom de-Disneyfy their images as the film becomes ever darker and more explicit.
That said, Korine starts as he means to go on and proceedings commence with a lengthy montage of topless girls chugging beers on the beach and licking red, white and blue ice lollies in lengthy slow-motion shots. Subtle it ain’t.

There’s a scene in “Spring Breakers” where its young stars belt out Britney Spears‘ debut single, “… Baby One More Time,” and during a Q&A session at a South by Southwest Film Festival panel, fans managed to pressure the film’s cast into giving an impromptu performance.
On Monday, the film’s stars Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine launched into an a capella verse of Spears’ hit tune, before singing along to the karaoke version of the song. It wasn’t a bad rendition, and it even got the approval of Britney herself:

James Franco‘s queue of projects continues to pile up with a planned adaptation of James Ellroy’s American Tabloid.
MTV reports that Franco plans to direct and star in the film based on the period novel. However, this one sounds like it’s pretty far off for now. Said Franco of the project, “It’s not all put together yet. It’s still early.”
The story follows law enforcement officers Pete Bondurant, Kemper Boyd and Ward Littell from 1958 through 1963, as they’re drawn into the mysterious assassination of U.S. president John F. Kennedy.
In addition to American Tabloid, Franco’s slate of upcoming films includes Oz: The Great and Powerful, Lovelace, Spring Breakers and the ensemble apocalypse comedy This is the End.

The Evil Dead are heading to Austin Texas, with the horror remake playing at the SXSW Film Festival in March.
This year’s event should also kick off with a bang in the shape of opening night premiere The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
The film stars Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi, and tells the tale of warring magicians.
Other films playing at the festival include Alex Winter’s Napster documentary Downloaded and Harmony Korine’s eagerly anticipated Spring Breakers, which stars James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens.
The film strain of the fest runs from March 9-16, with full details here and more movie announcements expected soon.
