Shelby Pumps Ford F-150 Raptor to 575 hp, Earth’s Crust Braces for Imminent Pummeling [2013 New York Auto Show]

By Andrew Wendler

Nissan Tama EV

The only surprising thing about Shelby’s recently unveiled take on Ford’s Raptor is that it took them this long to work one over. After all, Shelby has been operating in near-lockstep with Ford for years, unleashing tuned, tweaked, and twisted versions of Blue Oval products in a reliable cadence.

For the princely starting price of $17,995, the gang at Shelby American will poke and prod a production Raptor’s 6.2-liter V-8 to 575 horsepower, a hearty increase over the stock Raptor’s already randy 411. The additional 164 ponies arrive in the pasture largely due to a 2.9-liter supercharger, a “massive” intercooler, and a Shelby/Borla Exhaust system. Both the supercharger and intercooler come from Whipple (it also supplies Ford Racing with many performance components), as does the ECU re-flash. And you don’t need a brand-spanking-new Raptor to bring it in for the Shelby makeover: John Luft, president of Shelby American, told C/D that current owners are welcome to bring their Raptors to its facility.

Originally slated for a production run of only 100 units, the initial response was so strong Shelby American now says production will be capped at 500. “Not a week goes by without someone asking us about doing a truck, so I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised that we received dozens of phone calls within an hour of its New York debut,” says Luft. Interestingly, most buyers are planning on putting their Raptor to work, not shrink-wrapping it and stowing it away as an investment: “The Raptor will probably see more miles than any other Shelby vehicle,” Luft says, “as the overwhelming amount of buyers have made it clear they want to use their Shelby Raptor as a tow vehicle—preferably for their Shelby track car—or for real off-road use.”

Exterior graphics packages come in three Shelby-fied flavors: faux mud splashes and two stripe packages differentiated only by the hood graphics. The custom Shelby leather interior is designed by Katzkin and is included in the standard package. You can add wheels and tires, light bars, bumpers, and roll bars, and an off-road performance package of unspecified components is in the final stages of development. And it wouldn’t be a Shelby without a badge bearing the signature of Ol’ Shel’ himself and inclusion on the Shelby Registry. Build one for yourself here.

Official: 2014 Ford Cobra Jet announced with new colors, parachute mount

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Ford’s drag-strip-ready Mustang Cobra Jet is back for 2014, and it’s sporting a few changes to make it even better – both in competition and while sitting still. Rolling off the assembly line ready for duty in the NHRA Stock or Super Stock classes, production of the 2014 Cobra Jet is limited to just 50 units.

Racing upgrades for 2014 include the addition of a new three-speed transmission and a parachute mount, and while these will make the car better in the quarter mile, the Cobra Jet‘s new colors will make it look better tearing down the track. Buyers can now get their racecars painted up in Gotta Have-It Green or a custom, Cobra Jet-exclusive matte black hue. Ford and Ford Racing have already teamed up to make this an incredible factory drag racer with a full rollcage, massive Hoosier slicks, a race-tuned suspension setup and a supercharged 5.0-liter V8. Now, if only wheelie bars came standard

Unlike the confusing third-party ordering system announced for the COPO Camaro, all you need to snatch up a 2014 Cobra Jet is $97,990 and good timing (as the cars will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis). Ordering opens up next month with production commencing in July. Check out the press release below.

Motorsports: Ford debuts Fusion NASCAR racer that edges closer to stock [w/video]

By Jeffrey N. Ross

NASCAR Ford Fusion - overlay

Filed under:

The sixth-generation NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar, which will make its competition debut at the 2013 Daytona 500 this weekend, marks the closest thing to a “stock car” that the sport has seen in more than 20 years. No longer using just stickers to distinguish the different brands, the image above shows the lengths NASCAR and automakers went in order to create a racecar design that more closely resembles the individual cars they represent.

Ford, one of the more open and vocal OEMs regarding the Gen6 car’s development, is giving us a closer look at its racing version of the Fusion with a pretty revealing side-by-side comparison with last years’ racer (click above for an expanded view). Aside from the more realistic front end and production-like body lines, the overall shape, dimensions and proportions have also been designed to give the racecar a more stock appearance. Most of the new racer was designed by the Ford Design Center, which the automaker says was the first time it has been so involved in the design process since the 1960s. Of course, one area the Sprint Cup Fusion really differs from the production Fusion is its Ford Racing 5.8-liter V8 producing around 850 hp. Can you say Fusion SVT?

Scroll down for a quick video from Ford Racing showing a production Fusion morph into a Cup car.

They Call It TrackSTer: Ken Block–inspired, 350-hp Ford Focus ST [2013 Chicago Auto Show]

By John Lamm

Fifteen52 and Project ST Focus TrackSTer

Ken Block, famed rallycross and gymkhana driver, is working with Ford and Los Angeles–based tuner fifteen52 to create a burly Ford Focus ST dubbed the Project Focus TrackSTer. The TrackSTer is the first of an intended three-car lineup that offers stepped levels of performance that range from streetable to full-on competition.

Underhood sits the ST’s 2.0-liter direct-injected turbo four, of course, but it’s been augmented by additional parts from Mountune in England. Those include new forged rods and pistons, plus turbo plumbing and an intercooler to go with a larger Garrett turbocharger. Mountune also supplies the ECU. The car was finished just in time for the Chicago auto show, and power is estimated at 350, but the feeling is that output could be cranked to as much as 400 and still be usable on the street. Torque at this point is 380 lb-ft with the potential for 420. A regular ST has 252 horsepower, so, yeah, this sounds ridiculously fun. (The Popeye forearms will be a bonus.)

Teamed with the Ford six-speed manual gearbox are a Quaife limited-slip diff developed for the Focus ST-R race car and a Centerforce Focus ST-R clutch/pressure plate. The TrackSTer squats lower than stock thanks to a coil-over kit and remote reservoirs developed by fifteen52 and Eibach. The wheels are 9.5×18 fifteen52 Tarmacs. The car also incorporates Ford Racing parts, including a short-throw shifter and a performance exhaust that will soon be available to ST owners. The front brakes have been beefed up with ST-R four-piston calipers from StopTech.

Most prominent among the exterior bits are fender flares derived from those used on the Chinese Touring Car Championship Focus. At the back is a Focus RS wing, while the rear extractor is a modified RS piece. The front splitter, ducts, and grille modifications are by fifteen52. Inside, it’s no surprise to find Recaro seats, a Sparco steering wheel, and a four-point harness.

Interested? Don’t get too anxious. Fifteen52 figures it could be up to year before it will be ready to start pumping out customer TrackSTers and, of course, offers no prices yet. When the firm is ready to take orders, the customer will buy their donor car from a dealer and ship it to fifteen52 for the modifications, as is done with some Shelbyfied Mustangs.

Chicago: Ken Block, fifteen52 team up to build awesome Ford Focus TrackSTer

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Ford Focus TrackSTer live at Chicago Auto Show debut - front three-quarter view

Making its debut at the Chicago Auto Show, this Ford TrackSTer is a build done in cooperation between Ford, Ken Block and Los Angeles-based tuner, Fifteen52. Starting with a stock 2013 Ford Focus ST, the TrackSTer received extensive styling and performance enhancements.

Visually, the TrackSTer has a more aggressive look that includes a new front fascia, vented hood, rear fascia diffuser and rear spoiler, but this car stands out the most with its wide, rally-style wheels and partial fender extensions. Interior changes consist of a racing steering wheel, aluminum race pedals and a short-throw shifter. Fifteen52 also made some performance upgrades that include a Ford Racing exhaust system, upgraded internal engine components, a limited-slip differential and a reprogrammed engine controller as well as track-ready parts like intercooler, clutch and brakes.

Scroll down for the press release, but not before checking out our gallery.

Official: Ford reveals Fiesta ST race car, points at road ahead for bigger things in Global RallyCross

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2014 Ford Fiesta ST race car - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

The 2014 Ford Fiesta ST doesn’t go on sale until this summer, but fans of Global RallyCross will be able to catch the car in action before then. Announced ahead of the Chicago Auto Show, the Fiesta ST will be the car run by Ford GRC teams this season, and the model on display in Chicago will be the racecar built by Swedish tuner OlsbergsMSE driven by Tanner Foust and Brian Deegan. Ken Block and his newly renamed Hoonigan Racing Division will also be competing in the Fiesta ST.

The 2013 GRC season has not been announced yet, but the venues will also include the summer X Games events in Brazil, Spain, Germany and, of course, Los Angeles. Ford announced that it will be the sole automotive sponsor of this year’s summer X Games, and it will be looking to bring home a gold medal this year after Block placed silver last year.

In other Ken Block– and Ford-related news, another Chicago debut will be a tuned Focus ST called the TrackSTer project. Built in cooperation with Block, Ford and automotive tuner fifteen52, the TrackSTer will get plenty of styling, performance and handling upgrades. Some of the add-ons include a performance exhaust and short-throw shifter from Ford Racing, a rebuilt engine, upgraded components such as the limited-slip differential, intercooler, engine controller and clutch as well as upgraded brakes.

Scroll down for press releases on both the GRC Fiesta ST and the TrackSTer project.

Auctions: One-off 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra raises $200k for charity at Barrett-Jackson [w/video]

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra

You can count on the fact that there will be plenty of tributes to the late Carroll Shelby over the next several months and years – most of them taking the vehicular shape of the Ford Mustang, we’d wager. The one you see above was created by a group called Friends of Carroll and was unveiled by Edsel Ford II, Ford marketing VP Jim Farley and Shelby American President John Luft at the 2012 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

The 2013 GT500’s stock 662-horsepower 5.8-liter V8 engine has seen its power bumped to an even 850 horses with upgrades provided by Ford Racing. A widebody kit from Shelby covers up the 13-inch-wide rear wheels and 345-series tires. The car is painted in Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes – a classic color combination seen on many Cobra roadsters from the 1960s.

All proceeds from this sale at Barrett-Jackson will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Check out our live image gallery above and peruse a video of the car’s time on the auction block as well as the official auction description below. If you want to have some fun while watching the auction action, click here to take part in the Hagerty Fantasy Bid online game… after all, you could win a new GT500 of your own.

2013 Shelby Ford Focus ST: Stock Motor, Look-Fast Parts [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

By John Lamm

Shelby American is taking the Ford Focus ST and specializing 500 of them for 2013. These “pocket rockets,” as Mr. Shelby himself liked to call them, won’t receive any engine modifications—yet—but they will look and sound considerably meaner than the stock iterations.

A Borla exhaust is added to give the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four a bit of growl. Where that mill resides is a bit of eye candy in its own right, thanks to an engine-dress-up kit that has the look of carbon fiber, but is called Hydrocarbon. Not the organic compound, that’s hydrocarbon, but a process in which carbon-fiber-looking graphics essentially are shrink-wrapped around stock components. It doesn’t save any weight, of course—in fact, it does the opposite—but it saves cost compared to using real carbon fiber. Three months down the road, Shelby plans to introduce a package that will up horsepower by 30 to 50 ponies. In addition to the look-light parts, Shelby has added a Ford Racing suspension package, brake upgrades at all four corners, and a short-throw shifter.

Three appearance packages are available for the Shelby ST, including the classic racing stripes, a competition-look complete with race numbers, or what’s called the Checkered Flag Splash. The grille inserts and the rear spoiler also have been given the faux-carbon-fiber look, but the hood’s heat extractors are functional. The performance brand also has a carbon-fiber hood in the works.

The ST’s original interior is left largely alone, save for the seats. The standard seat coverings have been removed and reupholstered with exterior-color-matching leather and Shelby stitching in the headrests. The only addition to the dash is the numbered plaque to inform passengers precisely which of the Shelby STs they’re riding shotgun in.

The process of attaining a Shelby-fied ST starts at the local Ford dealer. After plunking down the requisite $24,495, your brand-new Focus ST will be shipped to Shelby American HQ in Las Vegas, where a check for $14,995 will cover the rest of the Carroll treatment. Included in that nearly 15 grand is an optional tour of the Shelby museum if you so choose to pick up your new Focus in Vegas, or it can be shipped back to your local dealer.

Detroit: Shelby unveils tuned Ford Focus ST, widebody GT500 Super Snake

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Shelby American has made its name tuning various Ford products, and now the Focus ST can be added to this list. Just introduced at the Detroit Auto Show, the Shelby Focus ST doesn’t add any extra horsepower under the hood, but it should still make sizable gains in performance thanks to an upgraded suspension, brakes and exhaust systems. Also on hand at the Shelby display was a widebody version of the powerful Shelby GT500 Super Snake.

Starting with the already-quick Focus ST, Shelby adds Ford Racing suspension components and bigger brakes with cross-drilled rotors, all finished off with a Borla exhaust system incorporating larger, circular outlets. Cheesy body graphics aside, some of the styling enhancements include functional hood vents, a hatch spoiler, unique interior bits and wider wheels and tires. Shelby does mention a tuning option that will increase the engine’s 252-horsepower output to more than 300, although no pricing is mentioned. Speaking of price, Shelby says this souped-up hot hatch will carry a “budget minded price” (*ahem*). What is that you ask? Well, after you buy a 2013 Focus ST from your local Ford dealer (base price: $23,700), the Shelby upgrades will cost an extra $14,995. Production of these cars will be limited to just 500 units.

As for the Super Snake, Shelby is giving the car a wider optional body kit to accommodate the 10-inch front and 13-inch rear wheels. Customer can choose just the wider units at the rear or at all four corners. Opting for a “stock” 662-hp Super Snake will cost $28,995 on top of the cost of the Ford Shelby GT500, and if you’re really flush with disposable income, there’s a tuned 850-hp version for $39,995 (the widebody package is an extra $14,995). Scroll down for the official press release from Shelby.
