Samsung Comes Up Short in the Next Evolution of the Smartphone Wars

The arms race for global smartphone superiority heated up once again Thursday night, as the second major smartphone launch of 2013 took place at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. There, South Korean electronics giant Samsung lifted the curtain on the latest edition of its best-selling Galaxy line of smartphones — the Galaxy S4.

After a banner 2012 in which Samsung claimed the top spot for global smartphone and generated the majority of the profits among handset makers using Google‘s Android mobile OS, last night’s launch ushered in what’s likely to be the next chapter in Samsung’s amazing run in the smartphone space.

Much was made of what would and wouldn’t appear in the device in the week leading up to yesterday. Now that we know, here’s what investors and consumers will get in Samsung’s latest and greatest.

The Galaxy S4 unpacked
I was fortunate enough to attend the launch with a few fellow Fools, and one thing was abundantly clear: Samsung’s strategy with this phone centers mainly on software.

Although the basic OS was the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean many expected, Samsung layered a number of new programs and features on top of it, all of which are aimed squarely at challenging arrival Apple in their perennial battle for handset dominance. Here’s a short list of some of the new software features Samsung packed into its latest handset.

Samsung repeatedly touted the idea that the S4 is more than simply a phone, calling it a “life companion.” Although that sounds more like a spouse than a piece of technology, the notion is clear that the Galaxy S4 is intended to cater to every aspect of its users’ increasingly mobile lives.

On the personal side of things, many of the new features center on the camera, and for good reason. The camera itself underwent a major upgrade this time around. The back-facing camera now comes in at a whopping 13 megapixels, and the front-facing camera a respectable 2 megapixels. The software supporting that camera comes with a bevy of features that allow the users to do things like use the front and back-facing camera in a single shot, include sound with pictures, and splice a sequence of images into a single frame. Definitely neat.

On the productivity side of things, Samsung touted its new Knox software, which completely segments a user’s personal and professional content. This idea lines Samsung up to further tap into the BYOD movement that’s gaining momentum with tech-savvy corporations. It’s also been done before. Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry introduced a nearly identical feature called BlackBerry Balance when it launched its next-gen BB10 operating system in January.

And for being a software-driven phone, the hardware certainly isn’t a slouch, either, keeping with the engineering theme we saw in the iPhone 5 — bigger, thinner, faster. It’s almost hard to remember the days when a chief information officer, or CIO, would dictate the devices and software you’d use at work. That started to change when the Web and open standards rose to prominence and made data sharing across different platforms easier. That, in turn, freed users to choose to work with the devices they liked best.

Today, many companies have “BYOD,” or “bring your own device,” policies that cater to these control freaks. And none has benefited more than Apple , which has seen legions of fans bring iPhones to work rather than opt for company-approved BlackBerry alternatives.

But there are limits to the allowable chaos. Accordingly, Dropbox, a popular file sharing service that’s used in 95% of Fortune 500 organizations, just recently announced administrative tools to make it easier for CIOs to monitor those who use the software at work.

When alien hardware invades: 4 keys to BYOD success

We all love our gadgets, but some of our favorite devices, however innocent they may appear, are poised to overwhelm IT departments worldwide.

Like it or not, the “bring your own device,” or BYOD, trend is now a permanent fixture among businesses big and small. Sure, some companies still prohibit employees from integrating personal laptops, tablets, and smartphones into their IT infrastructures, but their numbers are quickly dwindling. BYOD is a matter of “when” not “if,” so businesses and IT admins must understand the risks involved and determine the most effective and secure ways to embrace all these alien gadgets.

When Paul Proctor, vice president and security analyst for Gartner, moderated a panel discussion on BYOD at the RSA Security conference in San Francisco this week, he classified four different approaches to BYOD: containerization, embrace, block, and ignore.

“Containerization” allows for BYOD but carves out a separate space for business-related data and communications. Meanwhile, companies that “embrace” BYOD have a no-holds-barred, bring-it-on ethos when it comes to hardware and security management. “Block” characterizes companies that actively ban BYOD, while “ignore” describes organizations that pretend the issue doesn’t exist.

iOS plus inspired design equals awesome 'iWatch'

Rumors have abounded this month that Apple is designing a smart watch—maybe even  a flexible-glass, slap-bracelet type of device. As cool as that sounds, an “iWatch” needs to be equal parts form and function for working adults to take it seriously. There’s still no confirmation that such a device is being developed, but let’s consider what it would take for it to have a serious impact on mobile productivity. 

Businesses are still coming to grips with the consumerization of IT and the BYOD (bring your own device) trend, with smartphones and tablets entering the workplace. Wearable tech could bring a whole new shift in mobile computing. What if an iWatch were a mobile command center that lets you get things done more efficiently? You could read email, check your schedule, set reminders, and video conference right on your wrist. An added bonus is that you’re less likely to drop or lose a device worn on your wrist.

Origins of the ‘iWatch’

I got an iPod Nano and an accompanying band to wear the device as a watch for Christmas in 2011. It’s impressive as a watch, with a variety of clock face designs to choose from, a built-in radio, Nike+ fitness functionality—and it syncs up with music and photos from my PC. But, it’s not an iOS device, and doesn’t really live up to its potential.

5 reasons to stick with BlackBerry, and 5 reasons to bail

BlackBerry customers are at a crossroads: Either stick with BlackBerry or switch to some other smartphone platform. If you’re still using a BlackBerry, then you’ve probably grown tired of watching the smartphone world pass you by. However, the new BlackBerry 10 OS is here, and the BlackBerry Z10 is selling fairly well out of the gate.

Let me be clear; I’m not arguing whether people in the market for a new smartphone should consider a BlackBerry Z10 over, say, an iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy SIII. That’s certainly a debate worth having, but I’m focusing specifically on whether existing BlackBerry customers should stay the course. If you’re on the fence, here are arguments both in favor of and against staying loyal to BlackBerry.

Reasons to stay the course

BlackBerry has reinvented itself with BB10 and the Z10 smartphone.

1. Balance

Businesses that either provide BlackBerry smartphones, or that allow workers to use their own smartphones through a BYOD (“bring your own device”) policy, need to be able to protect company data. Kaspersky launches all-in-one security tool for SMBs

Companies have to manage security across a wide range of issues and threats. Operating systems and applications have to be patched and updated. Active monitoring needs to be in place to identify and block malware threats. Data needs to be protected to prevent exposure or compromise. Mobile devices and the  BYOD (bring your own device) trend represent a new frontier of concerns.

Kaspersky intends to simplify the process for all of the above issues. Its new Endpoint Security for Business merges all of these functions into one product so that small and midsize business IT managers can see and control every aspect of security from one console.

Kaspersky Lab has been at the forefront of research into sophisticated cyber espionage attacks like Flame, Gauss, and Red October—insidious attacks that have compromised and exploited targets for years. The Moscow-based antimalware and computer security company unveiled the new Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business at an analyst event last week in New York.

Part of the problem, particularly for SMBs, is that there are too many moving parts involved. “Complexity is the enemy of security,” said chief product officer Petr Merkulov.

Could a personal avatar juggle our cross-platform lives?

Hewlett-Packard researchers are developing a cloud-based “avatar” to manage all of a user’s mobile devices and wireless networks.

Their idea is to give individual users an identity that transcends the many smartphones, tablets, and other devices they may carry, as well as all the Wi-Fi and cellular networks they use in different situations. HP‘s avatar would pick the best combination of hardware and network for each situation and automatically set up and take down connections, said HP Fellow Paul Congdon, who works in the company’s Networking & Communications Lab.

For employees and consumers, getting the avatar might be as easy as downloading a mobile app, but the guts of the system would be a cloud-based software platform that HP could offer as a service to enterprises and carriers. The concept, called Mobile Personal Grid, was one recent development that HP researchers presented at a media event last week.

Help for network managers

The avatar could help enterprises administer BYOD (bring your own device) policies and make life easier for mobile users who want to stay online in the fastest, cheapest way possible, according to HP. Today, much of the effort involved is manual.

RIM's mobile management software supports iOS, Android

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has announced new mobile management software that adds support for Apple and Android devices, but analysts say time will tell if the company’s new emphasis on bring-your-own-device (BYOD) will succeed.

RIM announced BlackBerry Enterprise Server 10 (BES 10) is available to download as of today. The product combines mobile device management (MDM), mobile application management and mobile security. Unlike previous versions, BES 10 enables BYOD with support for Android and iOS devices in addition to BlackBerry.

The decision to support non-BlackBerry devices “was really driven by our customers,” RIM senior director of enterprise product management, Jeff Holleran, told Computerworld Australia.
