Security firm offers enhanced web application defense

Imperva used this week’s Infosecurity Show in London to announce what it believes is a key innovation for its line of web application firewalls – crowd-sourced threat data.

Called ThreatRadar Community Defense and incorporated into the firm’s latest SecureSphere 10.0 release, the system analyzes attack patterns detected hitting the networks of participating customers, which are then fed into its reputation protection and policies in what is said to be close to real-time.

According to the company’s analysis of 60 web applications, this type of pattern analysis across offers better defense against the types of large-scale attacks experienced by its customer base.

“Together, Imperva ThreatRadar Reputation Services and Community Defense pull crowd-sourced data from around the world to provide heightened insight into the identity of these attackers,” said Imperva’s co-founder and CTO, Amichai Shulman.

Why Software-Defined Data Centers Cost Much More Without Optimized Power and Cooling

By Dan Woods, Contributor

With all the talk of the software-defined everything, you can quickly get the impression that we have freed ourselves completely from the physical world. Indeed, software-defined servers, networks, and storage allow an unprecedented degree of flexibility, but the picture is still incomplete. To really conquer the challenges of reliability and optimization of resources, you have to add software-defined power and cooling to the mix. Without these capabilities, according to Clemens Pfeiffer, CTO of Power Assure, your software-defined data center has a good chance of running into any number of brick walls. …read more

Patch Tuesday leaves Internet Explorer zero day untouched

It’s Patch Tuesday time again. This month Microsoft has unleashed nine new security bulletins. Nine is a reasonably high number of updates, however, only two of them are rated as Critical. So, it’s actually a little more laid back than most months, but there’s still cause for concern.

There are seven security bulletins rated as Important, which affect a range of platforms and services including Active Directory, the Windows antimalware client, and the Windows Kernel. The two Critical security bulletins apply to Internet Explorer and Remote Desktop. Be prepared—most of the patches require a reboot.

Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys, suggests that IT admins focus on Internet Explorer first. “This month, the most important bulletin to apply to your infrastructure is MS13-028, which contains a new release of Internet Explorer (IE) covering all versions of the browser starting with IE6 going to IE10, and also including Windows RT, the operating system for mobile devices and tablets.”

Andrew Storms, director of security operations for nCircle (a Tripwire company), agrees that Internet Explorer deserves attention, but adds that Internet Explorer lacks its usual “patch immediately” urgency. Microsoft has assigned the underlying IE flaws with an exploit index rating of two, which indicates that Microsoft believes they are exceptionally difficult to exploit, and there’s not likely to be a successful exploit in the next 30 days.

DTS and Fairlight Collaborate to Deliver the Industry’s First Next-Generation 3D Audio Creation Platform to Support MDA

MDA, an Open Object-based Audio Specification, Answers the Industry’s Demand for a Non-Proprietary Solution for Next-Gen Content Creation

CALABASAS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– DTS, Inc. (NAS: DTSI) , a pioneer in next generation ultra high-definition audio solutions and audio enhancement technologies, and Fairlight, a leader in audio and video post production solutions, today collaboratively announced the release of Fairlight’s new 3DAW, a 3D audio production platform with native MDA mixing and format support. Answering the industry’s demand for an open next-generation audio format, DTS worked with experts in the content creation community to create the MDA specification.

In January of this year, DTS publicly announced its intent to provide MDA to the industry as an open object-based audio authoring format, as the industry looks to avoid a format war for next-gen content creation and cinema delivery. Today, the standardization work continues to formalize the specification, while industry leaders such as Fairlight jump ahead of the curve by working with DTS to integrate MDA into their new 3DAW solution. The first of its kind, Fairlight’s 3DAW enables sound designers to truly mix object-based audio in unrestricted 3D space, monitor on any configuration, and output in DTS‘ proposed future specification—MDA. Additionally, Fairlight’s 3DAW will feature the ability to mix soundtracks for DTS Neo:X™, a channel-based audio solution designed to support up to an 11.1 speaker system.

“We are delighted to be working with DTS to equip our all new 3DAW production station with MDA authoring capability,” said Tino Fibaek, CTO at Fairlight. “Together, we can now offer studios a highly anticipated alternative to the closed proprietary object-based audio formats being proposed to date.”

The MDA specification is currently being proposed to international standardization committees as an alternative to today’s closed proprietary solutions. MDA allows every sound element of a soundtrack to be mapped in 3D space, storing all of the spatial and behavioral information of each sound element as metadata. Mixing audio with MDA as opposed to other surround sound platforms allows a soundtrack to maintain the exact spatial characteristics of the audio as intended by the mixer. With overwhelming interest from the entertainment industry, MDA has already garnered support from major studios and networks, while content tool providers have begun developing new authoring solutions for the MDA format.

Security experts laud Apple for following Microsoft, others on two-factor authentication

Security experts are commending Apple for following the lead of rivals like Facebook, Google and Microsoft by offering two-step authentication to help customers secure their Apple IDs against hacking.

The new feature rolled out this week is designed to block unauthorized changes to iCloud or iTunes accounts, and keep hackers who steal Apple IDs from purchasing digital content or hardware using the credit cards stored in customers’ iTunes and Apple Store accounts.

iTunes users in particular have complained for years about security so lax that hackers have easily hijacked their accounts to run up big bills.

“Always exciting to see a major consumer-oriented service roll out some sort of two-factor authentication,” said Jon Oberheide, co-founder and CTO of Duo Security, a developer of authentication software, in an email. “Rolling your own two-factor definitely isn’t a trivial task, both from an upfront engineering cost and continued support and maintenance, despite the perceived ease from an external view.”

Belden Research Shows that Patching for Industrial Cyber Security is a Broken Model

Tofino “Security Profiles” are an Effective Alternative

ST. LOUIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Belden Inc. (NYS: BDC) , a global leader in signal transmission solutions for mission-critical applications, announces that its Tofino Security brand has published new research showing that patching is often ineffective in providing protection from the multitude of vulnerability disclosures and malware targeting critical infrastructure systems today. While patching such systems is important as part of an overall Defense in Depth strategy, the difficulties of patching for industrial systems mean that compensating controls such as Tofino Security Profiles are often a better method of providing immediate protection.

Since the discovery of the Stuxnet malware in 2010, industrial infrastructure has become a key target for security researchers, hackers, and government agents. Designed years ago with a focus on reliability and safety, rather than security, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Industrial Control Systems (ICS) products are often easy to exploit. As a result, there has been exponential growth in government security alerts for these systems in the past two years. In addition, they have attracted some of the most sophisticated (Stuxnet, Night Dragon, Flame) and damaging (Shamoon) cyberattacks on record.

Eric Byres, CTO and vice president of engineering at Tofino Security, investigated the effectiveness of patching for protecting control systems from vulnerability exploits and malware. His work revealed that:

  • The number of vulnerabilities existing in SCADA/ICS applications is high, with as many as 1,805 yet to be discovered vulnerabilities existing on some control system computers.
  • The frequency of patching needed to address future SCADA/ICS vulnerabilities in both controllers and computers likely exceeds the tolerance of most SCADA/ICS operators for system shutdowns. Unlike IT systems, most industrial processes operate 24×7 and demand high uptime. Weekly shutdowns for patching are unacceptable.

Samji Chooses Small Cell Solution from Radisys and Mindspeed for Its Next-Generation Pico Cell Roll-out

Radisys’ Trillium TOTALeNodeB software solution and Mindspeed’s T3300 small cell silicon support residential through Pico cell deployments, delivering maximum scalability and performance

HILLSBORO, Ore.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Radisys® Corporation (NAS: RSYS) , a market leader enabling wireless infrastructure solutions, today announced that Samji has selected Radisys’ Trillium® TOTALeNodeB small cell software for its next-generation Pico cell deployments on Mindspeed Technologies’ T3300 small cell silicon. Subscriber demand for more bandwidth and everywhere connectivity is driving the rapid deployment of LTE small cells, including a layer of higher capacity small cells working in conjunction with the Macro cell network. This heterogeneous network, or HetNet, delivers the increased capacity and coverage required for public areas. Samji selected TOTALeNodeB because of its ability to easily scale for multiple types of small cell deployments, from residential and enterprise to public access including Metro, Micro and Pico, enabling Samji to support key operators such as LG-U+ with a solution that meets multiple deployment models. In addition, the combined Radisys and Mindspeed solution delivers maximum performance for 10 and 20 MHz with 100+ users.

“We turned to Radisys as it could deliver one primary software solution that supports all of our small cell deployments across the network, from residential cells that support up to eight users to Pico cells that support 100+ users,” said Chong-Youn Chun, vice president and CTO, Samji. “This scalability combined with the integral support of Radisys’ system architects who joined with our engineering team to deliver the best solution punctuates why Radisys was best equipped to help us deploy rapidly.”

“By selecting TOTALeNodeB, Samji can take advantage of our investment in interoperability and testing, feature differentiation and management software for all of its small cell deployments,” said Amit Agarwal, vice president and general manager, Software and Solutions, Radisys. “In addition, our close partnership with Mindspeed and integration with its T3300 small cell silicon further enabled Samji’s seamless Pico cell development and deployment.”

Trillium TOTALeNodeB software includes the necessary Radio Resource Management (RRM), Self-Organizing Network (SON) and Operations and Maintenance (O&M) functionality necessary for rapid deployment, and is built on top of the proven Trillium LTE protocol stacks. It provides Telecom Equipment Manufacturers with a complete, integrated LTE eNodeB that is verified across the leading small cell system on a chip (SoC) platforms from Radisys’ premier silicon partners, including Mindspeed.

Scary flaw makes your USB ports a major security risk

It’s the second Tuesday in March, which means that it’s also the third Patch Tuesday of 2013. Microsoft released seven new security bulletins today, with four rated as “critical,” but security experts are particularly concerned about a flaw rated as merely “important” that exposes your Windows PCs to major risk.

Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys, notes in a blog post that the number of security bulletins is about par for the course for Microsoft. He adds, “In technical terms though we are seeing some interesting vulnerabilities that definitely rate higher-than-average.”

For starters, there is a cumulative security update for Internet Explorer (MS13-021). It addresses nine separate vulnerabilities, one of which has had exploit code circulating in the wild for the past month. Kandek urges IT admins to apply this update as soon as possible.

“Every supported version of Internet Explorer (6 through 10) is affected, thus implicitly making all supported Windows platforms (including Windows RT) a target for attackers,” points out BeyondTrust CTO Marc Maiffret.
