Catholic universities offer support to Boston College on condom giveaway stance

Boston College is getting support from prominent Catholic universities in its efforts to stop a student group from giving away condoms on campus.

According to the Boston Globe, officials at Catholic colleges and universities – including Notre Dame, Georgetown and Catholic University – say their policies are similar to that of Boston College, which threatened disciplinary action against students distributing condoms on school grounds.

“One of the teachings of our faith is that contraception is morally unacceptable,” Victor Nakas, a spokesman for Catholic University, told the paper. “Since condoms are a form of contraception, we do not permit their distribution on campus.”

A letter sent by Boston College telling on-campus groups they could face disciplinary action for a condom giveaway provoked angry reactions from students, and the American Civil Liberties Union said it might pursue legal action.

BC is saying that they’re a private university, so we can do what we want,” said Sarah Wunsch, staff lawyer at the ACLU of Massachusetts. “But that’s actually not true.”

According to the Globe, Wunsch cited the Massachusetts Civil Rights Act of 1979, which prohibits interference with civil rights by private as well as public entities. She cited a court case lost by Boston University in the 1980s after the institution attempted to force students to remove an antiapartheid poster from their dorm windows. In that case, the judge ruled that the state Civil Rights Act protected the free speech rights of the students, even though they attended a private school.

Most Catholic universities agree when it comes to distributing contraception on campus, said Michael Galligan-Stierle, president of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.

Galligan-Stierle said Catholic educational institutions follow John Paul II’s “Ex Corde Ecclesiae,” a document he issued on church principles in 1990. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a US-specific interpretation of John Paul‘s document in 2001.

“There are certain ways of living that we, Catholics, believe lead to a healthier and holier life,” Galligan-Stierle said, according to the Globe. “This falls into one of many of those ways.”

Boston College: Students Can't Give Out Condoms

By Evann Gastaldo Attending a Catholic university and distributing condoms on campus apparently don’t mix. Boston College students could face disciplinary action for distributing condoms

In an e-mail, Boston College officials said they may take disciplinary action against its own students who are distributing condoms out of their dorm rooms, MyFoxBoston.com reported.

The unsanctioned program called “B.C. Students for Student Health” offers dozens of locations where students can pick up condoms and pamphlets about sexual health.

The e-mail sent to students indicates that the student health group could be in violation of university police if they are found circulating condoms throughout the campus.

“As a Jesuit, Catholic university there are certain Catholic commitments that we are called to uphold,” says university spokesperson Jack Dunn. “All we ask of our students is that they respect these commitments and the values upon which they are based.”

Dunn goes on to say that this group has been warned “repeatedly” that the distribution of condoms is not in line with the values of Boston College. He adds that the group has been invited to meet with administrators to discuss the matter, however if they continue distributing the condoms they will face disciplinary action.

“If they persist in their actions, however, they face disciplinary sanctions as would any other students who violate university policy,” Dunn explains.

Financial Advice for the Sandwich Generation

By Molly McCluskey

UPPER MARLBORO, MD- AUGUST 16: Daniel Sherrett, 28, who returned home to live with his mother, Marie, and older brother Mark, 31, after completing his bachelor's degree at the Culinary Institute of America, prepares dinner as part of his deal to live at home, on Tuesday, August 16, 2011. Between the growing number of adult children moving back in with their parents, and a growing population of senior citizens becoming financially dependent on their children, the Sandwich Generation can’t seem to catch a break.

Nearly half of all adults between the ages of 40-59 are giving financial support either to a parent over the age of 65 or to their offspring. Nearly one in seven adults are supporting both. So says a new study by Pew on the rising financial burdens of those adults — the generation that overlaps both the Baby Boomers and Generation X.

Multigenerational Impacts of Unemployment

The middle-aged Sandwich Generation has been hit especially hard by the recession and its aftermath. With unemployment still at 7.7 percent in February, and mass layoffs of nearly 135,000 in January alone, the long-term financial pressure is hitting those supporting multiple generations particularly hard.

Older parents may face forced retirement, and its sudden impacts. Parents of teens may face impending college expenses. Grown children with children of their own may suddenly face their own unemployment and be forced to move back home.

Although older workers were more likely to have held onto their jobs during the recession than their less experienced counterparts, workers over 50 who were laid off during the recession are finding it difficult to find new work. Too young to retire, this age group was recently called “the new unemployable” by the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College.

Meanwhile, younger workers are less likely to be employed than they were just a few years ago, and those with jobs are earning lower wages, due in part to the competition from older, underemployed workers willing to work for less.

How to Navigate the New Terrain

Even though being financially sandwiched seems like being stuck in a vise that can only get tighter, with tax breaks and deductions for long-term care, retirement planning doesn’t have to be a pipe dream. If you find yourself in this situation, here’s some advice:

Don’t dip into savings: Sandwichers should avoid dipping into personal and retirement savings if possible. Instead, evaluate all options for both the care of parents and the well-being of children. Investigating long-term care insurance before it’s needed for aging parents, and knowing what expenses will have to be paid out-of-pocket might help make difficult decisions easier.

Explore all cost-savings options: Families with students heading off to college should explore less expensive options. …read more

Speculation mounts on who will be next pope

By Joshua Rhett Miller

The likely successor to Pope Benedict XVI will continue his conservative vision with a younger, more energetic outlook and perhaps hail from Africa, Asia or Latin America, religious experts told FoxNews.com.

The decision by the 85-year-old pope to step down sets the stage for a conclave next month to elect a new leader for a Roman Catholic church carefully navigating a global clerical sex abuse scandal and other hurdles, including declining membership. Several theologians told FoxNews.com they expect the next leader of the billion-member church to continue Benedict’s conservatism, especially since the bulk of the College of Cardinals was selected by Benedict himself.

“The entire College of Cardinals has been appointed by Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI, therefore it’s extraordinarily unlikely that the next pope will not reflect their collective interpretation of the council, which means in worldly terms, a conservative pope,” said R.R. Reno, editor of First Things magazine and professor of theology at Creighton University, in Omaha, Neb. “So the question is whether the College of Cardinals wants another ‘professor pope’ or do they want someone to kind of deal with the Vatican bureaucracy, or a diplomat?

“I’m not a handicapper and I couldn’t begin to speculate,” he said. “But the common wisdom is these things swing like a pendulum.”

William Hill, Britain’s largest bookmaker, offered odds of 3/1 against for Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze, who is 80 and was once the world’s youngest bishop. Odds were set at 7/2 for Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet and Ghanian Cardinal Peter Turkson.

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power had the same trio as frontrunners, but made Ouellet the favorite. Britain’s Ladbrokes had Turkson the leading contender.

Other possible successors include Cardinal Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, the archbishop of Vienna and Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras.

Whomever is selected, Reno said, will have the initial task of providing a “strong, clear identity and purpose” internationally, particularly in Europe and throughout Latin America.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York is a “long shot” at best, Reno said.

“It’s not clear that the rest of the church would accept American hegemony,” he said, despite the fact that Dolan backs the pope’s conservative vision.

Rev. James Bretzke, a professor of moral theology at Boston College, told FoxNews.com he sees the decision going one of two ways.

“There will be debate and discussion that will pull in two directions: younger and more energetic, but more or less the same theologically with [Benedict],” Bretzke said. “And the other major consideration would be to look specifically for a face that represents the emerging church in Africa, Asia and possibly Latin America.”

Turkson, 64, of Ghana is seen as the leading candidate from Africa, Bretzke said. He currently heads the Vatican’s office for justice and peace. Another possible candidate is Cardinal Antonio Tagle, the archbishop of Manila, but at age 56 he is considered far too young.

“But he’s very well respected,” Bretzke said of Tagle.

Within Latin America, Bretzke cited Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio — archbishop of Buenos Aires — as the …read more
