Auctions: Shelby Cobra, Mercedes 300SL and 1947 Woodie from Petersen Museum headed to auction

The changes happening at the Petersen Museum have been making the rounds in major press, but it probably won’t be until August 18, during Pebble Beach, when we get the full story on what’s happening; that’s where and when museum reps plan on announcing the way forward for the SoCal institution. In the meantime, the museum is still reorganizing its collection, and that means auctioning some of its showpieces at this weekend’s Auctions America event in Burbank.

Three of the stars are a 1964 Shelby Cobra 289, one of less than 20 produced with a three-speed C-4 automatic transmission, a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL owned by actor Robert Stack and the last 1948 Ford Sportsman ‘Woodie’ ever produced. The Cobra, now restored to its original white exterior and red leather interior, was a factory demonstrator that first sold for $5,250. Showing just 38,950 miles on the odometer, its pre-sale estimate is $800,000 to $1 million.

The 300SL is actually a 1957 model but wasn’t titled until Robert Stack took possession in 1960. The lead actor in the The Untouchables TV series used to drive by the Sunset Boulevard Mercedes dealership to ogle the car, but couldn’t justify spending the money to buy it. When he and the producer of The Untouchables won Emmys for the show, the producer, who happened to be Desi Arnaz, bought the car for Stack. He owned it his whole life, it has been left as Stack drove it and still bears the California license plate “UNTCHBL.”

The 100-horsepower 1947 Woodie is considered to be the last Sportsman ever built, one of just 28 examples produced that year. It’s been thoroughly restored and returned to its Maize Yellow hue, with the original Birdseye Maple along its flanks and gray cardboard lining in its trunk.

They will go up on the plinth with rarities like a Jaguar XJ220, 1974 Mercedes-Benz 600 LWB Pullman Limousine and 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona. You can read about the cars and the auction in the press releases below.

It isn’t every day that the rarest of Ferrari models change hands. In fact, you can count your fingers to get the number of 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spyders that ever existed. The 1967 Ferrari you see here is one of those ten Spyders, and it has stayed in the same family since it was bought new.

The car was bought through Luigi Chinetti, Ferrari’s US importer at the time, by the late Eddie Smith Sr., a Ferrari collector and businessman from North Carolina. Smith kept it – and kept driving it – until the day he died six years ago. Since then, this remarkable machine has been collecting dust. Smith’s son, Eddie Smith Jr., spent some time with Petrolicious to give a history of the car and explain why he and his family are going to do the one thing his father never could: sell it. The catch? All of the money it earns on the auction block will be donated to charity.

“It’ll be a bittersweet thing, because we know the fact that all the money is going to charities that he would approve of,” Smith Jr. said about his father, and it “will really make him smile, because he loved to give back.”

Pininfarina to Reveal Sergio Concept in Honor of Italian Coachbuilder’s Longtime Owner [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina is launching a concept car in honor of its longtime owner and president, Sergio Pininfarina, who died last year. The 2013 Geneva auto show will see a concept car that “will be necessarily called Sergio,” according to the brand.

Details about the Sergio are scarce at the moment; a teaser image provided by the company reveals what could be the rear fender and an engine cover that could be hiding a centrally mounted engine. Pininfarina will say only that the Sergio is “a modern vision in the name of exclusivity, innovation, and passion.”

Sergio Pininfarina is not the founder of the company that bears his name, but he has shaped it in the 40-some years since he took over after the death of his father Battista Pininfarina in 1966. Even after Pininfarina, himself, stepped down, he continued to be a public and industrial figure.

Together with Bertone and Italdesign, Pininfarina was one of the three Italian design houses that largely shaped automotive design from the 1960s to the 1980s. Pininfarina was a longtime “house designer” for Peugeot and Ferrari, until in-house design departments grew in significance. His portfolio includes icons such as the Peugeot 504 coupe and cabriolet, the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, and the Fiat 124 Spider.

2013 RM Arizona Auction - Ferrari for sale

Although the vast majority of eyeballs were tuned to the madness at Barrett-Jackson this past weekend, that televised car auction wasn’t the only high-dollar game in Arizona. RM Auctions brought its usual gaggle of exotic wares to the desert, and the car that came out on top sold for much more than Barrett-Jackson’s highest sale, the Batmobile.

Coming out on top at RM last weekend was Lot 164, a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta ‘Competizione’ that sold for a massive $8,140,000 – the buyer could’ve nearly bought two Barris Batmobiles for that chunk of change. Lot 122, a 1967 Shelby 427 ‘Semi-Competition’ Cobra, stood at $2,007,500 in second place, just in front of Lot 145, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, which sold for $1,842,500.

After all said and done, RM reported $36.4 million in sales. That’s a record for RM in Arizona, even though the total number of lots for 2013 was reduced significantly. 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray at Barrett-Jackson

In case you happened to miss it, the 2013 edition the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, has come and gone. And, as usual, Autoblog was there in full force on the two biggest days of the event, Friday and Saturday.

Here are some of the most interesting statistics from the week-long event:

  • A total of 1,343 cars were sold
  • The $108,766,069 in gross sales is a 17% increase over 2012
  • 300,000 peak attendance
  • At $4.62 million, the 1966 Batmobile was the most expensive car sold
  • The first 2014 Corvette Stingray sent $1.1 million to charity
  • Each of the top 10 sales topped a million dollars

1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

We love the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona. It’s most definitely a classic, made famous in part by its appearance as Don Johnson‘s favored ride in the classic ’80s television series Miami Vice… but we won’t hold that against it.

The specific example you see above just crossed the block at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson extravaganza in Scottsdale, and it cleared a cool $495,000 after the buyer’s commission was factored in. The 1972 Daytona features a sweet-sounding V12 engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
