Thousands of giant snails causing problems for Florida homeowners

South Florida residents are being warned to be on the lookout for one of the world’s most destructive invasive species: the giant African land snail, which can grow as big as a rat.

The huge mollusks were first spotted in Florida in 2011, and their numbers are growing, Reuters reports. More than 1,000 are being caught each week in Miami-Dade County and more will continue to emerge from hibernation in the coming weeks.

The snails can gnaw through stucco and plastic, and attack “over 500 known species of plants … pretty much anything that’s in their path and green,” Denise Feiber, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, told Reuters.

In some Caribbean countries, such as Barbados, which are overrun with the creatures, the snails’ shells blow out tires on the highway and turn into hurling projectiles from lawnmower blades, while their slime and excrement coat walls and pavement.

“It becomes a slick mess,” Feiber said

A typical snail can produce about 1,200 eggs a year and the creatures are a particular pest in homes because of their fondness for stucco, devoured for the calcium content they need for their shells.

The snails also carry a parasitic rat lungworm that can cause illness in humans, including a form of meningitis, Feiber said, although no such cases have yet been identified in the United States.

Experts gathered last week in Gainesville, Florida, for a Giant African Land Snail Science Symposium, to seek the best ways to eradicate the mollusks, including use of a stronger bait approved recently by the federal government.

Authorities are also expanding a series of ads across the state on buses, billboards and movie theaters, urging the public to be on the lookout.

“They’re huge, they move around, they look like they’re looking at you … communicating with you, and people enjoy them for that,” Feiber said. “But they don’t realize the devastation they can create if they are released into the environment where they don’t have any natural enemies and they thrive.”

Caribbean nations search for oil amid spill fears

The turquoise waters that have long brought treasure seekers to the Caribbean now are drawing a new kind of explorer as countries across the region increasingly open their seas to oil exploration.

From the Bahamas and Cuba down to Aruba and Suriname, international oil companies are lining up to locate potentially rich offshore deposits in the Caribbean. The countries hope drilling could lead to a black-gold bonanza, easing demand for imported oil and diversifying their economies.

It’s a longstanding dream for many. As the Dominican songwriter Juan Luis Guerra once sang, “If petroleum sprang from here, oh but there would be light and hope.”

So far, the twin-island nation of Trinidad & Tobago is the only major hydrocarbons producer in the Caribbean, and its waters are crowded with offshore platforms. The country sits just about seven miles (11 kilometers) off the coast of Venezuela, which has the world’s largest proven oil reserves. It’s pushing hard into deep-water drilling and has signed production-sharing contracts with British oil company BP for new exploration blocks.

A growing number of other Caribbean nations are also authorizing or at least aggressively pursuing offshore exploration.

The Bahamas recently announced it would try offshore exploratory drilling and said it should have enough information by late 2014 to decide whether it can move forward with production. A voter referendum would first have to decide the matter. Bahamas Petroleum Company CEO Simon Potter said a rig will drill to subsea depths of roughly 22,000 feet (6,705 meters) in some 1,600 feet (488 meters) of water adjacent to Cuba‘s offshore territory.

Barbados and Jamaica have also been seeking well exploration in their seas, while the Anglo-Dutch group Shell announced in December it was preparing to sink its third offshore well in nearby French Guiana, an overseas French department, with other companies also exploring in deep waters there.

“What once was a trickle is fast becoming a stream in the Caribbean, with new announcements of expanding deep-water exploration lease offerings and drilling permits being issued,” said Lee Hunt, a Houston-based consultant who retired last year as the longtime president of the International Association of Drilling Contractors.

The push for exploration has been fed partly by worries that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez‘s nearly two-year-long cancer fight and March 5 death would affect a Venezuelan aid program called PetroCaribe that sells petroleum to 17 Caribbean countries on preferential terms.

DHS Allowing Easy Access To US For Possible Saudi Terrorists

By Breaking News

Napolitano SC DHS Allowing Easy Access to US for Possible Saudi Terrorists

September 11, 2001 is a day that most Americans will never forget. A total of 19 Islamic terrorists commandeered four commercial airlines full of passengers and aimed them at American targets.

I remember that morning I was at work when my boss called me and told me that an airliner had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. We had a television that I turned on the news just in time to see the second airliner crash into the second tower of the World Trade Center. That was the realization that America was under attack.

The federal government tightened up security and travel requirements to and from the United States. At one time we could travel to places like Barbados without having to get a passport if our stay was less than 30 days. Likewise, family in Barbados could travel here to the United States with just their driver’s license as sufficient ID. But all that changed after 9/11.

It didn’t take long for federal investigators to identify most of the terrorists involved. Of the 19 terrorists 15 were from Saudi Arabia. Since that time the United States has taken special steps to screen and vet all Saudi nationals planning to travel to the United States. It was then up to our government whether or not to grant them visas.

Eleven years have passed since the attacks on US soil. Now it seems that some of our government officials have forgotten the lessons from 9/11 or who carried out the attacks. After meeting with Saudi officials in January, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has decided to give trusted traveler status to supposedly low risk airline passengers from Saudi Arabia.

Tanya Taylor Fall 2013

By Justin Fenner

“I like to get things done with,” Tanya Taylor told us during her Fall 2013 presentation at the Museum of Modern Art on Wednesday evening, one of the earliest slots on this season’s schedule. “I like to be ready and then kind of sit back and watch everyone else’s shows.”

Taylor’s show – her third – preserved the ’60s bent that we’ve seen from her in past efforts, this time filtered through the lens of artist Raynaud. “He used a lot of grids. He was an architect and a horticulturalist to begin with,” she said – which explains her use of plaid and floral prints. But there wasn’t anything frilly here: a check coat couldn’t prevent the black leather dress underneath it from looking tough, and the pointy metal cap-toes on some of Taylor’s pumps could have looked a little lethal if they hadn’t been paired with straight-legged orange trousers or little black socks.

Now that her own presentation is over, the designer plans to go to wedding in Barbados to attend to.

“I’m going on my bachelorette party,” she said. “Big bachelorette party with 13 of my girlfriends next Friday, so that’s a good way to unwind.” The wedding itself will be in Barbados, and Taylor has known what she’s going to wear for some time. “The dress is Fall collection that he’s designing for me. I’m very excited.”

Who wouldn’t be? A look at Taylor’s Fall 2013 wares here in the gallery.

The $700 Million Vision to Put Grenada on the Global Luxury Map

By Marc E. Babej, Contributor Products that transform an industry are few and far between – which is why they get so much attention from users and the media. On any given day, you’ll find business news coverage of smartphones, shale gas,  drones or electrical cars. But when was the last time you heard of a single business venture that has the potential to revamp an entire country? Enter the island nation of Grenada. Chances are you haven’t been thinking about Grenada for a while – and when you last did, it was likely in the context of the 1983 US-led invasion. Or maybe you had a fleeting moment of thinking why one hears so little about Grenada compared to other Caribbean islands such as Barbados. If real estate developers Peter de Savary and Robin Paterson have their way, this is about to change. Their vision is to put Grenada on the map – with a development the tune of $700 million.
