NEW YORK, March 18 (UPI) — Screenwriter David Magee says he worked closely with director Ang Lee as he penned their big-screen adaptation of Yann Martel’s Indian fable “Life of Pi,” which ultimately won four Oscars this year.
Christian Bale is now reportedly in talks with 20th Century Fox to star in Ridley Scott’s Moses movie.
The upcoming film, titled Exodus, was originally scripted by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, but the project was recently made a studio priority after Dragon Tattoo scribe Steve Zaillian came on board for a rewrite. (The writer also worked with Scott on American Gangster.) According to Deadline, Fox hopes to get the ball rolling as soon as Scott completes work on his other film The Counselor.
This news comes hot on the heels of Steven Spielberg‘s departure from another Moses project, Gods and Kings, which is set up at Warner Bros. Life of Pi director Ang Lee is next in line for that one, although he’s yet to formally meet with the studio about it.

Rumblings of a new solo Hulk project have been pretty consistent since audiences became smitten with Mark Ruffalo’s take on Marvel’s Jade Giant in last year’s The Avengers. While there are certainly big plans for Hulk and his role in Avengers 2, anything more is really just wishful thinking on the part of fans – at least at this point.
Both Joss Whedon and Ruffalo have denied any current plans for a new Hulk solo project or the rumored Planet Hulk storyline for Avengers 2.
Let’s face facts: Hulk doesn’t have the best track record on the big screen. I’m not talking about box office returns, but rather reception. We’re all familiar with the vitriol that’s associated with Ang Lee’s Hulk, but even the reaction to the more action-minded Incredible Hulk was lukewarm. While I admit I’m far more attracted to Ang Lee’s version (final 20 minutes aside), I don’t think even a diehard Incredible Hulk enthusiast would deny that Hulk is clearly the outcast in terms of the movie Avengers.

Another Oscar ceremony has come and gone. Expectations were met (Daniel Day-Lewis winning Best Actor) and there were some surprises (Ang Lee beating Steven Speilberg for Best Director). Following along on Twitter, there were plenty of complaints about the host, the length of the ceremony and some of the presenters. LOS ANGELES — Just as Oscar host Seth MacFarlane set his sights on a variety of targets with a mixture of hits and misses, the motion picture academy spread the gold around to a varied slate of films. “Argo” won best picture as expected, along with two other prizes. But “Life of Pi” won the most awards with four, including a surprise win for director Ang Lee.
“Les Miserables” also won three Academy Awards, while “Django Unchained” and “Skyfall” each took two.

NEW YORK, Feb. 24 (UPI) — Taiwanese-born filmmaker Ang Lee admits he faced some major hurdles in adapting Yann Martel‘s 2001 fantasy-adventure novel, “Life of Pi.”
The Weinstein Company has set a May production start for a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The film will be based on Silver Vase, Iron Knight, the fifth book in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy by Wang Du Lu.
According to Deadline, the project will shoot in Asia from a script by John Fusco (The Forbidden Kingdom, Hidalgo), with Harvey Weinstein producing and veteran Chinese director Ronny Yu in talks to direct. Ang Lee, who directed the first film, is currently not involved with the followup.
“This was an opportunity to explore a lifelong passion I’ve had for Wu Sia, and if there wasn’t continuing source material, I would never have gotten involved,” Fusco told the site.

The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards have been announced and Lincoln leads the way, picking up a whopping 12 nominations, including nods for Steven Spielberg’s direction and Daniel Day-Lewis’s grandstanding performance as honest Abe.
Life of Pi wasn’t far behind, Ang Lee’s magical adaptation of Yann Martel’s bestselling book managing 11 nominations.
Both films make the Best Picture category, alongside Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Amour, Django Unchained and Argo.
But there was no place for the hotly tipped Skyfall in any of the major categories. Instead it picked up nominations for cinematography, music, sound mixing, sound editing and song, for Adele’s monster hit. And Bond shouldn’t be too blue, as the Academy is also paying tribute to the character on this, his 50th screen birthday.

Angelina Jolie’s planned big-screen version of the book Cleopatra: A Life has spit out a bunch of would-be directors, including James Cameron, Paul Greengrass and David Fincher. But now Life of Pi director Ang Lee says it’s his turn to take a shot at the age-old story.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Lee about Cleopatra, and he said he’s gearing up to the read the script and that it “just feels right to me after all the other types of films I’ve done. What does it have in common with any of them? They’re all totally different! That’s what makes this perfect.”
Uh, why not?
