Was Vittorio Missoni Kidnapped?

By Justin Fenner

A text message received by the son of Guido Foresti, one of the men on board Vittorio Missoni‘s missing plane, has led investigators to believe that their disappearance may actually have been a hijacking. On Sunday evening, Foresti’s son received a message saying, “Call now, we are reachable,” but no one has been able to reach Foresti’s phone. Investigators are now looking for signs that the four were taken hostage.

This has renewed the Missoni family’s hope that Vittorio and his traveling companions are indeed alive. “It’s better to be kidnapped than at the bottom of the sea,” said Vittorio’s sister Angela on Monday. “We hope all four are alive and well. We also hope that the searches go in all directions.”

Vittorio had been vacationing with his wife Maurizia Castiglioni and two other couples in the Venezuelan islands of Los Roques. Vittorio, Castiglioni, Foresti and Foresti’s wife Elda Scalvenzi were on board the plane with two Venezuelan crew members. The other two people on vacation, Scalvenzi’s brother Giuseppe and his wife Rosa Apostoli, were believed by some to have been kidnapped, but the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reported that they made it to Milan safely on Sunday.

Vittorio Missoni Missing After Plane Disappears in Venezuela

By Justin Fenner

Authorities in Venezuela are on a search-and-rescue mission after a plane carrying Vittorio Missoni disappeared on Friday.

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reports that Missoni, his wife Maurizia Castiglioni, another couple and two Venezuelan crew members were leaving the island resort of Los Roques when their plane went missing. Emergency services weren’t able to find the plane yesterday and halted the search overnight.

Giovanni Davoli, the Italian consul in Venezuela, told Reuters the search effort resumed Saturday morning. “They have been looking for it with helicopters and ships, but have not found anything yet,” he said.

A Missoni spokeswoman said the family “has been informed by the Venezuelan consulate that Vittorio Missoni and his wife are missing, but we don’t know any more.”

The New Girl: Glamour Names Ying Chu Beauty Director

By Justin Fenner

The great editor shakeup of 2012 is continuing right on into the New Year with a recent round of staff changes at Glamour. The magazine has replaced its longtime beauty director Felicia Milewicz, who left in November, with Marie Claire‘s former beauty and health director Ying Chu.

Chu will serve as the magazine’s executive beauty director, overseeing beauty content both in print and online. She’ll work closely with editor in chief Cindi Leive. Chu will be replaced by Erin Flaherty, Marie Claire‘s current executive beauty editor.

“There is not a more exciting place to be, or a more inspirational editor to work with,” said Chu, who starts her new job at the end of the month. “And I can’t wait to engage with the Glamour audience!”

The new hire coincides with a round of promotions: Glamour‘s executive fashion director Anne Christensen is now creative director, fashion; and design director Geraldine Hessler‘s new title is creative director, design. Suzanne Donaldson, previously the magazine’s photo director, is now its executive photo director.

The Glamour team is just one of many glossy magazine staffs that have been rocked by editors coming and going in the last several months. Last October, Glamour‘s senior beauty editor Elaine Welteroth left the magazine to replace Teen Vogue‘s outgoing beauty and health director Eva Chen.

Mugler Spring 2013 Handbag Collection

By Justin Fenner

Come February, Nicola Formichetti‘s first handbag offering for Mugler will finally make its way to stores.

“This is now my fourth collection as creative director of Mugler,” Formichetti said. “I was interested in creating sculptured objects in 3D, a piece of the Mugler world that one can carry around.”

The rigidly structured bags are aligned with the edgy futurism of Formichetti’s Spring 2013 collection for the brand, combining metallic calfskin with snakeskin, embossed leather, and crocodile. Two of the bags even feature a 3D tortoiseshell print. Prices range from $1,050 for a leather clutch to $18,000 for a bag made from patent crocodile.

Stateside, the bags will be available at Barneys, Maxfield, Opening Ceremony, Patron of the New, and Joan Shepp stores next month. Shopbop, Moda Operandi, and Luisa via Roma will sell the bags on their websites.

A look at the collection here in the gallery.

Naomi Campbell Says She's "Fine" After Reportedly Being Mugged in Paris

By Justin Fenner

The torn ligament that has kept Naomi Campbell in a wheelchair and on crutches is reportedly the result of being mugged.

While the supermodel has kept the cause of her injury quiet, a source told Page Six that a band of thugs “knocked over and robbed” Campbell while she was trying to hail a cab in Paris over a month ago.

“It was terrifying. Naomi believes the assailant had been watching her, casing her out, and waited for a moment to strike when she was alone,” the source said. “Her leg was injured as she was violently pushed to the ground. She was understandably very upset and shaken up.”

The jewelry Campbell was wearing at the time of the attack may be why she was targeted. She’s said to have reported the theft to French police, and was advised not to talk about the event while it’s under investigation. The most she’s said about the incident is, “I am sorry, I do not talk to press, but I am fine.”

Campbell is reportedly recovering in Miami after being treated by an orthopedic surgeon in Colorado. Her active tweeting of inspirational quotes and affirmations suggests she just wants to put the whole thing in the past.

Thakoon Pre-Fall 2013

By Justin Fenner

The phrase “modern elegance” often calls to mind tired interior design tropes, but that’s not the case with Thakoon Panichgul’s Pre-Fall 2013 collection.

In this offering, the designer tried to reinterpret what elegance means right now and found that “for elegance to make sense in a modern, working context, it has to be speedier.” That means casting aside opera gloves and costume jewels in favor of clothing women could run around in.

It explains the easy-to-wear A-line dresses, made out of everything from gray wool to pink leather. Some of the coats were generously tailored, too, and one featured a cotton-field print that’s used in a variety of garments. There’s also plenty of texture: Mongolian fur vests and navy-blue leather pieces gave the collection a luxurious edge.

Young Valentino Just Wanted to "Wear Leather Pants and Dance"

By Justin Fenner

Before he met his partner Giancarlo Giammetti, Valentino says he was a freewheeling 26-year-old who just wanted to have a good time.

The Daily Telegraph asked the designer to describe a photo of himself working in 1958, when he’d just come back to Rome to set up his first atelier on the Via Condotti. He’d just spent several years in Paris, going to clubs with Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent after class at the Ecole de la Chambre de la Mode. Before heading back to Italy, he worked for designers Jean Desses and Guy Laroche.

“At this time, I just wanted to have fun, drive a sports car, sunbathe at the beach, wear leather pants, and dance,” he said. “But not long after this photograph was taken, I went to have drinks with friends and met Giancarlo Giammetti. It was Giancarlo who started to grow the business [he dropped out of studying architecture to look after the financial side of Valentino’s fashion house from 1960]. We moved to Via Gregoriana, where we had 100 people in the atelier. Giancarlo decided that I should show my collections in Florence as it was a very important market. It all took off for me when the buyers of the American department stores Bloomingdale’s, Saks, Macy’s, and Neiman Marcus discovered me there.”

Erin Fetherston Pre-Fall 2013

By Justin Fenner

For Erin Fetherston, Pre-Fall dressing means making the most of the balmy days at the end of Summer. In her latest offering, a recent trip to Los Roques – a group of islands off the coast of Venezuela – informed the tropical color palette and the use of pattern. For example, one multicolored print depicting a stylized ecosystem of people, trees, homes, and butterflies got cut into a sleeveless shirt and a dress.

Of course, shoppers can always expect fun dresses from Fetherston, and this offering doesn’t disappoint on that front. A sparkly, strapless pink-and-gold pleated number was eye-catching and fun, but some of the other evening pieces (one combined a black bodice with a gold-spangled skirt covered by a layer of organza) were a little more grown-up. The few separates, like a pair of slim trousers and a sleeveless black peplum top, preserved that sense of polish.

    By Robert Khederian

All the bits fit to print here, in our daily news roundup.

  • Dita Von Teese has some wise words to avoid style ridicule: “You can be a juicy, ripe peach, and there’s still going to be someone who doesn’t like peaches, so you can either submit to someone’s criticism of you, or you can get on with the business of being your own amazing self who attracts other like-minded people that appreciate you.” [XOJane]
  • Olivier Rousteing’s fail-safe hangover remedy begins at McDonald’s: “I buy nine nuggets, barbeque sauce, a burger, McFlurry, and potatoes. I swear when you get out of the club at 6 or 7, and you wait a bit till McDonald’s opens, that’s the best cure.” [Fashionista]

  • A Guide to Every Dramatic Moment in the "Battle of the Burches"

    By Justin Fenner

After four months of legal volleys – including a countersuit, subpoenas on Christmas Eve, and allegations of corporate misconduct – Tory Burch and her ex-husband and business partner Chris Burch have finally settled their lawsuits against each other.

The drama around this case started over a year ago when Chris opened C. Wonder, which many saw as a threat to Tory’s brand. From its outset, the lower-priced line of clothing and accessories was accused of looking too similar to Tory’s aesthetic. The resolution to this case doesn’t address those similarities and instead focuses on the sale of Chris’s stake in the company, much of which went to two new investors. This lessens his power and involvement at the brand, which will hopefully give both Burches some peace.

So how did they get to this point? A look back at every step of the aptly named Battle of the Burches, here in the gallery.

All Atwitter Over Nothing? The Truth Behind the Lily Cole-Jack Dorsey Rumor

    By Justin Fenner

Lily Cole and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey are the subjects of the year’s first model relationship rumor, but every rumor should be taken with a grain of salt.

On New Year’s Eve, Cole and Dorsey were photographed together on a yacht off the coast of St. Barts. Shots of Cole seemingly massaging Dorsey’s shoulders led some news outlets to report that the two are an item, but Dorsey tweeted a reminder Wednesday that things aren’t always what they appear.

Cole’s account has been silent on the matter. Two days after this photo was taken, more pictures from the trip revealed that movie producer Brian Grazer and a music executive were also on the trip. Is this simply a group of famous friends on vacation? A look at a few photos from the trip here in the gallery.

    Giulietta Pre-Fall 2013

    By Justin Fenner

Is that Holly Golightly we see? For Giulietta’s Pre-Fall 2013 collection, Sofia Sizzi looked to Audrey Hepburn‘s wardrobe in Breakfast at Tiffany’s for inspiration. Sizzi was already a fan of simple ’60s silhouettes, but she freshened them up with gradient jewel prints and light-handed embellishments. A bright pink short-sleeved dress with a full crinoline skirt made for some serious fun, and so did her homage to Golightly’s cat, who got immortalized in a green-and-black print.

    Calvin Klein Collection Pre-Fall 2013

    By Justin Fenner

“The future is about new construction,” said Francisco Costa after the Pre-Fall 2013 presentation for Calvin Klein. “You have to show something new.”

What’s new at this brand is a focus on generous proportions. Costa put rounded shoulders on generous coats belted at the waist like robes, and let slim skirts and dresses fall below the knee. Some of the looks were paired with turtlenecks or dickies (and a few were made from shaved mink), which gave the show a monastic feeling.

Not that there wasn’t a little kink, too. One of those coats was cut from a shiny light-brown vinyl, and there were a few pieces – like a sleeveless shirt with a peplum and an overcoat – made from black leather.
