She Did It For Vogue: Karlie Kloss Explains Her Short New Haircut

When Karlie Kloss turned up backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show last month with a much shorter haircut, she told us that she did it for “a job.”

This week, Vogue published a story about a newly trendy haircut known simply as the chop, which in recent months has been adopted by everyone from Arizona Muse to Olivier Theyskens. Kloss’s cut was administered by the mononymous New York stylist Garren in Patrick Demarchelier‘s photo studio, and the magazine chronicled the model’s transformation from long-haired and lovely to short-haired and almost gamine.

“I love it. I can’t stop touching it . . . it makes me feel more daring,” Kloss said afterward, adding that having shorter locks “actually takes the focus off your hair and puts the focus on you. I’m starting to realize that it’s all about confidence.”

The only drawback to the new ‘do? “It’s winter, and I happen to have this very long neck,” Kloss noted. “I may need to invest in some really warm scarves.”

So Far, January's Covers Do Not Disappoint

This was a big year for Jessica Chastain, but judging by the January covers that are starting to trickle in, 2013 might be even better.

The flame-haired actress and face of Yves Saint Laurent’s Manifesto graces a lion’s share of glossies this month. While all are striking, the very best of them are the four from W created by four separate artists. Each is fantastic in its own right, and each lets Chastain’s chameleon appeal shine.

But even if Chastain steals the show with W, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few supermodels vying to give the actress a run for her money. Kate Upton on Vogue UK looks as lush as can be, while Carolyn Murphy on Vogue Australia is a sunny blast of fresh air that feels particularly welcome in this hemisphere.

Psychedelic Hedonism: The Trippiest Fashion Videos of the Year

Fashion films often take the form of fawning moving portraits in which beautiful models languish on balmy beaches or in well-appointed mansions, but this year’s best stand out for being much more than that. Below, a countdown of the the trippiest, most thought-provoking videos we saw in 2012.

5. Prada’s Real Fantasies Spring 2012

It should have been clear early on that there was something in the water when this video, which juxtaposes new images against visuals from the ’50s and ’60s – the decades that inspired Prada’s Spring 2012 collection – debuted in April.

4. Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2012 Campaign Video

There are only two subjects in this video: an orchid and Candice Swanepoel. A quick pace is set by unrelenting jump cuts between the flower and Swanepoel’s lovely face. The soundtrack of a drum mimicking the human heartbeat makes the video even more haunting.

3. Alexander McQueen’s Fall 2012 Campaign Video

If David Sims’ almost luridly neon Fall 2012 campaign for Alexander McQueen wasn’t colorful enough, his video certainly is. It primarily features a loop of model Suvi Koponen taking the oversized visors from the collection off of her face, accented by dancing geometric neon shapes and clouds of pixelated pigment that explode all over the screen.

2. Prada’s Real Fantasies Fall 2012

Attempts to explain what’s happening in this video are probably best left to the people who created it. From the official description: “Set within a dystopian society of machines and jagged geometries, genetically perfected clones roam digital colonies. Each scene depicts an antiquated landscape within a galaxy of characters engrossed in oblique and possibly deviant power dynamics.”

1. Proenza Schouler’s Desert Tide

Jack McCollough’s sister Kate worked as the creative director for this film, which was created with the video game Second Life. Everything in it – from the models who levitate while doing a peculiar dance, to the purple dolphin that swims through sand – is CGI.

Emily Current and Merritt Elliott to Leave Current/Elliott

Designers Emily Current and Merritt Elliott have announced they’re leaving Current/Elliott, the premium denim label they founded in 2008.

“We are so proud of what we have accomplished with Current/Elliott,” the two said in a statement, declining to offer an explanation for their departure. “Parting ways has been a difficult decision, but we are thrilled for our next chapter in design and to perpetuate our whimsical Americana aesthetic across multiple categories.”

The two will still work together as stylists and consultants, and have a few future design projects lined up.

If three instances of the same occurrence makes a trend, 2012 was a trendy year for designers to leave the brands they founded. Simon Spurr left his eponymous menswear line without explanation in March, and Doo-Ri Chung left her award-winning label Doo.Ri in June.

Diesel Boss Renzo Rosso Acquires Stake in Marni

After months of speculation that Diesel founder Renzo Rosso would buy a stake in Marni, Rosso confirmed on Thursday that the brand is now in his portfolio.

The exact figures of the deal were not disclosed, but Reuters reports that Rosso made the acquisition through his holding company, Only the Brave, which in addition to Diesel also controls Maison Martin Margiela and Viktor & Rolf. Rosso’s investment will not only help open more Marni boutiques around the world, but also push the brand into markets like China.

That’s the kind of support Marni founder and CEO Gianni Castiglioni told WWD he was looking for in October.

“We would like to double our sales in five years through a further development of retail but without drastically overturning our company,” he said. “I would be open to consider a partner only if he would share my vision in managing the company. We are looking at industrial partners that can provide competence and long-term vision.”

Industrially speaking, Rosso is a good fit. Through its subsidiaries, Only the Brave manufactures clothing for Vivienne Westwood, Dsquared2, and Marc Jacobs‘s menswear line. Rosso is also invested in the ecommerce giant Yoox, and in Marcolin, a company that produces eyewear for Tom Ford, Roberto Cavalli, and – naturally – Diesel.

Christopher Kane For PPR? Not So Fast

PPR‘s executive team is having discussions about backing a new brand, but it’s not known yet who the lucky designer to join the fashion conglomerate will be.

“We have been talking about investing in a new luxury name,” said PPR CEO Francois-Henri Pinault in an interview with the Financial Times. “We have no more young brands since Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney have all passed the €100 million mark (just over $132 million at current exchange).”

When PPR makes an acquisition, Pinault said, it usually tries to break into an area where it’s underrepresented. For example, the firm recently purchased Qeelin, a Hong Kong jewelry operation. Before that, Boucheron was the only jewelry unit PPR‘s luxury portolio. Pinault also made it clear that PPR “will not buy a promising brand and try to move it into another sector.”

And though there has been speculation that PPR has been in talks with Christopher Kane, the firm’s method of buying new brands would suggest that his label might not be the right fit. Kane’s product is certainly different from other PPR brands. But as far as his business model is concerned, Kane’s brand is a smaller, younger version of what PPR already has in its stable. Christopher Kane, Stella McCartney, and Alexander McQueen all offer high-end women’s clothing – even around the same price point – and all three brands speak to a modern British design sensibility. If PPR did invest in Kane, it would be at odds with how Pinault has described his brand-buying methods.

Still, this hasn’t stopped industry observers from honing in on Kane as a possible contender for PPR‘s investment. He’s been a free agent since he left his position as the creative director of Versace’s Versus line to focus on his own brand last month. Kane was even mentioned as a possible replacement for Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga.

Homes of Their Own: Inside the Proenza Schouler Apartments

The New York City apartment Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough put on the market this Fall sold fast, but don’t worry – Lazaro Hernandez‘s place is still up for grabs.

Both designers listed their homes for sale on the same day in October, and McCollough’s two-bedroom West Village duplex just sold for $1,895,000. But Hernandez recently reduced the asking price for his apartment – which takes up the parlor floor of a townhouse in Chelsea – from $985,000 down to $950,000.

Why both places didn’t sell immediately is a mystery: McCollough’s light-filled, two-floor apartment has a modern, clean-lined sleekness to it that’s warmed up with natural elements like a wall of wood cabinetry in the living room and dark gray stone countertops in the kitchen. There’s even a small terrace just steps away from the study.

Hernandez’s home is furnished and appointed a little more traditionally: there’s a brick fireplace in the living room, which features wooden shutters on its windows. The terrace here is slightly larger than at McCollough’s place, and accommodates a table, chairs, and an outdoor sectional.

Speculation has the couple pooling their resources and moving in together, but until then, here’s a glimpse of both homes here in the gallery.

Words With Friends

Having a tea party the Tuesday before Christmas is a risky move, even for a social magnet like Derek Blasberg. Although he was unsure that people could duck out of the office or dodge holiday packing, he had the party anyway. Blasberg has a new stationery line with Opening Ceremony to celebrate. “I love that Opening Ceremony can have this very uptown letter-writing tea party at the St. Regis, especially after that very downtown collection of those Yoko Ono jockstraps.” The collaboration—a sort of Mad Lib, fill-in-the-blanks letter-writing guide—had its genesis this summer over drinks with O.C.’s Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. “I came with the idea, and they came with the execution,” said Blasberg. “They really know what they’re doing.” Giancarlo Giammetti, Nate Berkus, Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, and Alexa Chung all turned out, and nearly everyone grabbed a piece of stationery, then signed, sealed, and handed off personal letters to be mailed. So why the interest in letter writing and etiquette? “I never really thought I would become fashion’s ‘Emile’ Post,” Blasberg told Style.com. “Back when my mom made me write thank-you notes before I opened any of my Christmas presents, I should have known it would come back to haunt-slash-inspire me as an adult.”

Christmas Memories: Anna Sui Shares the Worst Gift She Ever Got

Before she was a major name in American fashion, Anna Sui was a little girl whose mother dressed her “like a doll.” Which means getting a military vehicle as a Christmas present probably wasn’t on brand.

“As a little kid, we used to go to my father’s fraternity, and they’d have a Christmas party,” Sui told us at a party for her collaboration with Coach last month. “One year I got a truck – an Army truck – and I just thought, ‘boy that’s really a gyp!’ Then many years later I found out that this uncle spent his own money and bought everybody’s kid a present. So I think it was just a mix up, you know, an oversight, whatever. But I was really disappointed back then on that day.”

Sui added that she’ll be spending the holidays with her family in Bloomfield Hills, MI. “I love the holidays because I have nine nieces and nephews, so it’s very Christmas-y to buy presents and toys,” she said. “I’m hoping that I can give my nieces some of these bags, but I don’t know what I wish to receive.” Hopefully it won’t be another truck.
