Nintendo Registers Digital Rights to Eternal Darkness

Nintendo filed a new trademark for Eternal Darkness, according to Siliconera. The trademark, filed on July 23rd, includes a section that covers downloadable electronic games and programs. While this could signal the future distribution of Gamecube games on Nintendo’s Virtual Console service, the Japanese company has announced no plans to add them to their Virtual Console service.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem was originally developed by Silicon Knights and released in 2002. The third-person horror game earned critical praise for the use of fourth-wall-breaking narrative techniques to confuse players and add depth to the typical scares associated with the genre.

Earthbound's Ten Most Memorable Moments

On April 17 2013, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced via a Nintendo Direct video conference that Earthbound is coming to the Wii U Virtual Console. But when he said “later this year,” we didn’t think he’d mean just three months later. Not only are we excited for other players to get a chance to check out this rare gem, we’re jumping back into a classic that some of us have invested dozens upon dozens of hours into.

But why is the English-language Virtual Console release of Earthbound such a big screaming deal? Is the game really the borderline spiritual journey that its fans claim it to be, or will thousands of  new players do away with their Earthbound chastity only to find the experience doesn’t meet the hype?

Super NVC: Editors Argue About Nintendo's E3 News

Welcome back to another (totally weekly again!) edition of Super NVC, IGN‘s very own Nintendo-centric podcast. This week we’ve got Audrey “The Audrey” Drake (otherwise known as ME!!), Rich “Sleepy Hat” George, Sam “The Man with the Plan” Claiborn, and Jeremy “Fashion Maven” Parish. What a crew! Now let’s get down to business

This week we play a bunch of Virtual Console games… on Wii. I know. I know! But the Wii U update wasn’t live when we recorded this on Thursday, so it was the best we could manage. We do discuss Nintendo’s Wii U Virtual Console strategy, though, as well as argue a bit about the company’s decision to forgo a large-scale, live presentation this year. And by argue, I mean discuss. With shouts.

“Our unlikely yellow hero may be the star of the show, but he won’t get anywhere without the creatures he meets along the way. You can whistle and stomp to influence them, and use their abilities to your advantage. As you play, the storyline unfolds. Your goal is to get to the core of the corruption and save the island!”

I'm Addicted to Buying Super Mario Bros.

Hi kids! My name is Brian Altano, and I have a problem. You see, since 1985 I’ve carried around a familiar little security blanket to wrap myself and the latest Nintendo console all up in to protect me from the night. OK, so maybe it’s not that drastic, but with the recent announcement of the Wii U’s upcoming Virtual Console program, I realized that I’ve been buying the original Super Mario Bros. every few years for my ENTIRE LIFE. In fact, every time Nintendo has released a version of it for me to buy, I’ve bought it. So what the hell is wrong with me? Let’s track my sordid history real quick.

5 Reasons Wii U’s Virtual Console is Totally Fair

Long before the Wii U was officially announced, Wii owners everywhere were already dreading the seemingly inevitable reality of having to re-purchase their Virtual Console content on a new system. And ever since Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct conference, where the Big N laid out its plans for the Wii U’s solution to that service, the web has been in an uproar. It would seem the months/years of pent-up dread has finally come bubbling to the surface, and it’s definitely not pretty.

Thing is – we don’t really have anything to complain about. At all. Read on for five reasons Wii U’s Virtual Console service is perfectly fair, and why it makes no sense to be angry.

Hands-on With Wii U's Virtual Console

Though the full Wii U Virtual Console service won’t be active until later this year (approximately April), Nintendo’s Famicom-inspired “Trial Campaign” is giving us an early look at the feature, which offers some clear advantages over its Wii counterpart. A quick note – you can see all of this for yourself if you purchase Balloon Fight on the Wii U eShop for $0.30 (for the next 30 days) – but in the meantime, here are some early thoughts.

(Don’t mind the tiger. He’s just keeping an eye on things. And, no, that’s not my desk.)

Virtual Console games, once purchased and installed through the Download Manager, are placed directly onto Wii U’s main menu. Booting a game leads directly into that game’s interface, which is replicated on your GamePad and TV screen, in its original aspect ratio – no oddly stretched images here.

Wii U Virtual Console, OS Upgrades Announced

Nintendo has announced that Virtual Console is coming to Wii U this Spring. Due approximately in April, Wii U’s Virtual Console won’t offer all of the Wii’s Virtual Console library to start, but will begin with NES and SNES games.
