Boomerang Systems Featured in Fortune Magazine

FLORHAM PARK, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Boomerang Systems, Inc., (OTCQB: BMER) a leading designer and manufacturer of automated robotic parking and self storage systems, is featured in the April 8, 2013 issue of Fortune Magazine in a story titled “The Robot Garage.”

The article focuses on Boomerang’s innovative RoboticValet™technology, the history of the company and its leadership, as well as the benefits that its systems can offer for customers.

According to Fortune, “The potential market for robot garages is huge. The product should appeal to customers wherever land is at a premium such as airport car rental locations, universities, downtown apartment and retail developments, and even at transit hubs.”

The story also captures key financial benefits for the developer community specifically, noting, “Real estate developers like the system because it frees up extra floors that now can be used for condos or retail space. That potentially adds up to tens of millions in extra revenues for the developer — way more than enough to pay for the system.”

Boomerang’s RoboticValet™ is a revolutionary parking solution powered by robots that drive on concrete slab floors to transport vehicles to and from parking spaces. The technology eliminates the need for building ramps and reduces the number of drive aisles allowing the cars to fit in roughly half the space required by a conventional garage. Because cars are shut off before being parked in the garage, carbon emissions are reduced and less electricity is used for ventilation and lighting.

United Technologies Sells Electric Power Systems Unit

By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

As part of the regulatory conditions imposed during its acquisition of Goodrich, industrial conglomerate United Technologies completed the divestiture of the electric power systems of Goodrich by selling the business to French aerospace manufacturer Safran for $400 million. Earlier this month it sold Goodrich’s pumps and engine controls business, also a stipulation imposed for regulatory approval.

United Technologies bought Goodrich last year for $18.4 billion, which it plans to pay for in part by selling its Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne division to GenCorp for $550 million.

Among the plans UT had for completing the acquisition originally included spinning off Rocketdyne and its Hamilton Sundstrand units. Both of those were seen as having less opportunity for growth after President Obama reformed NASA‘s mission to one that saw far less space flight. Rocketdyne was a major supplier of NASA‘s rockets, while Hamilton Sundstrand supplied space suits.

The divestitures completed this month alleviated concerns the Justice Department had that by acquiring Goodrich, United Technologies would be the only significant supplier of large main-engine generators and aircraft turbine engines.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER AT HOUSTON RELEASES NEWS OF SUCCESSFUL NANOLOGIX TEST

UTHealth researchers say more rapid test for Group B strep successful

NanoLogix Inc. (OTC: NNLX), an innovator in the accelerated detection, identification and antibiotic sensitivity determination of live bacteria, announces that final results of a 14 month study done by researchers at UTHSC-Houston have been published in a recent online edition of “Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology.” The results were also presented at the 33rd annual Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine meeting last month in San Francisco. Researchers tested 356 pregnant patients for Group B Strep using NanoLogix BNF tests during the study, with NanoLogix test results obtained in 6.5 hours as opposed to 48 hours with standard tests.

Jonathan Faro, MD, PhD, the chief researcher on the study and assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, part of UTHealth, stated: “We’re very happy at UT to have the recent clinical study on GBS showing positive results with the 6.5 hour test. Even more exciting, however, is that we are now seeing results as fast as 30 minutes. This more rapid test is based on a modification of the 6.5 hour test, and has the potential to allow for antibiotic susceptibility testing in an amount of time that would have previously been considered simply impossible. The studies with GBS have been applied to other bacteria, and we are very pleased to see similar results with gonorrhea, which has been implicated last year as a multi-drug resistant pathogen. We are in the final stages of formalizing the 30 minute test for GBS, and will continue to work on additional applications for this assay.”

The news from UTHealth Houston can be found here: http://www.uthouston.edu/media/story.htm?id=e3142cc6-bc5b-415d-8f17-8243da5eb58d

NanoLogix exhibited at the ASM BioDefense and Emerging Diseases Research Meeting in Washington DC 25-27 February 2013. There was strong interest in the Company’s technologies at the exhibition. Interested parties included Federal agencies, universities, large and small laboratories, NGO‘s, and corporations, with resulting sales begun this week.

Motorsports: Ken Block rally cars go blue in the face (and everywhere else)

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Well at least we now know why Ken Block “just ain’t care” about smashing up his Ford Fiesta rally car recently. It’s because he’s getting a full brand makeover including a new team name, new paint scheme and even a new headquarters. Formerly known as Monster World Rally Team, Block and his Fiesta will now be competing under the Hoonigan Racing Division name, which is based out of a new 12,000 square foot facility located in Park City, UT.

As you can tell in the image above, Hoonigan Racing will replace the familiar black, white and green paint scheme with a more colorful design featuring plenty of blue, purple and red; the Monster Energy logo retains some of the car’s green. The new paint scheme was inspired by Block’s love of skateboard graphics from the ’80s and early ’90s as well as “Miami Vice-era” speedboats.

Block will continue to compete in multiple rally racing series such as Global RallyCross, World Rally Championship and X Games. The new headquarters features office space on one side and a shop for the cars on the other side. The building features plenty of stuff you’d expect from a company designed around Ken Block, including a massive gaming station for racing video games, recycled shipping containers used throughout the facility and a black bear.

Block also hints at the next Gymkana on the Hoonigan Racing blog:

I can’t comment too much on it at this point, but we’re taking a very different approach to it for this year. That’s all I’m going to say right now!”

So, we guess we’ll be looking forward to that, then.

Texas officer who ended '66 UT sniper rampage dies

The Austin police officer who helped stop Charles Whitman‘s 1966 sniper rampage from atop the University of Texas tower has died.

Houston McCoy fired two blasts from his shotgun to bring down Whitman, who killed 16 people during nearly two hours of terror on the UT campus. Wayne Vincent, president of the Austin Police Association, said McCoy died Thursday in the rural West Texas town of Menard.

McCoy was 72 and had been battling a terminal illness for the past year.

Whitman wounded dozens of others before McCoy and fellow officer Ramiro Martinez made their way to the observation deck. Martinez also fired on Whitman.

Vincent called McCoy a good police officer who “answered the call” unsure whether he would live upon reaching the top of the tower.
