Police yet to disclose motive in SF jewelry store killing

A bloodied gunman suspected of killing two women and seriously wounding a man inside a jewelry store at a popular San Francisco shopping center is in custody, but police have yet to release a motive.

Officers encountered the suspect Friday outside the San Francisco Giftcenter & Jewelrymart in the trendy South of Market area. Initially, the officers were not sure if the man, who had blood on his clothes, was a shooting victim or a suspect, police Chief Greg Suhr said.

The man, whose name was not released, then opened fire at officers while retreating into a restaurant, Suhr said.

“The suspect fired additional multiple rounds at the officers and then, we believe, ran out of ammunition, threw the gun on the ground and surrendered,” Suhr said.

Officers did not return fire because the sidewalks were crowded with shoppers and residents, police said.

Inside the shopping center, officers found two women dead and a man injured with gunshot and stab wounds at the Victoga jewelry shop. One woman was shot and the other suffered “wounds from an edged weapon,” police said.

A gun and a knife were recovered from the scene.

Witnesses say the women were employees and the man is the shop’s owner. Their names have not been released.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

SWAT teams and K-9 units swept the building for any additional suspects.

“We believe from video in an adjacent store that there was one suspect. We believe that it is the suspect we have in custody,” Suhr said.

Police were unsure of the relationship between the suspect and the victims, Suhr said, even though he had previously been seen in the building, according to witnesses. Investigators were also trying to determine if Friday’s shooting was connected to a botched robbery.

The shopping center is just blocks from the Hall of Justice, which is the home of San Francisco Superior Court, a jail and police headquarters. Several tech companies, including online game maker Zynga, are also in the neighborhood.

Witnesses and bystanders ran for cover when the shooting began.

“I had just parked when I heard the bullets go `Pop! Pop! Pop!”‘ said Connie Angland of Los Angeles, who was walking toward a nearby REI to buy a present for father’s 70th birthday. “It was scary.”

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has closed campus and ordered an evacuation after confirming that a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings is registered there.

The school did not say what Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is studying or whether he had lived on campus. Police are still searching for him.

School officials say they closed the campus “out of an abundance of caution.”

Student Brie McCarron tells The Associated Press that police and SWAT teams have descended on campus. She says students who know Tsarnaev say he lives in a dormitory.

She says: “Everyone is freaking out.”

Dartmouth is about 65 miles south of the area where authorities are searching Tsarnaev.

Ga. firefighters say they joked with hostage-taker

Georgia firefighters taken hostage after being lured to a home on what they thought would be a medical call say they joked with the gunman in an attempt to lighten the mood.

Tim Hollingsworth, one of the four firefighters taken hostage nearly a week ago, spoke at a news conference Tuesday for the first time since the hours-long ordeal. He says the gunman, 55-year-old Lauren Brown, became agitated at times. But the firefighters were able to calm him down by joking and changing the subject of conversation.

Hollingsworth says Brown told the group he targeted firefighters because he knew they would be unarmed.

Brown, who was killed when SWAT officers stormed the home northeast of Atlanta, had gone into foreclosure and had financial problems.

Filing Extension On April 15 Can Be More Important Than You Think

By Peter J Reilly, Contributor

Some people are under the impression that if you don’t get your return filed by April 15, a team of IRS commandos will be shortly surrounding your house telling you to come out with your hands up.  Of course the stakes are much lower than that.  By filing Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension), you will stave off the SWAT team until after Columbus Day.  And in reality the consequences of untimely filing, can be quite trivial.  Late file and late pay penalties, like interest, are based on the balance due, so, in reality, being a day late might not cost anything even if you are a dollar short.

Minneapolis SWAT team leader found guilty in bar assault

A Minneapolis police SWAT team leader has been convicted of assaulting a man while off-duty at a bar.

The Anoka County District Court jury decided Saturday that Sgt. David Clifford was not acting in self-defense when he punched Brian Vander Lee on June 16 at Tanners Station in Andover. Clifford said Lee tried to take a swing at him.

The 44-year-old Vander Lee, from Ramsey, hit his head on the concrete patio and needed three brain surgeries.

The 48-year-old Clifford was convicted on first-, third- and fifth-degree assault.

Clifford will be sentenced May 29. Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo says a seven-year sentence is recommended under Minnesota sentencing guidelines.

Closing arguments concluded Friday and the jury deliberated for several hours.

Police: firefighter hostage-taker gave no signs of compromise

When a gunman took four firefighters hostage in his Georgia home, police tried to buy time and create a rapport by meeting his initial demands. But when his demands became unreasonable and negotiations seemed to go nowhere, police said, officers stormed the house and killed him after he fired on them.

Authorities on Thursday provided new details on Wednesday’s hostage-taking north of Atlanta, including how the suspect — 55-year-old Lauren Brown — lured firefighters to his home.

Meanwhile, some who knew Brown said he’d suffered from disabling medical problems and was struggling financially, and that he had lived across the street from his ex-wife and her new family.

Gwinnett County Police Chief Charles Walters said Brown called 911 complaining of chest pains Wednesday afternoon, and five Gwinnett County firefighters arrived at 3:48 p.m., believing it was a routine call. Brown was lying in bed and appeared to be suffering from a condition that left him unable to move. But when they approached the bed to help him, he pulled out a handgun, Walters said.

Brown told his hostages he had spent weeks planning the ambush and targeted firefighters rather than police officers so he wouldn’t be shot, Walters said. Investigators found half a dozen guns in his house.

One of Brown’s first demands was to move the fire truck and ambulance from in front of his house, and he released one firefighter to accomplish that, police said.

Next he asked that power be restored to his house, which was in foreclosure; that his cellphone be reactivated; and that his cable and Internet service be turned back on. Police checked and learned that those services had all been deactivated due to non-payment. They worked with the utilities and companies to get them turned back on.

Then Brown asked for a meal to be brought in from a fast-food seafood restaurant for him and his hostages. But he had also asked police to bring tools and wood and to board up the windows and doors of his house from the outside.

“That was the one we couldn’t realistically meet,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith said, adding that they didn’t want to fortify Brown inside with the hostages.

Instead, a SWAT officer carrying the food approached the house in Suwanee, about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Other SWAT members set off a stun blast to distract Brown and stormed the house. Police said Brown opened fire on the first officer as he entered the bedroom. The man was hit in the left arm by one of the shots, but managed to return fire, killing Brown. Before Brown fired, police told him to drop his weapon, Walters said.

Thursday, it wasn’t immediately clear why Brown had lashed out. Brown had separated from his wife years earlier, but he had lived across the street from her, her new husband and his two children, according to neighbors and people who knew the family.

“We knew he wasn’t quite normal, but this is a real shock,” said David Books, a former colleague of Brown’s and a friend until they

Firefighters taken hostage 'relieved' ordeal over

Five suburban Atlanta firefighters who were held hostage after responding to a report of a medical emergency are in good condition following a police raid that left the suspected gunman dead.

Authorities say an unidentified man took the five firefighters hostage in a Gwinnett County home Wednesday, demanding that his cable and power be turned back on at the house, which is in foreclosure.

While the suspect let one firefighter leave, police said he held the others for hours before being shot dead during an exchange of gunfire when SWAT members stormed the house. A fire official said the hostages had cuts and bruises from explosions officers set off before moving in but were OK.

Gunman holding firefighters killed; 4 hostages OK

An armed man who was having financial problems held four firefighters for hours in a suburban Atlanta home, demanding his cable and power be turned back on, before being shot dead when SWAT members stormed the house, authorities said Wednesday. The hostages had cuts and bruises from explosions that officers set off to distract the gunman before moving in, but they will be fine, a fire official said.

Minutes before the police announcement on the resolution, a huge blast could be heard a quarter-mile away from the home, shuddering through the Suwanee neighborhood, setting off car alarms.

Earlier Wednesday, five firefighters responded to what seemed like a routine medical call and were eventually taken hostage by an unidentified suspect inside the house, police said. The gunman released one of the firefighters to move a fire truck but held the other four.

Dozens of police and rescue vehicles surrounded the home and a negotiator was keeping in touch with the gunman, police said. The situation remained tense until the blast rocked the neighborhood of mostly two-story homes and well-kept lawns. Residents unable to get into their neighborhood because of the police cordon flinched and recoiled as the enormous blast went off.

Soon after the stun blast, officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect and a SWAT member was shot in the hand or arm, but should be fine, said Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter. Ritter would not saw how the gunman was fatally shot, saying it was being investigated.

“The explosion you heard was used to distract the suspect, to get into the house and take care of business,” Ritter said in a news conference minutes after the resolution. He said the situation had gotten to the point where authorities believed the lives of the hostages were in “immediate danger.”

The gunman, who has not been identified, demanded several utilities be restored, Ritter said. According to public records, the home is in foreclosure and has been bank-owned since mid-November.

“It’s an unfortunate circumstance we did not want to end this way,” Ritter said. “But with the decisions this guy was making, this was his demise.”

Firefighters were able to use their radios to let the dispatch center know what was going on, said Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said, and Ritter said officials decided to “get control of the situation” and do it swiftly.

Jerry Hardesty, Canton Police Officer, Charged With Stealing Department Rifle

By The Huffington Post News Editors

(CANTON, Mich.) — A Canton police officer accused of stealing a department rifle was arraigned on three federal charges on Tuesday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Lt. Jerry Hardesty, 55, faces charges of larceny of a firearm, receiving and concealing stolen property and felony firearm. Hardesty, a 24-year veteran on the force, has been placed on administrative leave and faces up to 17 years in prison should he be found guilty of all three charges.

Canton police noticed that they were missing a gun from their inventory in February, and an investigation involving the help of Michigan State Police found that Hardesty had taken the rife. Officials have not said what type of rifle it was, other than that it was for SWAT team use.

Late Friday afternoon, deputies responded to a report of a man shooting a gun at a house. They said the suspect shot two neighbors in what was described as a neighborhood feud. Neighbors told the newspaper that the two victims were adult males.
