SAS Institute, National Instruments top list of companies with good work-life balance

Sixteen of the top 25 companies offering a good work-life balance are technology companies, according to a new ranking from the job site Glassdoor, with the SAS Institute and National Instruments leading the pack.

The SAS Institute, which makes business analytics software for industries ranging from casinos to oil and gas providers, occupied the number-one spot on Glassdoor’s third annual ranking of the top companies for work-life balance, up from number four last year. National Instruments, which makes automated test equipment and virtual instrumentation software, was ranked second.

Other enterprise IT companies such as Slalom Consulting, Mentor Graphics, FactSet and Agilent Technologies also ranked high on the list. Other companies offering consumer services and products, like Yahoo, AOL, Nokia and MasterCard, were also named.

It is not surprising that SAS topped the list. The Cary, North Carolina-based company provides a dedicated work-life department staffed by eight full-time social workers who provide services to employees, for free, that include support services for child development, aging and elder care, and advising for the college search process.

Agilent Technologies Outfits UC Berkeley Electronics Lab with $300,000 of Test Equipment

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYS: A) today announced that it donated bench-top electronic measurement equipment worth $300,000 to the Texas Instruments Electronics Design Laboratory, which opened at the University of California, Berkeley, yesterday. The new lab will provide more than 1,000 Berkeley students each year with hands-on experience applying the principles they learn in gateway electrical engineering courses such as microelectronic circuit design.

The new lab and adjoining student lounge in Cory Hall – the home of the Electrical Engineering Division of UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences – is fully equipped and delivers a real-world learning environment.

High-Speed Testing along Entire Value Chain of Data Centers and Cloud Computing

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYS: A) today announced it will demonstrate test and measurement solutions for high-speed communication at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) and National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC), March 19-21, at the Anaheim Convention Center (Booth 2719) in Anaheim, Calif.

The new era of data-center infrastructure, enabling cloud computing, big data storage and analytics, is driving the development of new standards for higher data rates. This involves long-haul transmission lines through serial I/O interfaces in end-user devices. 100G and higher is the next speed class required in data centers and metro or long-haul communication lines.

Moving more data at rates of 100 Gb/s and higher across the cloud promises efficiency gains for operators in cost per bit transmitted. They will use technologies such as complex modulation, silicon photonics and integrated optics to achieve those data rates as they build out their networks. But these technologies also create challenges for designers who need to validate their high-speed optical and electrical components and systems.

HP's Rally By The Numbers: Biggest 1-Day Move Since '08

With today’s robust rally, Hewlett-Packard shareholders are enjoying a rare day indeed. With an hour left to go in the trading day, the stock is up 14%. The move has lifted HP‘s market cap by $4.7 billion. By my calculation (using historic data from Yahoo Finance), HP shares have had moves of 14% or more just five other times over the last 50 years. Yes, 50 years. (The company actually went public in November 1957, but the data set I’m using doesn’t quite go back that far.) I count just 26 days in the company’s long history with moves of 10% or more, just five since 2002, and none (before today) since 2008. The most recent comparable move was a 14.5% rally on November 18, 2008, a day in which the company pre-announced strong earnings for the October 2008 quarter. The single biggest one-day move in HP‘s shares was November 6, 2001, when the stock rallied 17.3%. And here’s a delicious irony: That was the day that heirs of Bill Hewlett vowed to vote against the then-pending acquisition of Compaq; the Street was hoping the deal would not be completed. (But, of course, it was.) On November 18, 1999, the stock rose 16.3%; that was the day HP spun-off Agilent Technologies as a separate company. On May 17, 2001, HP shares rose 15.6%, following a strong earnings report for the April 2001 quarter. And on February 19, 1992, the stock rose 14.2%, which I presume followed a strong January quarter earnings report. (I’d note that the next big rally on the list was exactly one year earlier, a 13.7% move on February 19, 1991.) HP‘s rally accounts for more than 18 points of today’s rally on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Even after today’s rally, HP shares are down 16% since Meg Whitman was named CEO.
