The Secret Library of the Famicom

Nintendo’s original 8-bit home console, the Famicom, turned 30 years old last week. It’s a milestone that gamers outside of Japan have recognized, but, for us, it’s mostly just serving as a reminder that we’re now only two years away from the NES hitting that same anniversary mark. (The NES being, of course, what the Famicom became when it left its home country.)

But as this week’s celebration is really for Japan’s Nintendo fans, why not take the chance to look back on some of the games and experiences they’re so nostalgically recalling? NES fans think back on the 8-bit era and remember Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Mega Man and more – all titles that were available on Famicom as well. But the Famicom’s library went even deeper than that, containing a wealth of titles that, for one reason or another, never got the localization treatment.

Trio of Level-5 Games Hitting Nintendo eShop

Three Level-5 eShop games are making their way to the Nintendo eShop.

The first, Starship Damprey, looks really interesting. It’s an experimental first-person horror game that looks like it’s set on an abandoned spaceship. There are no tutorials or objectives at all; players must find what little info they can by exploring in order to “discover the truth of their circumstances”.

Bugs vs Tanks is the second, from the mind of Mega Man creator and Japanese games industry renegade Keiji Inafune. It features a squadron of World War 2 tanks shrunk down to the size of bugs, like a violent Pikmin.

Attack of the Friday Monsters: A Tokyo Tale stars a young boy fighting monsters from Japanese 1970s tokusatsu monster and superhero shows, which come alive on Fridays. You can check out footage of all three below.

Canceled Mega Man FPS ‘Maverick Hunter’ Unearthed

A canceled Mega Man X first-person shooter codenamed Maverick Hunter has been unearthed. In a report published by Polygon, Maverick Hunter is revealed to have been in development in 2010 by Armature, a studio founded by the creators of Metroid Prime.

According to Polygon, “the game would have stayed true to core Mega Man X gameplay concepts, re-imagining his X-Buster arm cannon, his dash and his ability to appropriate the special powers of his fallen enemies. Platforming elements, including X’s wall jump, and classic Mega Man X characters would have been re-imagined in new ways.” Like most Mega Man games, Maverick Hunter’s enemies would have been weak to certain weapons and levels would contain branching paths.

Why Did Xbox 360 Fail in Japan?

The Xbox 360 has been a failure in Japan, which is strange when you consider how much it dominates the North American market, as well as parts of Europe. The console is unlikely to cross the two million sold mark in Japan (which is how much the original Xbox sold there), and has been soundly outsold by its competitors in the form of Nintendo’s Wii and Sony’s PlayStation 3. It continues to see terrible sales, and many stores in Japan carry neither the console or games for the console today in 2013.

In a conversation with IGN, famous Japanese game creator Keiji Inafune – the mind behind Mega Man, Onimusha and the upcoming Vita game Soul Sacrifice – commented on why he thinks Xbox 360 failed to catch on in Japan.

CapCom Is Remastering The Classic NES DuckTales Game

By Alex Knapp, Forbes Staff

For video gamers of a certain age, DuckTales does more than conjure up a reminder of one of our favorite cartoons. It also conjures up one of the best video games of all time. Which is incredible, because anyone who was playing games in the late 1980s and early 1990s knew that a licensed game for the NES was pretty much a guarantee of a lousy game. DuckTales was an exception. Built along similar lines as its Mega Man games, DuckTales was both fun and ridiculously hard. …read more

A New Mega Man Game is in Development

Today at PAX East, Capcom confirmed that a new Mega Man game is in development. Word comes by way of Joystiq, which noted that Capcom had little else to say about the game other than that they’re working on it.

Capcom’s Community Manager, Brett Elston, stated that Capcom is “not ready” to fully reveal the game yet. But just knowing it’s coming is good enough, especially on the heels of the announcement that WayForward and Capcom are bringing back Duck Tales.

Colin Moriarty is an IGN PlayStation editor. You can follow him on Twitter and IGN and learn just how sad the life of a New York Islanders and New York Jets fan can be.

Gunman Clive 3DS Review

Gunman Clive originated as an iOS/Android title, first debuting in the middle of 2012. Created by one man – Bertil Hörberg – in his spare time, it eventually made its way to Nintendo’s 3DS eShop at the beginning of 2013. The side-scrolling platformer, bearing a unique art style, benefited greatly from the physical feedback of real buttons on the 3DS. Luckily, the game was already damn good and gleefully polished before it hit the system.

At its heart, Gunman Clive is a no-nonsense action platformer that is very much inspired by Mega Man. While you don’t slay robot masters and steal their powers, you move and shoot in a similar manner, avoiding a variety of instant death traps. Controlling the titular gunman (or one of two extra characters, one of which is unlocked after beating the game once), you fight other cowboys and a variety of other enemies, including ducks and pelicans.

Watch the 18-Minute Live-Action Sonic Fan Film

Ever wanted to see Sonic in real life? Good news: Blue Core Studios has released a new 18-minute fan film including Sonic, Robotnik and all your favorites in glorious live-action.

The film — originally intended as a spec film — shows off Sonic on planet Mobius and features the return of Jaleel White as Sonic. For those who aren’t aware, White famously voiced Sonic in the Sonic the Hedgehog animated series that aired back in the ‘90s.

Simply called Sonic, Blue Core’s film has been “made solely for entertainment purposes without intentions of profit off the film” and is directed by Eddie Lebron, who previously worked on the Mega Man fan film.

Every Mega Man Boss in Clay Form

Over the past couple of days, I’ve received numerous messages on Twitter and Facebook from IGN readers anxious to show me – a huge old-school Mega Man fan – a rather cool project that a fellow fan recently undertook. As pointed out on Crunchyroll, a man named Ricardo crafted each and every Robot Master from Mega Man 1-10 in cold porcelain. And the end result is astounding.

Street Fighter X Mega Man Review

On December 17, 1987, Rockman – known in the west as Mega Man – was released on the Famicom. Some 25 years later, Mega Man is still a household name (well, in nerdy households, anyway). Capcom’s Blue Bomber is one of the publisher’s most recognizable mascots representing one of its most important franchises, and, until recently, Capcom managed to give gamers lots and lots of Mega Man. Many would argue too much.

These days, in the wake of the Mega Man mastermind Keiji Inafune’s exit from the company, Capcom seems at a complete loss as to what to do with the series. After cancelling two far-advanced projects in the form of Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe, all has been silent as Capcom has focused much of its energy on the sustained revival of Street Fighter, the rebooting of series like Devil May Cry and the refocusing of its survival horror tour de force Resident Evil.
