Mel Gibson’s Brother Wants to be Mad Max

If Avalanche is still in the market for a new voice for Mad Max, there’s a Gibson interested. It’s not Mel, though; it’s his brother, Donal.

Overnight Ausgamers was contacted by Australian director Jamie Blanks (helmer of 1998 slasher Urban Legend) and Donal Gibson, suggesting Gibson as the man to assume the voice role for Mad Max in Avalanche’s upcoming game. They also sent through a brief demo reel to the site, which you can hear here.

Whore of the Orient Team Shut Down

The team working on L.A. Noire creator Brendan McNamara’s Whore of the Orient at Kennedy Miller Mitchell Interactive has reportedly been shut down, according to sources who have contacted MCV Pacific.

KMM absorbed an unspecified number of former Team Bondi staff members after the L.A. Noire studio was liquidated. Subsequently, KMM co-founder and Mad Max-creator George Miller acquired the rights to McNamara’s Whore of the Orient.

In a November 2011 interview with The Australian Financial Review, Miller explained he was ready to go forward with two games; a game version of Mad Max: Fury Road backed by Warner Bros. (that was initially supposed to be made in Sweden) and Whore of the Orient.

The domains madmaxgame.com, madmaxthegame.com, and worldgonemadlegendofmax.com have all been registered by Warner Bros. Entertainment.

The existence of a Mad Max project has been known since March 2008 when it was revealed God of War II director Cory Barlog had partnered with Mad Max writer/director George Miller for a game based on the upcoming Mad Max film, Mad Max: Fury Road.

Mad Max Trilogy Comes to Blu-ray

Mel Gibson‘s dystopian sci-fi series Mad Max will soon be getting the HD box set treatment thanks to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. For the first time ever, the studio will release all three films — Mad Max (1979), Mad Max Road Warrior (1982) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) — on June 4 in one Blu-ray collection.

Here’s the official statement from Warners: “From the very first film, Oscar winner George Miller (Happy Feet, 2006) proved a master at creating the gritty, bleak dystopian world and staging the incredible car stunts and crashes in the era when stuntmen, not computers, achieved the effects. All three movies starred Mel Gibson, virtually unknown until after the second film, as Max Rockatansky, a highway cop traveling through the Outback in a society descending into chaos. The films started Gibson on his road to international superstardom, led to his signature Lethal Weapon series, and later two Academy Awards for his roles as producer and director of Braveheart (1995).”

Motorsports: <em>Autoblog</em> goes to <s>Thunderdome</s> 2013 Griffin King of the Hammers

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Whenever you want, you can play at being Mad Max. The task only requires closing your eyes, powering up the Gas-Free And Violent Post-Apocalyptic Dystopia program in your mental holodeck, then delivering a few lines in your best early Mel Gibson monotone like, “I think we’ve got some hoon trouble.” or “I’m just here for the gasoline.”

It has been called one of the hardest races in the world, numerous times.

Or you can be Mad Max. We’ve been to a lot of places and a lot of races in the world where you can approach the fantasy, but to go all the way – to a place where asking “When is Humungus coming back?” and “Where can I find Master Blaster?” wouldn’t feel strange at all – you need to roll down onto the Means Dry Lake Bed in Johnson Valley, California for King of the Hammers.

What is King of the Hammers? The fact-sheet says it’s a 184-mile race through desert and rocks, but the fact sheet can’t express the experience. King of the Hammers is a one-day race that combines desert racing at triple-digit speeds, rock racing at double-digit speeds and rock crawling at low single-digit speeds. It comes after a week of vicious, timed punishments for every other kind of vehicle that can blast over barrens and crawl through quarries. It is an endurance test that gives competitors 14 hours to finish before time is called – and even then there’s a good chance less than a third of the 120 runners will make it. It has been called one of the hardest races in the world, numerous times. Every year, something like 30,000 people erect a pop-up hamlet called Hammertown for a week to watch it all go down.

More accurately, it is insanity and absurdity that characterizes the best kinds of personal challenges. Even more accurately, it is Thunderdome. And the question that hundreds of off-road racers ask themselves every year, hoping for a chance to just finish – and be stranded in the desert for hours while doing so – is “Thunderdome. How do I get in there?”

Follow us. We’ll show you the way.

Chicago: <i>Defiance</i> Dodge Charger, saving Earth from aliens isn't clean work [w/video]

By Seyth Miersma

Dodge Charger from Defiance TV Show

Filed under:

You’ll be forgiven for not having heard about the TV show Defiance – it actually hasn’t aired its first episode yet. The new science fiction show about an alien war against Earth in the near future seems like a perfect fit for the SyFy channel, and, apparently one that Dodge saw as a slick marketing opportunity for its Charger sedan.

Here in Chicago, Dodge has given a large corner of its show stand to the Defiance Charger, a car that won’t be skipped by any Mad Max fans in attendance at this year’s show. The Charger boasts one hell of a gnarly patina under a confusingly welded cage of tube steel, as well as window bars, a grille guard in front, and big, knobby truck tires. There aren’t any obvious guns or turrets on the outside of the vehicle, so we can only hope that the characters driving it go well-armed.

Look for the Charger to make its star turn in Defiance when the series premieres on SyFy on April 15 at 9:00 PM EST. Also, there’s said to be a Defiance video game in the works, too, so you may get a chance to steer the burly Dodge for yourself. Find a trailer for the show, below, as well.
