Park wins Manulife in playoff

Park Hee-young birdied the third playoff hole to defeat Angela Stanford and capture the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic on Sunday.

Park shot a closing six-under 65 to finish the tournament at 26-under-par 258, capturing her second career LPGA title.

Stanford fired a seven-under 64 on Sunday.

Catriona Matthew (66) finished in third place at 23-under, while Meena Lee took fourth at three strokes further back at the Grey Silo Golf course. Karine Icher had sole possession of fifth at 19-under after a closing 63.

Kang Hae-ji and Choi Na-yeon shot matching nine-under 62s to join Stacy Lewis (64), Suzann Pettersen (66), Gerina Piller (67), Amy Yang (67) and Austin Ernst (67) at 18-under 266.

South Korea’s Park In-bee, who had won the last three tournaments entering this event, carded her second straight 68 to finish in a tie with Jessica Korda (65) for 14th place at 16-under.

Park seizes lead at Manulife Classic

Park Hee-young, who is coming off a missed cut at the US Women’s Open, shot a 10-under 61 to take the lead in the third round of the Manulife Financial Classic.

South Korea’s Park is at 20-under par 193 and has a slim one-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round of the LPGA Tour event at the Grey Silo Golf Course.

Park is just the 11th player in LPGA history to shoot a 61.

“I didn’t realize it,” Park said. “My long putting was pretty awesome. I just tried to trust it.”

American Angela Stanford, who is aiming for her sixth LPGA Tour win, remained in second place with a third-round 64.

Stanford is 19-under-par 194, one shot ahead of Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, who shot 68 and fell into third place at 18-under.

Meena Lee (65) is alone in fourth at 17-under, while Swede Anna Nordqvist (67) rounds out the top five at 15-under.

Gerina Piller, of the US, fired a 62 and vaulted into a tie for sixth at 14-under. She is level with South Korea’s Amy Yang (66) and American Austin Ernst (67).

World number one Park In-bee, the winner of the last three LPGA events, shot 68.

Park, who also won the first three majors of 2013, is tied for ninth place with Norway’s Suzann Pettersen (68) at minus-13.

Park has her work cut out for her if she is to win her fourth straight event.

“I had a lot of opportunities today but missed a lot of putts,” she said.

LPGA commissioner, Mike Whan, stopped by the Forbes offices recently for a chat. The 48 year-old former executive at Procter & Gamble, Wilson Sporting Goods and Taylormade Golf Company became the commissioner of the Tour in January of 2010. He made some waves last year when he told me in an interview that he believes that Augusta National (site of the Masters) should host an LPGA tournament, and that he asks the powers that be about it every year. Duff & Phelps Partners With Cristie Kerr to Mentor LPGA Rookies and Raise Money for Breast Cancer Charity

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Duff & Phelps Corporation (NYS: DUF) , a leading independent financial advisory and investment banking firm, has formed a partnership with LPGA Tour golfer Cristie Kerr to mentor a group of LPGA rookies and raise money for Kerr’s Birdies for Breast Cancer charity. As part of the partnership, Duff & Phelps will extend its ongoing sponsorship of Kerr to include rookie LPGA golfers Kathleen Ekey, Victoria Elizabeth and Taylore Karle. In addition to bringing the four golfers together to establish “Team Duff & Phelps,” the company will make a donation to Birdies for Breast Cancer for every birdie scored by the team during 2013 tournament play.

The mentorship aspect of the program marks the first time that an established LPGA golfer and a corporate sponsor will provide formal guidance on and off the course to junior LPGA colleagues. Ekey, Elizabeth and Karle will benefit from career guidance, professional advice and collaboration on charitable endeavors such as the Birdies for Breast Cancer program throughout the course of the partnership. This announcement follows Duff & Phelps’ recent launch of its internal Network of Women (NOW), which aims to attract, develop and promote women at the firm while also supporting broader causes of interest to women. NOW offers special resources in such areas as recruitment, training, marketing, business development, networking and communications.
