Smulders in ‘Definite Talks’ to Join S.H.I.E.L.D.

Cobie Smulders’ inclusion in last summer’s comic book movie mega-hit, The Avengers, as Agent Maria Hill left many fans wondering what the actress’ role in the larger Marvel cinematic universe might be. When the S.H.I.E.L.D. television series was announced it was natural to guess that she may be a part of that story. As we know, the pilot began shooting this week with Joss Whedon at the helm, and none of the central players in the series, thus far, are adapted from existing Marvel Comics characters. In fact, the only person attached to the project who is also connected to the Marvel movies is Clark Gregg, who is set to revive (yep) his role as Agent Phil Coulson, a character that was originally created specifically for the films.

Obligatory Joss Whedon Star Wars: Ep. VII Post

Avengers director Joss Whedon would’ve liked to helm Star Wars: Episode VII, but…

“I’m as angry as you should be,” says Whedon about not being able to take on a job of that size because of his Avengers 2 commitment. Which isn’t to say that he was ever actually offered the Star Wars gig anyway. But still, CNN says that “With new Star Wars movies on the horizon, Whedon was eager to see if he could be a candidate to direct.” But then he remembered that he’s got S.H.I.E.L.D. and Avengers 2 to worry about.

ABC "Very Hopeful" About S.H.I.E.L.D.

Production is just getting underway on S.H.I.E.L.D., the Marvel TV pilot for ABC co-written and directed by Joss Whedon. And while S.H.I.E.L.D. is only ordered as a pilot and will have to go through the typical process of the network viewing the completed product and deciding whether they want to move forward, it’s obviously seen as a near-certainty that ABC will be ordering this one to series, given Whedon’s involvement and that it’s part of the bigger Marvel movie/Avengers franchise.

At the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today, I asked ABC’s president Paul Lee about S.H.I.E.L.D. and the potential it has to bring a different audience to ABC.

The term “co-viewing” is used for shows watched by parents and kids together, which Lee brought up when talking about the potential S.H.I.E.L.D. has to reach a large and varied audience – especially considering it’s connected to the third highest-grossing movie ever. Said Lee, “I talk about the emotion of the network and that it’s ‘smart with heart.’ There is something which I talk less about which is very, very real at this network and it’s real for Once

What’s Up With Avengers 2?

With his small screen endeavor S.H.I.E.L.D. ramping up for production, filmmaker Joss Whedon is going full steam ahead with all things Marvel for the foreseeable future, including The Avengers 2.
Buried in an Entertainment Weekly interview with the Avengers writer-director is the revelation that EW “met with him just days after he had submitted an outline for the 2015 sequel The Avengers, and as he was in the midst of preparing to shoot the pilot for what could be his next television series: S.H.I.E.L.D.”
No word on what possible new characters may join the team’s roster for Marvel’s The Avengers 2, but you can check out our wish list here.
