No Coulson in Avengers: Age of Ultron?

Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon suggests that Clark Gregg’s beloved character Agent Phil Coulson probably won’t be in the sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In an interview with WPRI at San Diego Comic-Con, Whedon was asked if Coulson will return for Avengers 2: “He could. Right now it’s not something I’m pursuing because I have so much going on in Avengers 2. Finding out that Coulson is alive would be an entire B story. And I already have too much movie. That’s better than the other thing.”

Fear not, though, fanboys. Coulson’s back from the dead (if he even was to begin with) as the star of the upcoming TV series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’: J. August Richards Cast In Joss Whedon’s ‘Avengers’ Spin-Off Series For ABC (REPORT)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Joss Whedon is apparently still loyal to his Whedonverse alums and has reportedly cast “Angel” star J. August Richards in ABC’s “Avengers” spinoff series, “S.H.I.E.L.D.” According to TVLine, Richards has been tapped for a “super top-secret role,” but no further details are available at this time.

Since the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot finished shooting in February, it remains to be seen whether Richards was secretly involved throughout the production, was brought in to film pickups or reshoots after production wrapped, or has already been contracted to appear in future episodes if and when the show inevitably earns a full-season pick-up from ABC (likely around the network’s annual upfront presentation to advertisers in mid-May).

He’ll join Clark Gregg as Marvel movie mainstay Agent Phil Coulson, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, a master in biology and chemistry; Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, a technology and weapons guru; Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, an expert pilot; Chloe Bennet as the “witty and charming” Skye and Brett Dalton as “cool under fire” Agent Grant Ward.

Smulders in ‘Definite Talks’ to Join S.H.I.E.L.D.

Cobie Smulders’ inclusion in last summer’s comic book movie mega-hit, The Avengers, as Agent Maria Hill left many fans wondering what the actress’ role in the larger Marvel cinematic universe might be. When the S.H.I.E.L.D. television series was announced it was natural to guess that she may be a part of that story. As we know, the pilot began shooting this week with Joss Whedon at the helm, and none of the central players in the series, thus far, are adapted from existing Marvel Comics characters. In fact, the only person attached to the project who is also connected to the Marvel movies is Clark Gregg, who is set to revive (yep) his role as Agent Phil Coulson, a character that was originally created specifically for the films.

Coulson Lives! S.H.I.E.L.D. is Not a Prequel

Ever since it was announced that Clark Gregg would be part of the cast of S.H.I.E.L.D., the question all of us who saw The Avengers had was how could that be? How could Agent Phil Coulson, who appeared to die in that film, return? While there are plenty of theories on that, another question was if the series would even have to “resurrect” Coulson at all, with some wondering if maybe it was a prequel, set before the events of Avengers.

I spoke to ABC president Paul Lee last night about S.H.I.E.L.D. and when I asked him how tied into the ongoing Marvel films the series would be, he replied, “There is no question that it is part of the Marvel Universe. In fact, the story takes place after the battle for New York.”
