General Dynamics Helps Win Space Race

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

The ribbon is cut, and the EDGE Space Innovation Center is open.

On Friday, defense and aerospace giant General Dynamics held the grand opening of its new EDGE center 2 miles from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., wherein NASA and other government workers will interact with more than 350 EDGE Innovation Network members from industry and academia.

For more than 40 years, GD has been a NASA partner. At the EDGE center, the company hopes to facilitate “the free-flow of ideas and solutions for next-generation spacecraft, scientific instruments, in-flight operations, and the critical ground systems that keep missions on course.” In so doing, EDGE will help to promote private commercial solutions to space flight in an era of government budget cuts and pull back from government-centric efforts such as the now-defunct Space Shuttle.

GD shares responded positively to the development, and the potential for GD to take a more active role in, and perhaps a greater share of revenues from, private space exploration efforts. Shares of the company gained 0.6% in Friday trading, closing at $69.29.

T-Mobile exec: 4G LTE-launch timing is 'perfect'

T-Mobile USA’s senior vice president of B2B services Frank Sickinger shared some LTE-related numbers and had some interesting things to say in a recent interview about the carrier’s upcoming LTE rollout in the United States.

It’s well known among mobile watchers that T-Mobile will be the last major U.S. carrier to rollout an LTE network. The popular opinion is that T-Mobile has fallen behind other carriers when it comes to LTE. Sickinger, not surprisingly, begs to differ.

For T-Mobile, “it’s not just about having [an] LTE [network], it’s about building a massive LTE footprint,” Sickinger says. “We already have sites that are lit up with LTE. But for us it’s about having the entire network modernized [before launch]. That’s not always the case with the competition.”

T-Mobile’s wireless evolution from EDGE technology to HSPA and eventually HSPA+ has been a long and laborious process, but the carrier is just about ready to rollout LTE across America. Following a breakup of the proposed T-Mobile/AT&T merger in late 2011, T-Mobile was able to secure significant new spectrum from AT&T, according to Sickinger, which helped it expand the overall network and boost the HSPA+ coverage.

Miyazaki: Dark Souls Shouldn't Have Multiple Sequels

The director of Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls has explained that he wouldn’t want to see many more entries in the franchise, as it’s “not the point” of the series.

In an interview with EDGEHidetaka Miyazaki revealed he didn’t want a bloated series to spawn from his past work, though he did give Dark Souls II his blessing.

“I

really care for Dark Souls VIII to come out. That’s not the point,” he explained. “It’s more, ‘What do the fans want?’ We want to stay true to what they expect.”

Miyazaki went on to admit he is a little regretful about not being as involved in the development of Dark Souls II as he was with its predecessors, but suggested it was time for some new blood to come in and help the series evolve. This time around, he’s adopting a supervisor role, meaning he won’t be involved in actual development.
