APNewsBreak: Video shows Miss. police HQ deaths
A person with knowledge of the investigation of a police officer who was killed by a murder suspect in an interrogation room says the shooting was recorded on video.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the ongoing investigation. The person also said the suspect, Jeremy Powell, was not handcuffed during the questioning.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says Powell overpowered Det. Eric Smith on Thursday and took his gun. Authorities say Powell shot the veteran detective four times before killing himself.
The AP has asked for the video to be released under open records laws, but authorities have not done so, saying it’s part of their investigation.

Murder suspect shoots Miss. cop inside police HQ
Authorities say a murder suspect shot an officer inside the Jackson, Miss., police headquarters and that both the suspect and detective are dead.
Police Chief Rebecca Coleman told reporters Thursday the suspect had been arrested and was being interviewed on the third floor when the shooting happened. She says those inside heard shots fired and when other officers entered the interview room, they found both the officer and suspect shot to death.
Police identified the officer as Detective Eric Smith. They did not name the suspect.
The headquarters is blocked off and surrounded by crime tape.
Jackson City Councilman Chokwe Lumumba was in police headquarters with the mayor and says Smith was shot by the suspect.
Lumumba is a lawyer. He says he met Smith in the late 1990s and that the detective had testified for some of Lumumba’s cases.

Supervalu Laying Off 1,100 Workers
By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool
Having sold off its Albertsons, Jewel, Acme, and Shaws/Star Markets chains, as well as its SAV-ON and OSCO in-store pharmacy businesses to a Cerberus-led investor group earlier this month, slimmer grocer Supervalu finds itself less in need of a large back office than it once did. Accordingly, the company announced plans Tuesday to lay off approximately 1,100 employees at its corporate HQ and store support centers.
In a statement, Supervalue Chief Executive Officer Sam Duncan called the layoffs decision “difficult,” but said it was necessary to begin “the rebuilding of our business” at its new smaller scale. As Duncan explained, a smaller Supervalu has “significantly fewer corporate and store support roles and functions” to fulfill, “making it important that the company restructure its operations and expenses accordingly.”
Frontline store employees, Duncan clarified, will be largely unaffected by the announcement.
Supervalu noted that employees who are laid off “will be offered severance and outplacement services based on SUPERVALU‘s eligibility guidelines.” The company did not provide guidance on how much the downsizings might cost, or how they will affect short-term (or long-term) earnings. Shareholders, however, seem optimistic. Supervalu shares are up 1.6% in early trading, hovering around $5.13 per share.

Jeep and Mopar Reveal Six New Concepts for This Year’s Moab Easter Jeep Safari
Ah, spring, when a young man’s thoughts turn from the cold, dark struggle of winter to busting across the sun-kissed Utah landscape in a kick-ass 4×4. For devotees of the Jeep brand, the annual Moab Jeep Safari not only is an off-roaders dream vacation, but also an opportunity to check out some of the wilder concept vehicles the Jeep brand and its Mopar associates have been brewing up during the winter. This year the pair took a half-dozen vehicles—three from Jeep, three from Mopar—and went to work, reconvening at Chrysler’s HQ in Auburn Hills for a final shakedown before shipping out for Moab. Although the FC Concept and the J10 retro-truck from last year’s outing didn’t leave much turf in left field unturned for 2013, the teams still managed to put together a mighty impressive group of vehicles made from equal parts dreams and ingenuity, while hinting at products to come. Here’s the lineup:
Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk II Concept
Arguably the most impressive thing about the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk II (pictured above) is how good it looks in person. Despite wearing jumbo-sized 35-inch Mickey Thompson tires on 17-inch wheels, the concept received no lift kit or suspension mods. To fit the tires, Jeep simply got busy with the Sawzall and opened up the wheel wells until the super-sized blackwall tires fit. Teamed with the custom flares and blood-orange paint, the results are ruggedly handsome. A 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 with a Banks Engineering exhaust provides motivation to the tune of 420 lb-ft of torque. Exterior mods include a Grand Cherokee SRT hood, SRT front and rear fascias that have been modified for extra ground clearance, a blacked-out grille, a matte-black roof, and one-off custom roof rails. Custom front and rear skid plates, dual rear tow hooks, and modified Mopar rock rails finish off the package. All in, this is one Grand Cherokee that means business.
Jeep Wrangler Flat Top
This is what your gramps would call an “immaculate chop.” No ragged edges, no ungainly transitions, just a two-inch drop in roof height that looks so clean that you’d need a stocker next to it to illustrate is radicalness. To achieve it, Jeep clipped the windshield and removed the B-pillar, which, in turn, necessitated removing all side glass, and then put it all back together. It may sound easy, but there are no plans for the aftermarket. The exterior is finished in metallic sandstone with copper and brown accents. The hood and bumpers are customized versions from the Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary model, and a massive Warn Zeon winch and a TeraFlex spare-tire carrier round off the exterior enhancements.
Power comes from a stock 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and a six-speed manual with a Mopar exhaust. A Mopar/Dynatrac Prorock 44 axle sits in front, a 60 in the rear, both out fitted with 5.38 gears and ARB lockers. Thirty-seven–inch Mickey Thompson tires provide the height without a lift kit, while the suspension is beefed up with King remote reservoir shocks, pneumatic bump stops, and …read more

Starwood Hotels and Resorts Relocates Global Headquarters to Dubai for Month-Long Immersion
CEO and Senior Leadership Team to Conduct Day-To-Day Business Out of Dubai, The New Crossroads of Global Travel
Following Insightful Relocation to China in 2011, Move to UAE Will Further Strengthen Starwood’s Global Vantage and Bring Company Closer to Key Growth Markets
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYS: HOT) today announced the beginning of a month-long relocation of its global headquarters from Stamford, CT to Dubai. From now until April 5th, Starwood President & CEO Frits van Paasschen and the company’s top executives will conduct day-to-day business from Dubai, an increasingly important global destination and travel hub. Following the company’s successful relocation to China in June 2011, this second leadership move reflects Starwood’s innovative management approach to cultivating a more global culture by understanding, appreciating and leveraging different societal perspectives and approaches to business and hospitality.
“With 80 percent of Starwood’s pipeline coming from rapidly growing markets, it is simply not possible to lead a truly global business from a boardroom in Connecticut,” said van Paasschen. “Rising wealth and ever greater global connectivity are creating a once-in-a-lifetime growth opportunity for our business – by fueling new demand, changing travel patterns, and entirely new travel markets. Dubai epitomizes this changing face of travel, and we expect this relocation will deepen our relationships with partners, associates and customers. Just as with our one-month relocation to China in 2011, our time in-market will spark new ideas that will fortify our position as the most global high-end hotel company.”
During the course of the relocation, more than 200 Starwood executives and GMs from the U.S., Europe, Asia and Latin America will travel to Dubai as the company runs day-to-day operations almost 7,000 miles and a nine-hour time zone away from its usual HQ outside New York City. The team will meet with associates, customers, owners and prospective developers in the UAE and also take advantage of Dubai’s location for business travel to destinations including Mumbai, Addis Ababa, Jeddah, Dushanbe and Kuwait.

2013 Dodge Dart Rallye 1.4T Manual Long-Term Intro: 40,000 Miles Wearing Header Orange Paint
The new Dart is being ballyhooed within the halls of Chrysler’s HQ as the car that will reestablish the Dodge brand among compact-car buyers—an important mission because Dodge hasn’t offered a viable small car in nearly a decade. The Neon had plucky charm, but it was replaced with the crudely executed and unloved Caliber just as small-car buyers were beginning to demand more refinement in the compact class. To find out whether the new-for-2013 Dart is worth any kind of hooing, we ordered one up for a 40,000-mile long-term test. READ MORE ››
Myanmar's Kachin rebels lose ground near HQ
Ethnic Kachin rebels in northern Myanmar say a massive government attack has ousted them from a key outpost that was one of the last lines of defense for their nearby headquarters.
A spokesman for the Kachin Independence Army says the outpost at Hka Ya Bhum was overrun Saturday afternoon by about 3,000 government troops backed by air and artillery attacks.
The spokesman, who asked to be identified only as Joseph, says attacks on the hilltop post began last week despite a cease-fire unilaterally declared by the government, and that fighting is continuing Sunday. He believes the government wants to occupy the Kachin headquarters at Laiza near the Chinese border, despite its denials.
The Kachin have long sought greater autonomy from the central government.

The China Hand is Dead: Long Live The China Hand
By Janet Carmosky, None The long term issue is that HQ can’t expect the people in China to figure out how to bridge back into the power structure. China Hands need a safe bridge to a problem solving exercises involving HQ, even when they are grounded in realities that HQ doesn’t like. A communication structure where the two sides connect. A group of people in the middle of a chronic disconnect.
