Carine Roitfeld Casts Models, Baby Wildlife in Pre-Fall Story For Harper's Bazaar

By Justin Fenner

Would the Pre-Fall 2013 collections make sense on safari? That seems to be the question Carine Roitfeld wanted to answer in her latest fashion story for Harper’s Bazaar, “The Animal Nursery.”

Roitfeld tasked Sebastian Faena with photographing the 16-page story, which features models like Kate Upton, Irina Shayk, and Tilda Lindstam and a variety of young animals including a disarmingly adorable ambush of baby tigers.

The story will run in all 26 international editions of Harper’s Bazaar, but you can take a look at a few of the images in advance here in the gallery.

All the Glossy Fashion Finalists For the 2013 National Magazine Awards

By Justin Fenner

Who says general-interest publications should have all the fun? The American Society of Magazine Editors on Monday announced the finalists for its 2013 National Magazine Awards, and the publishing industry’s women’s fashion titles more than held their own.

W, for example, is nominated twice: the magazine got a nod for the photography award and is also a finalist for the feature photography award, for Steven Klein‘s story “Good Kate, Bad Kate” in the March 2012 issue.

Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar are both finalists for the general excellence award for service and fashion magazines, and Bullett is a finalist for the design award.

A look at who else in fashion made the cut here in the gallery – and see all the finalists here.

Ali MacGraw Looks So Good In Short Shorts Back In The Day (PHOTO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Most know Ali MacGraw as a talented actress who appeared in films like “Goodbye, Columbus” and “Love Story,” but this gal is really a fashionista at heart. She began her career as a photo assistant at Harper’s Bazaar (working under the legendary Diana Vreeland), then tried her hand at modeling and even spent some time in the hallowed halls of Vogue as a stylist.

To celebrate MacGraw’s 74th birthday (on Apr.1), we are taking a look back at an old photo of the star. In this 1970 photograph, we see the icon on her way to a Hollywood Foreign Press Conference in a monochromatic look. We love how she mixed different textures to add visual interest to her outfit: Her boots are suede, her shorts are velvet and her sweater appears to be a light knit. Her dark brown bag is a nice contrast to the otherwise light-colored look, and gives it a very all-American feel. MacGraw gets a perfect score for this ensemble — and can we also say that short shorts have never looked so good?

Alber Elbaz on the Most Dangerous Thing in Fashion

By Justin Fenner

When you’ve been highly influential for as long as Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz has, your opinion tends to carry some weight. But Elbaz, who spent Monday afternoon on a stage doing a Q&A with Harper’s Bazaar editor in chief Glenda Bailey, was as charming and humble as he’s been for all of his 20-plus years in the business.

In a wide-ranging conversation about his life and career, Elbaz told Bailey and the assembled audience about his work for Geoffrey Beene – who taught him never to use the word “commercial” – to the fall of John Galliano, and what he thinks is the most dangerous thing facing the fashion industry today. A look at some of his thoughts, here. …read more

Cover Stories: The Best and Worst-Selling Magazines of 2012

By Justin Fenner

Movie stars and magazine covers go hand in hand, but according to new numbers from the Alliance for Audited Media, some of the best newsstand sale numbers for 2012 belong to musicians and supermodels.

For example, Lady Gaga‘s September cover of Vogue has been the title’s best-selling issue of 2012. Gwen Stefani was Harper’s Bazaar‘s best-seller in September, and Brooke Shield‘s cover of Architectural Digest was also a hit on the newsstand.

At the low end, Kim Kardashian and her sisters Kourtney and Khloe failed to deliver high sales for Glamour, and Vogue’s Olympic-themed June cover – starring athletes Hope Solo, Ryan Lochte, and Serena Williams – was the title’s worst-selling issue of the year.

A look at whose covers sold well – and whose didn’t – here in the gallery.

Selena Gomez & Hooters: Disney Star Helped Dad Pick Up Waitresses At Chain Restaurant (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Selena Gomez was once a favorite at Hooters.

The 20-year-old Texas beauty covers the April issue of Harper’s Bazaar and reveals inside that when she was a little girl she used to help her father, Ricardo, pick up waitresses at Hooters after her dad split from her mom.

“When I was seven, my dad would go to Hooters to watch [San Antonio] Spurs games, but he started noticing that when I would come, with my little pigtails, all the waitresses would be like, ‘Hey!’” Gomez tells Bazaar about her Hooters trips, according to the New York Post. “So he ended up spending time with me but with all those cute girls coming over. And that became our thing.”
