Report: NBC recaptures NASCAR coverage through 2024

By Brandon Turkus

NASCAR Sprint Cup Race at Bristol Motor Speedway

Filed under:

NASCAR has pared its broadcasts down to two providers – Fox and NBC. According to a report from USA Today, the recently inked deal will give the Peacock Network exclusive rights to the last 20 Sprint Cup races, the last 19 Nationwide races, all K&N and Whelen Modified races, the NASCAR Toyota Mexico series, Hall of Fame and banquet ceremonies, live-streams for both Sprint Cup and Nationwide races, and Spanish broadcasting rights on Telemundo and Mun2. Got all that?

The deal is in effect until 2024, but won’t officially kick off until the 2015 season, when NBC and Fox will begin sharing in earnest. The two networks are likely to air some of the races on the NBC Sports network and Fox Sports 1 (which replaces Speed TV), respectively.

Financial details have not been revealed for the NBC deal yet. Fox and NASCAR’s tie-up, which was renewed last fall, was valued at $2.4 billion, and gets the News Corp-owned network broadcast rights for the Daytona 500, 12 Sprint Cup races, practicing and qualifying, and the Camping World Truck Series.

The network shift will see ABC/ESPN and Turner Broadcasting end their NASCAR programming with the 2014 season.

Motorsports: Rutledge Wood wins Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in Long Beach

By Zach Bowman

Rutledge Wood Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race

Filed under:

Rutledge Wood took home the checkered flag at this year’s Toyota Pro/Celebrity race at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. The Top Gear USA presenter, Fox Sports commentator and Honda Wagovan owner managed to take pole position in qualifying, but lost his lead early in the race to Mark Steines. Steines has competed in the Pro/Celebrity race four times so far, but the Hallmark channel host of Home and Family couldn’t quite hold on to the lead. Wood eventually made up the ground he had lost for the win. This year, all the participants went fender to fender in identically prepared Scion FR-S racers.

Meanwhile, Adam Carolla took first in the Pro category, and Toyota donated $5,000 on behalf of each participant to Racing for Kids. The charity benefits children’s hospitals in the Long Beach area, and this year Toyota donated a total of $90,000. Check out the full press release below for more information.

Fox Won't Topple ESPN on Day One, but So What?

By 24/7 Wall St.

80s tv set graphic

Filed under:

by Jon Friedman

Fox Sports 1, News Corp.’s new 24-hour television network, doesn’t have to topple ESPN to be a success.

There is enough room in the global sports-TV world to accommodate both media-industry superpowers.

Fox Sports 1 will launch in approximately 90 million U.S. households as opposed to the 99 million on ESPN and ESPN2. Fox Sports 1′s daily 11:00 p.m. Fox Sports Live show will challenge ESPN‘s traditional meal-ticket SportsCenter.

Perhaps Rupert Murdoch‘s greatest triumph, the Fox News Channel – steered brilliantly by Roger Ailes all through these years – has spoiled all of us when we take a critical eye to Fox Sports 1′s prospects. It helps to recall that it took FNC many years to establish itself and still more to surpass Time Warner’s (NYSE: TWX) CNN, which it surely did. Fox News, which holds a stranglehold on the cable news ratings, didn’t dominate the industry overnight. But it has been No. 1 in the ratings for so long that we automatically assume it was born in the top spot.

So, don’t look for Fox Sports 1 to crush ESPN on day one. Or even on day two or three, either. These things take time, you know.

“Our hope is that we can be equally professional” with ESPN, noted David Hill to the members of the media. Hill directed Fox Sports when it debuted two decades ago and will lead the new venture. “It’s going to take us a while,” he conceded. “We’re not expecting to knock ESPN off in the first week or two. It’s going to take two or three years. It will be a slog.”

News Corp. (NASDAQ: NWSA)will point proudly to its great success in cable news. “But Fox execs conveniently left out its failed attempt in the 1990s to create national sports TV programming, led on-air by then-ESPN refugee Keith Olbermann,” pointed out USA Today Sports.

The narrow-minded members of the media would like us to believe that the smackdown between ESPN, the crown jewel of Walt Disney Co., and Fox Sports 1, Rupert Murdoch‘s new baby, which launches on Aug. 17, will be – or has to be, anyway – some sort of a bloodsport between News Corp and Walt Disney. The two companies will compete furiously – naturally – but there are enough programming opportunities to go around.

We’ll get an idea of News Corp.’s commitment when it bids for the broadcasting rights to show college basketball games. The new Fox entity could also try to acquire the rights to Thursday night National Football League games (though these didn’t exactly set the world on fire last season). Murdoch’s operation may also ultimately attempt to outbid the competition for the National Basketball Association showcase.

A successful launch will boost the stockmarket prospects of Fox Sports 1′s parent company. Wall Street relishes splashy new products and likes to reward companies for show is of great ambition. Stock-pickers turn thumbs down on companies that either can’t or won’t launch new ideas. Rupert Murdoch has historically been a maverick …read more

Fox to Launch New Sports Network

By Eric Volkman, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

News Corp. subsidiary Fox Sports Media Group announced that it is to launch an omnibus sports TV channel. FSMG said the Fox Sports 1 network will launch on Aug. 17 and be available to 90 million homes. It is to feature live events in college basketball and football, NASCAR racing, soccer, and UFC mixed martial arts. The channel promises “around-the-clock coverage” delivered via regular updates and a news ticker.

Next year, Fox Sports 1 will also carry regular and postseason Major League Baseball games.

The long-rumored move pits Fox directly against Disney‘s venerable family of ESPN sports channels.

Report: Speed will be renamed Fox Sports 1

By Michael Harley

Speed logo

Filed under:

As we first reported last October, it appears that the Speed channel – currently offered in more than 80 million homes in North America – will likely be rebranded as Fox Sports 1 late this summer. The renaming will allow Fox to broaden the channel’s focus and air content from its Major League Baseball and National Football League contracts. A more general sports format will also position Fox more aggressively against ESPN and its various sports channels.

There is no word as to what the network plans to do with Speed’s 75,000 square-foot facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, but its current renovation may be part of the plan to turn it into an anchor desk for Fox Sports 1.

Pending an official announcement from Fox, there has been no mention as the to fate of Speed’s automotive content – both The List and Translogic, AOL‘s programming, currently appear on the Speed.
