Volkswagen Will Bring the Phaeton Back to America—Just Not for Another Two Years

By Jens Meiners

The next generation of the Volkswagen Phaeton will, in fact, be offered in the U.S., but don’t expect it to be unveiled any time soon. There is no substance to rumors that it will be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit auto show, company sources have told Car and Driver. Look instead for a debut late in 2014 or 2015, likely at a European or Chinese auto show, before coming to market as a 2016 model. There is no urgency on VW’s part to replace the venerable luxury sedan.

The original Phaeton, a pet project of Ferdinand Piëch that was launched in 2002, has not performed well in North America—or anywhere else, for that matter. It was yanked from American VW dealers after the 2006 model by former VW CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder as part of his power struggle with Piëch, who heads the supervisory board. However, a company insider tell us that the discontinuation of VW’s S-class–fighter was “one of the smartest decisions ever,” adding, “We couldn’t give them away.”

The Dresden-built luxo-cruiser serves as the technical basis for Bentley’s Continental GT and Flying Spur, actually surpassing both in several aspects when it comes to attention to detail. Despite that enormous technological merit, the Phaeton has been let down by Volkswagen’s image—it’s awfully tough to sell the uninitiated on a $93,000 VW, even if it does have chops good enough for Bentley.

The second generation of the Phaeton is being developed to make use of the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform, which is loosely shared with the Audi A8, and will return to American showrooms. Our intelligence suggests that the new Phaeton will be powered by a choice of a turbocharged VR6, a turbocharged V-8, a V-6 turbo-diesel, and potentially a hybrid in some form. Unfortunately, we hear there’s very little chance that the Group’s famous W-12 has a future in the Phaeton. Even if engineered to perfection, as we fully expect the next Phaeton to be, it won’t be quite the same without four banks of cylinders providing seemingly endless thrust for the most luxurious VW-badged ride imaginable.

Italdesign Giugiaro’s Parcour Concept Is 360˚ of Beguiling Confusion [In the Round Photos]

By Car and Driver

2013 Geneva auto show full coverage

Volkswagen holds Group Night festivities ahead of most of the world’s leading auto expos, wherein each brand within the Group debuts a new model or concept. They’re usually a balance of tame—think whatever Škoda’s doing—and wild—so Porsche and Lamborghini. This year’s Geneva event turned the heat way up, hosting the unveils of the Lamborghini Veneno, the Bentley Flying Spur, and the Porsche 911 GT3. Even VW’s new station wagon drew a healthy amount of buzz. Some in our office, however, think that all were upstaged by this beast, Italdesign Giugiaro’s unhinged Parcour concept.

The crossover/sports car/off-roader is unique, to say the least, so we thought we’d give it the In the Round 360-degree photo treatment. If you’re wondering how the Parcour (inspired by the urban jump-over-things “sport,” parkour) ended up sharing the spotlight with the aforementioned Veneno, Flying Spur, and GT3, keep in mind that Volkswagen owns the Italian design house.

Geneva: Rolls-Royce Wraith revealed, ready to battle Bentley

By John Neff

Filed under:

Bentley may have rounded out the redesign of its Continental line of cars with the new Flying Spur four-door’s debut at this week’s Geneva Motor Show, but Rolls-Royce has shown up in Switzerland with the Wraith, a GT coupe version of the Ghost sedan that moves the brand one step closer to having an answer for everything that wears a Flying B.

The Wraith’s natural combatant would be Bentley’s Continental GT Coupe, though as all Rollers come in orders of magnitude more expensive than their already costly competitors from Crewe, the new coupe’s €245,000 initial starting price will be $100k USD more than the base price of the most expensive Continental, a GT Speed coupe.

What your CEO bonus money will get you is a 624-bhp V12 engine cranking out 590 pound-feet of torque. The sprint to 60 miles per hour will pass by in 4.4 seconds, with a unique 8-speed ZF automatic transmission snapping off shifts using a new Satellite Aided Transmission technology that works with GPS to pre-select the right gear for not only the road you’re on, but the road you’ll be coming up on ahead.

Rolls-Royce is also pushing the bounds of technology inside the Wraith relying heavily on voice commands, what it calls an ‘on-board valet,’ to input instructions and data into the nav and infotainment systems. For those who prefer more tactile inputs, a Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller accepts inputs via a touchpad that offers pinch-to-zoom and character drawing functionality.

The Wraith wouldn’t be allowed to wear the winged goddess if it didn’t pamper its passengers, and that goal is achieved in typical Rolls fashion with herds of “Phantom-grade” cow-hide, expanses of new Canadel Panellng wood trim, and the first use of the brand’s unique Starlight Headliner fiber optic headliner outside the Phantom range.

We’ll have live images of the Wraith’s debut in Geneva soon, but you can dine on this gallery of fine official images until then and have a servant read you the official press release below.

Geneva: 2014 Bentley Flying Spur makes its Swiss debut

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 Bentley Flying Spur

Filed under:

Ever since the two-door Bentley Continental GT debuted in 2010, we’ve wondered how the coupe’s new design and technology would carry over to the four-door Flying Spur model. We received official details and images a couple of weeks ago, but we’ve now had the chance to see the Spur in person here on the eve of the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

It’s a handsome sedan, this 2014 Flying Spur (which has officially ditched the Continental nomenclature, for what it’s worth). And even more handsome in the metal. The stock photos don’t do this big beast justice – especially in the rear three-quarter and profile views, where aspects of the car (namely its newly horizontal-shaped taillamps) can look a bit awkward.

More impressively, Bentley says that the new Flying Spur will be the “fastest, most powerful four-door” it has ever produced. Makes sense to us, especially considering the fact that the sedan borrows its twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 powertrain from the Continental GT Speed coupe. This twelve-pot mill is good for 616 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, able to propel the 5,451-pound, all-wheel-drive sedan to 60 miles per hour in 4.3 seconds. That’s quick.

Of course, what’s inside the Flying Spur‘s cabin will be just as impressive as what’s under the hood, with every single luxury amenity you can think of available inside the leather-laden cabin. Both four- and five-passenger seating arrangements will be available, and like all Bentley models, the individual customization options will no doubt be endless.

Have a gander for yourself in the high-res image gallery above, and look below for the official press blast.

Britain's Rolls, Bentley fight luxury battle for German owners

The logo and sign of Rolls-Royce is seen at its Seletar campus in Singapore

LONDON (Reuters) – British carmakers Rolls-Royce and Bentley will unveil new vehicles at the Geneva Motor Show next week, joining battle in the fast-growing luxury end of the market on behalf of their German owners. BMW's Rolls-Royce will debut a two-door coupé version of its Ghost model, known as the Wraith, which the company says will be its most powerful vehicle yet. Meanwhile Bentley, part of the Volkswagen empire, will unveil its updated Flying Spur, its speediest ever four-door model. …

Official: 2014 Bentley Flying Spur brings new design to four-door Continental

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

After showing us a couple teasers recently, not to mention the leakage of official shots earlier today, Bentley has finally pulled the cover off the all-new 2014 Flying Spur, which will receive its global debut next month at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The big, bespoke sedan not only promises plenty of luxury in its full redesign, but Bentley is also saying that the new Flying Spur will be the “fastest, most powerful four-door” model it has ever produced.

To make sure it comes through on that bold statement, the 2014 Flying Spur is powered by the same twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 engine used in the Continental GT Speed. In the Flying Spur, this 12-cylinder engine produces 616 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, and it sends that power to the ground through a new eight-speed automatic transmission and a rear-biased (40/60) all-wheel-drive system. Launching the 5,451-pound sedan from 0-60 miles per hour will take just 4.3 seconds and 100 mph comes in less than 10 seconds; overall top speed is rated at 200 mph. Even with all that power and mass, Bentley is still expecting the next-generation Flying Spur to return better EPA fuel economy than the current model with projected (but not certified) estimates of 12 miles per gallon in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

Befitting of its more powerful engine, the Flying Spur also gets a more athletic appearance with a more upright face, arched front and rear fenders and horizontal taillights that better distinguish it from the Continental GT. The new roofline also gives the car a sportier shape and the side windows add a more contemporary look, but this car is almost identical in size to the current model including the massive rear overhang, which helps accommodate 16.8 cubic feet of cargo.

For a car that will surely retain a starting price of just under $300,000 for the base model, there will be no shortage of luxury or technology inside the Flying Spur. The Flying Spur is offered with either seating for five or a four-passenger layout with a full-length center console. Front occupants are treated to the same interior found on the Continental including the dual brow instrument panel, the sporty, three-spoke steering wheel and the large touchscreen display. Some of the optional features for rear passengers to enjoy include a 1,100-watt, 11-speaker Naim audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system with a pair of 10-inch displays and there’s even the availability of a WiFi hotspot.

Report: Bentley Flying Spur pictures leaked early

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

We can imagine that automakers are among the groups salivating at the prospect of a colony on Mars – perhaps a photo studio on the red planet will be far enough away from the terrestrial Internet to keep everything they’ve got from leaking all over the web. In the midst of Bentley’s teasing for the next-generation Flying Spur, someone got in early on a set of photos and decided to share them with us.

The transformation is all about character, the super sedan’s lines getting injected with a whole lot more of it. The family face of the Continental line is evident, the new Spur getting a more upright grille than before and a Mulsanne-esque undivided lower grille. The front fenders get narrow, horizontal vents, and behind that the character line that starts with at the hood shutline runs in a long arc to the rear door, then rolls up into haunches that terminate at the very back. Lower down, a character line cuts up the bulk up the sides. In profile there is a definite hint of this being a junior Mulsanne.

The only item we see at the moment that could take some getting used to are the horizontal taillights. Housing a large single element topped by curved red brows, our initial impression is that they lack the flow of the rest of the car. Inside, it’s what you’d expect from a Bentley.

There’s a chance we’ll know more about it later today, the date Bentley planned to fill us in on the union of performance and luxury. Or, knowing the Internet, we might know more even sooner…

Video: Bentley teases new Flying Spur sedan

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Bentley has released another teaser video for its redesigned Flying Spur, and the next generation car is looking less like a grown up Continental GT and more like a junior Mulsanne. A viewing of the first teaser vid revealed a more upright grille, a three-spoke steering wheel, horizontal taillights and quarter panels with angles and curves certifiably lifted from the Mulsanne. After this second video, we can add lower door panels with a more aggressive shape, horizontal vents in the fenders and a rear end with the shape of proper haunches.

The English motorcar maker promises us we’ll see more on February 20, when “performance and luxury unite.” We’ll be there in person when the “Camry for rich people” is revealed at the Geneva Motor Show next month. You’ll find the videographic appetizer below.

2014 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible First Drive: Luxuriously Fast

By Jens Meiners

2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible W12

The officer had had enough. Having seen four journalist-driven convertibles breeze by his Police Interceptor at velocities between 80 and 95 mph, he motions Bentley PR’s own Flying Spur, approaching rapidly, to pull over. I hear the story later: “How many cars were in the group,” he demanded to know, and followed with a warning that “The next one will pay.” READ MORE ››

Bentley Previews 2014 Flying Spur Sedan [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

2014 Bentley Flying Spur

Bentley has released a preview sketch and video of its redesigned Flying Spur sedan, promising to release more info by the end of the month. The automaker—which just redesigned its Continental GT coupe and GTC convertible lineup for 2013—did not offer any details about its latest four-door, but based on the timing of its proposed info dump, we’d say the car is slated to debut at the 2013 Geneva auto show in early March. The Flying Spur is likely to join the larger Mulsanne, which is getting fancier duds for 2014, on the company’s show stand there.

2014 Bentley Flying Spur

You’ll notice that Bentley’s video (embedded below), as well as its announcement for the new Flying Spur, lacks any mention of the Continental name. It looks as though Bentley is dropping the moniker—previously shared with the Flying Spur’s coupe and convertible counterparts—moving forward. From what we can tell from spy photos of the 2014 Flying Spur and this preview, it will get updated sheetmetal, re-shaped taillights, and more; check it out in the video below:

Video: Bentley teases new Flying Spur before Geneva debut

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Last time we saw the 2014 Bentley Continental Flying Spur out testing, our only questions about the new car regarded its rear-end styling, and when the car would debut. Well now we know for certain that the car will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, and we’re also getting a better idea of what the car will look like thanks to Bentley releasing a brief teaser video.

The easiest-to-spot detail that we see in this Flying Spur video is the car’s horizontal taillights – the first such on a Bentley since the 1990s. We can also see that this hyper-luxury sedan will get a more squared-off front end than its Continental GT counterpart. But, from what we can tell, it will receive a similarly laid out interior, including the three-spoke steering wheel.

Scroll down to watch the video, and we’ve also attached the single-sentence press release in which Bentley promises to reveal more details about the car on February 20.

Bentley Design Chief Donckerwolke Bins EXP 9 F Concept, Working on New SUV and Continental

By Jens Meiners

Bentley EXP 9 F SUV concept

A few months into his tenure as Bentley chief designer, Volkswagen Group’s star designer Luc Donckerwolke is shaking up operations to prepare the brand for the future. Shortly after the departure of exterior design chief David Hilton, Donckerwolke has hired former GM and VW Group designer Sang Yup Lee to take charge. Meanwhile, former interior chief Robin Page has left Bentley to work with former VW Group designer Thomas Ingenlath at Volvo. Page’s replacement will be announced shortly.

Donckerwolke and his team have their work cut out for them. While the brand is pushing an SUV into production, the EXP 9 F concept—unveiled to incredulous eyes at the Geneva auto show last year—has been canned. After Geneva, it was shown not only at the Beijing show, but surprisingly also at last year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance. Now the brand is working on a sportier and more contemporary interpretation of an SUV.

Work also is progressing on the next-generation Continental GT, which will break away from the current look. Because of budget constraints during its development process, the second-generation Continental GT is little more than an extensive face lift. At least its Flying Spur derivative, finalized before Donckerwolke came on board, will be more differentiated from the first-generation model than the two-door Continentals were.

Donckerwolke is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Vevey, Switzerland. He joined Audi in 1992 and held different positions at Audi and Škoda, then moved to Lamborghini in 1998 and became the brand’s chief designer in 2003. Two years after that promotion, Donckerwolke took over as chief designer of Seat; he became head of the Volkswagen Group’s advanced design in 2011.

He was heavily involved in the Audi A2, first-generation Škoda Fabia and Octavia, and the Lamborghini Gallardo and Murciélago. Donckerwolke is a genuine car guy; his personal collection includes a Lamborghini Espada, a Lamborghini Miura, a VW-Porsche 914/6 race car, a BMW 3.0 CSI, and a Fiat 850 Coupé Sport. His level of enthusiasm for grand-turismo cars is hard to surpass.
