Italdesign Giugiaro’s Parcour Concept Is 360˚ of Beguiling Confusion [In the Round Photos]

By Car and Driver

2013 Geneva auto show full coverage

Volkswagen holds Group Night festivities ahead of most of the world’s leading auto expos, wherein each brand within the Group debuts a new model or concept. They’re usually a balance of tame—think whatever Škoda’s doing—and wild—so Porsche and Lamborghini. This year’s Geneva event turned the heat way up, hosting the unveils of the Lamborghini Veneno, the Bentley Flying Spur, and the Porsche 911 GT3. Even VW’s new station wagon drew a healthy amount of buzz. Some in our office, however, think that all were upstaged by this beast, Italdesign Giugiaro’s unhinged Parcour concept.

The crossover/sports car/off-roader is unique, to say the least, so we thought we’d give it the In the Round 360-degree photo treatment. If you’re wondering how the Parcour (inspired by the urban jump-over-things “sport,” parkour) ended up sharing the spotlight with the aforementioned Veneno, Flying Spur, and GT3, keep in mind that Volkswagen owns the Italian design house.

Lamborghini Veneno: 360-Degree Photography of the $4 Million Three-Off [In the Round]

By Car and Driver

2013 Geneva auto show full coverage

Here at C/D, we use words to put you behind the wheel of the cars we cover and review, but there’s often a compelling story to be told through simply looking at a car. So we came up with a way to bring you closer to the coolest and newest rides: Full 360-degree views, which we’ll be posting regularly in a new feature we’re calling In the Round. To kick things off, we set our cameras loose on Lamborghini’s ridiculously outrageous Veneno, which just debuted at Volkswagen’s pre-show event for the 2013 Geneva auto show. Just three of the exotics will be made at a price of nearly $4 million per, and all are spoken for.

The Aventador LP700-4–based Veneno has so many chisels, folds, and eye-catching details that giving it the pole position in our In the Round feature seemed like destiny. (We previously tested In the Round photography using a purple Dodge Challenger SRT8 Core at the 2013 Chicago auto show.) Simply click and drag the window below to take the Veneno for a (virtual) spin, and look for more In the Rounds very soon.

2014 Cadillac CTS Sedan to Debut in New York [2013 New York Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

2014 Cadillac CTS (spy photo)

Cadillac is in the midst of an overhaul of its car lineup, having recently released the new ATS and XTS sedans—and now the brand’s CTS sedan is coming in for a redesign. The 2014 CTS is expected to go on sale later this year, but an Autoweek report has revealed the new Caddy will make its big debut next month at the 2013 New York auto show. A Cadillac representative has confirmed to us that this is the case.

The new CTS is expected to arrive with a turbo four-cylinder engine and a range of V-6s spanning 3.0–3.6 liters in displacement; a twin-turbo V-6 is a strong possibility, as well. Cadillac is stretching the CTS lengthwise to better position it against mid-size sports-sedan competitors from Germany and Japan, leaving the smaller ATS to go head-to-head against the compact luxury sports-sedan competition. (The outgoing CTS was closer in size to sedans like BMW’s 5-series or Benz’s E-class, but priced closer to the 3-series or C-class.) Don’t expect big changes to the car’s styling—it should be fairly evolutionary—but prepare to lament the loss of the super-cool CTS wagon, which won’t return for the CTS’s third generation.

Lamborghini Unveils Latest and Final Gallardo GT3 Race Car

By Alexander Stoklosa

Lamborghini’s Gallardo is a dead model walking, er, rolling—a new one is coming for 2014—but that doesn’t mean the Italian automaker can’t squeeze just a bit more juice from the current version. Last year, the company refreshed the Gallardo and subsequently released an updated LP570-4 Super Trofeo racing version. Now the Gallardo GT3 race car is being updated, as well, to both mimic the pedestrian 2013 Gallardo’s fresh look and to improve its racing performance.

Just like the Gallardo GT3 that came before it, the new GT3 FL2 was co-developed by Reiter Engineering and Lamborghini’s motorsports arm. The duo fitted the Gallardo with a new aerodynamic body kit, beefed up the brakes to better handle endurance racing, and trimmed 55 pounds from its curb weight. Sounds good to us, but let’s be real—this car’s true appeal lies with its bad-ass, super-awesome looks. Plus, at €320,000 (that’s $430,000 at current exchange rates), the Gallardo GT3 undercuts McLaren’s MP4-12C GT3 car by nearly $100,000. So there’s that.

Deliveries of the new Gallardo GT3 begin this spring, and the car will compete in the Blancpain Endurance Series, Asia Le Mans Series, and the Italian GT3 Championship this year and next. Lamborghini also announced that it has entered into a (minimum) five-year agreement with Reiter Engineering to help it field GT3 cars, meaning the racing version of the Gallardo’s replacement will be handled by Reiter, as well.

Destiny’s Child: VL Automotive Debuts the Karma-Based Destino [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

By Andrew Wendler

VL Automotive Destino

Retirement means different things to different people; for auto-industry superhero Bob Lutz it means business as usual, keeping in the mix with not one, but two automotive startups. But as where VIA motors is taking GM trucks and vans and electrifying them for fleet customers, VL Automotive is taking Fisker Karma hybrids and transforming them to run on fossil-fueled GM horsepower.

Never one to waste time or mince words, Lutz has joined forces with Gilbert Villarreal, president of Auburn Hills–based automotive supplier the Concorde Group, to form VL Automotive. Together, they aim to “build an American-made sports sedan with advanced aesthetics that can beat the best from Italy and Germany while maintaining a high level of reliability.” (Last we checked the Fisker Karma body was assembled in Finland, so unless they’re secretly planning to assemble the bodies here, they may need to amend the “American-made” part.) If all goes according to the dynamic duo’s plan, restyled Fisker Karmas with a GM-sourced V-8 under the hood will be rolling off the line of their assembly plant by late 2013.

VL Automotive Destino supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine

Dubbed the Destino, VL Automotive has made a few cosmetic changes to the Karma, the most obvious being a completely new hood, new front and rear fasciae, a new decklid spoiler, and the replacement of the solar panel roof with a traditional piece. Not only do the changes improve the car’s visual appeal, but, according to company spokesman Tom Sundberg, also were required to meet the exclusive contract VL Automotive hammered out with Fisker.

The conversion uses the entire Corvette powertrain: Available with a choice in V-8 powerplats—the 6.2-liter LT1 or the supercharged 6.2-liter LS9—coupled to a rear transaxle via a torque-tube setup, the Destino utilizes some of the newfound, battery-vacated space to house an entirely new rear subframe assembly (required to support the transaxle). The LT1-powered car is rated at 450 horsepower and the LS9-motivated Destino at 638 horsepower; transmission options are limited to a four-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. “When we get it dialed in, we’d like to be able to say it’s a 200-mph supercar,” said Sundberg.

Don Runkle, current EcoMotors CEO and former chief engineer for Chevrolet, who was on hand for VL’s press conference in Detroit offered C/D a few succinct words regarding the recent efforts of Lutz and Co.: “When I was at GM, we always asked ourselves, ‘Should we build a four-door Corvette?’ To me, that’s what it looks like they’ve done. And it’s got the right-size battery for a high-performance car, which is zero.”

VL Automotive Destino

The two cars on display in Detroit are the first examples assembled from the first eight Karmas purchased by VL (the remaining vehicles are being used for development and marketing purposes). VL figures the first 20 or so will be built from decontented Karmas, but is in the process of negotiating terms for a supply of gliders—Karmas with no powertrain installed—direct from Fisker. This must be music to the ears of Fisker, who halted production last fall because of the bankruptcy of its battery supplier.

Pricing, as you might expect, is yet to be announced although we’re hearing that it will cost somewhere around the $180,000 range. One of the vehicles VL placed on its stand already has been sold to the owner of an unnamed company that is supplying VL Automotive with components for the Destino.

Destino essentially means “destiny” in Spanish, and as far as VL is concerned, it’s inevitable that a car as stunning as the Karma would eventually have a powertrain that can back up its looks. Sounds like fate to us.
