Official: Galpin imagines what Ford's GT would look like today with Pebble-bound coupe

By Brandon Turkus

Filed under:

Galpin Auto Sports will be bringing its first coachbuilt supercar to this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Called the Galpin Ford GTR1, it’s a 1000-plus-horsepower monster based on the Ford GT. The reimagined supercar sports a 5.4-liter, supercharged V8 capable of rocketing the slinky GT-based coupe to over 225 miles per hour. Yowza.

When the GTR1 enters production, owners can choose between both carbon fiber and aluminum vehicle bodies. The car that will arrive at Pebble Beach will wear a metal body, sporting a smoother, more modern shape than the Ford GT. Actually, it kind of reminds us of the Shelby GR-1 Concept from the 2005 Detroit Auto Show. The cabin features plenty of machined aluminum and leather, while a McIntosh stereo will pamper audiophiles that tire of the mid-mounted V8.

Pirelli PZero tires hug 20-inch, forged aluminum wheels, while six-piston calipers and carbon rotors are poised to bring that crazy speed to a sudden halt. We’ll have more on the Galpin Ford GTR1 when it makes its first public appearance at The Quail on August 15, before it’s grand debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 18.

Cadillac to Prune Wreath from Logo, According to Reports

By Andrew Wendler

According to a report in Automotive News, Cadillac is working on the first major revision of its logo in a decade. The report quotes several unnamed sources as saying that the redesign will eliminate the “classic laurel wreaths that surround its crest,” and will “likely appear on concept vehicle Cadillac plans to show next month at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.” Continue reading Cadillac to Prune Wreath from Logo, According to Reports

Spy Shots: BMW M3, M4 let loose on the 'Ring

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2015 BMW M4 - spy shot on 'Ring

Filed under:

We just posted our first drive of the 2014 BMW 435i yesterday, but for those wanting even more power from this stylish coupe, help is on the way. From the sounds of it, BMW will be showing off a production-ready concept previewing the M4 next month at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, but until then, we have some new spy shots of the performance coupe being tested at the Nürburgring, along with its four-door counterpart, the M3.

Despite all the camouflage, it doesn’t take much imagination to picture what both cars will look like, since we can clearly see the more aggressive front fascia and beefier brake setup. One interesting element we see on both cars is a double bubble roof that is almost certainly made from carbon fiber. Based on our report earlier, both the M4 Coupe and M3 Sedan are expected to debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Official: Bugatti to debut special Grand Sport Vitesse 'Legend Jean-Pierre Wimille' during Monterey Car Week

By Damon Lowney

Filed under:

Bugatti has announced that it will offer the Legend, a special-edition run of the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse that pays homage to six heroes of the carmaker’s long, storied past. Officially the world’s fastest car with its top down (try keeping your toupee on at 254 miles per hour), Bugatti will enhance the special Vitesses visually with design cues from the cars that its heroes drove.

The first Legend honors Jean-Pierre Wimille, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice for Bugatti and was one of the company’s longest-serving test drivers. He won in 1937, co-driving a 57G Tank with Robert Benoist, and in 1939, co-driving a 57C Tank with Pierre Veyron. Fittingly, the Veyron Legend dedicated to Wimille is blue, just like the 57G that he drove at Le Mans in 1937. In Bugatti’s own words, it “now shines in blue clear-coated carbon fiber and a light Wimille Bleu paintwork.” The 57G-based design language continues into the interior, with numerous details, such as materials and colors, that represent what Wimille would have experienced driving the Bugatti.

Pricing hasn’t been announced, but if you have to ask, you can’t afford it. It also should be noted that the Wimille edition Legend will be limited to a production run of three. As for the other five Legend editions? All we know is that they’ll be launched over the next 12 months. Look for the Wimille Legend on display next month in Monterey, Calif., at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

In the meantime, scroll down to check out the history-heavy Bugatti press release. No photos of the Veyron Legend were provided, so feel free to visit the gallery we included of the Grand Sport Vitesse’s record-setting open-top run.

Report: Cadillac logo losing its wreath?

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

The easily recognizable Cadillac logo dates back to the company’s founding in the early 1900s, but over the last 110 years, there has been an on-again, off-again love affair with the wreath surrounding the crest. Cadillac’s current badge design has used the wreath since the 1980s, but Automotive News is reporting that GM’s luxury division is planning to ditch the laurel wreath for a cleaner-looking logo.

The new logo could make its debut as early as next month on a new concept car that will be revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, although the report also says that it might be until 2015 before it makes its way to a production car. Even then, it doesn’t like anything has been finalized yet, as the article also says that plans could still change.

As Cadillac looks to improve its global presence as a luxury automaker, the report says that a simpler logo could make it easier for designers to incorporate the badge onto the car – either in the grille or above the grille (possibly in a fashion similar to Mercedes-Benz). Head on over to the AN article, which shows the Cadillac logo dating back to its earliest design.

Ventura Farms Inaugural Concours Invitational doesn't disappoint

By Michael Harley

Filed under:

Countless vintage automobile events are held all around the world on any given day, but few are able to match the caliber of exclusive machinery displayed at the Ventura Farms Inaugural Concours Invitational. The event, held last month on the private 2,200-acre ranch estate of billionaire David H. Murdock (the Chairman and CEO of Dole and Castle and Cooke) just north of Los Angeles, CA, offered guests a look at dozens of classic automobiles set among beautifully manicured gardens, ponds and Thai sculptural boulders mined from the River Kwai in Thailand. With the weather near perfect, and the cars in equal state, some were arguing that the venue was every bit as spectacular as Pebble Beach.

While it would have been easy to feast on the savory foods, premium beer and wine, we forced our camera to our face and shot a gallery for everyone outside the secured gates to enjoy. The 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Streamline Saloon, a Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Winner, was spectacular, but our eyes were drawn to the bright green 1947 Delahaye 135MS (shown above) with its clear acrylic steering wheel and matching knobs and buttons. The 1929 Auburn 8-120 Boattail Speedster was also a favorite, with its sleek… stern.

As expected, tickets to the event were pricey ($100 each) but every single penny generated went to raise money for a local park and YMCA. Look for next year’s event to take place in March, and be sure to get your tickets early as this inaugural concours sold out weeks in advance.

2013 Pininfarina Sergio Concept: Paying Homage to Sergio Pininfarina [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By John Lamm

Pininfarina Sergio concept

For more than half a century, Sergio Pininfarina was the face, body, and soul of the design firm that carries his family’s name. We’d see him at auto shows and venues like the Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance, always the epitome of the Italian gentleman. And never mind that he was a member of the European Parliament and an Italian Senator for life—simply consider how many Ferraris you’ve drooled over that were penned by his company.  READ MORE ››

Bentley Design Chief Donckerwolke Bins EXP 9 F Concept, Working on New SUV and Continental

By Jens Meiners

Bentley EXP 9 F SUV concept

A few months into his tenure as Bentley chief designer, Volkswagen Group’s star designer Luc Donckerwolke is shaking up operations to prepare the brand for the future. Shortly after the departure of exterior design chief David Hilton, Donckerwolke has hired former GM and VW Group designer Sang Yup Lee to take charge. Meanwhile, former interior chief Robin Page has left Bentley to work with former VW Group designer Thomas Ingenlath at Volvo. Page’s replacement will be announced shortly.

Donckerwolke and his team have their work cut out for them. While the brand is pushing an SUV into production, the EXP 9 F concept—unveiled to incredulous eyes at the Geneva auto show last year—has been canned. After Geneva, it was shown not only at the Beijing show, but surprisingly also at last year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance. Now the brand is working on a sportier and more contemporary interpretation of an SUV.

Work also is progressing on the next-generation Continental GT, which will break away from the current look. Because of budget constraints during its development process, the second-generation Continental GT is little more than an extensive face lift. At least its Flying Spur derivative, finalized before Donckerwolke came on board, will be more differentiated from the first-generation model than the two-door Continentals were.

Donckerwolke is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Vevey, Switzerland. He joined Audi in 1992 and held different positions at Audi and Škoda, then moved to Lamborghini in 1998 and became the brand’s chief designer in 2003. Two years after that promotion, Donckerwolke took over as chief designer of Seat; he became head of the Volkswagen Group’s advanced design in 2011.

He was heavily involved in the Audi A2, first-generation Škoda Fabia and Octavia, and the Lamborghini Gallardo and Murciélago. Donckerwolke is a genuine car guy; his personal collection includes a Lamborghini Espada, a Lamborghini Miura, a VW-Porsche 914/6 race car, a BMW 3.0 CSI, and a Fiat 850 Coupé Sport. His level of enthusiasm for grand-turismo cars is hard to surpass.
