2013 Cadillac XTS FWD Tested: One for the DTS Die-Hards

By Alexander Stoklosa

2013 Ford Focus ST

Dead man walking, make way! Dead man walking! Actually, in the case of the 2013 Cadillac XTS sedan, it’s more like dead car, er, rolling. That’s because the XTS—which shares its bones with lesser GM sedans like the Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Impala—is expected to live for just a single generation. A proper Cadillac flagship riding on a new, premium rear-wheel-drive platform should eventually replace it. Why go through the effort of developing a car with a near-term death sentence? Seniors. The XTS positively drips with the geriatric-express stigma inherent in a V-6–powered, front-drive-based luxo-barge, and that’s no bad thing for Cadillac’s bottom line. This car is intended to hold over DTS owners to finance Caddy’s eventual move to a BMW-like rear-drive-based car lineup.  READ MORE ››

DTS and Fairlight Collaborate to Deliver the Industry’s First Next-Generation 3D Audio Creation Platform to Support MDA

MDA, an Open Object-based Audio Specification, Answers the Industry’s Demand for a Non-Proprietary Solution for Next-Gen Content Creation

CALABASAS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– DTS, Inc. (NAS: DTSI) , a pioneer in next generation ultra high-definition audio solutions and audio enhancement technologies, and Fairlight, a leader in audio and video post production solutions, today collaboratively announced the release of Fairlight’s new 3DAW, a 3D audio production platform with native MDA mixing and format support. Answering the industry’s demand for an open next-generation audio format, DTS worked with experts in the content creation community to create the MDA specification.

In January of this year, DTS publicly announced its intent to provide MDA to the industry as an open object-based audio authoring format, as the industry looks to avoid a format war for next-gen content creation and cinema delivery. Today, the standardization work continues to formalize the specification, while industry leaders such as Fairlight jump ahead of the curve by working with DTS to integrate MDA into their new 3DAW solution. The first of its kind, Fairlight’s 3DAW enables sound designers to truly mix object-based audio in unrestricted 3D space, monitor on any configuration, and output in DTS‘ proposed future specification—MDA. Additionally, Fairlight’s 3DAW will feature the ability to mix soundtracks for DTS Neo:X™, a channel-based audio solution designed to support up to an 11.1 speaker system.

“We are delighted to be working with DTS to equip our all new 3DAW production station with MDA authoring capability,” said Tino Fibaek, CTO at Fairlight. “Together, we can now offer studios a highly anticipated alternative to the closed proprietary object-based audio formats being proposed to date.”

The MDA specification is currently being proposed to international standardization committees as an alternative to today’s closed proprietary solutions. MDA allows every sound element of a soundtrack to be mapped in 3D space, storing all of the spatial and behavioral information of each sound element as metadata. Mixing audio with MDA as opposed to other surround sound platforms allows a soundtrack to maintain the exact spatial characteristics of the audio as intended by the mixer. With overwhelming interest from the entertainment industry, MDA has already garnered support from major studios and networks, while content tool providers have begun developing new authoring solutions for the MDA format.

DTS Launches DTSHD ® Layered Audio Technology to Enable Online Services to Efficiently Stream Audio at Various Bit-Rates from a Single Encode

Targeting Next Generation Streaming Formats Like MPEG-DASH, DTS-HD ® Layered Audio Provides Online Media Services An Elegant One-Stream Solution For Adaptive Bit-Rate Audio At A Fraction Of The Storage Cost

CALABASAS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– DTS, Inc. (NAS: DTSI) , a leader in high-definition audio solutions and audio enhancement technologies today announced the launch of its new DTSHD® Layered Audio technology, designed to enable online media services to offer adaptive bit-rate audio streaming from a single encode. DTSHD Layered Audio utilizes advanced features of the DTSHD codec to create and efficiently store adaptive bit-rate audio streams from a single encode, allowing online media services to better accommodate the challenging network conditions of over-the-top (OTT) broadband video streaming and deliver a better consumer experience. DTS will be demonstrating this technology in conjunction with partners Manzanita Systems, Unified Streaming and castLabs, streaming in MPEG-DASH at the DTS booth at NAB 2013 (SU8514).

Manzanita Systems (NAB booth SU6908) was the first to integrate DTSHD Layered Audio into their Manzanita MP4 Multiplexer (MP4Mux v2.0) to be released in May. “Manzanita Systems is excited to incorporate DTS‘ latest technology for enabling high efficiency adaptive bit-rate audio for our customers,” said CEO, Greg Vines. “DTSHD Layered Audio allows services to stream using adaptive bit-rate audio at almost no additional storage cost over a single encode—a great benefit for today’s challenging network environments.”

Unified Streaming has implemented support for DTSHD Layered Audio in their Unified Streaming Platform (USP), which provides real-time transmuxing (changing the container format) to enable a single source to feed output to a wide range of different streaming formats. The USP was released at the end of Q1 2013. “DTSHD Layered Audio is a unique and innovative approach to enabling adaptive bit-rate audio streaming from a single encode with minimal overhead,” said Arjen Wagenaar, CTO of Unified Streaming. “Such a simple, elegant solution was an obvious fit for our products, whose primary purpose is to easily deliver adaptive streaming to any screen, any device from a single source.”

“We designed our Layered Audio technology with bandwidth limitations, server resource efficiency and consumer enjoyment in mind,” said Mark Johnson, vice president of streaming and media solutions, DTS Inc. “Our goal at DTS is to deliver the best quality, immersive audio experience possible. Did DTS Squander Its Latest Sales Increase?

By Seth Jayson, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Margins matter. The more DTS (NAS: DTSI) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That’s why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I’m looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong DTS‘s competitive position could be.

Here’s the current margin snapshot for DTS over the trailing 12 months: Gross margin is 95.7%, while operating margin is 7.8% and net margin is -15.4%.

Unfortunately, a look at the most recent numbers doesn’t tell us much about where DTS has been, or where it’s going. A company with rising gross and operating margins often fuels its growth by increasing demand for its products. If it sells more units while keeping costs in check, its profitability increases. Conversely, a company with gross margins that inch downward over time is often losing out to competition, and possibly engaging in a race to the bottom on prices. If it can’t make up for this problem by cutting costs — and most companies can’t — then both the business and its shares face a decidedly bleak outlook.

Of course, over the short term, the kind of economic shocks we recently experienced can drastically affect a company’s profitability. That’s why I like to look at five fiscal years’ worth of margins, along with the results for the trailing 12 months, the last fiscal year, and last fiscal quarter (LFQ). You can’t always reach a hard conclusion about your company’s health, but you can better understand what to expect, and what to watch.

Here’s the margin picture for DTS over the past few years.

Because of seasonality in some businesses, the numbers for the last period on the right — the TTM figures — aren’t always comparable to the FY results preceding them. To compare quarterly margins to their prior-year levels, consult this chart.

Here’s how the stats break down:

  • Over the past five years, gross margin peaked at 99.1% and averaged 97.7%. Operating margin peaked at 30.6% and averaged 23.0%. Net margin peaked at 18.9% and averaged 10.9%.
  • TTM gross margin is 95.7%, 200 basis points worse than the five-year average. TTM operating margin is 7.8%, 1,520 basis points worse than the five-year average. …read more

Review: 2013 Cadillac XTS [w/video]

The Cadillac Of Stopgaps

2013 Cadillac XTS

As confusing as most alphanumeric car names have gotten in recent years, at least one constant has been that the letter “X” is generally indicative of a crossover. Then why did General Motors use this letter on its new 2013 Cadillac XTS luxury sedan? Well, for that, we’ll have to look to the world of mathematics where “X” stands for an unknown variable or a placeholder. Now we’re talking. The XTS is just an interim product sitting at the top of Cadillac’s four-door food chain until the brand gets a true flagship in place. That sounds like a lot of resources to spend on what will likely be a one-and-done model, but the automaker needed to get something – anything – to replace the DTS.

So here you have the 2013 XTS. A big luxury sedan that was created to bridge the gap between Cadillac’s recent past and its pending future. Going into our week with this XTS knowing that it was a stopgap measure proved to be both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, we know (or hope) that this car will act as a baseline for future high-end Cadillac models, but at the same time, we couldn’t help but be mindful of past stopgap models, albeit in more entry-level segments, like the Cimarron and Catera.

2013 Cadillac XTS AWD Tested: Stylish, and Roomy, but Infotainment-Challenged

By Austin Lindberg

2013 Cadillac XTS AWD Platinum

Forget both the snoozer STS and the phlegmatic DTS, as the XTS sits atop the Cadillac lineup as the brand’s new flagship. (Well, at least until the Mercedes S-class-targeting, über-luxury rear-drive sedan based on the upcoming Omega platform arrives a few years down the road.) Sporting the latest interpretation of Cadillac’s Art and Science design theme, the XTS looks like a CTS in a Big & Tall suit. READ MORE ››
